    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Around 1000€ / 9000 HRK ; Croatia / EU
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ultrabook, build quality, performance, battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Most demanding game to be run on the laptop is Sims 4, other than that it's just movies, web-browsing and word/powerpoint work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
The Sims 4, settings and fps is not that important, just as long as they can be adjusted to not lag/play smoothly.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Just that it's light and thin, everything else is a bonus
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My girlfriend wants a macbook but is open to getting a regular laptop if it means better performance for the price, but wants it light and thin as a macbook ( there are no requirements when it comes to screen size ).
I do have to mention that laptop prices in Croatia are stupid high, so if you have a laptop way under 1000€ that you would recommend please do, cuz the budget is in Croatian HRK so I dont know how the price will translate from € to HRK. In essence all recommendations under the 1000€ budget are welcome no matter the price.

Looking for the closest thing to an XPS 15 out there [USA $700-$2000]

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:45 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Purchasing in the US. Budget is anything under 2000 US dollars, aiming for mid 1000s.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Hard to say - looking for an all-in-one. Battery life is probably the lowest, with build quality and performance the highest. A slim, bezel-less form factor is also up there, though I do not care about things like 2-in-1s.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Mildly, prefer the laptop to run well over size.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.14"-15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.I am casual gamer who doesn't really care about visual fidelity - I just want to run games like Dota 2 at low settings.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Same as above - no modern AAA games just low-mid settings for older games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?All of the above - I find the keyboard and touchpad to be the most important bits.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I have owned a Dell XPS 15 9560 for around 4 years. The battery recently died, and rather than pay to get it replaced I'm upgrading. I am basically looking for the laptop that is the closest to the XPS 15 in build quality, form factor, screen quality/bezel-less design, peripheral quality, design, and cpu performance/memory that DOESN'T have a dedicated graphics card. My old XPS had horrible heating issues exacerbated by its dedicated graphics card and ultra-slim design, so anything that can achieve something similar and look/feel similar without those problems is perfect for me. For a benchmark, I have been looking at the lenovo ideapad 9i/7i but I am wary on lenovo's quality over time and would be open to other suggestions!

[Canada] $1000 max, laptop for gaming and school.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 07:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
My max is $1000 CAD, less is preferable.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'm open to refurbs, but not used.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, battery life, portability, build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Somewhat important, I'm going to be moving this laptop a lot so weight matters but I don't really need it to be thin.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm going to be mostly gaming (Rocket League, R6 Siege, Minecraft, Valorant). I also plan on using Photoshop and Premiere on the rare occasion.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I usually play Rocket league, R6, MC, and Valorant. I do plan on playing more intensive games in the future. I would want at least 75 fps (100 fps preferable) on modern titles. I don't mind putting my settings to low/medium.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like to have expandable ram and storage but performance comes first.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would prefer that I'm buying from a reputable vendor and that there is a monthly pay option, Linux friendly would also be nice (If it isn't, that's fine), but again, performance comes first.

Gaming laptop with long battery life

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 04:14 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop that can handle some light gaming but primarily I'm looking for something with a good battery life. It seems ATM Nvidia 3060 based laptops are the sweet spot in terms of price, I could go for a lower end GPU but then I'm sacrificing a lot of performance for not much cash if I look at machines with a good battery life.

I don't really care about gaming battery life as when I'm on battery I'll mostly be doing web browsing type of things, for that same reason the screen quality isn't that important as I'll be using an external when doing anything where I care about the monitor.

I've found the Asus TUF Dash (3060 85w, i7-11370H) and Lenovo Legion 5 (3600 130w, 5600H), wondering if anyone had any other recommendations I should look at.

13" Laptop: XPS 9305 vs 9310 vs something else? (1500 CAD)

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:36 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Maximum 1500 CAD or so, prefer as low as possible to meet my requirements

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

If I can buy them from a reputable company

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No need for 2 in 1, build quality and weight is priority. Then performance. Battery life just needs to be about 3-4 hours of hard work at most, and the rest just browsing/word processing

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important. Thinness is not as important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Maximum 15.6 or so

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might play dirt rally and assetto corsa, but that's it. Relatively low requirements so most IGPUs can handle it nowadays

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

USB type c would be nice. Ergonomic/good keyboard is appreciated. Would probably be using a mouse for any real work so touchpad not super important. Aesthetics are somewhat important

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I made a similar post last week, and now I have actually went into the store to feel all the latest laptops and I feel like I have come to a small group of contenders.

    By price:

    1) XPS 9310 ($1700) - My favourite windows laptop by far, but is incredibly expensive. The keyboard is so good and feels the closest to a real standalone keyboard. The screen is also huge considering how small the laptop is. However, it's really expensive for what you get.

    2) XPS 9305 ($1450 on sale now) - Wasn't able to try this one in store, but from what I know, the only difference between this and the 9310 is a slightly smaller keyboard and 16:9 screen

    3) Macbook Air ($1100 + free airpods for student) - It's a really great cheaper option, but while still solid, the keyboard didn't have as much travel as I would've liked and I preferred the Envy and XPS keyboard. I'm also not sure if I can move to the MacOS platform smoothly. This price is for the 8gb/256gb since i won't be playing any games at all on this

    4) HP Envy ($1300) - This one was a bit of a wildcard since it wasn't even on my radar, but after getting a feel of it, I actually really like it. Keyboard is not quite as good as the XPS but still very large and I like that it also has deep travel. Since the price is so close, I would want to compare it to the 9305, but I can't find any of them available in my area.

    My questions:

    1) Is the XPS 9305 inferior to the 9310 in any way? I've done a lot of research and I can't find any conclusive answer. It does look like the keyboard is a bit smaller as well as the screen, but is the actual keyboard still functionally the same as the 9310?

    2) To me, it looks like the macbook air is the best option for the money if I can get used to MacOS. Just between the Windows laptops though, which would you recommend?

    3) With these prices for 16gb of RAM, are there any Lenovo Thinkpads worth buying? I looked into them since they are often recommended, but 16gb of RAM was usually ~1800 CAD even on "sale".

    Thanks!

Light gaming laptop in Canada with Ethernet port

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 07:59 PM PDT

Questionnaire added to bottom of post

In Canada (i.e. different stock on Amazon for example)

Looking for the holy grail, gaming laptop, light and cheap! Looking for <$2,500 but ideally closer to $1,500

Looking for anything of good value. My games are super light from what I know, but who knows, want to be able to do future games:

    • League of Legends
    • Diablo 4 when it comes out
    • Diablo 2 remastered

I don't really care if screen is huge, I use an external monitor, and when on the go, a large screen isn't something I really need. Nice to have but low priority.

    Ethernet jack is a must

Any good recommendations or deals out there?Looked at Alienware but Dell has G series as well, don't understand why they compete with themselves?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?LEauge of legends, diablo 4 when it comes out

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Need ethernet port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.not much thank you!@

MSI GF75 from Costco, good deal?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:30 PM PDT

So while wandering around Costco I ran across a midlevel gaming laptop with the following specs for $750

I'd post a link to the website, but I could not find it. It might be a local deal.

    17.3 in screen

    i5 - 10300H

    GTX 1650Ti

    8GB ram

    512 SSD

Any thoughts? I'm not sure what laptops are going for now so I'm not sure if this is worth it or not. Thanks!
