Who makes this type of drop-ceiling rack enclosure?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:35 AM PST

I encountered one of these enclosures 4-5 years ago and took these pictures. Now I have a need for one and I am trying to find out who makes these. Any leads?

Engineers of reddit that switched vendors, what is your experience?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:47 PM PST

    hi all,

what did you gain? lost something? ever thought to go back? did it make you a better engineer? was your experience transferrable?

a friend of mine(legit) is looking to switch the jobs between Cisco and Juniper.

how employers in general look at such multi-vendor specialists?

is it better to continue building up knowledge on solely Cisco?

Im would like to route specific traffic out Port A and the rest Port B, is this a possibility, with a L3 switch?

Edit* 2 VLANS, 10 and 30. all traffic from 30 hits switch and goes out a defined port. http, https traffic from vlan 10, hits switch and goes out a different port, but all other traffic from vlan 10 goes out the same port as vlan 30 traffic.

Is it normal to see destinations that don't belong to my server in the incoming firewall log?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:09 AM PST

The destinations are from the same dedicated server provider and they do not ping. Their explanation is:

"As you have already correctly tested from your side, the IP-addresses are not reachable, because they are not allocated to any server. Because of this the switch tries to broadcast the packets here"

Aren't switches supposed to be a little smarter? Is this normal? Do I have to do anything about it? Can I do anything about it?

EDIT: Further relevant info. The SRC IPs are blacklisted IPs from around the world. They are not local to this subnet. Also this is the HOST machine for KVM (virtualization). The network interface is in PROMISCUOUS mode. (This is probably required for bridge networking)

    Simple Question re Ethernet Cabling

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST

Hi All, thanks for looking. I am currently in the process of an office move, and at the moment our new office has partitioning done, and our electrician is just in the process of wiring up our ethernet and electrical wiring. The problem is, my boss would like all rooms to have ethernet sockets on BOTH sides of the room, however we only have one set (voice and data) of ethernets going to each room. BUT only one set will be active at once. Basicalyl its so that our clients can decide which side of the room their desk can go on. Our electrician thinks we can just piggy back (daisy chain) both of the ethernet cables up and over the ceiling and into the opposite side of the room. For some reason I cant really articulate why but I dont think this will work, but in practice should it work? TIA

Whats up with all the Merkai and Ubiquiti switches in the DC?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:11 PM PST

I go to quite a few DCs around the Chicago and Detroit area. I have seen lots of odd things like a cage full of original Digital AlphaServers from 94, etc. Lately, I see a big trend mostly in mixed colocations where tons of Merkai and Ubiquiti gear is being installed by young network admins.

Today I walked by three full racks of super expensive PureStroage NVMe SAN arrays connected to Merkai 10gig agg switches. We're talking 10+ million dollars in a storage connected to questionable networking gear for iSCSI.

Enterprises are investing in super expensive compute, storage and then some genius connects it to questionable networking gear. Wondering if anyone seeing the same.

Connecting Nanostation Loco M2 to managed switch, no internet getting through.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:53 PM PST

I had an old post on here about getting a wireless signal through a shipping container, it's now the time of year I actually have to execute the idea taken from the previous thread.

The idea taken was simple. A Ubiquiti Nanostation mounted outside the container, ran down to a managed switch inside the container.

I have all the hardware, and have the Nanostation transmitting with the local network made available to me. My trouble lies in getting that signal into a usable form for a laptop, POS system, and some cameras to work with all to be hardwired.

    Thanks in advance!

Re-run pull string in filled conduit

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:49 PM PST

Short version - butthole subcontractor on the project used the provided pull tape in the buried 2" conduit to haul his fiber along a ~600' run (3 buried vaults) and couldn't be bothered to drag a replacement tape along with the new fiber. This was several years ago so no use tracking him down and kicking him in the nuts.

Now I need another fiber bundle run through the same buried conduit (it's 100% owned and on our property) but the carrier won't do it unless there's pull tape.

I know nearly nothing about fiber physical plant. Please advise the following:

    1. Can one use the regular "shopvac/compressor+pullstring+ plastic bag" method when there's already a 6- or 12-pair bundle inside the conduit? And then use the pullstring to pull in a length of tape? Or does it get tangled up....

    2. Is there a better method?

    3. Is this too difficult for general handyman type skill level (NOT fiber/cabling techs) that do our facilities work?

    4. Will a cabling contractor even be interested in a job as dumb as running pull tapes?

    5. Fuck.

    Thank you for any input.

Internet Port scanning thresholds - Firepower

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:19 AM PST

does anyone fine tune the firepower ips when getting scanned from the internet with programs like nessus/qualys/nmap so that devices dont get alot of good info with searching for open ports, fingerprints, etc. or after 4-5 pings or 4-5 tcp connects ban ip.

firepower is blocking scans but would like to cut down on chatter when a port scan is performed on wellknown ports (1-1024).

Anyone go from Calix FTTB/H platform to Nokia 7360's platform or even have experience with it? Looking at XGS-PON vendors but wanted to get someone with experience.

Currently evaluating our current vendor and wanted to know if anyone is rolling the line card on the 7360 ISAM line with XGS-PON. I was more curious if you're running into a boatload of bugs or if your team has chosen this as a solid platform.

Intermittent ping responses and dead inbound internet access

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:35 PM PST

I have 4 usable static ip's (.51-.54) from Spectrum via a Cisco DPQ3925 modem and have the ip's statically programmed to 4 different hosts attached to the built in switch. Network .51 has a linksys LRT224 router and a private network behind it. Network .52 has a Meraki router and a private network behind it. Network .53 has a Nethserver box with a private network behind it. Network .54 has my credit card machine on it and is standalone so I can pass PCI compliance.

Periodically ip's .51 and .53 quit responding to pings and subsequently I can't connect to those hosts from the internet. I can get on the networks behind those hosts and ping, tracert, etc to the Internet without an issue. The hosts on ip's .52 and .54 don't seem to have any ping issues from the internet when .51 and .53 aren't responding. I thought that the built in switch was the issue so I moved all 4 hosts to an external switch with a jumper to the modem. Everything seems to work ok both inbound and outbound for about 6 hours and then I started having issues with networks .51 and .53 again.

Does anyone have any idea why 2 out of 4 ip's might be going "dead" from the internet? Dealing with Spectrum tech support is a pain and past experience has shown that one needs to have their ducks in a row with plenty of supporting data before they think it's their issue.

    HP ProCurve 4208vl

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:30 PM PST

    Hello :)!!

I need to create a handful of VLAN's on a HP ProCurve switch. Normally, I use Cisco gear, so please try not to hate!

I have a couple questions! First, when I create a VLAN on the core switch, will that VLAN propagate to my IDF switches (which for the most part are Cisco Catalyst 2960's), or do I need to add that VLAN to the trunk ports of the core manually? Second, if I do have to add them manually, is there a way to pass them to my other IDF's automatically?

    Thanks in advance!!!

Register thousands of domains to one ssl cert

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:21 PM PST

I dont believe this is possible but my higher up's told me to check reddit, we have about 9 thousand domains and dont want to manage 900 SSL Certs, is it possible to register more than the current limits of about 100 to 250 per cert? From what i read on the CA, its not really about the domains, its more about the bytes it takes for each ssl/domain.

Why is NFV becoming popular now?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:46 PM PST

I'm curious what changed that made NFV suddenly a popular prospect.

Is it a cost efficiency thing? Presumably the rise of cloud computing brought down the cost of commodity servers but did that do enough to make it feasible?

Is it just a result of faster computers?

    Virtualisation improvements?

    Is it all just hype?

Edit: So it's clear I don't believe NFV is all just hype. Just wondering why it seems things are kicking off now when the principle behind the technology has been around for years.

Need Help With Cisco WLC and high client connection times

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:27 PM PST

Hello r/networking I come to you with an issues that has been bothering me all week. I am working with a client who has a Cisco WLC 2504 and 23 attached AP's. I am having reported issues with client connection times. It appears that once they are connected they seam to be fine but they are having to put in credentials up to 3 times to get that AP to accept their connection.

I know this is a super vague issue and I haven't provided much details but I'm just looking for a good starting place. I can provide any configs you need to help diagnose the issue.

My first though is it seams they have a very high number of Rouge AP's (224) due to proximity of an apartment complex. Could this be causing the issue?

back up to a wired idf switch

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:00 AM PST

    Hi folks,

Long story short, I've started a new job which has me doing things I haven't done in a long time (10+ years) and need to ask fellow techs a pretty silly question, I feel anyway.

I have a bunch of computers about 500m away from my servers wired through ethernet to an IDF switch that is fiber to the servers. I need a back up solution in case the fiber is down, someone cut it last week and it was a nightmare. I have a wifi network that reaches these computers but they don't have wifi cards. What I would like to do is connect the switch at the idf by ethernet to a wifi bridge/hub/repeater/whatever that is connected to my existing wifi network back to the servers.

What is the best way to go about doing this? Am I going about this the wrong way. I do not want to add more wires back to the server room. It's a manufacturing environment and it's a already mess. We also can't replace the computers or add wifi cards to them as they are specialty computers, not your average desktop.

    Thanks!

    Thank you.

Level3 waves, MX104s, and weird link state behavior

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:34 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Neither Level3 or Juniper could find a smoking gun, so I'm curious if anyone's ever ran into this behavior.

I have 3 sites with pairs of MX104s (running 17.4R2) in each site and waves between the sites (ring topology). Periodically the link between a given pair of sites goes down for no good reason, despite having good light levels. In order to bring the link back up I have to offline/online the entire card on one or sometimes both sides, since simply disabling/enabling the interface doesn't seem to do the trick. The link down event does also occur for good reasons occasionally like a fiber cut and link state doesn't always recover without intervention.

In this situation we're working with 1 Gb waves delivered with SMF, and configuration matches between all sites. Once the links are up traffic passes through just fine, but whatever blip causes the ports to go down every few weeks results in the ports not recovering without intervention. Nothing strange pops up in the logs. The location that most frequently experiences this issue does have the colo provider running DWDM between the buildings where Level3's handoff is and where our equipment is.

There's also a non-zero chance I should've just escalated all the things until either vendor could find something wrong, but their conclusions line up with everything I was seeing.

Has anyone ever ran into something like this before?

TL;DR: 1 GbE SMF ports on MX104s connected with a Level3 wave remain in a down state despite having good light levels on both sides, until the card gets offlined/onlined. Support from both vendors doesn't see anything wrong.

Anyone using the UCS python SDK?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:13 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to try to automate some of the workloads of our UCS environment by using the python SDK - i have python exerience and UCS experience however I find any usable documentation on the UCS python SDK very poor.

I Have gone through the DevNet UCS SDK guides and all it seems to say is launch the UCS Java GUI (We do not use this, we are on UCSM 3.2(1d)) and copy the commands that the GUI presents into the conversion tool .... not very useful at all.

Is there any documentation that gives users a run down of the SDK from day 1? the structure of the managed objects tree within UCS? guides on the various inbuilt methods etc?

    Cheers
