Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:05 PM PDT EditSo with the help of /u/cool110110 I was able to do this pretty easily. After enabling It looks like unlike the rest of the web traffic which goes straight through the router, traffic that is redirected in this manner runs through the pi-hole itself which slows it down a bit, but it still stays somewhere around 90MB/s which is plenty fast. I tell you what though, this Home Lab stuff is addicting. All this has done is make me want a proper setup... Original Post:I am hosting the domain cloud.domain.com on a server in my network and have NextCloud running. Because traffic goes outside and back in my network my sync speed is limited to my upload and any time I'm syncing a large file it destroys my internet speeds. For my desktops I tried to forward using the hosts file, but that didn't actually work like I thought it would and the traffic is going out and back in. This is super confusing and I don't understand it, but it's not really the source of this post. I am running an Asus RT-N66U with Asuswrt-Merlin and I use a pi-hole for DNS duties. I'm wondering if there is a way to forward all traffic that originates from within my network destined for cloud.domain.com to go straight to the local IP address. While I can configure all the desktop clients to go directly to the local IP, it won't work for any mobile device. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers. [link] [comments] |

VoIP phones and cabling issues Posted: 27 Sep 2019 06:18 AM PDT I'm not sure if I'm in the right place to ask this question since this is for a small business office. If this isn't the place, can someone refer me to a different sub? We're having some weird issues with our VoIP phones on some of the wall jacks in our building. I imagine this has to do with the pinout in the jacks. Sometimes, on certain jacks, when we use straight through cables we've created, the phone receives power but no data. When we use pre-made straight through cables, they seem to work. When we create crossover cables and use them on these jacks, they also seem to work. We've ruled out the homemade straight through cables being mis-wired, as they test positively and work with laptops we connect to the aforementioned wall jacks. All of our cabling is Cat 5E. What could be a cause for homemade straight through cables not working, but pre-made straight through cables and homemade crossover cables working? Any insight is greatly appreciated. What is a good "set-it-and-forget-it" wireless router for my parents? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 09:32 AM PDT Long story short after they switched ISPs the new wireless router has been giving them issues. The modem is fine and Ethernet connections work great but because all their devices are wireless they get IP address configuration errors weekly. Can I get a recommendation for a good "set-it-and-forget-it" router with very good wireless capabilities? I am not in the house so if it could also have an app interface and simply UI that a novice could handle that would be great too. [link] [comments] |
[Unsolved]My internet has slowed down Posted: 27 Sep 2019 02:17 PM PDT My internet is at around 15-30 Mbps when it used to be ~200 Mbps. Occasionally, the internet will be gone for a few seconds. I've called in but they didn't see any issues. My modem was exchanged but the problem is still here. I was wondering if anyone could diagnose it before I call for a technician. Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:57 PM PDT I've tried Googling but I thought I'd come to the experts. I'm setting up a up a home entertainment server (Plex or Plex like). Currently running a "regular" ethernet with speeds of 20mb or so. So I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a diagram, articles or Amazon wishlists of items that are needed for either a 10gb or quad 1gb nic setup. Thanks in advance. Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:41 PM PDT We have a kind of complicated network. D-Link DSR-500 router, four old model UniFi access points, three Velop mesh access points in bridge mode. The access points and a bunch of hard wired devices plug into a D-Link gigabit switch, which in turn plugs into one port on the router. WAN side of the router plugs into the required ATT all-in-one box which in turn plugs into the fiber interface box. ATT WiFi is turned off. For about two days DHCP (served by the DSR) just wasn't working; it was like the daemon was dying. I actually went from a DSR-250 to the -500 during this outage trying to resolve the problem. And now just as suddenly everything is ok again. I am beyond perplexed and wonder if anyone has any suggestions to look at. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:28 PM PDT Hello, I want to set up a residential network, but I have no idea what sort of gear is popular right now. I would like to get my hands on a POE switch and 2-3 APs, Ubiquiti seems to be popular with small networks... its what i see on the shelves. but I am not familiar with any of their equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations for access points? Trying to keep them under $150 bucks each. [link] [comments] |
Stupid question but can you have two separate lines when using 4g lte as your home wifi? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:19 PM PDT I don't know if my question even makes sense but I'm entirely clueless when it comes to all of this. Essentially we just upgraded our home internet and it's been great but we're still slowing down occasionally. We were thinking about just buying another line for the upstairs like we have in past houses. However we're using lte so there's an antennae, so how does that work? Are we getting the best possible already out of our provider? [link] [comments] |
Single mesh / .ax / output device sharing Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:08 PM PDT First post on this sub.... Before we start, I've searched WiFi 6 / .ax / mesh topics on here. I haven't really found the answer to this dilemma:
Challenges: 1. Two HP printers aren't both visible on all access points (there are close to two separate APs)

Any pointers / suggestions would be most appreciated. Given that the fibre connection taps out about 90mbps download speed during uncontested periods of the day, don't think I would really benefit speed wise especially as we do almost no intra-lan transfers. [link] [comments] |
Wifi speed too slow, time to go wired? (Question) Posted: 27 Sep 2019 03:56 PM PDT Ive been using our wifi for years now and game download spean are usually around 1.5mb (is this slow?). Would this download speed increase when I go wired instead? Reason I haven't used wired connection is that I don't like the look of an ethernet cable running across the room to my room. Advice please [link] [comments] |
New home has existing network, need help identifying equipment. Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:24 AM PDT Hello, I just moved into my new house which has an existing network structure. I am familiar with the router / switch and I think I know what the POE injector is. However I'm unsure about the configuration. The house has CAT5e / coaxial connections in a majority of the rooms via the telecom module. However I've read that this is strictly for phones so I need some clarification. I think the coaxial switch / splitter(?) Leads to hdmi outputs for TVs. I am unsure about the modules along the base. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Sep 2019 02:49 PM PDT Essentially the gateway of my Eero is 192.168.7.0/24 The gateway of my AT&T router which is using DMZPlus mode to forward all traffic to Eero is 172.xxxxx When I hard wire my Raspberry Pi into the switch which goes to my Eero, for some reason the Raspberry Pi is bypassing Eero's DHCP and using my router's DHCP. Is there not a way to stop this? Is this always how switches connected to routers have worked? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:08 AM PDT I have 2 latest models of Airport Extremes connected via Ethernet. I have one SSID and password for the 4 (roaming network). About 6 months ago I got a new neighbor on my right and a month ago a new neighbor on my left. This could def be my issue but what can I do about it? Should I keep the roaming set up I have? Should I just have one used to 'extend'? Should I separate the 2.4 and 5? These are the types of things I'm hoping you guys could help me out with. THANK YOU. [link] [comments] |
How to remove the head/plug of ethernet cable Posted: 27 Sep 2019 02:58 AM PDT So it looks something like this https://i.imgur.com/QGBjZiD.jpg I just want to remove the head of the cable and then put it back, because I had difficulty passing it through into the adjacent room. The head looks like a metal/platic mix as shown in pictures. I have seen videos on how to do it but most of them show cutting the cable which is not what I intend to do. [link] [comments] |

New Home - Wired Options vs. Mesh Wireless? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 09:42 AM PDT Hello all, My wife and I just bought our first house. It's ~2100 sq. ft. with a finished basement with the main floor and the bedrooms on the second floor. I've always wanted to run Ethernet in whatever house I lived in (and still do) but I'm worried about the logistical nightmare of getting cable run to the upstairs. It's a 4 bedroom house and one of them will be a dedicated office. In the basement there are like 7 RJ-45 jacks on the walls and I'm only certain of where one of them goes. I even borrowed the tone generator from work to try and tone jacks in other rooms with no luck. There is also a LOT of coax running all over the house that the previous owners pushed DirecTV with. I have YouTube TV and play via Nvidia Shields and Amazon Fire sticks and don't plan on ever going back to standard cable/satellite. I thought about using the existing coax to pull the network cable but coworkers pointed out that many times contractors will staple the coax to the studs/rafters to keep it out of the way so that is likely not an idea that will work. My plan is to have the cable company bring their coax into the basement and then run cable to the other rooms and then just install unmanaged switches in the rooms where I'd need more than one drop – ie. the office. I currently have a Ubiquiti AP AC Lite coming off of an EdgeRouter X providing PoE that I'd like to continue to use if possible. There's a single existing cat 5 cable running up in the wall and through the floor into the living room that I'm planning on using in the short term for the AP and then plan to use that cable to pull cat 6 or 6a so that I can get gigabit speeds. That part is pretty simple and straightforward. I'd also like to add maybe 3 additional drops in the living room where the wife wouldn't like to see a switch hanging out with our TV equipment and at least one in each of the bedrooms upstairs. My questions are:

DL360e g8 fluctuating upload speed Posted: 27 Sep 2019 05:45 AM PDT Hello, I am having an issue with networking in my "homelab" (I have a server at home and one colocated at a datacenter, this particular issue happens with the colocated server but it does not stem from the uplink provided by the DC) The server has a 366i adapter and is running server 2019, wamp, and hyper-v and has a gigabit uplink. I host files on the wamp server and download them to my DL360p g8 that I have at home. Whenever I download a file over 1gb (through browser or wget), something strange happens: the download speed shown is what I expect it to be (say ~50MB/s). However, after a second or so of downloading, progress pauses, it still shows the download speed but it does not change. A second or 2 later, the download continues. Here is a link to a screenshot of the network activity on the server I am downloading from: https://i.imgur.com/wft8LCT.png I had this same issue on a dedicated server I had a little while ago that was running server 2016+wamp+hyper-v as well, so maybe the issue stems from there somehow. I have also tried to go on the server itself, go to localhost in the web browser, and download the same file, the issue still happens. All drivers are up to date, and I am not sure where to look. Any input is appreciated. Edit: I just put a 10gb test file on one of the hyper-v vms with apache2 running and downloading works fine. I guess I could just host files on a linux vm, but does anyone have an idea of what may cause this issue with my current setup? [link] [comments] |
HALP! Funky cable modem issues Posted: 27 Sep 2019 01:09 PM PDT I have had Optimum for about 5 years and the service was rock solid. Until about a months or two ago. Now I started seeing drops where modem clearly restarts itself. While I admit that cable is not really my forte I thought I would gather enough information and someone at Optimum will be able to do something about it. Unfortunately even with that data no one at Optimum knew anything. I'm sure at some point I will get it all fixed and in between I'm pretty good at debugging workarounds but ... So, reddit, halp. Details:
Observable Problem: periodic drop of connection. looks like a full network reset. Modem comes back online within a minute or two, happens at random intervals. TCP keepalives to far away lands die. The modem log looks like this (mac addresses scrambled) except for the manufacturer ID:
In status I get a lot of errors in the downstream channels, especially in the bottom ones: DCID Freq Power SNR Modulation Octets Correcteds Uncorrectables Downstream 1 20 699.00 MHz 1.89 dBmV 33.38 dB 256QAM 38878435 0 0 Downstream 2 21 705.00 MHz 2.51 dBmV 33.60 dB 256QAM 24974435 0 0 Downstream 3 22 711.00 MHz 3.08 dBmV 33.83 dB 256QAM 25316986 9 0 Downstream 4 24 723.00 MHz 3.08 dBmV 33.72 dB 256QAM 25761884 112 0 Downstream 5 25 729.00 MHz 2.86 dBmV 34.08 dB 256QAM 24821082 397 0 Downstream 6 26 735.00 MHz 3.50 dBmV 33.83 dB 256QAM 25461482 0 0 Downstream 7 27 741.00 MHz 4.22 dBmV 34.08 dB 256QAM 27638467 1 0 Downstream 8 28 747.00 MHz 3.63 dBmV 28.50 dB 256QAM 31674615 11775681 2291408 This is with the modem being online for about 1 hour and 10 minutes. I'm currently fetching ~3GB file at a slow but steady ~64kbit/sec push from the west coast with "reasonable" session timeouts. It has been breaking for last 3 days. Wiring:The wiring has not changed for 5 years. This is the second leg to the outside of the box of the cable company outside the house. It was wired this way by the tech and i am fairly certain it worked fine. [cablecobox]---------[splitter-1]-----[splitter-2]----[cablemodem]---<home-network> <home-network> is ruled out as a source of the issue. [spitter-1] has a cable TV box connected to it and a link to the [splitter-2] [splitter-2] has a cable modem and a TV box There's also another leg going out of the cablecobox going to a different floor of the apartment that has a TV. I do not know if cablebcobox has a splitter inside it as well. Since stuff worked well i did not pay attention. Recent changes:There was a storm a couple of months ago which knocked out old cable boxes. They died. Cable modem continued to funciton. Cable boxes were replaced. I sort of think that's when the internet started becoming unstable but up until last week it was not terrible. Since that point i have tried several things:
This ( and that the errors are concentrated in the last block is making me wonder if the problem is with the way the cable is ran ( splitter ). What am I looking to achieve:Cheapest solution to the problem, preferably without having random optimum contractors here ( because by god they are clueless and slow: they don't even understand that if they solve my problem they will get my personal thanks that they can use anywhere they want. Or maybe they do and still can't figure it out) [link] [comments] |
Conduit – metal or plastic; diameter; other recommendations Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:51 PM PDT Hi all – I got the conduit, conduit, conduit message loud and clear here. So what kind of conduit is optimal for running Cat 6? When I look at Home Depot, I see a lot of rigid metal conduit and some plastic conduit like this. What should I be looking for? Someone mentioned half inch diameter in another thread. Is that big enough? I assume that connectors are never run through the conduit, just the raw cable? Relatedly, is conduit expected to hold several lines at the same time, like coax + Cat 6, or Cat 6 + fiber, etc.? I'll need to run RG6 from an outdoor TV antenna to at least a couple of TVs, and I'll need Cat 6 wall jacks at those same TVs for streaming. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Problem connecting my MoCa adapter to my computer Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:09 AM PDT Hey! I'm on the Fios network, trying to physically connect my PC to the network so that I can play online properly. Since I don't have Ethernet infra in my apt, I must use the existing Coax infra. I've gotten myself a g1100 router and an Actiontech WCB3000N to function as a MoCa adapter... Here's how things are connected: Fios ONT -----(Ethernet)---> G1100 ----(Coax)----> wall wall ----(coax)----> WCB3000N ------(Ethernet)----> PC A Verizon tech support told me to put a splitter between and ONT and the G1100 and connect that to the wall, so I tried that too. The WCB3000N Coex led is up. My PC (I tried 2 different machines) just won't connect. ipconfig is missing Default Gateway and I can't connect to the WCB3000N's admin UI. Thoughts about what I should do next? [link] [comments] |
Asus router slower than ISP router Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:58 AM PDT Wait what? At first my Asus router was giving me way more than my outdated ISP router. Like a week ago my internet started going slow as hell so I called my ISP and they came and changed my modem and my router. My old modem/router didn't have dual band so I used my Asus router for that. I have 100 megabits hires and my Asus router was giving me like 70 in 2.4 and 90 almost 100 in 5.0 witch was great. Now, with the new ISP router that is dual band, I'm getting almost 200 in the 5.0 band. I'm not getting even 50 in my Asus router. Should I change the cable? Is the router damaged? What should I do? Note:I disconnected my Asus router from for like 2 weeks because I went in vacation and I didn't want any power surges damaging my router. Maybe that was it? [link] [comments] |
Whats the Difference between Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 & ASUS RT-AC5300 Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:36 AM PDT Whats the Difference between Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 & ASUS RT-AC5300 All i can really see is that one is a 5Gbps & the other is 10Gbps. Is their anything else? One better than the other? I did some research and a comment from AUG 2019 says the AX model is incomplete & not worth buying at this time. Are their any other negatives or positives between the two? Edit: more info on network. i am talking Wired speeds. And i know each clients NIC has its limitations. All my clients have /1000. And they have to be able to have the hardware to utilize it. Why we have a RAID or SSD. I am looking to get 5Gbps through the router from Multiple clients at once that are all wired. I have been using CAT7 FFTP ( pretty sure thats right Foil shield then foil shield each twisted pair, either way good enough) Looking to replace the main router TP Archer and use the old TP Archer for OpenVPN only. Only wireless clients i have are the 6 Chromecast, 6 Fire TV's, 8 Tablets, up to 16 smartphones, & 3 laptops. Mind you they do not all run at the same time. But our 12 wired PC's do & 3 intranet Servers. Oh and then their is the security cameras... fuck 4 servers. But that's on its own air gaped network. Only connected manually for update. Any logging software to keep track of reasons for disconnections from server Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:29 AM PDT So recently I've been playing a new game, and have been getting disconnected from the server quite often. I was wondering if there is any kind of logging tool so I can monitor my network and track the cause of it, whether it is that server not responding, or is it on my end. Recently I had my internet disappear for a minute quite often with router event log message xdsl linestate down, so my ISP technician made a visit, and told it was problem in the cable, and changed something, and I haven't faced these issues anymore that my whole internet disappears, but today I got disconnected again. I'm just curious if it's my end, because I didn't see anything peculiar in the router event log at the time of disconnection, so was wondering if there are programs that log a specific program's network. Thank you for reading, sorry if this is not home networking related. [link] [comments] |
