Finally a distro that works flawlessly on my laptop: MX Linux Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:53 PM PDT A bit of a background: I got an Ideapad 100s 11by back in 2015 for only 170$ for uni. Since i already had a "powerful" desktop i needed a cheap, lightweight laptop for traveling and as a uni companion. (I study electrical engineering btw) The laptop has an Intel Atom Z3735f only 2gb of DDR3 non upgradable ram and the battery could last for hours the only problem: Windows 10. The first builds where alright : Build 1607 worked great I also blocked updates so my storage wont get wasted (64GB). Then Win.10 started the forced updates and made the laptop slow to a crawl. I tried installing Linux but no luck: Every distro lagged the laptop got so hot and the battery couldn't last one hour up until recently. I had to create a custom Windows 10 pro with disable services in order to get it working. Finally MX Linux now works flawlessly: The laptop is blazing fast the ram and CPU usage is so low even for a 64bit OS. The only thing i had trouble was managing software: The distro had so much "advanced" programs i dont have any use for and also it doesn't have a proper app store. Yeah it has a basic package manager with most popular apps but you cant uninstall programms within it. You'll have to search the programs "command" and then remove it via terminal, which it isn't thst much of a noob friendly unfortunately. Anyways tho I'm VERY pleased non of the ubuntu linux distros worked without issues so far. [link] [comments] |
What should I watch out for if I need to dual boot long term? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:26 AM PDT TL;DR: I want to migrate to Linux but have one piece of professional software tying me to windows - what are some ways to setup dual booting for this long-term? I recently downloaded Pop! os after trying a few distros and am absolutely loving it - I am a huge fan of the Gnome UI and it feels great to know my OS isn't tracking me. I work as a musician, and I've been able to port most of my professional work over the past few days (big thanks to Unfa on YT) the exception being my scorewriter, Dorico, which I only need on certain projects, but when I do I use it quite heavily. Dorico seems to not want to install at all under Wine, and the DRM dongle I have to use for it doesn't get recognized on VM's. I know there are some FOSS alternatives which are good, but for my purposes are not quite fast enough (maybe if I learn Lilypond one day I'll be able to migrate over fully) I'm thinking that as this piece of software remains necessary for my work - I'll migrate over to Linux and keep a tiny partition for Windows just to run Dorico and some other proprietary audio software that I still use. I've read online that Dual Booting isn't a good solution long term though - and I'm not sure I understand exactly why. What are the things I should watch out for if I'm creating this setup long-term? Is it worthwhile to get a separate drive just to run Windows? [link] [comments] |
What's the best way to manually partition and encrypt an installation? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:46 AM PDT I just bought a 1TB NVME drive and I want to install a fully encrypted Manjaro on it. The only thing is I don't want to use all of the drive for the OS and would rather keep at least half available and unencrypted for data that needs to be shared between Manjaro and Windows 10 that is on another drive. Nothing important will be on the unencrypted part of the drive so I understand that whatever on there will be fully accessible. Is there a good way to do this by manually installing? I did a bit of research and it looks like I need: Does this look correct? I have 16GB RAM installed and do hibernate a decent amount. can I encrypt all partitions sans Which filesystem type should I use? ext4? I usually just wipe the full drive when installing but want to avoid that if possible. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:48 AM PDT I have a 500gb SSD and 1tb HDD. SSD: Windows(preinstalled), EFI boot(preinstalled), root directory(30gb), swap(20gb) HDD: EFI Bootloader GRUB(1gb), home directory(150gb), rest common media storage for both os I will be formatting all linux partitions with ext4 except GRUB partition which i will format as EFI using gparted in the live bootable media version of linux mint. I want to install windows and root and swap directory on the ssd for speed and install the rest on hdd. This way when windows updates, only root partition will be affected. both GRUB and my data will be safe on the hdd so i can just reinstall linux mint. Can there be any problems with this setup? how would you set up in my case? [link] [comments] |

How do I make sure my system is using the right adapter for 3D? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:50 AM PDT I am on one of those newer laptops with both integrated graphics and dedicated 3D accellerator. In my case it's a i7-8750H and a GTX1050. I decided to install some games to try graphics. They work, but I'm not sure what it is using. How can I find out? The graphical enviroment itsself is running on the integrated graphics and the system can actually see both. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:35 AM PDT I just downloaded the Wine 6.0 package I opened the readme file I didn't understand anything in the steps it says run: ./configure make then either install wine: make install or run wine directly from the build directory I don't know what to do. also I have no idea about using the terminal [link] [comments] |
Problem with starting and installing Tails Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:15 AM PDT Hello everyone, I've been looking for a Linux operating system to use with USB (so in live mode) for a few months. I have tried with various Linux distributions but none have managed to start. Now I'm trying with Tails but after booting I get a gray screen with a few lines of code (of which I don't understand anything). Would anyone be able to guide me to solve this problem? I state that I am using Os, I tried to reset the USB and redid the procedure, I tried to change various USBs and to re-download the Tails distribution. Additional information: to put Tails on the USB I used Etcher and followed the instructions on the official site. Thank you in advance [link] [comments] |

Networking advice: personal + work + commercial VPNs and selective split-tunneling Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:40 PM PDT Hey everyone, Maybe not a very noob-y question, but I'm certainly a noob. The connection with Linux is a bit slim (my Pi and laptop run Linux) but I think it's still relevant to this community. I use two VPNs: ProtonVPN for my personal use and PulseSecure to connect to my work network. I'm planning to set up a mini-homelab with a NAS and maybe some services I'd like to access from external networks too, which would require me to use a reverse proxy and expose some ports (kinda unsafe as a noob, from what I've learnt) or set up a VPN into my home network (seems to be safer). (Additionally, I might want to self-host a static personal website that I want exposed to the Internet, but let's forget about that for now.) I want certain apps to only connect to the internet via my work VPN (killswitch otherwise), all other programs/services to connect to the internet through ProtonVPN (killswitch otherwise), and also be able to remote into my network from outside through a VPN. I have a Pi 4 (8 GB) that I'll be using as a mini-homelab and a couple of old (ISP-provided) routers that I don't think support OpenWRT. The only other devices on my LAN would be my phone and my laptop. What would be the best way to set up the configuration I described above, if it's even possible? Should it be configured in the router or on my client devices (Pi, laptop, phone)? I'm very new to networking, so if anyone could suggest comprehensive resources that explain it from first principles (shoutout to /r/ef1p), I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks for reading this far, and I'm looking forward to your help! I'm typing this in bed though, so I probably won't respond to comments until tomorrow/later. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:52 AM PDT I'm thinking of switching over to Linux but I'm a fairly regular gamer. Assassins Creed, MMORPGs, Gears of War and others. I know it varies but in general what kind of fps loss am I looking at gaming in a virtualbox with Win10? Specs: Intel i7, 16g ram, 2070 max-q laptop. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Grub menu still showing deleted kernel Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:34 AM PDT A week ago I faced the issue of not being able to delete an unsupported kernel via GUI tools. I followed pacman -Rc linux511-rt now today I realized that the grub menu still shows the 511-rt kernel. How do i remove it from grub? Outputs: Checking /boot/ What should I do next? Thank you :) [link] [comments] |
Almost Did Something Similar to rm -rf / Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:48 AM PDT I was just backing up my files using rsync, this was the first backup so I wasn't using a script just yet, and I was cycling between the folders in my home folder. Update 1: A few theme files from /usr/share/theme were deleted, causing the system's theme to change. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:18 AM PDT I'm new to learning about servers and I just signed up for an account on Linode. I want to create a basic server which will host a simple webpage (not much traffic) and back up some files to it. It's mostly for learning how to run a Linux server. I have several choices of operation systems and I know CentOS 8 is going away and that Rocky Linux is going to be a replacement. Would it be a better option to choose Ubuntu server or Rocky Linux to learn on? I already use Fedora on my laptop. Any suggestions for a beginner? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:20 AM PDT I installed bspwm in a VM just to try it. Yes sxhkd is installed. I used the example configs for bspwm and sxhkd from the bspwm package, and I modified the permissions of bspwmrc to 777 so it should be executable. My xinitrc just has "exec bspwm". When I type startx it starts up into a black screen. None of the keybindings work and I can't get it to do anything. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Help with AutoCAD and ArchiCAD Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:17 AM PDT I recently bought a secondary SSD to try POP_OS on my main rig which runs Windows 10 and I'm in love with POP OS, I really want to fully migrate to linux (at least on my desktop, because I've been enjoying lately W11 on my laptop). The problem is, I'm an architectural engineering student and I NEED some specific programs that I will also use later in my professional life. Those programs are, at the bare minimum, AutoCAD and ArchiCAD, but mainly ArchiCAD. I installed WINE but on WINE's website it says that both programs seem to not be working. Is there a way to make them work? Should I first try to install them nonetheless? Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
ArchISO 2021.08.01 can't connect to wifi with iwctl or wpa_supplicant using RTL8191SU Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:10 AM PDT ip link shows a wlan0 interface and I already set it to up Seems like a driver issue to me I guess, but who knows. So now what? I have no other way of connecting this machine to the internet. Is there some way I could get a driver for this chipset in without having an internet connection? Completely lost here. Can't find my chipset on the wiki either. [link] [comments] |
