Just found out my SSD is actually an HDD after 7 years

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:57 PM PDT

I bought a pre-built pc from a local tech store back in 2014, and I was told it came with a 2TB HDD and a 500GB SSD. Today I had the door open on my case and actually took a close look at the tiny drive in my sata tray for the first time and realized it wasn't an SSD, but it's actually a little seagate laptop hard drive.

Just thought it was funny how the guy that built it's little lie he told to a 13 year old took so long to get found out. Worst part about it is I just spent the day moving my windows install to what I thought was my "SSD" that actually has slower read and write speeds than the drive it came from 🙃

5 year old died, what are my replacement options?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

My 5 year old GTX 1070 died and I need something to replace it, in the middle of a GPU shortage. What would be the best thing to do? Used or pay current prices on upgrade? My CPU does not have integrated graphics so.

cpu power cable doesn’t match psu

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT

so this is my first time building a pc, i don't have any other experience. so i've plugged in one end of my cpu power cable into the motherboard and it fits perfectly. but the other side of the cable doesn't match the power supply.

i have a 4+4 cpu cable and each of them have a lock on it. on the power supply, the slot for the cpu is only 8 pins and allows space for one lock only. what do i do?? am i messing something up?

    Thanks a lot r/buildapc

I've been stalking and made the occasional post on what to build in just under a year. I've finally put all the pieces together and have completed my gaming pc. Through multiple opinions, pointers and feedback I've been able to make a brand new pc for the first time since the AMD Athlon x2 days (instead of just having an intel cpu system and gaming only on console)

I managed to spend a little over $1200 converted on:
    AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    Inno3d RTX 3060ti
    Crucial Ballistix 2x8GB 3600mhz
    WD Blue 1TB Nvme SSD

Coupled with a Sata SSD & HDD I planned to put in my xbox to keep it going for a few extra years this is looking like honestly the best pc I could have asked for. I was out of work last year and was thinking how am I going to even scrape together a ryzen 3 3100 and gtx 1660 super combo.

There's no RGB unfortunately, only the manufacturer of the GPU's name lights up in my build and I think that's neat. As cool as rgb is I'm happy with saving a few bucks on getting other upgrades. Maybe down the line I'm gonna get rgb, I'm ALREADY looking at where to upgrade next because we all know that's the real fun part about pcs!

    Anyhow, thanks for the pointers!

Can you mount a dual graphic card setup with an RTX 3070 (or similar) and a GTX 1070 TI?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:22 AM PDT

    Title says it all.

I currently have a GTX 1070 TI and looking to upgrade, and I wonder if it's possible to make both cards work together instead of selling my 1070 TI, or if it's even worth it if it actually works?

I've never looked into a dual graphic card setup before so I'm a big newbie here, so forgive me if it's a stupid question.

Why does my computer keep freezing?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:36 AM PDT

    Hi.
My computer keeps freezing and requiring a hard reset. It always happens when I am watching YouTube, Netflix or Twitch, but never when playing a game. The video will first pause, then when I try to close the browser the computer will freeze. I have tried it across multiple browsers now and it still happens a few times a day. The CPU and GPU are not overheating (I have NZXT CAM open on my second screen so when it freezes I can check). I have also tried a fresh install of my graphics drivers. Any ideas or suggestions for what I could try?

    Specs:

ASUS - ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING AM4 Motherboard
    AMD - Ryzen 7 3700X Processor
    Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB NVMe PCIe M.2 2280
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 6GB OC GPU
    Vengeance Pro 16GB DDR4 3600
    EVGA 600W1
    Acer Nitro 144hz 1440p

    Thanks in advance.

Should I assemble parts for my pc as I get them or wait till everything comes?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:16 PM PDT

I have recently just started to get some parts for a new pc as I gotten tired of the slow performance of the old prebuilt. Im wondering if I should build it as I get the parts for this computer because of the stocking issue with the RTX 3080. Im mostly worried about the cpu and cpu coolers thermal paste rotting or drying up as I would really prefer to not apply it myself, or having the computer collect dust as my current one is caked in it and have never bothered to clean it because I would have to take it apart.

PC shuts down after 15-30 mins of use

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:06 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

After swapping out my PSU today, my pc now shuts down completely after 15-30 mins of regular use. It makes a kaput sound but the lights on the motherboard stay on and the power button doesn't work until the power switch of the PSU is switched off. I have tried reconnecting all the cables. I have also run Furmark on the system and the Userbenchmark software to try to increase the load and the system was fine during and immediately after both tests.

My specs are: Ryzen 5 3600x Asus prime b550 plus Rtx 2060 Fractal design focus g EVGA supernova 750 GT + A couple of drives and an air cooler.

I hoping that this is just a loose connection or a PSU error since the computer seems to run fine until it shuts off. If necessary I can post pictures tomorrow but any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, earsofdarkness

EDIT: During Furmark, GPU is at 98% drawing 150W and the fan on the PSU isn't spinning. Faulty PSU?

EDIT 2: Running Cinebench R23 for 4 mins was fine but PSU fan still didn't spin.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll sleep on it and update tomorrow.

    B550 or X570 (5900x White Build)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:27 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

So I'm building a pc and have everything ordered but I may be having second thoughts on going with a B550 board to pair with my 5900x and 3080. I went with the Rox Strix B550-A as it is white and will look great with my all white build.

Should I exchange it for a 570 board? Budget is not an issue here. I think the only feature I can think of that I would want from the 570 is the extra gen 4 nvme slot but I may be missing other advantages. Lastly, esthetics is important but I can't find a white 570 board other than the asus prime and I think that may be entry level?

    Your help appreciated!

    3060 / Ti

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:24 PM PDT

guys i currently have a ryzen 3 3200g and 16 gb ram. Im plannign to buy a card from 3000 series. I work with unreal engine quite alot so should i get a 3060 or a 3060 ti. 3060 has more VRAM but a 3060 ti is much faster (its better than a 2080 super) which also let me play games better. What do you think? Should i ask this on the unreal engine subreddit or is this the correct place

PC restarts itself after I try to install something or try to launch an app (origin, g hub etc)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:48 PM PDT

Hello, I have been using my new pc for about a month now. Now suddenly my PC started restarting itself when I try to install an exe. I can play games or browse through any application with no problem. But this keeps happening randomly. I formatted my windows and it didn't work at all. The error code on the event viewer is Kernel-Power 41. I tried every solution I can think of, i little help would be awesome. Thanks in advance. I formatted the pc about 7 times, removed the bios battery, and put it back in, I uninstalled every driver and tried again, etc. I installed Linux to reproduce the same error. Everything worked fine on Linux so it might be a software issue. I'm going crazy with this situation. This build was really expensive for me since I live in 2nd world country. Any help would be appreciated.

    GPU : Aorus Master 3070ti

I did an oopsie, I’d like some help please

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:35 AM PDT

So I built my entire pc, and turned it on just to realize I accidentally ordered the non-wifi version of my motherboard instead of the wifi one. I can't run an Ethernet cable at the moment, so should I replace my entire motherboard or buy a wifi card? How do the speeds compare? Motherboard is Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming.

    Wireless keyboard recommendations

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:45 AM PDT

Hi guys! I'm looking to buy a keyboard as a gift for my boyfriend, I don't really have a clue on where to start and I only know a couple of things in needs to be/have. It needs to be -

    1) Mechanical 2)Wireless 3)Cherry MX 4) RGB 5) Full size

The one he has just now I'm sure is a Logitech one. I don't have a budget for this really as long as it's a good one for gaming in particular.

    Any recommendations are welcome :)

    A GTX 1070 for €130 a good deal?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:28 AM PDT

It's a starting bid on a second hand site so i'll definitely get overbid by someone but if i manage to get is for €130 ($154) is that a good deal? It's a gigabyte version with 3 fans.

Gaming PC just turns off when playing games

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:23 PM PDT

Since Monday my gaming PC has been randomly turning off when playing games, almost as if i pulled the plug out. It will not turn back on until i completely unplug it from the socket. I have checked temps and everything appears to be OK, I have also not added/changed anything within the PC itself since putting in a new GPU in December, Would anyone have any ideas what might be failing.

    Specs;

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Corair 16Gb DDR4 Vengeance LPX 3200MHz

    Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite

Asus RTX 3060 Ti DUAL OC 8GB

    CoolerMaster MWE Bronze 750W

Everything is housed in a Corsair 465X RGB with 6x120mm Corsair LL series fans and a H100i RGB Pro XT.

It just turned off on me today while playing Path of Exile.

    Fan dilema

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Soooo.. I know that I can save money going to other fans or whatever and that cable management is going to be a PITA, That's fine but I think I'm going to go with 9 Corsair QL120's. It's cheaper to buy them in the 3 pack than individually. They come with the Lighting Node CORE.

My dilemma: the Lighting Node CORE only controls RGB. What to do about fan speed control? Do I get a splitter 4pin pwm thing like this to connect all the fans to 1 or 2 fan headers on the motherboard or like 2 Commander Pros to do the RGB and fan controller and toss/sell the Lighting Node CORES?

Without it being in the fan header the fans are only gonna go one speed right? Even if the temps fluctuate it will still be the one speed? Speed control will be with the bios/mobo utility if no commander pro? With commander pro is it controlled in icue? Thanks all for your input.

I finished my build a few months ago, and whenever there's thunderstorms in the forcast I shut down, click off the power supply and unplug it from the power supply. Could I be damaging it?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:08 PM PDT

I'm super paranoid because its the most expensive thing I own. Because of the way its set up, its much easier to access the back of the tower to unplug it rather than from the wall outlet. But I have no idea if I should be doing this or not.

Is this fairly priced for 2021?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:55 PM PDT

While gaming, is the center of your monitor positioned at 90 degree to your line of sight, above or below (given that you keep your head straight)?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:42 PM PDT

Increased height of my monitor by 4 inches and realized, gaming is more immersive if center of monitor is closer in alignment to my line of sight. That way I don't have to tilt my head or eyes downwards. I think it happens because it takes away any stress of physical exertion, hence makes you feel more relaxed.

Would like to know if other gamers feel the same.
