- I bought At&T WiFi and they gave me a router last week. Days later, I experienced WiFi issues. Even though the router is about 20 feet from my tv/ps4.

| Finally have wired internet on my second floor - used MoCA Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:14 PM PDT I've been trying to find a way without doing a lot of wall damage to get ethernet to the second floor of my house for a few years. I was contemplating going on the outside of the house and behind siding, but really did not want to. Wife did not consent to me cutting into drywall on the inside, etc. Even if she did, I hate patching and painting. I bought two Motorola MoCA Adapters (2.0) at Microcenter today ($69 each - also picked up another Flex Mini to for my switch.) This set up pretty easily. My Unifi controller detected the access point right away. You have to find where the coax is in your house - we only had two tv's, so easy to find. Plug ethernet into the source adapter. Next adapter (bedroom in my case) gets plugged into coax. It now has Ethernet. I'm getting about the same speed as I would from a 1gigabit ethernet connection. Honestly, it's plenty for the devices up there (some streaming, phones, laptops - nothing major). I had a meshed access point - now it is connected. I have another meshed access point on the other end of the house - I'm going to run an ethernet cable through the attic to hook it up next. Not sure why, but I always equated the Moca devices as "powerline adapters". I had poor experiences with those in the past. So far, this is working out better than I was hoping for. Or should I call At&T and tell them to give me a new router Additional details: -I live in an appartment (there are like 8 other WiFi's in my settings)

| Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:19 AM PDT Basically the modem is connected to the coax outlet on the wall but the splitter itself isn't set up since we just moved in. A technician won't be able to come in time for us to work from home so I'm trying to set this thing up. Issue is there is nothing connected in the IN port and I'm not sure if I need to connect anything else to the OUT port of the splitter. There are 4 cables in the panel and I'm not sure which ones go where and which ones I do need to connect and which I don't need to connect. pic of cables and splitter [link] [comments]  |

I have a TP Link powerline adapter connection from the downstairs router to the upstarts office via home sockets. I only need the Ethernet connection (I don't use WiFi from the extender) during office hours. After this my laptop gets turned off til the next working day. Are powerline adapters built to just stayed switched on constantly, or should I / is there an advantage to, turning them off at the end of the day? Thanks in advance for any help. | Switched to Fiber Internet. WiFi / Additional SSID / Access Point issues. Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT Hello, I recently switched from cable internet to fiber internet. During the install, the technician provided a Zyxel router (model EMG3425-Q10A). Everything was plug and play - I setup separate SSIDs for 2.4Ghz (e.g. my24SSDI) and 5Ghz (e.g. my50SSID) and we have been getting the advertised speeds especially for devices connected via ethernet to the Zyxel router. Today, I decided to log in to the Zyxel router using the browser to look for additional features it may offer. I noticed it seems to allow defining additional SSIDs. However, after adding a new SSID (e.g. my_new24SSID), I noticed none of my devices could connect to WiFi any longer. In other words, once I added "my_new24SSID", none of my WiFi devices could get an I.P. address via "my24SSID" or "my50SSID" or "my_new24SSID". As soon as I turned off "my_new24SSID", everything started working as expected. Other things I tried:
I also noticed that in the "Maintenance" tab, under "Sys OP Mode" there is are two radio buttons for "Router Mode" as well as "Access Point" mode. "Router Mode" is selected but I am not able to change to "Access Point" mode. Turning off the built-in firewall (for testing purpose only) on the Zyxel router did not help any either. Hoping someone can provide some input on what might be going on. Is it possible that the Zyxel router might have a firmware customized for the ISP that might be preventing these additional features (adding extra SSIDs, switching to Access Point mode, etc.)? | New build PoE switch question - 2x 24 port or one 48 port? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:17 PM PDT Clarifying: 1x PoE 24 port 1x managed 24 port vs 1x 48 PoE port switch. I have about 10 PoE devices (unifi cameras and ap's). I know the common consensus is 1 switch for best connectivity, but i will be using 10 gb SFP to connect them and the ports are only going to be gigabit and wondering if there's some wisdom to keep systems somewhat redundant and clean (when they eventually die I won't have to replace a 48 port system) plus I don't/won't need the higher power capabilities but I'm sure the fan curves wouldn't be an issue if I went 48 port. Further info if it matters: thinking tp omada for now, because availability, management, and pricing. Would prefer all in one management (omada or unifi) and aware of unifi security issues, but didn't think I could beat the price/performance of wifi 6 lite for my situation so here we are. I'm just looking for a mesh wifi system to replace the dog water google nest system I have currently. One of the nest nodes died and I have had enough headaches because of it. Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:57 AM PDT Just moved to a new apartment - modem works just fine, can browse the web just fine when plugged in directly to modem. When I plug my router in however, it doesn't detect any internet. I didn't change any config during the move, so I have it set up identically to what I was before. I have done a reset, swapped cables, called Comcast to confirm modem works with no luck. The only hint I have is that it seems like the router has no DHCP info pulled from Comcast under the advanced tab. I'm at my wits end, any suggestions? | How to get router to release and reassign DHCP addresses? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:25 PM PDT I am running DD-WRT on my router, it has DHCP enabled. What would be the best way to get the router to release all DHCP IP addresses so I can set the Start IP Address to something like 192.168.1.100 so I can reserve all the sub .100 address for static addresses. Right now there are a bunch of wireless clients using some of those sub .100 address. Maybe restarting the router would do it, but maybe there is some "release all DHCP" button/command that would be cleaner, and so that is why I am asking. Thanks! [link] [comments]  |

Now i am being told to segregate the Win 10 (host) and Win 7 traffic (by Security Auditor) in the next few months. My understanding is Hyper-V offers better support for virtual machine vlan's. I just need to clear my head before i start this project. I should be ok to convert the virtualbox vm's to work with hyper-v. Regarding the network part can you correct me on the below

| How to connect to home network behind CG-NAT Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:34 PM PDT I would like to connect to my home network, so I thought to set up a VPN server on my QNAP NAS. However, my ISP is using Carrier Grade NAT, so I cannot open the required ports. After reading many posts, I'm unsure what the best approach is. I've read many solutions that essentially open a tunnel to a remote server, e.g. this port from 6 years ago. Or, set up a VPN server on the cloud, and a VPN client on my home network, and set up a site-to-site connection. Both seem pretty complicated to me to be honest. Also someone else recommended SoftEther VPN, which does NOT require a server online. This seems like a good approach, but I'm not sure how well it's maintained as there was only 1 release in the last year or so. Or, LogmeIn offers a VPN SAAS, but it's quite expensive. I also saw PiTunnel and Local.host , but they only seem to support TCP connections, not UDP. Too many options. I just want an easy to maintain, secure solution. I've got a Raspberry Pi and a QNAP I can use to configure the required software. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]  |
| Another Ethernet outlet not working post (with pictures) Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:30 PM PDT I have 3 Ethernet outlets in my house, 2 upstairs and 1 downstairs. The 2 upstairs work just fine while the 1 downstairs doesn't. On my patch panel #5 and #10 are the working ones while #1 doesn't get connection. I've moved cables directly from #5 and #10 to #1 with no success. I'll attach pictures of my patch panel and the wall outlet. | Why does a technician need to come to my apartment to install wifi? Posted: 01 Aug 2021 06:57 PM PDT I'm in chicago and trying to get RCN wifi service in my apartment. I have a modem (arris SB6190) and have a router (netgear n600). I assumed that all I would need to do is connect the coax cable to my modem, connect the modem to my router, pay for my service, and then call to activate it. I tried to pay for the service and had to make an installation appointment…. ??? what would they be doing at that appointment? I thought bringing my own equipment would avoid that? | Internet disconnects for 1-2 seconds ? (wifi) Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:33 AM PDT Tested on multiple devices. Same thing. Latest firmware. Disconnects my games / work / whatever im doing, its infuriating. Started a month or two ago. Could it be a bad router? My router is quite old to be honest. This is my router: https://www.tp-link.com/ca/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-c7/ Tested with ONLY 5ghz working (its dual band), but issue did persist. Tested on 2.4ghz same issue, multiple devices. Tested LITERALLY on the side of the router, same issue. Factory reset but issue persists. Next steps: Test wired on a laptop. If you guys/ gals have any recommendations on decent cheap PoE switches that do VLANs well I'd love to know. I only need a good 4 port switch with relatively minimum power requirements. | Upgraded router, upload to download speed ratio much lower on wifi than with older router. Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:22 PM PDT I recently upgraded my old router (TP-Link AC1300) to a new one (TP-Link AX3000). Took three samples with each of three devices from four locations and found the average in speed changes on wifi using google's speed test tool. The results are showing a 35-45% increase in download speed with the new router and a 28-72% decrease in upload speed compared to the old router while on wifi. As a control- I run ethernet directly to my laptop from the modem, through the old router, and through the new router, and get the same upload and download speed and ratio (roughly 1:1), ~900mbps up and down (essentially the advertised rate from Fios). A few things to consider - This is all on 5ghz band and I reused the old SSID. I implemented WPA2-PSK (AES) for security setting in new router. This was set to Auto on the old router. Not sure if this could be the cause. OFDMA is enabled by default on the new router. Not sure if this was an option on the old router. What could be causing such a large decrease in upload performance when download performance has improved so much? [link] [comments]  |
