Is a thermal pad necessary for a laptop SSD upgrade?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST

So I just got a HP Envy 15 (2020 model) with 512GB of storage. The laptop comes with a second slot for an M.2 SSD which I want to add a second drive to. My question is, is it worth it for me to get a thermal pad for that second drive when I upgrade it? I've researched the topic and found quite a bit of conflicting information.

Laptop model: HP Envy 15 15-ep0025cl

    SSD: Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB NVMe PCIe M.2 2280

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    ASUS A15 RTX3060

As you can see this is the full spec from the manufacturers portal. It doesnt specify anything besides the "model" of the gpu. Also, comes bundled with rather questionable display.

Advice: Samsung Galaxy Chromebook or 2020 HP Spectre x360 14

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:26 AM PST

    VS

    https://www8.hp.com/us/en/laptops/2-in-1s/spectre-x360-14-convertible-laptop.html#tab=performance

I own the Samsung and I enjoy it a lot. It's almost perfect if only the screen was a bit larger or not 16:9. I'm debating on returning it for the 2020 HP Spectre 14.

My primary use will be image editing and multimedia use. Maybe some light video editing. GIFs and video clips. I love how light Chrome OS is but I'm afraid in the long run I'll need more that Windows can provide.

The number 1 thing I want is a perfect screen with touch capabilities. Which one has the best screen for the money to view and edit pictures I will be doing a lot of saving and browsing images online as well. A digital library.

Any advice or opinions will be appreciated. Thank you.

PSA: check your gamma correction settings and see if it's being done correctly

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:20 AM PST

In my experience a lot of laptops come with bad gamma correction which affects you reading text or watching videos. Why this is important more than color calibration itself? The only time when you will need accurate colors is when you do video and image production, other than that your eye gets used to the incorrect colors and since you are not making anything that will be displayed for other people who might criticize you on that then you are good. In the other hand, gamma correction is important because it's actually corrects your perception of light, with low gamma the dark spots in a film will look crushed (completely black), you will try to compensate for that by increasing the luminosity of the screen and this will result into a screen that bright and that also will make it hard to see details.

I struggled with this for a long time, I couldn't watch anything because my eye would really not be able to see anything with clarity, if I increase the brightness, all I end up seeing is light over dark areas and no details coming from the pixels themselves.

I hope this helps someone who's confused why films look darker and lacking details.

I feel bad replacing my 2015 MBP for a Windows laptop 3 years later

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:04 PM PST

    Hi folks

I never intended to write about this but it sits in my stomach and I feel like sharing.

I bought a brand new MBP in 2015, used it for 3 years and I sold it because I wanted a new thing, a new laptop, new ecosystem.

So I bought HP Envy 13, Windows, 1,2K$.

2 years later Apple comes out with M1 beasts that are performing like F1 cars and give users a feeling of having something amazing whilst I have to deal with bloatware called Windows. This operating system is trash, networking is garbage, battery management is non existant, app support is sub zero and perspective on giving it a similar feeling to MacOS are zero to none.

We used to complain about MacOS being a closed out system, outer world not getting into it. But now their UI is 15 years ahead of a dump I have to look at 8 hours a day.

It was a bad decision and I regret it. HP made a plastic laptop that is more expensive than a Macbook Air, serves the same kind of people and is trash after 2 years.

I like windows for gaming only.

I would love to sell but I have other important financial decisions to make so I am stuck with it until lockdowns are lifted.

    My laptop is underperforming

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:44 AM PST

I bought my laptop Acer Nitro AN515 i5 9300h GTX 1650 8gb RAM last June It performed well for quite a time but the fps on games on it seemed low Since I wasn't knowing the fps this machine was supposed to give I didn't quite worry then but now when I checked the benchmark and fps on games people with the same machine are getting it started to worry me I get around 120 fps on csgo and around 110 on valorant even when both are ready light games and supposed to give 200+ on a GTX 1650 All my drivers are updated, windows updated, BIOS updated. He'll, I even reset and format my windows losing much data for this performance to increase but it has stayed the same. I disabled windows updates to manual, replaced the thermal paste, cleaned my laptop thoroughly and it still remains the same. Please help me since the manufacturer wants to change my motherboard now to get results which in my head seems unnecessary and will spoil the life of my laptop. Is there someone who faces the same problem and help me?

Why so few laptops with AMD graphics cards (UK)?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:28 AM PST

I've been browsing a few online laptop shops based here in the UK and have found only one laptop with an AMD graphics card. Linux doesn't play well with NVIDIA graphics cards compared to AMD, issues seem to come up every few months but I've never heard people complaining about AMD so I've sworn off NVIDIA for the next time I buy a laptop to give AMD a try. It's a bit disconcerting seeing only one laptop with AMD graphics though. Why the low amount and is it something that will be changed in the future?

A problem with my brand new laptop's screen

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:57 AM PST

I bought a brand new laptop, It got delivered to me yesterday. After I started using it, I've noticed a small spot on the left edge of my screen. It's most visible on light backgrounds, colors are altered like the burn tool does. On darker backgrounds, it looks lighter. I've searched the web but I couldn't find the exact problem. I've shared the pictures I took of it. Can you help me identify the problem?
I won't be sending my laptop back if It's not a huge problem that will not get worse, as I'm pretty sure they will label it as CID and charge me half the price of the laptop, at least the call I had with them about the problem made me think like that.
It's not a damage problem caused by me, I've handled it very carefully. It was there when I first unboxed the laptop (thanks to the pictures I took when I was doing the first install, I didn't notice it till hours later.)
I didn't take a picture of a dark background, it wasn't noticeable on my phone's camera.

    Laptop battery life

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:23 AM PST

I have a Lenovo Ideapad 5 14inch with 11th gen core i5. On the website it says that the battery will last up to 11 hours but mine lasts around 4 hours. Is this a defect or is it a marketing scam?

Please, where can I get all these drivers? I don't know the model of this computer. Windows 2000 didn't even recognize HDD and in XP basically nothing works. No internet either. If I get at least that running I can run driver tool. I wanted it for testing old software :-/ It can run modern Linux.

Is a 4K OLED panel worth the compromises?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:02 AM PST

I want to buy a laptop since building a desktop is not worth right now.
Prefering a R6 5600HS and RX 6700M equipped device, when ever that comes out.
Is going with a 4K OLED worth it over lower res 144hz ips, oled drain battery more, only 60hz, expensive to replace.
I am going to pair it with a 1440p 240hz desktop monitor so I can use it with a future pc build.
Will any one use the 4k panel, for content consumption, over the larger display?

MSI GS65 STEALTH WON'T CHARGE OR POWER ON

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:49 AM PST

I recently got my laptop like 3 months ago and I never had any power issues until I calibrated the battery using the built in msi battery calibration.

I was using my laptop to watch a movie and suddenly the pop up appeared saying that my battery is low. I ran and grabbed my charger so that I can continue to watch my movie but when I plugged in the charger it wasn't charging the laptop or show the charging LED. After that my laptop shut off and never powered on again.

At first I thought it was a charger problem so I bought a new charger and my laptop refuse to charge or power on. I even tried holding down the power button along with pressing the battery reset button. Now I really dont know what to do.

    Any help is appreciated.
