Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:39 AM PDT I want to install linux (mint specifically) on a laptop for my programming class after this summer. However, I would like to stay on windows 10 on my home desktop for now. I've heard ext4 is a faster file system that's nicely compatible with linux, but I also want to be able to transfer files between my dektop and laptop, which may become a problem since windows doesn't support ext4. Are there any programs to easily convert these files both ways, or do I have to choose NTFS for my laptop's file system? [link] [comments] |
Can I install Ubuntu's printer software into another distro? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:55 PM PDT I run BSPWM + Arch, and normally for these types of things I can figure it out or read the documentation. But printers are a nightmare and a headache and is honestly so bad to the point I might just nuke my computer and install Ubuntu just so I can freaking print. I really don't want to use Ubuntu, so is there a way that I could install their software on my Arch install? I tried messing with CUPS and setting it up, but my printer (Canon pixma m492) refuses to show up on my computer. On my brother's Ubuntu computer, though, it just showed up and works seamlessly. Is there a package I can install, and if so, what is it's name? [link] [comments] |
I need to parse through 94GB of data and pull out image files, how do I do this the best way? Posted: 31 Jul 2021 04:14 PM PDT I have 5 disks that my parents had lying around and they want the photos off of them. I have moved all of the data from the disks to an ssd to better handle parsing and whatnot but I don't know what the best way would be to dig down each directory and copy/move the images over to a separate directory. I plan to also run these file and check for duplicates but am unaware of what I should do for that but that is for another day. Anyone have ideas on how to go about this? [link] [comments] |
Max volume WAY lower than in Windows Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:17 AM PDT I recently installed ubuntu (20.04LTS), no issues so far except for the audio being really quiet at max volume, do i need additional drivers or something? since headphones and mic were working fine i didn't think so until i tried to max out the volume and it was really quiet, i used to leave the headset on the table and set the volume at 100% when i didn't want to wear them but now i can't listen to anything haha, if the "overamplification" setting is turned on it just clips the audio. Is there a way to completely uninstall gnome 40 and reinstall it on fedora34? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:14 AM PDT I was having fun with tweaking and I think I've broken it. I got fed up with those themes and wanted to go back to defaults so I deleted the themes but some changes didn't go back. Like my application icon is still apple icon. So I did dconf reset -f /org/gnome/ (sorry, I am really new to linux and I didn't know what I was doing exactely)
Is there a way to factory reset gnome 40 like completely? so that I can remove this apple icon and get my dash to panel working again? Thanks a lot in advance ;) Edit: I'm using fedora 34 CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: nvidia gtx 1660 super Edit 2:... I just realized dash to panel didn't work cos I didn't activate extensions lol sorry now I just need to remove apple icon and I still want to factory reset gnome 40 if needed. [link] [comments] |

[Mint] Internal HD not mounting or registering? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:14 AM PDT I have several extra hard drives that I run software off of. I have a fresh install of Mint and it doesn't seem to want to mount or register that all the drives are there. Other times to get programs to recognize that the drives are there, I have to actually go into the file browser and open it up to get the machine to see it. In the Devices section of the file browser, the particular HD isn't listed as being there however in the Disks dialogue it registers as being there and mounted. I have to hit the button to tell it to mount in the Disks menu. What's going on and how do I set the machine to automatically mount and make all the internal hard disks available when the machine starts? Nothing was moved or plugged/unplugged since the installation. I checked all the connections and everything is fine. [link] [comments] |
No wifi (and no ethernet port). How far up which creek am I? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:23 AM PDT Hi all. Just converted an Acer CB3-111-C670 to lubuntu 20.04. Internet is not working... didn't work during install or now that I'm at the desktop. The box doesn't have an ethernet port, either, so I'm having trouble trying to install network packages. lspci lists "01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 [8086:08b1] rev bb" as the network controller... not sure what I can do from here. TIA for any help! [link] [comments] |
Voice to typing software native for Linux? Or best options? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:20 AM PDT I am looking to do some writing but my hands are increasingly less able to do what I need of them, unfortunately. So, I am wondering what you all have experienced with any such writing software. I am a huge unfan of G**gle and they are my last choice, only. I prefer FOSS, but my technical ability is actually getting worse as time goes by and am considering even commercial, if it works well out of the box and is very flexible. Any suggestions? When I tried distro hopping a year or two ago, I saw something that looked promising called Almond? But, I think it was on the Clear distro package list? not sure. Any help is appreciated. Ubuntu 21.04 Cinnamon, i7 10th gen, 16 GB DDR4, 500GB NVME2, 1 TB HDD, all hardware was chosen based on tested and verified Linux compatability, semi-custom. Great hardware, mostly, no vid card. Error: symbol 'grub_register_command_lockdown' not found. Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:00 PM PDT Hello fellow noobs and others, I have a VM in Virtualbox running some debian, 9 or 10. Had been collecting virtual dust for a while (server for a game I haven't been playing), but now I ran an apt update and apt full-upgrade on it. And a reboot for good measure, with the intention to do some good old autoremove after. The result of trying to reboot:
There are actually like 4 or 5 different kernel versions on it (all the same except the -17), all get the same error, even when picking the recovery mode option. I've googled it, but... nothing helpful. Someone's Manjaro broke with a similar error, at least. But that thread descends into UEFI, dual boots and all kinds of stuff, bit lost on me. :( Has anyone faced this error as well? Can't come from nowhere... [link] [comments] |

How do I apply a patch over grub? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:11 AM PDT Tl;Dr: how do I apply this grub patch and will it even work? So to preface, I didn't have a USB drive at hand to install linux so I've been using DriveDroid on my phone to install linux so far. Recently I decided to switch over from the Xubuntu LTS version to Kubuntu 21.04. Now for reasons I'm not entirely sure of, DriveDroid ends up failing with Squashfs errors when I try to live boot a couple OSes (I'm not sure but since Xubuntu 20.04 worked but Kubuntu 21.04 and Pop OS 21.04 didn't, maybe it's a problem of newer versions?) Now because I can't be assed enough to buy a proper USB, I decided to flash the iso into a small partition I made for this purpose. After tinkering with /etc/grub.d/40_custom for a while I was able to finally get the iso to show up on the grib menu so I could boot up from it. But the install itself failed because partman errored out(error code 141 iirc). After googling the issue, I found a possible solution was to wipe the Xubuntu root partition off before retrying. Since I had created the iso drive after the I couldn't delete the root partition, since I had to mount the iso drive and it was sda8 while / was sda5. And now comes the stupid bit. I, in my brilliance decided that the best way out of this mess was to boot into my windows partition and nuke my root and swap partitions. Ofcourse the next time I booted up it went straight into the kubuntu install grub menu, instead of my usual one which lets me select windows or ubuntu. None of the options available in it work tho, they all error out saying Googling about this, I got precisely one post detailing about the issue and it recommended me this grub patch Now the issue is that I have no clue how I'm supposed to do that, do I have any clue where grib even is (if grub was in the root partition, did it get nuked too? Is that why my old grub menu is replaced by the kubuntu installation grub menu?) Any help fixing this whole mess would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:38 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm currently with Ubuntu 20.04 2 LTS on my machine, but want to switch do Debian and play a bit more. Ubuntu is literally made for babies and out-of-the-box usage, which is quite convenient, unlike Debian for instance where I need to manually config some things after installation. I put Debian 10 in a VM to try it, and see what exactly needs to be manually configed, and I stumbled several things just from the beginning. Users are not being automatically added to the sudoers group, but needed to be added manually, as well as that after adding a user to the sudoers, I could only run commands with sudo. I mean, I wasn't able to run "ifconfig", but "sudo ifconfig" only. Why's that? Where does the user need to be added, so I can run commands as in Ubuntu? In Ubuntu, I can run "ifconfig" without sudo. Many apologies for the lame question, guys, but really want to clear some thing out. I would also like to ask if you can advise what other similar to the things already mentioned should I configure after installing Debian, so I can make it more stable and for daily use? Thank you! Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:12 AM PDT OS: Manjaro XFCE CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x with stock cooler GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 MB: MSI B550-a Pro RAM: 16gb 3600-DDR4 Crucial Ballistix Randomly restarts while using graphics card to play video or run games. I tried putting the gpu in a Windows 7 system and it seemed to work fine, though I did not test it very extensively. I've reinstalled the drivers and it has happened on both the proprietary and non-proprietary drivers. The VGA debug light flashes when it crashes and the system freezes before it crashes. I'm rather new to linux and I built this computer 2 days ago. The graphics card is not new however. I'll try to respond with new info when asked, though I am very new to linux and may need instruction on how to retrieve debug info. I'll answer questions as promptly as possible. [link] [comments] |
Can't figure out how to get audio drivers for my ASUS laptop in Ubuntu Budgie Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:48 AM PDT First time poster. First distro. Absolute noob. Please be gentle. Just installed Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 on my ASUS Q505UAR laptop. The problem is that my speakers sound AWFUL anytime I play audio. The volume also sticks to either maximum or muted no matter how I try to scale it. I presume this is a driver issue. ASUS only provides drivers on their site for Windows 10 for my model. I've also tried going to "Additional Drivers" in Ubuntu, but it said "No proprietary drivers are in use." So I then attempted to go to linux-hardware.org to try and find a solution. I couldn't the install/command to work and I can't find my model in their existing database of hardware. I thought about emailing ASUS to see if I can get some help, but has anyone experienced this before? Is there something else I can do? [link] [comments] |

Unable to open lock screen, Debian 10 fresh installation Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:05 AM PDT Hi Yesterday I reinstalled Debian 10. Netinst and selecting KDE as the desktop. Everything works fine other than I can't open the lock screen. First boot works fine but when the screen locks, I can't get a login prompt. The mouse cursor is responsive so it hasn't froze. Only way I've found to get out of it is to switch to a terminal and rebooting or I've tried I've seen there's been some issues relating to nvidia drivers but I don't have nvidia drivers. Any tips? No sound via HDMI on Ubuntu 21.04 Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:28 AM PDT Hi, I've installed Ubuntu 21.04. I've followed a few AskUbuntu guides to no avail. My monitor is connected with an HDMI via an AMD RX 580 (Ellesmere) video card. I do not have any proprietary drivers installed. As it so happens, official amdgpu-install drivers or amdgpu-pro drivers aren't supported in 21.04. In Ubuntu Software as well I see no drivers for my video card.
In Settings > Sound > Output Device, there's only S/PDIF - Family 17h. I've tried I've installed Pulse Audio Volume Control ( Below is my Thanks for any help or suggestion in advance! :) [link] [comments] |
A guide asks me to "fix directories", what am I supposed to do? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:26 AM PDT I tried to give steam flathub access to my real file system and got an error that pointed me there: https://github.com/flathub/com.valvesoftware.Steam/wiki#i-want-to-add-external-disk-for-steam-libraries It says that I need to "fix some directories", like "$HOME/.local/share/ But it doesn't really elaborate on what it means by that. I thought mb it wanted me to fix permissions, but those seem to be fine. I already deleted steam flathub, but I'm afraid that mb I broke something important and that it needs to be fixed anyway. [Mystery] What does Linux do to motherboard that Windows doesn't? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:18 AM PDT So, a very strange thing happened to me and I am seeking an explanation. I have an old laptop (from 2015) and a PC (from 2018). In my laptop I have distro hopped a lot, jumping from different Linux distros and Windows back and forth. No problem. However, in my PC (specs: Ryzen 5 1600, MSI B350M mobo, 8GB RAM, GT 1030), Linux behaves strangely. I tried dual booting at first with different distros but they all behaved weirdly - sometimes audio won't work, sometimes graphics won't work, sometimes Wifi won't work, etc. So I permanently switched to Linux. That didn't make things a lot better. Even basic games like Dota, CSGO, Minecraft, etc were suffering and had strange graphics issues. Then, when I tried to install Windows...that's when things messed up. For some reason, my computer wouldn't boot into the Windows installer AT ALL - it would just reboot after showing MSI logo. I posted on techsupport sub several times but no response at all. Couldn't post to these Linux subs cause it was a tech support issue. After several tries, I called a computer mechanic. He tried to install too but failed - no matter what he did, the computer would NOT load Windows but happily loads Linux. He finally took the PC with him and after a day called me and said the PC has been successfully installed with Windows. When I asked what went wrong, he said he had to "reconfigure the mobo as Ubuntu completely messed up the motherboard and won't let Windows get installed in the drive at all". He warned me not to install Linux in this PC ever again and to use something like a VM. He didn't explain to me anything more. I am surprised. How come I don't have a problem installing and reinstalling Windows and Linux alternatively, yet a relatively better and modern machine can't do it. What is happening? What does Linux do to the mobo that messes it up? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:04 AM PDT All the proper resolutions show as available in Display settings. When I change the setting and click apply it does seem to use the proper resolution for only about 1 second and then it reverts to 1024x768. I've tried increasing the vram in my XML. But I can't lower the resolution either. Changing to 800x600 results in the same behavior. This doesn't happen when I change spice video to VGA, but then I get terrible performance. Any advice is welcome. Thanks and have a great day [link] [comments] |
