Is worth maxing out RAM on my laptop?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:53 PM PDT

    Hello all!

I am wondering if there will be any benefit in maxing out RAM alongside the switching to SSD. I'll be switching to SSD and but the reason I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM is because I need to running a lot of browser programs and different applications for work. Should I max out RAM to 32 GB or just do the swap and save up for a new laptop replacement in a 3 years?

    Specs:

    HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cc0xx

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2712 Mhz

    Intel(R) HD Graphics 620

    Hard Drive: 1TB TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100

    RAM: 8 GB Micron @ 2400 + 4 GB Samsun @ 2400

Which one of these do you suggest?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 02:16 AM PDT

    • Purpose: Music Production and Video Editing:

    1- HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1017nj:

    Reyzon 7 4800 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD GTX 1650Ti 4GB

    $1150

    2- Asus TUF Gaming:

    i7-10870H 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD GTX 1650 4GB

    $1212

    3- MSI GF63:

    i7-9750 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD GTX 1650 4GB

    $1270

I really dont like the look of any of these laptops specially HP, I wanted something thinner, lighter and with a better look, but I know that if there is any they wouldn't have these strong preferences with the same price range, idk about the battery life though!

The prices are different than online because here in my country there is plus fees like taxes, shipping etc

    Help!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:45 AM PDT

Hey guys, ive got a budget of $900 aud for a laptop. I need a laptop that has decent performance on games such as minecraft and csgo but also lasts long when it comes to battery life. Can anyone help?

Which one will be best to buy?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:22 AM PDT

I chose these 3, because their price to spec ratio comes under my budget

I need a general purpose laptop for home use for browsing movie watching zoom meeting etc. I like 2 in 1s but most of them get out of the price range, if looking for good specs.

Please help in deciding the best choice. If you have any better alternatives, please provide them also. Please don't advise on buying gaming laptops as I don't like their aesthetics and need a simple machine.

Should I buy something powerful for that right now, or save money on something cheaper and buy a more powerful laptop after 2 years?

In the USA looking for a laptop that can handle live-streaming and gaming at the same time

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 01:10 AM PDT

    Gaming/Streaming Laptop suggestion - Budget: about 1000$ Country: U.S.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      About $1000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

The most important thing in my eyes is how it performs, so I don't really care how it looks. As long as it performs well I'm happy with it

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming (steam) and streaming (OBS)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Some games I would like to play on it include guilty gear, apex legends, genshin impact, and league of legends. I'm not really gonna be running any demanding games so it doesn't have to be a really powerful gaming computer, just sort of entry level/mid range. And im using to gaming on a console so I'm perfectly fine with like 30 or 60 FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Maybe 3 3.0 or better usb type a and an hdmi port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have a 2015 MacBook Air that I use for school and work and it's great. But I need a computer that I can game and stream on because that computer can't handle that. Overall on this new computer am looking for one that is good at both gaming and streaming. I am willing to manually upgrade the ram so it can be better for streaming. And at least 256 gbs of storage is enough for me.

    2 in 1 laptop under 3K USD (U.S. Market)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Under 3K, basically anything goes. I prefer cheaper.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, but there probably won't be any (explained at the end)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
It has to be a 2 in 1 with stylus support > Performance > Battery life > Build Quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I prefer larger screens but don't really mind anything
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd like to have an 8 core laptop (16 threads) to be able to run VMs well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
2 in 1, Touchscreen, Stylus Compatible
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like to have thunderbolt. I know that means I'm limiting myself to i7 10th and 11th gen because older gens don't have 8 cores.
I'm not sure if this would even exist since I'm asking for an 8 core 16 thread 2 in 1 and as far as I can tell those CPUs are reserved for gaming laptops and 2 in 1s definitely don't fit in that market, but I may be wrong. ( I hope I'm wrong)

    CS major/light gaming laptop recommendation?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:17 PM PDT

Can you guys recommend me a good laptop for a CS major? (this question is probably a dime a dozen)

Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $2000ish USD

Are you open to refurbs/used? Preferably new

How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? build quality = battery life > performance > form. The thinner the better but my criteria might limit that.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not sure what screen size, actually. Preferably something easy to carry around but also reasonable for programming. 14-15"?

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly programming/schoolwork. I'd prefer an NVIDIA GPU bc I might do ML, but I can just use my rig/university labs/online services to train it faster anyways (Might do gaming/gamedev on the side as a hobby too, but I'm bringing my rig with me to college so probably won't need GPU power on the go)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? probably just light gaming, I can wreck my GPU at home. stuff like Duck Game. if possible, stable frames on Risk of Rain 2 maybe? though that might be pushing it. at the very least don't crash on Minecraft/Roblox so I can procrastinate during class, lol

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Bright, sharp screen, good keyboard for programming, webcam (don't care too much about quality as long as it's usable), 16gb preferred, 500gb+ SSD (preferably 1TB)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm heading to college for CS. I'm probably bringing my rig to college so I'll probably do GPU heavy stuff there, though if it could work on my laptop (w/o sacrificing battery life) that would be neat too. I was eyeing the Zephyrus G14 a year ago, but I don't know if that's still a good choice, especially w/o a webcam because of university quarantine protocols. I've heard the XPS 15 was a good option but I'd like to hear other suggestions before dropping that much $$$

How much performance difference I would notice between 6 core and 8 core Laptop?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:23 PM PDT

So I'm buying a laptop primary for Programming

I saw two laptops under my budget range.

    Specifications of

    Laptop 1 :-

    1. RYZEN 5 5500u (6 cores/ 12 threads) ryzen 5 5500u
    2. 8gb Ram
    3. 512gb ssd (Samsung)

    Laptop 2 :-

    1. Ryzen 7 4700u (8 cores/ 8 threads) ryzen 7 4700u
    2. 8gb ram
    3. 512gb ssd (Samsung)

The Laptop 1 Is quite cheaper than laptop 2

Purposes I would use my laptop for:-

    1. Programming (main purpose)
    2. Light Gaming (Valorant, LoL)
    3. Light Photo/Video editing (Photoshop/Premier Pro)
    4. Movies and all

So what would be best option for me to go for?

And how much performance difference I would notice between 6core/12threads and 8core/8threads?

( I compared both processors online cpu-monkey and the results said that ryzen 5 5500u is quite better than ryzen 7 4700u)

( I liked the build quality of LAPTOP 1 as it's Metal Body while LAPTOP 2 is plastic type body)

Gaming/Music production Laptop suggestion - Budget: under 1000$ Country: U.S.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:22 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Under $1000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form doesn't matter as much to me. Performance is the most important thing, and battery life is only mildly important. I prefer something simple looking over a typical "gaming" design, but honestly, looks are not as valued as the performance in my eyes.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As I am looking for a cheaper, high-performance laptop, the weight and thinness isn't a huge point of contention.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming (steam) and music production through FL Studio
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I like first-person shooters - Overwatch, Call of duty, Rainbow 6 siege and also sports games such as Madden, NBA 2k, Rocket League, etc. Would be my first time gaming on a computer instead of a console, so I do not know the exact settings, but I would hope to play on medium-high performance/graphics settings. I am not a graphics snob or anything, I am ok settling a little bit to stay on budget, but performance is still my most important aspect. Lots of storage is also really important to me.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am a college student and currently have a MacBook air that is used for everything in my life. It is obviously not designed to really handle gaming at any capacity or music production, but I absolutely love it for school work. I am going to be keeping that for now, transitioning all gaming, music production, etc. onto this new laptop. The reason I am going for a laptop over a PC is just for convenience purposes back and forth from school and home over the next 3 years. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

US Looking for Productivity Laptop up to $1,500

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:06 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Anything up to $1,500 although cheaper would be sweet (okay if it's a little bit over too); purchasing in the US.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A traditional laptop (ultra book?) would be preferred over a 2-in-1; hopefully thin and light. Preferably a good build quality since I travel a lot. Performance shouldn't matter as much for me since I don't plan on gaming/editing videos; but I would need lots of Excel and lots of browser tabs. Battery life hopefully not abysmal but doesn't need to be excellent.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very. I need it to be as thin and as light as possible.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

~13" would be great. Anything bigger I find too inconvenient to carry around.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No. But I do need lots of Excel and browser tabs and messaging apps. Lots.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A. Not gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really, but it does need to have a keyboard/trackpad so not the Microsoft Surface thing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Needs to run Windows 10/11; cannot use macOS because of some programs I need. Also, AMD vs Intel matters much? I heard AMD is supposed to be better bang for the buck and better battery life (which I value more over performance).

    Gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:53 PM PDT

Ight so I dont wanna do any like heavy gaming but would like something that runs things like minecraft, fnaf, Sims, animal jam etc (also movies or anime/youtube) but also have a price range of $500-$600. I want something that's fast. I've heard things like i3 8gb ones are good but I always find a review that deters me from the ones I've looked at. Some candidates I've looked at include: . Acer Aspire A515-54-56ZL 15.6" Laptop with Intel® i5-10210U, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, up to 4.2GHz

is this a good laptop for light gaming and coding?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:53 PM PDT

https://store.acer.com/en-us/aspire-7-laptop-a715-75g-544v#additional like the title says, i'm looking for a computer that will be good for very light gaming (the games i play aren't super intensive graphically) and for coding as i'm a compsci major. i'm also looking to do some light editing on after effects, though this is not a priority. my sister showed me this one, i think it's very good for the price point and what i'm looking for, thoughts?
