How to setup a home network with privacy as the main focus Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:40 AM PDT Hello everyone, I have the desire to enhance the privacy of my home network and I am little bit lost about where to start, let's say I'm not quite the expert regarding networking and I need your help. I live in a small apartment (1 bedroom and 1 living room) in Canada; I use a desktop (running on Windows 10), an Android device (Google Pixel), a tablet (Samsung Galaxy), a SmartTV (Sony) and a Plex server (installed on my desktop). I always use Firefox on every device (and always on private mode). I use uBlock, HTTPS everywhere, Ghostery as add-ons. I use DNS66 both on my phone and tablet. My SmartTV is connected through WiFi (using Plex and Netflix). I also scrutinized every parameters regarding privacy about collecting/sending data, personalize adds, and turned them all off. Did also that on Windows and Android as well I use this router (TL-WR940N) and this modem (Arris TM822G). I have no speed issue. I have already applied the basics rules :- chose a complicated router password, changed router's admin credentials, changed network name, turned off WPS, kept the firmware up to date, filtered mac addresses, disabled SSID broadcast, turned remote management off. I ran the Cloudflare browsing security check and failed ''ecrypted SNI'' and ''Secure DNS''. I have a budget around 375$ to improve my home network, I don't have a RasberryPie. My main goal is to protect my data from my devices and also improving the overall security of the network. I tried to find the information online, but as I am not an expert, there are a lot of terms and vocabulary that I don't master and I quickly got lost. I need your help to guide me lol ! So what do you recommend me to do ? Thank you in advance for your help and I wish you a good day ! Edit: *added disabled SSID broadcast, turned remote management off, some other details ! Adding a third MOCA to my setup Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:43 PM PDT I currently have a 2 moca adapter setup in my house and it works. Coax enters the house in the basement. I have a splitter sending coax to my family room, where I have my moca, cable modem, and router. The second coax line off the splitter goes up to the top floor office, where I have a moca adapter feeding in to a switch. That all works fine. THere's a third coax line I'd like to leverage for my basement (wehre the coax comes in). Can I simply swap the two way splitter with a 3 way splitter, and add a third moca adapter where I want the basement feed to be? Is there any concern of packet loss or some other kind of network degredation with adding a third moca kit to the mix? proposed diagram: https://i.imgur.com/lJ4QSvH.png moca adapter (pair) I am currently using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086Q3LTLM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 [link] [comments] |
Moca adapter or powerline adapter for better internet speeds? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:01 PM PDT I'm currently using these powerline adapters in my current apartment, but I'll be moving to a place with a coax cable in the room. Would it be better to get a coax moca adapter (with 2 ethernet ports) for the internet speed boost? [link] [comments] |
100mbps Fiber vs. 400mbps cable Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:37 AM PDT Hey everyone, working on buying a new house and have two options for internet. Wondering which of the two would be better for gaming/streaming! Help would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
What's the best option for a USB WiFi adapter? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 07:03 PM PDT After having issues with a Netgear A6210 USB WiFi adapter constantly dropping its connection, I figured it was time for a new adapter. I had just replaced the motherboard in my PC, and screwed up by getting one that didn't have built in WiFi, and the A6210 was just what I had laying around in a box, leftover from another project. Enter another Netgear product. A Nighthawk A7000 USB WiFi adapter. I bought this adapter because of its pretty solid reviews on both Best Buy and Amazon, and compatibility with newer WiFi standards. It was $80. Two months later, and my $80 Wifi adapter is a paperweight. It won't keep a connection any longer than about 5-10 minutes, then I must unplug the adapter and reconnect it, and use the internet for another 5-10 minutes. This just started happening yesterday, and nothing has changed in my PC or network configuration since connecting this adapter. After some quick Google searches, I've learned that this is apparently an extremely common issue with not only the A7000, but also the A6210. I have done everything recommended by other people:
None of these have worked. Needless to say, I'm incredibly annoyed. I am never buying another Netgear product as long as I live. Unfortunately, my PC is in a separate room in the house from my AT&T router (other WiFi devices in this room work perfectly fine) and, due to the fact that I live with other people who don't like tripping over things, stringing a long ethernet cable up a flight of stairs and around corners likely isn't going to be an option, as badly as I want to do that. What would you guys recommend for a USB WiFi adapter for casual internet use, plus watching YouTube and some online gaming? [link] [comments] |
Patch Panel for Ethernet, Coaxial, and Speakers Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:49 PM PDT Hi, everyone. Thanks for the great community! I recently moved into a house with Cat 5e running into every room. All cables lead back to a closet in my office and terminate in RJ45 connectors that just dangle out of the wall with only about 6-12 inches of spare cable. So, I am thinking that it might be best to find a patch panel to terminate the cables into. The caveat here is that there are also a bunch of coaxial cables and speaker wire that terminate in this closet as well. Is there a good solutions to terminate all of these cables cleanly in or on the wall? [link] [comments] |
One computer seems to have download speed capped on my home network? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:19 PM PDT My PC hits the gigabit speeds it's supposed to properly and downloads are ridiculously fast on it. It downloads things at 100 MB/s. My laptop, on the other hand, is downloading at 1.4 MB/s. At a cafe by my house, it hits 30 MB/s on Wi-Fi. I'm hitting 1.4 MB/s regardless of if it's Wi-Fi or ethernet at home. Running a Speedtest on it wields Gigabit results, though. I've tried using the same ethernet for my PC and laptop. I've checked if I have a bandwidth limit on Windows settings. I checked my router settings to the best of my knowledge (which is not much). The ethernet is a 2.5 gig adapter & the Wi-Fi is AX. Thoroughly confused about why this happening or how to fix it. Thank you for any help! [link] [comments] |
Crimping trouble with specific modular connectors, left scratching my head. Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:59 PM PDT I bought some CAT6A to wire my home, Commscope 1091SD CMR-LP U/UTP cable, and bought Simply45 S45-1100 load bar type modular connectors to go with the cable, but for the life of me I cannot get my test tool to read anything but shorted pins with these modular connectors. Even a connector built and crimped with no wire inside reads shorted pins. I've made CAT6 cables with pass-through modular connectors just fine but I have had zero success rate with these load bar type connectors. I have used an Ideal FT-45 Pass-through crimper on both my successful cat6 cable and unsuccessfully on this cat6a, and also borrowed a hardware store special southwire ratcheting crimper to see if it would do any better, ended up getting the same results. Am I using the wrong crimpers or are my modular connectors somehow faulty? [link] [comments] |

Want to switch but need a landline Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:16 PM PDT Currently I use Spectrum but I saw Starry Internet and noticed it was cheaper and I want to switch, the problem is I use my fax machine a lot and outside of isps I'm not sure where to get landlines. I've heard of online fax lines but as far as I know those don't use fax machines, any idea on what to do? [link] [comments] |
Intermittent connectivity and dropouts between modem and router Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:20 PM PDT Hi all, I recently got my first apartment and my dad's old router. It's a Linksys WRT3200ACM. The only ISP in my area was cable through Spectrum (ew), which isn't the greatest company to work with but it's all I could do. I got their modem, which is the 2.5Gbit Hitron one. Set up my network, scanned and set a channel that was unused by anything else around me, etc. Everything looked normal. The issue that I'm having is that about once a minute, the router will stop talking to the modem. The modem has been up 100% of the time, never disconnecting, always talking to the ISP. The router, however, abruptly loses connection to the internet (presumably the modem), tries to find it again and does, and then all goes back to normal. About a minute or two later the process repeats. I can watch this happen from the indicator lights on the front panel. This happens on both a wired Ethernet connection and through WiFi. I've restarted everything, used three different cables, cleaned the jacks, flashed both the stock Linksys firmware and DD-WRT to the router, all to no avail. Both give me the same issues. I think I've limited it down to the router though. Plugging in directly to the modem doesn't give me the same connection drops that I get when wired into the router. Could it be a bad jack or the router dying in general? [link] [comments] |
WIFI not working but LAN is??? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:03 PM PDT Hi all. Title is the problem, here is more context to help. I live in an apartment building and a weird but cool thing they do is free WIFI. No security on the wifi, it is just called "APARTMENT NAME WIFI". I know using this comes with its own risks especially without a VPN but this has worked for me so far without major hiccup since may 2018. Recently, the wifi is not working. It shows up as an option on my multiple devices, but it is not sending internet I guess once I connect? However, in my apartment, there is also a LAN port on the wall, and I use that directly to my PS4 for gaming and streaming and that still works fine without hiccup. The property manager can't seem to fix the new problem, so I am looking for my own solution. I am wondering if I can plug in just any old router from that ethernet port in the wall and create my own branch of the apartment's wifi with that router and connect via wifi using that? While also running an ethernet out of the router to maintain a direct connection to the PS4? Feasible? TYIA! tldr; can i plug in any old router into a working ethernet port and create wifi [link] [comments] |
Looking for modem/routers that can do a "half-bridge" Posted: 02 Sep 2021 07:19 PM PDT Hi 🙂 I'm looking for something that can do a half-bridge meaning it can authenticate PPPoE for me and so I can use my router on DHCP. Why? My router (Unifi Dream Machine) apparently doesn't have the hardware to do PPPoE, so it has degraded performance because it has to use the CPU instead. The workaround is to not use PPPoE. I could also just put my router behind another router on DMZ. But if possible, I want to avoid this. Thank you for all your advice [link] [comments] |
small school installation (Looking for Mesh or good routers) Posted: 02 Sep 2021 12:37 PM PDT We are still doing online classes but we are having a lot of problems with our local network. Here in Mexico my options are very limited and add to that that costs aren´t that great. We have a 200 MB symmetric fiber optic connection but our main problem is our WIFI routers, they suck and I´ve finally convinced my boss to invest on good equipment for WIFI support. We are talking about 8 to 10 teachers at the same time on different classrooms each, I have 2 TP-LINK TL-WR840N which I plan to remove and I´m either looking at a Linksys Velop AC2200 WHW0303 or a Google WiFi AC1200 (3 nodes). Would those work? We have a combination of concrete, drywall and many windows. [link] [comments] |
Gigabit speed on older laptop but not on newer PC? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:32 PM PDT Hey all, Recently upgraded to gigabit speed through cox. I'm using a Surfboard SB8200 modem, connected to a Asus RT-AX86 router. The Ethernet cable I'm using is this one. Plugging in directly from my router to my 5 year old laptop computer, speedtest is showing 700+ dl speeds. Using the same ethernet cable plugged into my PC (1 year old), speedtest is showing 400 MAX download speeds. I've confirmed that my ethernet status is set to recieve 1.0 Gbps. I've also tried other ethernet cables with similar results. What gives? [link] [comments] |
FiOS Coax to ONT and MOCA Question Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:14 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am upgrading from 100 /100 to 300/300 fios which means that I can't do coax out of the ONT anymore. My issue is that I have about 2/3 of the apartment wired for ethernet, but the ONT is not really in the best place. Since I'm upgrading my Mom and she lives far away enough that it's not to easy to get there on a whim, I was thinking of doing ONT > Ethernet > MOCA Bridge 1 > Moca Bridge 2 > Ethernet > Fios G1100 since I already have the router working with coax neatly in another closet. Few questions, will this work with 2 moca bridges for WAN - I've only ever seen lan referenced, but I guess it shouldn't matter because it's still layer 1/2 ? Also, is there any chance that I only need 1 bridge because I've read somewhere that the G1100 has a built in one? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Mesh wifi-AX recommendation for bridge mode / access point? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:48 PM PDT I have a wired router I plan to keep for the foreseeable future, it handles SQM on gigabit without breaking a sweat, all the features I need etc I'm in need of a WiFi access point for my home, looking towards mesh system, but I want one that plays nice with my main router. I've found that both the Asus XT8 and the 6600 Orbi have what I need, any tips for choosing one over the other, or maybe suggest something I've overlooked? [link] [comments] |
Help with whole house Ethernet. Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:47 PM PDT So I'm the family/friend tech guy but this has me confused. My friends moved into a new house and I can't figure out how to hook up the whole house Ethernet. New info: So this is what the router is plugged into right now. Nothing is plugged into the Ethernet ports on the router. It is in an office. https://ibb.co/VLQjNXX This is in the closet downstairs. I assume this is where the router should go. But I don't see the same port the router is plugged into right now. https://ibb.co/qMbRRmt This is some example of the ports in the walls upstairs. This is Ethernet right? https://ibb.co/414bQRt https://ibb.co/q5g7v5t Thank you for your help. 🙌 [link] [comments] |
What's a good budget mesh wifi system to get? For Hong Kong concrete apartments Posted: 01 Sep 2021 10:50 PM PDT I mean HK flats aren't big, they pretty cramped but the main culprit of poor signals are the thick structural concrete walls. Currently I have DLink Covr mesh system and it sorta sucks as the signal suddenly drops and speeds vary and I cannot seem to game as a constant ping. My internet speed is 1gbps, I've attached a picture of my floor plan (The floor plan has poor resemblance of wall thickness) (red color is my flats boundary and blue no.1 is the main mesh router location while no.2 is the extended mesh) despite my plan being 1gpbs I get around 200 to 300 when I'm near the main mesh with my laptop (thinkpad p1 gen 2) when coming close to my no.2 mesh router it drops to 70 to 30 and it's not stable at all. So I would like to know the best mesh router that's both affordable and strong to give good penetration through walls as well good latency for games? Some say I need QoS functions in routers? Please help Thanks alot! [link] [comments] |
How do I activate the ethernet ports in my apartment? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 03:55 PM PDT https://imgur.com/gallery/9JokZbG Currently, we have the ATT router connected to the only active ethernet wall jack in one of my roommates' bedrooms. Do I have to move the router to be connected to the ONT, add ethernet heads to each of the blue ethernet cables pictured, and then plug them into the router ethernet ports? ATT said they could send someone to do it for 150 dollars which to me as a college student is ridiculous, so I'd rather try to do it on my own. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Advice on TP-Link Archer C5400X and gigabit fiber Posted: 02 Sep 2021 03:34 PM PDT The ISP for my condo building just upgrade us to gigabit fiber from our old speeds of 100Mbps down and up. I've had a TP-Link Archer C5400X v1 for the past couple years. It always seemed fine, if not overkill, for the previous 100Mbps, but it doesn't seem to be taking full advantage of the new gigabit speeds; despite specs indicating "Peak 802.11ac performance: 859.5Mbps (at 15 feet)" On both hardwired and wifi speed tests, it's topping out around 300-400Mbps down and up (hardwired it got up to 500 down and 800 up a couple times but not consistently). Speed test through the router app indicate that it's getting 900+ down and 850+ up to the router. So, I guess, any thoughts on why the stark difference between the router app speed test and tests with various devices? Should this router actually be capable of more? Are there recommendations for newer routers that would better take advantage of the gigabit speeds? Some other notes: - did a full factory reset and new setup. Speeds are same as before reset. - I've tried turning Smart Connect on and off; no difference - With smart connect off, I've tried different 5GHz channel and channel width combinations to no real benefit. - There seems to be no difference with # of devices connected. - distance doesn't seem to matter much either. Condo is ~1200sqft, I get the same speeds just about anywhere. I'm a networking novice, so I haven't dug any further than the above. Any advice is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2021 03:25 PM PDT At my family's home we have xfinity internet, which comes with access to the xfinitywifi hotspot. Could I set up a wifi extender to connect to the xfinitywifi hotspot at home (while I have access to the router). When i go back to college (don't have access to the router here), where I only get a strong connect in one corner of my apartment, will the wifi extender recognize and extend the xfinitywifi hotspot throughout my apartment? In short: is it possible to set up a wifi extender at one location and move to a new location with a similarly named network, will the extender continue to recognize the network and extend the signal? Also is a wifi extender or wifi repeater a better option, if this is possible? Thanks for any help or direction where to find info. [link] [comments] |
Seeking router advice on 6-person apartment Posted: 02 Sep 2021 11:31 AM PDT Hi all, I live in an apartment of 6 people and we're trying to find a wifi solution that satisfies everyone without breaking the bank. Here's a summary: - There are 6 of us, all college students who take some of our classes on zoom. It's probably safe to assume that no more than 4 people will be on a call at the same time - 4 of us game frequently (LoL, CSGO, Rocket League, etc). One gamer uses ethernet, but the others don't have ethernet ports. We can't route new ethernet. Having a stable connection with enough range is a big priority here. - Everyone is within 75 feet of our coax port/modem/router, but one gamer is upstairs - Our provider package is for 400mbps. We currently have a TP-link ac1750 and are having connectivity problems while on zoom/gaming, especially in the upstairs room. We've looked into gaming routers, mesh networks, extenders, the dream machine, etc. and are very confused. We just want to be able to game/zoom without disconnection or noticeable packet loss. Something $200 or less would be great. [link] [comments] |
Running cables behind molding/trim/door frames, etc? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 03:02 PM PDT I'm looking to set up a wired home network with 5+ ethernet access points. The complication is I can't get into the attic where it would help to route cables and my basement is partial and not where I need it. So I'm expecting to have to run behind trim and around doorframes. It seems like a nightmare to me. (I made a crappy diagram). Does anyone have any suggestions to make this less of a nightmare? Looking to install a better router with my current DSL modem/router box. What do I need to do? Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:57 PM PDT Newbie here... sorry if this type of post isn't welcome. I have DSL through CenturyLink. The speeds are good enough with wired connections, but the Wi-Fi is a lot worse than it should be. I'm guessing the root cause is that I'm using their all-in-one (model C1100Z) as my router. I've played around with changing the Wi-Fi channel, but I haven't found a permanent solution. My thinking is to go ahead and purchase a new router and use my current box exclusively as a modem. My 2 questions are:
