[Arch Linux] Can I use 'yay' to update AUR packages that I installed before installing 'yay'? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:04 AM PDT I'm new to Arch and relatively new to Linux (only used Pop_OS for a week before I switch to Arch 2 days ago). So far I have installed Google Chrome and Visual Studio Code through AUR by git clone + makepkg method, pretty much the recommended method. Today I decided to install yay as a package manager and AUR helper. However, I don't know if yay can track the already installed from AUR software or I have to do something to make yay check for updates for the AUR packages I installed without it, and Google results are murky at best. Help! [link] [comments] |
Apache port is saying 'filtered' - How can I set it to open? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:40 AM PDT I am having trouble with apache on my Ubuntu server. It is not a local machine, I am accessing it through SSH. When I run nmap -sS 127.0.0.1 ports.conf is setup listening to port 80 like so: Its worth mentioning I also tried setting it to Listen 0.0.0.0:80 I cant seem to get port 80 to open as opposed to being set to filtered. When I run sudo ufw status verbose So I don't think its a firewall issue. Running ss -tunapl Also, running iptables --table filter --list --numeric What could be the problem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:37 PM PDT Hey all, I see all the time about how 'flatpaks are the future,' and they seem to generate a lot of hype and overall be pretty popular. However, I never have a good experience with them. Ever. I've got a few examples: Today I downloaded the dolphin emulator and was unable to connect my controller because flatpaks run in their own environment. I've recently been learning to use blender on my desktop, which runs the .deb version. I downloaded the flatpak on my laptop today, and it seems like it's either got bugs or is just missing features. Maybe it's an older release? I don't know, I uninstalled and switched to .deb. Same situation happened with Lutris. The flatpak gave me nothing but issues, and so I switched back to the .deb. And when I tried the Steam flatpak, I could not figure out how to get it to read my secondary game drive. I eventually gave up and switched back to the .deb. I feel like I've gotta be missing something. What am I doing wrong? Every time I download a flatpak application, I end up switching back to the .deb. I think the only flatpak that I'm running with no issues is Spotify. So what's up? Why does everyone else have a better experience with them? What am I missing...? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:46 PM PDT I like to apologise to the Linux community , for the last several years i was blind to Linux and talked down about over several sites sharing my poor opinion of it. Today this has all changed after installing Ubuntu on my old tablet computer, for a good year my tablet computer has gotten slow with windows 10 upgrade and unusable not to mention unstable crashing every ten minutes. My partner stopped using it because it was so slow as well and i tried everything following guides online including reinstalling windows 10 but it was still slow. The tablet is a linx 1010b , its name kinda suggest its destiny was for linux. Now I installed Ubuntu and you know what its fast like new. It even took my wacom tablet with out needing to install software on it. My touch screen works aswell as does the wifi. I installed Krita and it works. I took a gamble and it installed blender 2.9 something and it worked, i did not expect this on such a old low performance machine. I'm a fool not believing in Linux, its changed my opinion. Linux is amazing. Could someone please recommend a a light weight distro with a mac theme please it as this could really benefit from a light weight distro, my ram is pretty small. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Change boot device order by default to windows Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:24 PM PDT Long back I dual booted my system, installed ubuntu alongside windows. But while removing the same instead of safe removing the OS I deleted the partition in which I had Ubuntu. Now since then whenever my computer starts it loads the ubuntu grub loader program I need to manually change the boot option to windows every time I start my computer. I tried changing the default to windows, but I don't know why its resetting the option to Ubuntu every time. How do I make windows the default option also is there any way to delete this ubuntu grub loader? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:26 PM PDT Hello, I tried reinstalling Ubuntu on my dual boot system because it was slow. However after I started the reinstalation when it was doing grub-install it failed with an error. I tried several fixes for it and tried to install grub. Failed... I tried getting back the windows boot loader with a stick, failed. It said that I don't have permissiom to run bootsec or something like that. Note that I still had Ubuntu on my system. I am seriously lost now, windows partitions are fine so I can grab the important data and do a fresh install. Windows is installed on a ssd and also uses the hdd. Ubuntu was only on hdd. If possible I would like to have only windows on my system now. I will probably use Linux only in a VM. [link] [comments] |
Which is the official balena etcher site? Balena.io/etcher or balena-etcher.eu? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:59 PM PDT I'm kinda lost. I usually use rufus, but I did some shenanigans where using rufus caused problems. I did them on my laptop so I had to download the etcher on my main pc. Thing is, when googled it, both of these websites popped up as official. I'm now confused as to which one is the real one. Can you guys please help? [link] [comments] |
Laptop keyboard stops working after suspend / lid close? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:41 AM PDT Hi everybody, I recently switched to Mint from Windows, no issues except this. My mouse works fine, logging in with on screen keyboard still doesn't fix it. This only happens sometimes however, idk why. I'm guessing its some power related issue. I have an Acer R5 471t in case that helps. [link] [comments] |
Need a laptop for school, taking some compsci classes. What should I look at? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:17 AM PDT Hey, so I'm going back to school and picked up some computer science courses... the last time I used a laptop regularly had windows 8 I think and I absolutely loathed it. Everything about it was just atrocious. However, I remember using my dad's desktop running Linux (Ubuntu) and the experience was incomparable to anything else. It was just... yes. Right up my alley. It was like a playground for ultra customization. Anyway, I'd like this concept in a laptop but I actually don't even know how I'd go about it. I really hate Windows. Mac isn't an option. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks, all. =) [link] [comments] |
Experiencing a very annoying 3-5 seconds delay before loading web media. Any idea how to solve? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:44 AM PDT Hello! I just switched to Linux (PopOS) and I'm experiencing a weird and very annoying 3-5 sec. delay when loading web media (websites, video playback, appshop load). It's not lag or a slow connection, literally nothing happens for 5 seconds, and only then the stuff starts loading. I'm on dual boot with W10, and the other OS doesn't have any issue. I tried changing my DNS, and the problem stays the same. Tried disabling Ipv6, same. Any idea how could I fix this? ------------------------------------------------- Edit: The problem gets better once a site is already loaded. Navigation only has minor delay. Drivers are installed correctly . Edit2: Dig results: ; <<>> DiG 9.16.8-Ubuntu <<>> a google.com ;; global options: +cmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Edit3: Traceroute has a couple of *** results. Edit 4: Firefox Network analysis showing huge delays in the document loading times: https://i.imgur.com/zz9SUw0.png [link] [comments] |
Changing Performance Mode In Linux Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:39 AM PDT Hi! I've recently started to use Linux over Windows and don't know yet how to do most things. At the moment, I'm running some code in my pc, and it is getting a bit hot. On Windows, by pressing f12, I could access the Command Center menu which allowed me to change between four modes, normal, performance, quiet, and cool (my pc is a HP ENVY 13-ag0000 x360 Convertible PC). How can I change modes in Linux? I'm using Ubuntu 20.04. I've already tried cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors but don't know the meaning of what I'm seeing for it returns: conservative ondemand userspace powersave performance schedutil Thanks in advance! Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:53 PM PDT That's it. I'm interested in trying something new and I'm looking for insights from ppl that used it and/or are familiar with it. So, what things should I know? Why'd you recommend CentOS to me? Why'd not recoomend CentOS to me? [link] [comments] |
What app to use for virtual machines? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:39 PM PDT I really dislike windows now and I don't see a reason why to continue using it. Linux it's faster on a hdd than windows on a ssd, also I can't boot windows without safe boot (it started to happen after an update). Linux it's just superior. Only problem is after effects, I tried looking at alternatives but they just can't do what after effects can (no effects like sapphire, bcc, universe, twitch, optical flares, saber, etc.) So I want to use a virtual machine for after effects (and maybe some games if they don't work on linux). Any recommendations of a virtual machine app? (I used gnome boxes but its slow) Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:17 PM PDT So I just set up Windows with Fedora (Dual boot), on separate drives, windows on a 500gb, and fedora on 128gb ssd (see image). Now my question is how do I set up the system, so that if I add a random file e.g. file.txt while using fedora to my desktop directory, that the next time I boot windows I also have that same file accessible there (preferably in the same directory)? (So basically the file system is shared between the os) Thx, a lot, because even though there are several resources online, I just can't make it work. [link] [comments] |

Manjaro always boots with Ethernet toggled off Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:07 PM PDT As the title states. On every cold boot or reboot Ethernet is always toggled off. It's not a huge problem as it takes just a second to toggle it on. My network config is a little unusual though. I'm using an Intel X520-DA2 10g card for direct connection to my NAS and the standard Ethernet port for everything else. I'm running a fresh install of Manjaro (about 1 week old) [link] [comments] |

Kernel 5.11.0-x always stuck with 640x480 cannot change anything Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:44 PM PDT With Linux mint 20.1 XFCE and Manjaro XFCE whenever I try any kernel 5.11.0-22,25 or 27 which are the only ones I tried, I only get 640x480, refresh rate at 20. Going to display settings I have no drop down available in any area of the screen and monitor is unknown. Nvidia settings is just a grey box. I have tried using HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, only one is ever plugged in at a time. Other is completely unplugged. when I try doing updates and upgrades with that view, it finishes and still same thing, even with a restart. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried two different monitors, same thing. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:22 AM PDT I've been playing around with the idea of moving from Windows to Linux. I installed Pop OS on an old laptop that Windows bricked before moving to a live USB on my primary computer to make sure I was going to be able to do my job with minimal issues. I'm to the point that I want to use Pop OS as my only OS on the computer. Is there a way to clone my Live USB instance from the flash drive to my primary hard drive (and nuking Windows)? I spent quite a bit of time getting this instance set up and I would like to keep all that work if possible. Additional information on System Laptop that I'm going to move this to is running 64 bit windows 10 pro with a 11th gen core i7 without a discrete graphics card. [link] [comments] |

Open link in new browser window. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:02 AM PDT Whenever I click on a link in my terminal and there is no browser running on this workspace, it goes to another workspace and opens the link in a new tab. I want it to open a new instance of firefox, on this workspace and open the link there. I am using Gnome 40. How can I archive this? [link] [comments] |
Refind not showing Pop_OS! efi shell, only Windows, recovery partitions, and systemd-boot Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:13 AM PDT Current specs: I have a SSD with Windows 10 on it and wanted to try dual booting with Pop_OS! on a spare HDD i had lying around. Installation was pretty easy for PopOS, but after i installed refind boot manager following the instructions from rodsbooks.com/refind/, I'm only able to see gummiboot (systemd-boot), windows, and some recovery partitions. I've use efibootmgr and it detects PopOS (same as it shows in the bios), I've changed the refind.conf to scan for legacy uefi instances just in case it didn't detect it, and I've tried using both rodsmith's repo and the standard repos to install refind, but no luck. Any ideas what I'm missing? Or am I stuck booting systemd-boot to get to PopOS? [link] [comments] |
