How to not use your graphics card! Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:16 PM PST I had built a PC for personal use in 2016 which included a 750ti. The PC was built for light gaming & internet browsing, so I never noticed the difference. Today, I found out that the monitor was plugged into the Mobo. Period. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:31 AM PST You know how they say 3rd times a charm? This was not the case for my 3rd pc build. I was so excited that I couldn't wait to build my next PC. I build it late into the night, and everything was going smoothly until I got to the AIO cooler. This was my first time using liquid cooling so I made sure to read the instructions. However, I did notice that there was what looked like thermal paste spread across the block. I touched it to make sure and it made a little hole. I put a little more paste to fill the void and attached the block and the radiator. At this point it's 3 am and all I have left is to install the GPU and a hard drive. I decide I can finish it up tomorrow and everything will be fine. I started to second guess myself on putting more thermal paste on the cooler so I looked it up, and they said no don't add any more. The next morning I figured I would just remove the cooler and reapply the thermal paste. When I pull the cooling block off the CPU came out of the AM4 socket. At this point, I notice that some of the thermal paste had come out and onto the sides of the CPU. I clean off the CPU the best I could, but some of the thermal paste was still on the sides I couldn't reach. After some research, I realized that I should have twisted before I pulled. The pins on the CPU looked intact and straight, and I saw that a little bit of thermal paste got on the underside of the CPU. I try to clean it off with a microfiber cloth and some isopropyl alcohol, but a small amount of it I couldn't reach because of one of the pins. I thought it was good enough and decided to test it out. I check all my connectors, reinstalled the CPU, and the cooler. Finally, I install the GPU and hard drive. Everything seemed to go in fine. When I hit the power on button absolutely nothing happens. I start to panic. The motherboard lights are on. I thought it might be the front panel connectors so I try to short it. Nothing happens. I think it must be the thermal paste or I didn't check the pins close enough. I knew I had set it with the correct orientation, but I decided to remove it and check it again. When I removed the cooler the CPU came out of the socket AGAIN! I am seriously panicking when I go to remove the CPU from the cooling block I drop the CPU onto the metal part of my case! I am thinking in my head I am going to have a heart attack right now because of how much I am panicking. I notice several of the pins are bent on the CPU. Now, I take a long break to gain my composure and watch some videos on repairing bent CPU pins. I go to Walmart and buy some razor blades. I believe I was able to repair the CPU pins to be straight and got all of the thermal paste off. I am hopeful as the CPU slides right into the socket. I check all the connectors, apply a dot of thermal paste to the CPU and install the AIO cooler. I try to power it on but nothing happens still. TLDR; Building a new machine, had to remove the AIO cooler, and the CPU came out of the socket. Reinstalled everything, but nothing happens when I power on. When I removed the cooler the CPU came out again! I drop the CPU onto the metal part of my case! I fixed the bent CPU pins, but when I go to power it on still nothing happens. Is the i5-8600k worth the extra cost compared to the i5-8400? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:50 PM PST I'm building a new PC and was given a Z370-board as a gift and am looking for a processor towards it. I've had my eye on the 8400 for a while now and have started wondering is the 8600k worth the extra cost if I could get the 8600k for 30€ more. (220€ & 250€) I've had a FX-4300 for 3 years and I still think it's a really capable CPU for my 1080p @ 60fps light gaming, if that puts things into perspective. I am not planning to overclock for a few years at least. Specs:

My Parents want me to build a $900 PC for my little brother for Christmas Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:46 AM PST I am using a combination of parts I have around the house and deals I have found. Prices marked with $0.00 are things I already have. Suggestions? I'm really worried about temperature. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Edit: I got the 2700x/X470 on a combo deal and I already have 2 x 4GB sticks of the ram so it would increase the cost of going to faster ram by $60-$70 (not sure if it's essential enough to justify it) [link] [comments]
Really overwhelmed by CPU and GPU models. Any help? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:26 AM PST I was hoping of switching from console and I'm looking into building my first PC and I want to know what I'm building with my selected parts. The problem is that as I browse PCPartPicker I get so confused and overwhelmed by all the models and series. I just don't understand the differences between Intel and AMD CPU models as well as GPUs. For example why are there lower clock speeds for Ryzen 7 models compared to Ryzen 5? In what ways do the "X" and the "K" models of AMD and Intel CPUs differ and when would I use them? Is there any way or something I can read that can help me differentiate and tell which are better and which are right for me? Looking at all of this the first time is really confusing me [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:55 PM PST Hey folks, i red an article about undervolting the GPU. Now I think I should give it a try cause I red my Vega 56 have a lot of room. I am a total noob on undervolting or overclocking. So, can you give me some advices or good guides on youtube? Thx for reading. [link] [comments]
Is this a good upgrade for my PC? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:06 PM PST Current specs are: Ryzen 5 1600 Gigabyte B350M Gaming GeIL EVO Potenza 4GBx2 2400mhz ASUS STRIX 970 1TB HDD 128GB Kingston SSD EVGA 600B The upgrade I'm looking at currently: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
No motherboard because I can bios flash my current one to be compatible with ryzen 2. The new ram because I've heard that fast bdie ram is beneficial for ryzen. I'm going to sell my old ram. New gpu because I want to future proof kinda, and new psu because I've been using the 600B for the past two builds. Is this a good choice? Or is there something I'm missing m? gtx 1080 smoke from connectors Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:34 PM PST Playing a game when my PC shut down. It felt like a power outage but the TV was still on so it pulled the power strip and checked my PC for water leaks. The CPU and GPU have water blocks and I didn't see any leaks or anything that looked off. I knew it was a bad idea but I was curious so it turned it back on and a puff of smoke came from the connectors and I yanked the plug again. I knew the card was toast after that so I pulled the connectors. I plugged my monitor into onboard and turned the PC back on and everything is working fine. I'm gonna go ahead and assume the card isn't savable but how worried should I be about the rest of the PC. Power supply worries me a little now but its modular so I may just replace the cable and roll the dice. Just curious about what happened and I cant seem to find any answers or similar problems. Problem with MSI x470 Gaming Plus Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:19 AM PST Hello, Last week i bought everything needed to build my first PC, everything went right until i turned on my PC for the first time, the computer didn't detected my 1080 Card and the VGA red led on the motherboard turned on, so i decided to put my old card Nvidia GTS 450 and it worked i could access the BIOS, so i thought my brand new 1080 was faulty, so i went to my friends computer and tried my 1080 and it Worked on his computer. Things I've done ( Nothing have worked ): - Update BIOS firmware - Use a 750w corsair PSU instead of my 650 Cooler Master - Installed windows using my old video card gts 450 and installed all the drivers on the mobo, switched cards and mobo still don't detect 1080. I don't know if this could help but should i connect the 8 pin power connector and the 4pin power connector of my motherboard? I'm using the 8 pin power connector only rn. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:11 PM PST I don't normally ask for help but I'm just hoping it's not as bad as I think. GTX 1060, maybe a year old. Always kept cool, sees occasional heavy use (by occasional I mean maybe twice/month). Other than that the PC sits idle. Had a power outage last week. PC was off. I went to power it up and the TV it's usually plugged into (via HDMI) wouldn't come on, no signal but I could hear the post. Grabbed a monitor and plugged in to HDMI. Monitor comes up ok. But when bringing up Windows sometimes the image goes to black. If it goes to desktop then it's VGA only. I took the card out and swapped into anther PC with Nvidia drivers already installed (from a GTX 970). On DVI it seems to take longer to boot and once again, VGA only. I suspected possibly a surge, even though it was on a good suppressor but the motherboard and everything else plugged in to the suppressor seem to be unaffected. I've tried reflashing the vBIOS as a last resort, no dice. Anyone else got any ideas? [link] [comments]
Want to upgrade RAM by adding another sticks, will these work together? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:02 PM PST My motherboard is Sabertooth Z77. I currently have 2x4 GB Ram Corsair Vengeance LP CML8GX3M2A1600C9. I wanted to add another 2x4 to make it 16gb. Will it work properly if i try to buy RAM with same product code? I have Corsair Vengeance LP CML8GX3M2A1600C9B in mind. They seem to be the same but just with blue color. Will it work? Or should i sell my current ram and try to buy new pair of 2x8 gb's? Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments]

Will I need a bracket to support the weight of a RTX 2070? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:06 PM PST Hey folks, I've brought myself a new pc over the past black Friday sales and am now starting to put it all together. One thought came to mind though when checking out my new graphics card. The things weighs a tone. Here's the one I brought specifically; https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N2070WF3-8GC#kf Do you think I'll need a bracket of some sort to support the weight? It has a full metal backplate but I don't know whether that'll be sufficient to hold it in place without it sagging. The motherboard and case I'm attaching it too are a MSI b450 tomahawk and Coolermaster h500p if that's of any importance. Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks! I just finished my first ever build! Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:04 PM PST https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12570810 However I am having some performance issues, I thought the 2070 would perform better and I am thinking perhaps something else is holding it back. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Theburningheretic/saved/zCh8YJ If you have any suggestions on what the build is lacking, I would love to hear from you! Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:33 PM PST I'm not really good with computers, but what's the reason everyone says you shouldn't get a Gtx 1060, especially the 3GB one? [link] [comments]
I just installed an SSD. Now what? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:32 AM PST I just installed a 500gb EVO 860 into my PC and I am excited to finally have one in there however I am not sure what to do when it comes to butting a boot on there as well as discord, steam, etc. Right now my boot is on one of my HDDs that I have had since I first built it. I also have Acronis but I was unsure what exactly to clone onto the SSD or should I just do a fresh install of Windows 10 onto my ssd and just bite the bullet and reinstall everything onto there? Once I have done one of those two options are there any Windows files I need to delete on my original HDD ? Thanks for any help and suggestions! Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:44 AM PST Hello, I am looking foreward to upgrade my cpu, since my mainboard is slowly dying. Right now i have a 3770k and a gtx 1070. I am trying to justify a 50€ price difference between these two cpus. I want to play next years games at least at 1080p 60fps. Is there any point in buying the x version over the normal one? Thanks. Edit: Thank you very much for your comments and opinions. 2600 plus a good cooler it is then. [link] [comments]
Adding a gpu to my computer hurt it? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:05 PM PST Guys I bought a 1070 ti for my pc. I thought it would fit, but it didn't. I had to cut some zip tie to make way for the gpu. Now my computer wont show anything on the monitor. The computer powers on and so does the monitor, so idk what it is. Here's a pic of my pc. What parts are safest to buy second hand? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:11 PM PST Building a PC for the first time so would love some advice on buying parts secondhand. Looking to be a mid tier gaming PC. Only need 60 FPS for AAA games for the next few years. I'm trying to pick up a few good deals on craigslist, and I'm looking for tips to avoid buying a part that's "worn out". I'm very likely to buy motherboard, CPU and GPU brand new. Storage- This seems fairly safe to buy second hand. I only want a 1 TB hard drive and 250 GB SSD and it doesn't seem like "hard use" could cause them to be really slow. Monitor- As long as it turns on and can be connected too I'm safe right? Not sure if there's any ways for monitors to "wear out" other than old age. Memory- Looking for 12- 16 GB. Seeing a lot of nice deals on CL and not sure if there's major risks to buying second hand as long as it works. Case- Is there any reason not to buy a cheap case? Could components not fit in certain cases? Fans- Don't know much about how necessary these are, but there's a bunch for $10 on CL Power supply- I know cheap power supplies are a huge no no, but as long as it's a good brand I'm safe right? Not much chance of an older power supply boning me right? GPU- Only "major" component I'm tempted to buying second hand. My research tells me GPUs don't ever "slow down." They work perfectly until they stop working forever. Should I be concerned that previous owner has overclocked it for long enough to make it near death? I'm looking at GPUs around 4GB. I think thats probably enough power for the next few years of casual gaming. CPU- Same as GPU. I'm tempted but worried that even a "great deal" can net me with a heavily abused component. Unlikely to buy used for this. Below is what I'm looking at right now. https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Processor-Wraith-Stealth-Cooler/dp/B07B41WS48 Motherboard- Definitely new. Any advice for what criteria I should be looking for with gaming in mind? I'm aware of pcpartpicker to check for compatibility before I buy any components. Do cases need to be compatible though? Appreciate any help/ advice [link] [comments]
Building a media PC from old parts, need help. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:19 PM PST Hey everyone, im putting together a small form factor living room PC mainly for watching movies, netflix, youtube, etc. with old parts i had lying around. The specs are: • CPU: Intel i3-3220 with Intel HD2500 iGpu • MOBO: Asus P8H61-M LX3 R2.0 • GPU: Asus EN210 Silent (GeForce 210) • 2x2GB DDR3 1333mhz • 2.5" HDD 160gb • Cheap ass low profile case with 400w psu My problem is the GPU. Both of my options are crap, im well aware, but according to UserBenchmark, the Intel HD2500 performs 70% better than the GeForce 210 (that has problems with something as basic as full hd video). The iGpu is the obvious choice, but my MOBO has no HDMI ports and my TV has no VGA ports. Neither have DVI. What are my options to avoid using the much worse GeForce 210? Can i use both cards at the same time? Can i use the 210 as just a port while actually processing with the iGpu? Any and all help will be much appreciated! I wanted some feedback from the community on a current build I want to build. I would appreciate any feedback whether it be for peripherals or PC Parts, whatever your thoughts are. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kzY9pG [link] [comments] |
