    Update

I've joined the release preview channel today. Got Windows 11 update.

I've to say at first, I have a pretty stable Windows 10 setup now. Everything working fine, good fps at games, no app crashes, smooth windows for say. Is it worth upgrading to Windows 11? I'm not a visual experience person, I need stable and performance usage. So have you guys upgraded? What are your thoughts?

Windows Updates at the worst moment

Am I the only one who thinks Microsoft should've been sued long time ago over Windows Updates? Can't imagine someone at a very important meeting waiting for the update to finish.

Protecting senior from scammers and remove access 2021

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 08:21 AM PDT

I am securing my my mother-in-law's Windows 8.1 computer after a scammer had her give him remote access. Not sure what app he used. Here is what I have done. Let me know if there are other measures I should take:

    1. Installed TrendMicro rescue disk on USB drive and ran from boot up (before Windows loads). Scan took a few hours. No risks found.
    2. I added myself a new user and made myself Admin in Windows
    3. I downgraded her account to regular user. So she can't install Windows apps.
    4. I installed AVG paid version, ran a full scan inside Windows. Nothing found.
    5. In AVG firewall remote access tab, I blocked all IP numbers. So, in theory this is supposed to block all remote desktop style connections.
    6. I also removed her access to AVG, so she/scammer can't change the settings.

    Problems/risks

I discovered that AnyDesk and other remove software allow one to run them without being installed. So, I need to see if there is a way in AVG to prevent any EXE files from being downloaded and/or from running. That is, existing EXE files can run. But nothing that has a date from today onward.

In the Run box, I found the following, obviously entered by the scammer:

[ I had to remove the list because this post was blocked by the admin ]

In the downloads screen, I found:

    • support.Client.exe

I haven't been able to find much about this EXE file. I looked through the installed apps and I don't see anything unusual. Worried that this EXE files is hidden deep and wouldn't show up. Is there somewhere online I can send the file for analysis? ASAIK the scammer doesn't have still have remote access but he is still calling on the home phone asking about his wire transfer.

Why does Device Manager/Windows Update never have the latest drivers from the Microsoft Update Catalog?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 08:00 AM PDT

One time, I was looking for updated drivers for my laptop's network card and of course, device manager "check for updates" and Windows Update returned nothing. Then I realized the Microsoft Update Catalog was a thing, and upon searching my network card model, I found downloadable drivers for it. And they installed properly and are much more up to date than the ones I had before.

So the question is, why doesn't Device Manager or Windows Update pull the latest drivers from the Microsoft Update Catalog? I mean, each driver entry on the website is tied to a specific hardware ID anyway, so it should be able to cross-identify it properly.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:08 AM PDT

I know it's coming out officially in just a few days, but I'm wondering if I update to the insider build right now, will it be easy to go the normal version when that comes on the 5th?

I was going through my files and found a few screen shots of my desktop and a few applications that didn't take all named capture0. I did some research but came up with nothing. Should i be worried or it is nothing to worry about? I am on windows 11 if that makes any difference.
