What is your top most used command? Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:17 AM PDT Everyday we run so many commands in our Linux system. Which command you use the most? Let me start first. My top most used command is sudo. [link] [comments] |
Web browsing on Ubuntu feels laggier than Windows Posted: 03 Sep 2021 10:30 AM PDT I've dual booted Ubuntu 20.04 recently for a programming environment, and I've noticed that web browsing feels noticeably laggier than on Windows 10. I'm using it on an Intel i5-1135g7 with Intel Iris Xe graphics, and I've allocated 100gb on my partition. [link] [comments] |
What’s the standard way to open source Linux device driver? Posted: 03 Sep 2021 01:53 AM PDT I'm learning about developing Linux device driver so I'm hoping to write new device drivers and open source them. How do Linux devs usually go about open source device drivers? Or publishing through personal GitHub repo? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:22 AM PDT I am noticed any program I install by command don't appear on Ubuntu software center for removing, this means I need to uninstall with the command line. Was wondering if there some software I could use to remove them for me with a interface instead of using terminal. It's just having dyslexia can be real pain. Anyone please ? X [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:30 AM PDT If I had to guess, each package format (deb, PKGBUILD, etc) is just an archive that contains the binary and other files, including some metadata, that gets extracted to certain folders on your system. If the above is accurate, aren't different package format just making it more difficult to use software by artificially locking it down to certain distros and package managers? [link] [comments] |
After the network card problem, now screen problems have appeared. Posted: 03 Sep 2021 10:34 AM PDT Recently I had posted about some problems on the network card after the first formatting. I was able to fix the problem and shut down the computer to do other tasks. My younger brother asked me to turn on the computer and connect Disney+ for him to watch his favorite sitcom. I did his request, but the computer booted on a black screen. I decided to connect the laptop to a TV via an HDMI cable and the computer went into dual monitor mode: what appeared on the TV was the extension of what would be on the monitor, but the monitor remained black. Since the login screen appeared I was able to use Openbox (I was using Debian with LXDE). I thought it was a driver problem (and indeed it was, the startup stated that one of the drivers didn't load correctly) and downloaded the latest Linux Mint XFCE ISO. When it came time to boot, I had the same problem. The Live CD managed to boot, but I was left with a black screen on one monitor and the extent of what would be on the main screen. Now, I don't know what to do anymore: is it a hardware or software problem? I've had previous problems with hardware compatibility in LMDE and Debian, I don't know what else to do. For those who want to know the model of my computer, it is a Samsung NP-NC215 notebook. It has an Intel Atom 1.66 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 500 GB of ROM memory. Thank you for your attention and help. [link] [comments] |
Is there any better FOSS Email Client out there other than Thunderbird? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:53 PM PDT I don't know if I'm simply not using it correctly, but running Thunderbird on Ubuntu has just been painful. I've been using this set up for my "workbook" for the last several months and it just isn't getting any better. [link] [comments] |
Autofs: Question about Timeout and Ghost Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:10 AM PDT Hi, I have a few questions w/ Autofs that I could really use your help with. Timeout: Why do we timeout and unmount the drive? Does this save on resources or somehow add to stability? I would like the more stable option. And the drive is on a Virtual Machine mounting to the host. Ghost, does this just make a directory on the host if one isn't there? The description actually makes it sound more like it is just throwing files away and pretending them to transfer them somewhere. Not sure what it does at all. Thank you again for taking time to help me with this! Any assistance is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Not sure if my GPU drivers are installed properly Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:34 AM PDT I installed the Radeon Software driver for Ubuntu 20.04.3, however when using neofetch it says my GPU is " AMDATI Device 73ff'. Shouldn't it display as '6600XT? [link] [comments] |
live-usb boot and delete / zero write storage devices Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:33 AM PDT Hello linux friends, I have an issue at hand with an old MS surface tablet device and would like to gather some low hanging idea-fruits from the community :) The display is totally destroyed. Barely next to impossible to read or decipher what is displayed on screen. But the bigger problem is that the digitizer for touch / pen input is acting crazy. Like 100 random inputs per second across the screen. I would like to decommission the device and delete all data before I give it to a recycling shop. As of now the installed OS is MS Windows 10. The reason I am posting my request in this sub is because I know of and used some live-boot-distros / boot-images for exactly this case for other devices. But they all require user input (understandably so) :( Is there a ready to use boot image that would help me out here? Thanks for reading and all your ideas in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:25 PM PDT I have a dual ubuntu/arch system and my ubuntu partition is largely empty and before my arch / partition which is entirely full. My question is can I reduce my ubuntu partition substantially and extend my arch / partition forward into the cleared space using gparted? Will I also have to run something like grup repair? I would also like to extend my home partition forward as I will likely have more space than needed for my / partition. Any advice or help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Secure Boot + TPM2.0 and linux distros Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:16 PM PDT Hi all, Is there an easy way or quick guide anyone knows about on how to install a big distro like KUbuntu or OpenSuse with these bios features enabled? I'm looking to duel boot. I've been reading the arch wiki but it's a bit daunting to figure out. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Bash script with sudo command but have password window prompt over terminal Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:13 PM PDT How do you run a sudo command in a bash script but have the password window prompt be used to enter the sudo password over the terminal? The same window you will use on Cinnamon Nemo or Xfce Thunar to Open As Root. It does not open up the terminal and ask for the password, it opens up a password window asking for the password. Is it possible to enter graphical mode without any login? Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:02 AM PDT Without the use of any of DM or startx, how can I start graphical mode automatically as a process. I am not worried about privacy as I keep my laptop at home and I live alone. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |

Choose wireless interface for SSH Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:33 AM PDT I have a usb wifi adapter plugged into my raspberry pi 3a+ (which also has a built-in wifi interface), and I'm connecting to the pi using SSH with my laptop (tried with both windows via putty and xubuntu on a VM using putty). I have no other means of accessing the pi. The pi is running on raspberry pi OS. Whenever I try to put down the usb WiFi adapter or put it into monitor mode, I lose the SSH connection. This is the same even if I first connect to the pi, then plug in the interface after connection is established. I can only assume that the pi is switching to the usb WiFi adapter for the SSH connection automatically. I want to be able to choose the built in interface to use for SSH so that I don't lose connection when changing settings of the adapter. Question - How might I do this? Or is there a different problem I have overlooked? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Are there alternative drivers for my webcam? Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:40 AM PDT I recently bought a J.Burrows CM200. Install was fine, plug & play on my MXLinux (Debian 10) OS. However, occasionally the auto focus gets a bit lost the image will repeatedly go in and out of focus. I'm wondering if there are other drivers out there that I could try. Searching online hasn't come up with anything so far. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu installer cannot find hard disk Posted: 03 Sep 2021 10:45 AM PDT I bought an Acer laptop and immediately tried to install Linux but it does not recognize my hard disk. In BIOS, two hard disks are listed: HDD0 and HDD1. Interestingly enough, the HDD0 entry is empty and HDD1 entry holds the value of the hard disk. I think this is why Ubuntu installer cannot find the hard disk. I have tried several solutions from the internet, (e.g., turn off secure boot, switch from RAID to ACHI, turn off fast boot, etc.), but nothing worked. There are other solutions I haven't tried because they could wipe the hard disks and I have exams going on so can't loose the Windows however dirty using it makes me feel. I'm posting here in case someone faced the same problem. Thanks in advance.
P.S. Should I post this somewhere else (other than stackexchange)? [link] [comments] |
Want to switch to linux but there are some cons Posted: 03 Sep 2021 01:55 AM PDT Hello everyone. Big lurker of the sub, really appreciated it. I apologize for my English in advance. I tried Linux a few times for a week or two then every time I ended up getting frustrated and ditching it coming back to windows. I tried ubuntu and some derivates, mint and pop os, really liked pop os, apart from its dual boot without grub. I'm a university student, my needs are simple, reading pdf, web browsing, some basic office stuff, video lessons, and some entertainment. Rarely I had to use specific software but this was not the main problem. Now the issues I found using Linux.
In order to overcome the cloud issues I considered to:
These are my consideration and my experiences with Linux. On the other hand, I enjoyed a lot linux environment. But I don't know if it is the right choice for me, because even if I set up a dual it's useless if most of the time I continue to use windows. What I don't like on windows is

Ubuntu installed on 2009 Mac Mini. Network problems . . . Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:20 AM PDT I installed Ubuntu on this because it reached the end of OS updates and an issue with my account on apple (THAT is another story). I primarily use this as a media server and run my streaming services through Chrome. Once installed, Ubuntu seemed to work fantastic and my streams seemed clear. Now it lags and skips and looks horrible on screen, plus I get popups about video quality. I can get signal to/from the ethernet port and wireless but the signal is low and noisy according to speedofme. The waveforms are jagged and all over the place compared to my other machines (Macbook and Windows 10 desktop). Could this be some kind of driver or configuration problem? I can't imagine it's hardware because two different hardware systems are affected equally. [link] [comments] |
Is parrot OS (security) usable as daily driver? Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:13 AM PDT Well basically title, I know home version exists but I'd rather have privacy and security tools preinstalled, I use archlinux rn and I am doing CTFs and stuff and learning cybersecurity stuff. I tried it in live usb and unlike kali, it seems secure to use as daily driver. [link] [comments] |
