Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Most of you might already be well aware of this, but it bears repeating - modular PSU cables are NOT interchangeable.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:27 AM PDT

Earlier this week I was elated to find out that I had finally won a 3080 from the Newegg shuffle, after entering since November without any success. My Ventus 3080 Ti arrived just 2 days later, on Wednesday, and I was packed with excitement, eager to get my new card in. Because my power supply was only 750w, I felt it was probably best to upgrade to 850w Seasonic Platinum before putting the new card in (my 9900k is heavily OC'd). After finishing work I sat down at my desk and couldn't wait to get my build running with the new hardware.

I took out my old Thermaltake PSU, and here's where everything went horribly wrong. "I'm sure there's no problem just using the old cables that are connected to everything," I thought.

    No.

    No.

    HUGE MISTAKE.

When my PC didn't post or show any power after swapping the cables into my new PSU (yes, they fit fine), I was puzzled. I thought it could be the cables (duh), and swapped the ATX power and CPU power cables, as well as my 3080 Ti PCI-E power connector. I did not swap the remaining cables for SATA power and AIO / fan connectors.

I think you guys see where this is going.

After putting everything back in I flipped the power and was relieved to see my mobo light up. Hit the power switch, and the power instantly cycled. Everything flashed for half a second and turned off. My stomach dropped harder than you could imagine and I was instantly overcome with dread. I tried again. Same result. Knew something was obviously very wrong, and my mind immediately went to the modular cables.

I knew what I did. It was too late.

    My total damages were

    • 3x NZXT AER 140mm RGB fans

    • 1x NZXT AER 120mm RGB fan

    • 1x Corsair H115i Platinum AIO (no longer works, I think the pump got fried)

    • 2x WD HDDs somewhere around 4TB. Thankfully, no valuable data, just a bunch of junk stuff I've amassed over the last 2 or 3 PCs I had them in.

All the fans still work as fans, but the LEDs are completely dead. AIO just doesn't work at all.

My one very VERY bright reprieve in this shitty experience is that the PC didn't power on when I first had the wrong cables attached to my motherboard and 3080. Thank GOD none of my expensive parts were damaged (mobo, CPU, GPU, ram are all fine). I was able to run over to Bestbuy just before they closed on Wednesday night to pick up a replacement AIO, but had to downgrade to a 240mm because that's all that was in-store. Fortunately, after installing the new AIO, everything was working fine and I got to enjoy my new card for the rest of the night.

I share my story of extreme stupidity with you guys in the hopes that no one who reads it will repeat my mistake. I've been building PCs for like 15 years, over a dozen builds under my belt, but I never swapped out a PSU before. Never read this anywhere so it just didn't occur to me that the cables are not universal and standardized. After reading some heavy-hearted threads by other builders who made the same mistake, I learned that this is a lot more common knowledge than I thought.

Here's your friendly reminder for this year guys: don't be lazy, swap all of your modular PSU cables if you change power supplies!!

    Got IP Banned from pcpartpicker.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 06:47 PM PDT

So I was using this chrome extension to open a bunch of tabs at one time because I was trying to compare a bunch of parts as well as pricing and availability.

I think it must have triggered something on pcpartpicker's site because now I have a full IP ban from my home. I tried reaching out by contacting them through their online help on their site, as well as reaching out to them on Facebook.

Someone saw the message on Facebook, but never replied. No contact yet from them through e-mail.

This seems like a pretty innocent thing to use. I think it tripped their bot detection system because as I was trying to go through my tabs, I noticed some had the "prove you aren't a bot" prompt, but due to how the extension works, I never even had a chance before getting IP banned.

Has anyone had any experience with this before? I've been using them for the last 6 years or so to build my own PCs and put together builds for other people and never had any problems. I assume they've beefed up security to deal with scalpers, but it just sucks to lose access to one of my best resources for building PCs.

Edit: VPNs and hotspots are temporary fixes, trying to go about not be banned anymore.

I'm a soldier and I make about 270$ a month. Can I build a PC and still afford other living expenses?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:17 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm a 22 year old soldier and I make about 270$ a month. I used to have a PS4 until it finally gave up on me (I guess it reached its end after all these years lol).

Anyway, I only play Warzone and Modern Warfare.

I know 270$ is barely enough for even the cheapest part per month but I only need it to run smoothly and hopefully better than a PS4 runs it. Is it possible with this little money?

    Thanks in advance!

Skip the racket - get a box fan!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:47 AM PDT

I have 6 RGB fans as well, but I'm growing fond of Frankenstein's Monster

EDIT: I installed a filter because I'm not THAT dumb…

EDIT 2: for clarity, I pointed the box fan so that it is blowing air into the case and out the back vent (where the CPU cooler and GPU are). This only can work well for you if you have case intake fans installed already or cover all of the intake vents in the case. your typical 120-140mm exhaust fans might only be a hindrance with the kind of airflow I'm getting lol (a bit like trying to make a jet engine fly faster with a propeller)

RTX 3080 Choices. Yes you heard that right

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I am in a very fortunate position and have 2 RTX 3080s in my possession. One ASUS TUF OC and one EVGA FTW3 Ultra. The ASUS card is non LHR and the EVGA is LHR, I am not a miner, just a gamer, but does this have any performance for gaming? Thats the only difference I know between the two cards, so what are the other factors that you would make a choice based on, and which one would y'all choose? Thanks

To build a PC, or buy a pre build?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:18 PM PDT

With the current state of the market… should I buy a prebuilt PC or build one myself?

Finally got my dream job and after a few months, I've almost saved enough to finally invest in my dream PC/ setup.

I don't know much about PC's, but am willing to learn, I just know that 30 series cards are harder to find than gold right now. Wondering if I should take the time to try to get my hands on one, since I know how to by having just gone through the process to get a PS5, it just takes time and effort.

Or should I just find a prebuild that suits my wants? Anyone know of any good prebuilds on the market, or the best places to look at them? In the past I've heard to stay away, but it seems as though with the current state of things, that they are some good options.

    Thanks in advance!

    New PC won't boot.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:38 PM PDT

    Msi tomahawk x570

    Corsair SF 750 psu

    5800x

    3070TI

    Corsair aio/ram 3600

    Samsung m.2

    2 Corsair fan controllers

First power on the PC booted right up into bios. I was reading about the windows install for about 5 minutes while I left the PC in bios screen. All the sudden it shut off and now won't power back on. Now if I turn off the psu and back on and hit the power button 3 of the fans spin and the led debug lights on the motherboard flash for a second. And then wont do anything else.

At this point I've removed the GPU altogether, unplugged and plugged everything back in, taken the ram down to one stick and tried different sticks in different slots as well as no ram at all, took out and put back the m.2 drive. Added the +4 to the CPU power even though most people online say it's not needed, and lastly I tried the paperclip with the psu test and all the lights and everything come on when I do that. I'm totally at a loss at this point and would appreciate any help.

Is there a noticeable difference between 1080 and 1440p?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:20 PM PDT

I found a 24.5 inch 165hz monitor for roughly 180$usd but it's in 1080p. Is there a large enough difference between 1080 and 1440p to make it worth spending 50$+ extra? My pc is definitely capable of handling both 165hz and 1440p.

    Noob needing help

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:33 PM PDT

Hi, I have recently built my first desktop and I am really looking forward to be able to do more things than what my laptop currently allows. I believe I have all the parts, however when I boot up, I am greeted with a blank screen. This is normally black, but has been static-like and white. Windows isn't installed yet however I do have it on a memory stick which is plugged in for every boot. Everything seems to be connected properly. Any suggestions?

My specs are: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: 1050ti Mobo: Asus Prime A520M-K (came with CPU installed) RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) 3000MHz Harddrive: Toshiba DT01ACA050 (500GB) Power Supply: EVGA 600W 80 Plus Certified Power Supply.

Cheap pc build for rocket league

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:12 PM PDT

I have about a $500-600 budget ik that's not a lot for pc but I'm just trying to see what I can get bc rocket league runs on unreal engine 3 and the engine is pretty old so i wouldn't think that it would take a lot for my pc to run it on like the display setting that can help my fps go up to like 100 maybe. Also if there any prebuilts anyone would like to recommend I will take those as answers also. Thank you.

Gpu fans behaving weirdly (starting and stopping unsynchronized)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:50 PM PDT

I just got a brand new pc with a gigabyte rtx 3060. I just noticed that the three fans on the gpu sometimes start stopping and starting, which I am unsure of whether that is supposed to happen. The fans will also be unsynchronized, so one or two may be spinning when the other is stopped. I am just wondering if this is normal behavior or if there is a problem

Running Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 with a HP Reverb 2

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:41 PM PDT

Hi! I recently bought an HP Reverb G2 and Logitech x52 professional joystick and throttle controller.

I quickly discovered my PC is struggling and I'm curious if anyone would know if an upgrade to best-in-class GPU, etc. would make a difference.

I currently have a GeForce RTX 3070 and an eight core 3.6 GHz CPU with 16GB of memory. Sadly I bought it as a pre-build and didn't really have time to dive into the stats.

I'm curious if I build my own PC: 1. Would an upgrade to a 3080 or 3090 make a substantial improvement in the VR experience? 2. Are there other factors that I am not considering?

    Thanks!

NVMe SSD connected to PCIe expansion card being detected, but read as 0 byte disk.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:03 PM PDT

    What is your parts list?

    HP Pre-built
    Additional mods:

    • WD_BLACK 500GB SN750 NVMe

    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz

    • Xiwai Low Profile PCI-E 3.0 x1 Lane to M.2 NGFF M-Key SSD Nvme AHCI PCI Express Adapter Card

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I recently purchased this computer and decided to upgrade its NVMe SSD to one with more storage. To not waste the one it came with, I purchased a PCIe -> M.2 M-Key card to use the included drive as well.

I mounted the card with no problem, and even lights up and blinks.

I installed Windows on the new SSD, formatted the old drives directly from setup.

Now with Windows running, the disk shows up as Size: 0B, and Free: 0B.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I ran diskpart and selected the 0B disk, trying to format it.
    I get the error message:

DiskPart has encountered an error: A device which does not exist was specified. See the System Event Log for more information.

Opening Disk Manager prompts me to initialize the Disk, but then gives me the same error code.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Better CPU zen 3 deal, 5800X for $360 or 5900x for $549

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:52 PM PDT

Which of the two would you choose to drive a rtx 3080 at 3440x1440 ultrawide for the next 3-5 years? Not looking to upgrade to AM5 until it matures so I will be stuck with AM4 for a while. Have a b450 motherboard with the latest bios ready to make the switch to zen 3 from a 3700x. I will be using it for mainly gaming and I will most likely have alot of chrome tabs open with Spotify, discord,...etc. nothing crazy.

    Edit: should I even consider a 5600x?

Also my front panel cables has d-rgb fan, power sw cables but no indication of where they go on the motherboard. Sorry if a dumb question, my build was coming well until cables...

How strongly does the retention bracket (AM4) hold the CPU?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:27 AM PDT

I'll be traveling in a few weeks and even though my pc is small enough to be taken as carry-on, I unfortunately can't. I'll be putting it in with the rest of my luggage. To prevent undue stress on the motherboard, I'll be taking off the heatsink (noctua NH L12S) and the GPU. If it helps, I have an ITX motherboard in an Ncase M1.

Does the AM4 retention bracket hold in the CPU strongly enough for me to leave it without a heatsink? Or should I leave the heatsink on and pray it stays safe? Thanks.

Is there any point in upgrading to the newer gpu models if I'm only playing at 1080p on a 75hz monitor?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:20 PM PDT

I don't plan on upgrading my monitor--my eyesight doesn't notice any difference at the distance I'm playing. I currently have a rx 570 8gb which runs all my current games including BFV at max settings with a comfortable and stable 60 fps.

I watched a comparison video for the rx 570 vs the 3060 xc, and could not tell any difference. I sent the video to my brother, who tends to have an eye for graphics, and he could not tell either (at 1080p). At this point, I'm wondering if spending the money for a newer card is even worth the hassle and nuke to wallet.

Does anyone else have any experience with making a jump in this scenario and can confidently say the upgrade was worth it?

Bang Sound and Now the PC doesn't turn on... 10 Year old pc

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:12 PM PDT

    Hi

Today, when I turn on the PC in the morning for work. I heard a blast noise and my breaker trips at the mains. I turned on the breaker and tried turning on the PC again but now the fan spins slowly and the motherboard stamdby light is also blinking. The Fan also seems like they are not getting continuous voltage. How can I find out if it's the PSU or something other? I am afraid because if I put a new PSU, something bad on motherboard or cpu will damage that psu also.

Specs: Motherboard: Intel DH67CL CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 Ram: 8 GB DDR3 Hard Drive: 500 Gb GPU: No Gpu Corsair water cooling.
