    Moronic Monday!

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 05:00 PM PDT

It's Monday, you've not yet had coffee and the week ahead is gonna suck. Let's open the floor for a weekly Stupid Questions Thread, so we can all ask those questions we're too embarrassed to ask!

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Serious answers are not expected.

Note: This post is created at 01:00 UTC. It may not be Monday where you are in the world, no need to comment on it.

    Dell N3132PX-ON && 2P 40GbE Module TNFNV --- Support for QSPF+ Breakout?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:30 PM PDT

I recently acquired a Dell N3132PX-ON for the lab. Does the Dell N3132PX-ON 2P 40GbE QSFP+ Uplink Module TNFNV also support quad port breakout cables? I'm coming from the H3C/HPE Comware side of things so know relatively little about these PowerConnect switches.

I want to be able to add as many 10G Connections as possible without needing to add another switch in a stack N2xxx/3xxx or pairing it with a N4024/N4024F. Support for breakout cables would net me 12x 10G ports instead of a max of 6 with the standard 10G SFP+ uplink module.

    SCADA/ICS VLAN segmentation - Discussion

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 10:16 AM PDT

In a standard SCADA/ICS environment with HMI's, PLC's, Engineer workstations, SCADA servers, etc. How do you all group systems and segment?

Mainly talking about Purdue model level 3-0.

    Cable Certification Gear

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 04:32 PM PDT

A recent post got me thinking about cable Certification. I have thousands of drops that likely were never really tested. And there is always a ghost in the machine. TDR tests from switches say all the runs are bad as well.

The tester we use now is a 15 year old fluke that gives iffy results at best, and always has.

It looks like copper certification machines can run into 5 figures pretty quick.

Is there anything in between that would give me good data in the under 3k price range? All runs a 5, 5e, 6, 6a.

    Thanks!

Cloud based APs or lightweight APs with WLCs

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 09:50 AM PDT

I'm going through the CCNA book at the moment and I wanted to know if there is any benefit to using the lightweight APs with WLCs over controlling over the cloud.

Where I work I see a lot of Meraki MX series APs but I also see lightweight APs with WLCs coming in so I was quite curious.

Are there specific use cases where lightweight APs with WLCs are better then cloud based APs as cloud based just seems much better to me or is it just a matter of costs?

Default route (internet bound) over EIGRP stub overlayed with 3rd party managed MPLS

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 06:52 AM PDT

I feel silly for even having to ask this, but it's been a little while since I played around with routing in this way...

Long story short - we are getting rid of our Australian data centre, which has direct BGP interface with our MPLS provider (Centurylink). Instead we are planning to route the one site without a dedicated internet circuit ("Moo" in my diagram) via a site in Sydney for their internet connectivity. We also will need to configure a failover for all the other sites we have in Australia to route interent via MPLS toward Sydney.

I've mocked up a like-for-like environment in GNS3 (minus whatever the hell Centurylink do in their MPLS cores, supplemeted with some basic BGP, no VRFs).

    https://i.imgur.com/UWzrcpC.png

Shoving an overlay route on it doesn't work, i.e.:

    ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 <sydney core switch IP>

I am not 100% sure if Centurylink have some safeguards to stop me advertising a default route directly from Sydney... Unfortunately we don't have time to mess around with asking them to make changes in their configuration.

    Notes:

    • I have read-access to the Centurylink CPE's but not PE's, so I can't make changes anywhere in their environment
    • The new Sydney site where I am planning to break out internet only has an EIGRP peering (which is redistributed into Centurylink BGP on their CPE)

I am thinking this is a relatively easy one, and I am just missing the trees for the woods... any help is appreciated!

EIGRP: redistributing a static tracked route?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:05 PM PDT

    Hello,

    I have the following route:

    ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 2.2.2.2 10
    ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 3.3.3.3 track 1

If I redistribute static route-map in EIGRP with 1.1.1.1/32 prefix am I in for any issues with multiple entries in the topology table or will it just take the active route?

    thanks

Can I use a QSFP28 copper DAC to connect two QSFP+ ports for 40GbE?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:57 PM PDT

I've been experimenting with different combinations of NICs between my PC and NAS to get the fastest possible connection. Because they're both running PCIe 3.0 x4, I know I can't get 50 or even 40Gbps, but I'd like to get as close as possible. I recently tried these Mellanox ConnectX-4 NICs, which use QSFP28, with a QSFP28 DAC. They established nominal 40GbE and 50GbE links, but both ran at only 25Gbps. Likewise, these have 2x25GbE ports, but they were limited to a combined throughput of 25Gbps. This therefore appears to be a chipset limitation: when running these x8 cards in an x4 slot, the maximum throughput is 25Gbps.

Next I'm going to try some older 40/56GbE ConnectX-3 NICs, which connect using QSFP+. Do I need a new DAC, or can I use the QSFP28 one? I know that a QSFP28 cable won't work for 100GbE on QSFP hardware, but will it work for 40GbE?
