What are some cool things you can actually do with your network? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:39 PM PDT This is the first time I've had control over my network and have a budget to get new hardware, but I'm not sure what all is possible, let alone what the best hardware/software is for that purpose. Currently I have a laptop I use for mobile purposes and another laptop that is (due to damage) fixed on place, which I'd like to replace with proper desktop. Both run Debian Linux and I have a WiFi router running Open-Wrt. It's a rental, so home features like linking a smart thermostat don't really apply. Some things I'm interested in but don't know much about:
For context, I have never really set up remote access or network file sharing or anything like that before. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:02 AM PDT Starting a home networking project. We're is a good place to purchase Cat 6 from? I've considered the south wire from home depot / lowes, true cable, monoprice and infinite cables? Does Reddit have a preference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:26 PM PDT My friend just gave me a free spool of cat 6 shielded and I was wondering if I can use it for a bunch of camera runs ungrounded? Thanks for your time! [link] [comments] |
Budget router for IoT VLAN network Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:04 PM PDT Currently I have a router TP-LINK Archer C6 AC1200 which can't create VLAN - only guest network. I plan to use these devices with Raspberry and Home Assistant: - old smart TV, - cheap bulbs, - google home mini, - sonoff motion sensors, - someday sliding blinds. But lets focus on router. I would like to be secured in case of being hacked, spied on etc so I'm considering two scenarios:
The most important for me is security of devices in the main network. What would you do? Maybe something different? [link] [comments] |
ASUS guest network not keeping guests connected over a day?? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:09 PM PDT Hi everyone, I have an ASUS router and turned on a guest network, have set it to unlimited bandwidth, hidden the SSID, and no access to intranet, and unlimited access time (infinity symbol for minutes, hour, and days) But after 24 hours my guests (who are here for like 2 weeks) have to keep logging back on to it. Both use iphones. I share it by showiNG a QR code and they scan on their phone then click to connect. Anyone know what is happening with that? Weird that the next day they aren't on WiFi or even same day sometimes when they leave and comeback. Regardless of hidden SSID, shouldn't they be able to connect if they leave and comeback? Thanks for your help ahead of time. [link] [comments] |
Openers - how to create VLANs? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:35 PM PDT I have a nanopi R4S running openWRT. I want to create a vlan on it. It attaches to a managed switch. I want to isolate my work from home computer. How do I do this? Edit: openwrt, not openers [link] [comments] |
Im doing it, returning Verizon router and building up my own network Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:38 AM PDT Finally built up the courage to return the FiOS G3100 and build up my own network. Part of this is we are going to cord cut and just get Youtube TV, so there is no need for any MoCA shenanigans. I am going to go with the 4 port ProtectLi router seen here. Is this overkill? I need recommendations for wireless APs. My house is close to 6k sq feet. Im willing to get the good stuff. I don't think I need commercial grade but I want a strong signal if possible. I can post some hand drawn pictures of my house layout including where the ethernet ports are if that helps. The only complicated thing Im trying to do is put my security system on a VLAN. So I need a managed switch right? A 5 port should do right, since I can cain unmanaged switches right? Or do I not need a managed switch with that 4 port ProtectLi router since Id have one port for the security VLAN and three more for whatever (possibly other VLANs in the future)? [link] [comments] |
How do I set up a mesh network using 3 routers that are all wired via ethernet? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:50 PM PDT I've been trying to figure this out for a while now but I'm not sure if this is possible… I currently have 3 routers that are all connected via Cat 6 ethernet cables, and I'd like them all to behave as a mesh network (in addition to feeding some wired devices). Here's the hardware I'm using:
I started out setting them all to the same SSID but there would be times when I'd walk across the apartment and have a really weak signal, as if it wasn't switching over to the closest router. As a temporary solution we set one of the routers to a different SSID to ensure a solid signal at the back of the apartment, but my dream is a working "mesh" network that doesn't require me buying $400+ of new hardware. Any advice or tips are appreciated—thank you! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a router, need help Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:36 PM PDT Hello! I have been tasked with upgrading a home network and am currently looking to finalize my equipment plan, but when it comes to the router I find myself unable to make a choice. So, I'm posting here for some input. Some info on the network: -Network will be getting 200Mbps up and down via fiber -Current setup has a CAT5E Ethernet cable run from the ONT to the center of the front wall, where the only formal Ethernet access point is. Currently, a Verizon MI242WR is located in this location -total square footage of the building is 2200 square feet cross three floors with an asymmetric layout when viewed from the front. -Due to the poor positioning, there are two dead zones, one of which is a floor above the access point and 21-27 feet away from it when viewed from the top-down. This particular dead zone must be covered (range extenders can cover the other dead zone). -The homeowners want a reliable network that can handle their (low) traffic well and won't need updated for about a decade. To fit these criteria, I began looking at WiFi 5 or 6 meshes with at least a gigabit of bandwidth, firewall, and WPA3 and WPA2 support (older devices). Unfortunately, nothing short of $500 seems to fulfill this list, and that's without buying a MOCA adapter. I have considered just buying the biggest router I can, but I'm not sure if that would be effective with the positioning. The Netgear Nighthawk RBK63 comes close, but lacks WPA2. Any ideas? EAP245 Setup - keeps losing WAN connectivity Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:28 PM PDT So I have 2 TP-Link EAP245 access points connected to an ASUS router via switch. I've had them for about 2 years and they have been working great, however the last few weeks my wifi has been terribly spotty. The wired network is fine but the connection keeps randomly dropping on the wifi. I have noticed when this happens that going to the router address (192.168.0.1) brings up the TP Link login page instead of the usual router page leading me to believe somehow the connection is getting lost between the AP and router. I've tried turning each one off and it still seems to be happening on both of them its not a hardware issue / bad cable. I've also tried factory resetting both of them. Looking for other ideas on what else to try. Appreciate any advise. [link] [comments] |
Best Fiber cabling options for Home Lab(SFP?) ISP is 1.2GB down Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:33 PM PDT Hey guys, So I'm currently trying to install a pfsense firewall at my home for lab stuff. I have a switch with SFP ports. I was thinking of placing a 2 port SFP inside the firewall so my uplink/internet connection can be fiber but my run from the firewall to the switch would need to be a CAT cable to the SFP port via an RJ45 to SFP adaptor. Would that limit my speed to 1gb or fully pass through my 1.2gb down i get from my ISP? Is there a better way to do this? How would an access point get the full 1.2gb to it as well? Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:26 PM PDT I've got 2 loco5acs that I'm planning to mount on my TV aerial antenna. Would there be any issues with interference if doing this? Seems to be the best location for line of sight without needing a brand new mounting pole. [link] [comments] |
Device prioritizing with low speeds? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:21 PM PDT I currently have a 5mb/s Download and 800kb/s Upload speed in rural Ontario and was wondering if there was a way or perhaps a router that can prioritize the data needed to maintain the low ping my DSL provides without interruption from spikes and streaming in the rest of the house. For example could I set aside 150kb/s to myself that allows gaming to be possible while the rest of the family watches Netflix? I am not offered any other options from isp's.. This 5mb/s down option from Bell is the only one available in my location and I've been waiting on Starlink since February. Any ideas would be appreciated. (other than 'get a different service' because that's already in the works.. just need a solution for the meantime) Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Coaxial cable or ethernet for devices 30m away? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:55 PM PDT Hello! I've just gotten a 1Gbps connection and uses a coaxial data cable. I want to fully utilize the speed by plugging it to my devices which are in a room around 30m away from where the coaxial data port is. I was thinking of the following two options:
I think option #1 would be better, however I have no idea about which cable to chooss (in regards to dB, impedence, etc... I just want to have maximum speed. Can someone help me out? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:24 AM PDT I've spent the last couple hours looking for a mid-tier mesh system for my home. My 10+ year old netgear router seem to have died (no longer powers on). This means no WiFi at home. In our current house, coverage has always been bad, because the router is in one corner or our home, which is basically a square footprint with rooms divided by interior walls, about 2000sqft of needed coverage. I have a CAT cable run to the living room (which is sort of in the middle of the house), so I can do an access point or hardwired mesh node. Long story short, I starting looking at the Deco X60 kit, the Nest kit, and Eero kit, and basically all of them have recent reviews about how connections frequently drop for iOS devices. There's lots of reference to turning off 5ghz and turning off a Private Address setting on the iOS devices. Bottom line is that this seems like a pain in the ass, regardless of whether it is Apple's fault or an issue with new WiFi 6 hardware. I'm paying for half-gig service from my ISP, so would avoiding WiFi 6 and sticking with previous generation mesh kits be a decent option? My other option is to get into Ubiquiti. My brother has an ACPRO access point he can give me. So maybe I should get a UniFi Dream Machine and put the access point in the living room? [link] [comments] |
How to traceroute with ipv6 in windows 10? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:16 PM PDT Hello there. I have been messing a little with my router, a tp link archer c6, trying to make his ipv6 wan side to work. After trying some options, apparently i did something right, and now it shows me in the configuration webpage that internet is coming from both ipv4 and 6 and it is ok and running. Then i went to test it by trying a tracert command to google but it shows me the mesage "unable to resolve the domain name destiny"... i have tryied inputting both "tracert -6 google.com" and "tracert -6 8.8.8.8" but neither worked. So, i have come here for aid on how to test if my ipv6 connection is working. I'm just an enthusiast in networking, still finishing a few courses about it in udemy, learning by myself and quite much enjoying it. My setut is a tp link archer c6 router cascaded (lan to wan) from my isp ftth modem/router fiberhome hg6245d, which receives internet by pppoe vlan (still trying to figure out how to bridge this modem to my router, to fix my double natting, but since it isn't bothering me and is good and running, i stopped caring, at least for now). Issue with Arris Surfboard SB8200: Not maintaining blue downstream light Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:04 PM PDT Recently, my Arris SB8200 no longer keeps a stable blue downstream light, which is affecting wifi connectivity with the attached Linksys wireless router. When connected to either of my router's wifi bands, the connection is either extremely slow, or never connects. Sometimes a single page will load, but nothing else afterwards. From what I surmised, this means that the modem is having trouble with the DOCSYS 3.1 link. This started after our ISP--Comcast/Xfinity--had issues in the area, and even though they say that it's been fixed according to my mother (who manages the account) as she tells me that she been working fine on the Comcast-provided modem/router's network, the SB8200 is still having problems. See, we have two modems: the Comcast-provided modem/wireless router, and the aforementioned SB8200 which I bought because I was dissatisfied with the performance of the Comcast modem. Both modems are connected to the Comcast connection via a coaxial splitter, as my mom insists on keeping the Comcast modem because she's also paying to keep around a landline phone. But like I said, up until a few weeks ago, everything was working fine. I tried rebooting the modem (and the router as well), but no use. I reconnected an older SB8200 that I still have, and it presents the same issue, which leads me to believe that it's the connection somewhere. Am I correct in assuming that this is an issue that Comcast has to look at and resolve at this point, or is there something that I'm overlooking on my end? [link] [comments] |
Engenius as Unifi alternative??? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:03 PM PDT Reading through the review of Engenius ECW 220 at https://www.androidcentral.com/engenius-ecw220-wi-fi-6-review I wonder way was it presented as a viable alternative to Unifi U6-LR or eg Omada EAP 620. It has less features (no offsite management, 160MHz wide channels and no PoE injector included) for about 50% higher price ($300 vs $179 for U6-LR). I can understand Aruba being a viable alternative (it's also mentioned in the review), but Aruba is well known and respected for its product. What gives? [link] [comments] |
I know repeaters suck but is it sufficient for my needs? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:37 PM PDT Not trying to argue how trash they are, I know all the cons and have looked into other solutions but here's the situation: my room is the only dead zone in the house--internet connection just drops off as soon as I go through the door. I only have a handful of devices connected and with a pretty good internet speed, I'd be okay with it being a bit slower if it means I'll at least get internet in the room, because right now more often than not am I not getting any signal at all. After looking at my options, the cost-time-benefit of a repeater really seems to be best (mesh is too expensive for this minor problem). I'm curious if anyone had a similar experience, and whether a repeater was sufficient? I know they get a lot of deserved hate, but I'm sure they have their place..? [link] [comments] |
TP-Link AC1900 (RE590T) not sending signal through 5ghz or Ethernet Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:34 PM PDT I bought this to replace the AC1200 I had. I rent a basement apartment and the house has Comcast. They upgraded to gigabit since I moved in and brought up connectivity issues often. The basement gets terrible signal for my usage which is online Teams meetings, downloads, gaming, and streaming Netflix etc. My PC is the corner of the living room where signal was especially awful so I had an Ethernet running from the 1200. But recently I was getting dropped ok the time. Last teams meeting I lost connection 4 times in an hour. So I got the AC1900 to up the load capability. Installation and setup of the AC1900 was flawless. And initially I got 350Mbps through the previously mentioned Ethernet. We'll hit the machine this morning and signal was gone. I tested the cables best I could, also tried plugging in my laptop. Nada. Ethernet and 5ghz show it's connected to internet, but websites, games, etc don't load. Any ideas what I'm overlooking? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Help with connecting multiple Velop systems through ethernet. Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:20 PM PDT Good morning, I have a Velop Tri-band mesh system in my home. The house is approximately 2,000 square feet with some fairly thick walls. So the mesh design doesn't work all that well. I would like to use the ethernet that is running throughout the house to connect these systems. Does anyone have any experience with this? Currently the parent node is in bridge mode and is connected to another router provided by the service provider (KT). So at this point the wifi works well downstairs, but once we move upstairs where I have two child nodes the Wifi is non-existent. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
