Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Is cooler master trusted brand?? For psu

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:33 AM PDT

    I just ordered a new M.2 SSD

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:40 AM PDT

Title. I am currently using a SATA SSD and I want to keep it as well as install the new M.2, how would I go about swapping the OS to the M.2 one to have as a boot drive? And as far as moving files, is that as easy as just dragging them over to the other disk?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I meant that the M.2 is an NVMe SSD (i'm new to this), also the NVMe is the Silicon Power A80, a cheap brand i did some research on and found that is apparently pretty good for the price.

    Cpu cooler for 5800x

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:17 AM PDT

I'm building a pc with a ryzen 7 5800x in it, and i heard the 5800x can run quite hot so i have to decide what cooler to buy. I looked on the amd website for coolers that fit the performance criteria. But which of the following coolers would you recommend: (I'm currently not planning on overclocking and the case will be the lancool 215)

    Arctic liquid freezer 2 280mm
    Fractal design celsius+ S28 dynamic
    Cooler master ml240r
Be quiet dark rock pro 4

Which one of these is the best choice or should i go for an aio with 360mm fans?

Is RTX 3060 worth at $676

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:34 PM PDT

Stumbled into a newegg shuffle win. Is MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 12GB worth pulling the trigger now. Or keep holding out for general price drop for higher spec cards?

I have no use for the combo ram, so I'm assuming I'll likely sell it at a loss. Maybe I get $75-100 back from that sale.

There is no need for a gaming computer to run High Performance / Ultimate Power Plans in Windows.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:55 AM PDT

Figured this post needed to happen as it's often uninformed advice given to people as to "how to fix X problem" or "MAX FPS SETTINGS." It's rampant on YouTube and Reddit... and there's a reason you'll never see respected sites/videos suggesting to do this.

So what is High Performance / Ultimate Power Plan?

    • High Performance / Ultimate Power Plan is like buying a brand new car and slapping a brick on the gas pedal while it's in your drive way. Computer wise performance mode forces your CPU to run at maximum P-state at all times, while ultimate power plan runs at both maximum P-states and C-states. These settings are both created for workstations and servers that are meant to be running X task consistently and forever. They're not made for gaming computers, you're just wasting energy and creating unnecessary heat.

What do I use? Balanced mode, the one used straight on first boot. So what is it?

    • Balanced mode lets your CPU downclock when there is no demand for voltage from your workload. As an example my cpu is currently running between hovering .764v as I write this. (with Chrome, Discord, vmware, Steam, Slack and HWinfo64 open). This is how the CPU should operate as it's generating less overall heat, because I don't need it to be right now therefore the computer is not demanding it.

    • When gaming it takes microseconds, a completely unnoticeable amount of time, for a computer to ramp up a CPU. When gaming this happens when you boot, and will stay there as needed. It will not create micro-stutter, and you will not gain FPS, within error, from this in benchmarks

But how do I get rid of micro-stutter?

    • The micro-stutter you're getting is not going to be a direct result of balanced power plan. A host of possibilities like exiting/entering a vertical sync range, it could be a hardware issue, it could be the game has bad code, it could be your firewall, could be you're running the game DVR or other intrusive programs, your cooler may not be sufficient, you may need to reinstall your drivers, I've seen stories of unused USB devices causing stuttering like mice, and many other things.

I guess the point is problem solving on PCs isn't easy, it's frustrating. As a piece of advice it's good to stay calm, rationalize what could be your issues, find a good place to ask about them, and come informed. When attempting to fix issues take it one at a time and don't "throw money at it" unless it's your last logical option.

And if you don't believe me, take it from someone at AMD.

    I need help.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:47 PM PDT

    Hello there, (F17 here)

Im planning on building my first ever gaming pc but before i buy all the parts and build the machine i wanted to ask some people about advice. If somebody would check my build if there are any problems that would be great.

ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 ROG STRIX GAMING OC V2

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI), socket AM4 moederbord

    Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB Hdd

Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 1 TB SSD

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 3,7 GHz (4,6 GHz Turbo Boost) socket AM4 processor

    NZXT Kraken X73 RGB AIO

Corsair 16 GB DDR4-3600 Kit Ram

Corsair 4000D AIRFLOW Tempered Glass tower-

    Corsair HX750, 750 Watt voeding

Corsair LL120 RGB LED PWM fan - 3 Fan Pack case fan

I put my parts in pcpartpicker and it said it has these problems.

    • Warning! Some AMD B550 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vermeer CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.
    • Note:Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port, but the Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard does not have sufficient USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Gen 1 headers. The case USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port will not be usable.
    • Note:Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

i dont know what this all means. can somebody please explain it in a easier way that makes more sense for a pc newbie.

Thank you guys very much, i hope to get some advice soon!

    :)

Which GPU producer has the best warranty service?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:59 AM PDT

My Inno3D 2070 ((which was only used for gaming in a good/clean airflow environment) recently broke down after just 1.5y and apparently couldn't be fixed. While according to the internet I should be having 2-3y of warranty by Inno3D, I wasn't able to find any info on what services the warranty actually includes. The reseller I bought it from in Germany refunded me 80% of the original buying price, which ofc nowadays is merely enough to buy half a decent GPU...

So before I buy a new GPU, I wanted to ask around for some recommendations on which GPU brands actually give the best (international) warranty. Which producer do you think is most likely to either repair or replace a broken card within the first 2-3y after buying?

Can my PC run 1440p on 144hz?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:17 AM PDT

    Hello, fellow redditors

I am deciding wether to get a QHD monitor or a fullHD since I do not know if all of my games will run smoothly on 1440p.

    My current specs are:

    I5 10400F - RTX 3060 - 16GB ram

It can handle most games on max settings currently

Games I mostly play are The Witcher 3 (heavily modded), gtaV and (forgive me) fortnite. I also play some other games but they arent a problem.

If anyone has similar specs and plays some of the same games i would like to know if you have had any problems running them on (preferably) max settings.

Thanks for the award, kind stranger

Is it time to bite the bullet and get a GPU for 2x MSRP?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT

Like everyone else, I've been trying to get a new GPU since around October. I've tried to buy cards only to get out of stock, or have it my cart but not checkout, for coming up on a year now. My current GPU (R9 290x) is having problems running modern games above 30fps, even at the lowest possible settings. I'm just tired of waiting for things to get better and stock still being impossible.

With all of that in mind, prices dropped a bit recently but then bounced back up, and aside from a crypto crash it looks unlikely to drop again any time soon. So, is it worth biting the bullet and getting a GPU for 2x MSRP as it seems that things aren't getting better any time soon?

    PC components review

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:25 PM PDT

I'm going to be doing some light gaming, playing games like Warzone and Modern Warfare. I'll also be coding a lot. My pc looks like this: Motherboard: ASRock B550M-HDV RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb at 3000Mhz CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 (Maybe super) PSU: Thermaltake smart 700w white Case: coolermaster q300l white

Edit: Would getting the 3400g be a viable option until GPU prices come down from triple MSRP?

    Selecting GPU

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:14 PM PDT

Going to be pairing with 3600 or IWCS (In Worst Case Scenario) with 5600x but that would be extra 200€ or more.

    I have 4 options: 1080ti PNY 440€ (blower); 1080ti Inno3d 470€ (triple fan); rtx3060 asus dual 590€; rtx3060ti gigabyte 680€.

Additional option would be rtx3060 PNY dual for 565€ but i think if i will chelc the store tommorow it will be sold.

Changed out PC Parts and PC runs extremely hot now.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:57 PM PDT

I upgraded my rig from a i5-9600k and 1080 to i9-9900k and a 1080ti, but the PC runs significantly hotter than before and overheats from time to time running at like 90 degrees for Apex when it use to run at like 70.

I am using a 400D Obsidian case so I don't believe the issue is airflow and I also used compressed air to clean out the whole PC, but it just runs very hot whenever it's under any sort of load and I can't find the reason why.

Can you have quick look at this build and see if there's anything you would change

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:50 PM PDT

Hi folks have been saving up for a few months now and am planning on spending an absolutely ridiculous amount of money on a really good PC, it will be my second build and just wanted to check if the parts look good. Particularly with the motherboard which is probably the part I know least about, my understanding is unless you're using multiple GPUs or certain storage configurations you dont need to spend loads of money on one?

Case:GameMax F15M Mesh ARGB Gaming Case

    CPU:AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8GHz 8 Core CPU - 4.7GHz Turbo

    Motherboard:Gigabyte B550 AORUS Elite AX V2 Motherboard

Graphics Card - Gigabyte Radeon RX 6800 XT GAMING OC 16GB GDDR6

    Memory:32GB DDR4 3200MHz Memory (2x16GB)

    Primary Storage Drive:1TB WD Blue SN550 NVME M.2 SSD (2400MB/R, 1950MB/W)

Secondary Storage Drive:4TB Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" Hard Drive

    CPU Cooling:Basic AMD CPU Cooler

    PSU:Contour 850W Modular ATX 87+ Power Supply GPX850S

    Thanks for any help!!!

Tried to upgrade GPU, Windows now acting weird (RTX 3080)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:37 PM PDT

Hey! I've recently upgraded my GPU to an RTX 3080 which is wonderful, ray tracing and all that is super cool but for some reason despite the GPU working correctly in terms of rendering games and such I've had some very weird behaviour from Windows since the upgrade:

    1. Windows occcasionally now takes easily an extra 20-30 seconds to boot, sitting at a black screen right after the initial Windows loading screen but before the login screen.
    2. If the above problem occurred, then once I've loaded in my background will go black and the taskbar will flash on and off for about 20 seconds before everything loading in fully.

It's strange as the issue isn't easily repeatable. I thought I had resolved it by clean uninstalling my old GTX1080ti drivers and reinstalling the RTX 3080 firmware, I thought I had resolved it by setting my motherboard to automatically use PCIE 3rd gen instead of 4th but then the issues started occuring again. Is there something I missed in the upgrade process? At the same time as upgrading the GPU I also bought an 800W PSU to power it, could it be a power issue?

    Thanks

Watercooling loop, Corsair pump system shut down randomly?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:42 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just finished my Corsair loop. I booted all the way to Windows and once it loaded all up I clicked Start and the RAM and CPU LED turned red. All the lights turned off and the computer shut down. When I try to boot back up the pump is off and none of the Corsair stuff works. My Asus aura mobo lights are red and I am able to post still. I'm really not sure what's going on. (Unfortunately no indicators for hardware failures)

    Any help would be appreciated

    Pic of PC- https://ibb.co/f2vthS1

UPDATE: Pump started running but all the LED's for Corsair are still off... Makes no sense

UPDATE: Computer boots into safe mode fine, will sit here all day.

UPDATE: Tried to rebuild MBR inside command prompt. No go.

Hello fellow Redditors I'm planning on getting this PC very soon (should be in the next couple days depending on your advice) and I'd like your opinion on the components. Is the motherboard, PSU etc. up to par with the GPU and CPU? Is the SSD good? Are there any other observations/concerns that you may have? I'd just like for my doubts (as a result of not knowing much about PC's and my skeptical nature) to be cleared up before buying as this will be my first gaming PC and I want to get one that will serve me well for a long time. Thank you for any help!

1050Ti saying to connect PCI-e cables, but I already did!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:18 PM PDT

My old GeForce 760 bit the dust recently, and my friend passed along a 1050Ti card that appears to be a small upgrade. When I connect the card and boot up the computer, it says to connect the PCI-e cables.

From what I've read, some cards don't require power from the power supply and pull it through the motherboard. This card clearly wants to have the 6-pin cable connected, but even when I do so, it still asks to plug them in. I tried using the same cables that worked with my other cord, the one that is 6+2, and even another PCI-e cable that plugs into my Corsair TX750M power supply, but nothing makes the message leave.

It's possible there's an issue with the card itself, but it was tested before and it clearly works in some capacity since the computer recognizes it's there and needs power.

How do I give power to card that already has the power cable connected? I'm a little lost here, but PCPartPicker claims my existing equipment has no compatibility issues and I wanna play some games!
