Help improving/cleaning up old slow PC

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:14 PM PDT

My PC is over 10 years old, and kind of slow. I'm not on the newest Windows, might be 7. (I know I need to get a new computer, but I have a lot of stuff on this one and want to help it for now, until I get everything onto my external HD and find a new one.)

I haven't been able to Disk Defragment for a couple of years as it says this when I try...
Disk Defragmenter was scheduled using another program
Disk Defragmenter is currently using customized settings created by another program. Before you can modify the schedule, you must remove the customized settings.
When I click Remove Settings - It just closes the popup.

I read to try uninstalling CC Cleaner as it could be the problem. I tried more than once yesterday from Add/Remove Programs.
And it only did about 10% then stop progressing. I even left it all night and it was still the same this morning.

Also, I read about doing "chkdsk" on Command Prompt.
It said: Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

I'm not very Tech savvy, but would appreciate any simple help that might make my computer do these things so it won't be as slow or any other advice. Thanks!!!

    Windows installer doesn't start

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:04 AM PDT

So I found an old computer and tried to turn it on. Everything seems to be working just fine, but it had an unofficial Windows 7 installation, so I tried to fresh install windows 10. But when I restarted it, the installer just shows a black screen and nothing happens, even after a long time. The same happens if I try to install windows 7 again.

Somehow it starts normally when I try to live boot any Linux distro, and could even install one on the hard drive without any problem.

Does anyone know what might be happening? I wanted to give it to my mom, and she doesn't want Linux on it, so not an option.

HOPELESS: Ubuntu 20.04 Headphone frequently plugging-unplugging

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:37 AM PDT

I have dual boot machine Ubuntu 20.04, with Linux 5.4.0-80-generic and Windows 10.

For the past 2-3 days my earphone has stopped working on Ubuntu 20.04. I've noticed that it sometimes detected and then gets unplugged automatically.

What I think could have caused the issue:

    1. I probably remember installing some latest updates from Ubuntu, I suspect it might be have caused it. But I've tried to follow different possible solutions from the internet like installing/reinstalling/updating/tweaking pulse audio, alsa, pavucontrol etc. and nothing seems to work. On pavucontrol, I noticed that my earphone is shown as unplugged when I select it manually, it starts working but only for a while and then sound is switched to machine's speaker.

    2. Further since I have dual boot, I tested my earphone on Windows and it works perfectly. There does not seems to be any issue in the sound. This makes me feel that the issue could be software related.

    3. I also suspect that this issue could be because of some hardware issue as due to bad earthing at my place, my laptop charger gives shock when I touch it with bare hands while my feet touching the ground. Can laptop charger damage my laptop's hardware?

If it's not software related issue in Ubuntu, then I suspect it should be hardware related and most probably some of the hardware connections pins at my headphone jack would have damaged and unfortunately damaged connection pins are used by Ubuntu while some non-damaged connection pins are used by Windows.

I'm completely hopeless and frustrated as few days back I got my screen replaced which was damaged (light dim) on its own while working normally, most probably due to high voltage my charger offers with shock as the screen cable was damaged and screen pin was burnt, costed me 1/5th amount of my 5 years old machine. I just hope that this time there's no hardware issue! I am feeling so bad about my machine and myself.

Could someone please help me and enlighten what to do?

Thank you so much for your time.

I have an Asus TUF FX504GE, and I noticed that the screen has a slight yellow tint. I tried all the settings, haven't turned on the Night Light setting. Also asked Asus, they're clueless as well, asked me to update my drivers even though they are up-to-date. Please Help...

Laptop gave me this screen at 11:00 PM last night after hitting shut down, left it for a bit (maybe 45 minutes) but eventually just closed the lid and let it sleep. I opened my laptop this morning to see this, and have let it sit for about an hour. Is this normal? Should I just wait it out?

    Windows 10 Computer Taskbar Unclickable

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 07:23 PM PDT

I have a windows 10 computer. I have restarted multiple times but it won't let me click anything on the taskbar. No file folder, no start menu, no wifi. I can't do anything on this computer because I can't connect to the internet. Anybody know a workaround for this? I have been trying for about an hour. I have went through the Task Manager and restarted "Windows Explorer." This also did not fix the issue.

    Any help I'd appreciated, thanks.

So 3 months ago I clicked a dodgy link and windows security detected 3 trojans that I quickly got rid of. I changed all passwords, and ran some antivirus and nothing came up. 3 months later, malwarebytes has just detected this. This makes me think there's still more lingering, am I fucked?

Stuck on motherboard screen after adding another hdd

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:47 AM PDT

yup, stuck on motherboard screen. I press f12 key or del key, nothing happens, its just stuck there without loading circle and just prompts to press this key for bios stuff. But if I remove my new hdd, everything works fine. I dont have any spare data cables and the 1Tb hdd was fresh outta the box.

    Something’s not right.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:43 PM PDT

So a couple days ago everything was totally fine and recently i noticed that my second drive (not the one with system) is like it's not working, by that i mean i can't open it and you can't see the gigabytes and how much space you have left. So i restarted my pc thinking it's a bug, my pc was starting very long ( like 3 minutes, normally its like 10 secs) and when it finally opened everything was laggy (now its not that bad) and i can't open things like windows explorer or folders or my bin, but when i do my screen goes white like it was not responding and my desktop kind of restarts? I can use certain applications or windows settings or google chrome and watch youtube and do stuff. I guess something's off with the drive but why is system stuff lagging when the second drive was only for games and my stuff? It's hard to explain and i don't know what to do.
