2 second lag spikes every 5-6 minutes ever since my line was upgraded to fiber. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:16 AM PST I was on a 20mbps copper line that was perfectly fine for gaming, a couple of months ago the ISP upgraded my line to fiber and i bumped my package to 100 down / 10 up and while there is no issue with the speed or the ping i do get weird lag spikes consistently every 5-6 minutes that causes my online games to lag/freeze for 1-2 seconds max then it works fine. This is specially noticeable in Fifa on PS4 because the game just freezes you completely then it speeds up greatly to catch up, at first i thought it was Fifa servers but when i tried to play on my backup 2mb connection this lag never happened. I could also notice this in twitch streams and while playing battlefield. My main issue is that i don't know how to explain it to my ISP as i don't know how to track it or where the problem may be, every time i open a ticket with my ISP they say there is nothing wrong with my connection as the line stats look fine and i am getting the speed i am subscribed for. Can someone advise on how to troubleshoot such issue? [link] [comments] |
sagecom fast 5260 versus netgear n6300 Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:29 PM PST Hey everybody. We have spectrum and the router they gave us is the sagecom. My room is maybe 100 feet away from the router and Ive noticed that my connection to the 5g drops a decent amount. I have a n6300 router laying around that Im thinking about using instead. Does anybody have any experience, advice or knowledge between the two ? Thank you so much ! [link] [comments] |
Senior parents paying $300/mo for tv/net/phone Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:54 AM PST Mom and dad are getting 🔩 by cable company. They live in a condo, and the only available ISP that I am aware of is Cox Cable. We have one other company, ATT, who says they don't have lines in the area, which is patently ridiculous, this is in the shopping district of town. So they are paying $300/mo as follows, and I'm trying to save them $$, because that seems riddic. They have 100Mbps, and 3 premium channel packages....I am trying to drop their phone service since it really is unnecessary, as they have a phone. Every downgrade cost extra. Wtf. My mom uses 10Mbps, if even. My mom isn't really big on gaming (/s), and she is paying for 100Mbps ($80/mo). If I switch her to 30Mbps, it'll cost an extra $9 per month. Wt literal f. My mom is paying more for ID network than I spend on groceries. I'm trying to help my disabled (and dino brained) mom save some $, but I'm guessing it's $300 or the dark ages for mom. Any alternative suggestions? Thanks for reading, hope this helps someone maybe [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:41 PM PST This is my final call for help. I've exhausted everything I know on network troubleshooting, which, admittedly, isn't a whole lot, but more than most folk. Here's my trouble: I have a Netgear X4S that I bought two years ago (October 2016). I love the thing, but I feel like it might be dying, which is pretty upsetting given the cost of the unit and the fact that it's barely been two years. The kicker, though, is that almost everything works like it did day one. Almost. For some reason, I am experiencing extreme packet loss, constantly, no matter what I'm doing, how many people are using the network, etc. I have an old Arris CM820A modem that I've been using reliably for years. If I plug directly into that, no packet loss whatsoever, so I don't think I can blame my ISP. Connected to my X4S, I'm getting a minimum of 35% loss regardless of host. My method is simply using Windows CMD to ping google (or whatever host, I tried my webserver too) 30-100 times. I'm really at a loss here. The warranty has expired, so Netgear won't do a thing about it, and justifying buying another high-capacity router is difficult. I have a lot of devices doing a lot of stuff on my network pretty regularly, and this thing has served them better than any router I've ever owned, and I've gone through quite a few. I started to notice this issue when my roommate moved in a couple months ago (maybe after that, I haven't really been cataloging it)-- every time we'd try to play a game with our friend who lives across town, we'd have a lot of trouble with rubber-banding for the first 25 minutes or so, then it would subside and stabilize for the entirety of the session. I figured it was our friend's connection, because it's never been great, but I appear to be incorrect. I'll also mention that every once in a while (maybe once every two or three weeks), I could hear a high-pitched whine coming from inside the X4S, like a bad capacitor whine. Reset the thing, goes away for a few weeks. Haven't heard it for a while. Have been concerned about that for some time. Over the past couple days though, we've been trying to play Battlefield V, and it would go smoothly for me solo, and smooth for him (my roommate) solo, but if we tried to play together, we'd get spikes of 500+ ping and rubberband all over the place. I thought it must the powerline. Got rid of that, no dice. Must be something with the router, so I updated the firmware (from 1.0.2.58 to .60) and modified the QoS settings to prioritize our machines. Now it's worse. Even solo, my ping is fine. Download speeds are what my package offers, barely any jitter, everything seems fine. However, just sitting here right now, doing nothing with no other devices connected, I'm getting 40-50% packet loss to any host. Again, hardwired to the modem, it's gone. I can't blame my PC or the modem. I've also tried packet tests from my laptop as well as my phone. I reset the router. I factory defaulted everything. I rolled back to .58. I reset it again. I updated back to .60. QoS on, QoS off, WMM on, off, Nothing has changed. Is my shiny internet spaceship already breathing its final breaths? (also my connection dropped entirely while I was writing this). [link] [comments] |
PC to Router to Modem has slow upload speed Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:27 PM PST As per title stated, I am getting low Upload speed (I should range around 35mbps), I average about 2 mbps. My Download speed is good, it stays at 100mbps, and this is via my new Asus Blue Cave router. If I were to connect to my Modem (ARIS Surfboard DOCSIS 3.0) directly to my computer, I am getting 100mbps Down, and 25mbps Up. This makes me think that it is my router altogether. I have researched and found that if you have QoS enabled, you can either have set the upload speed higher, so it doesn't throttle, or disable QoS altogether. I have performed both without any success. My Upload remains at 2 mbps. I have Optimum Internet. I have done Power Cycles, but I am at a loss on how I can up the speed. [link] [comments] |
Just moved into a condo that provides internet and cable, do I still need a modem? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:05 AM PST I just moved into a condo and when I plug my computer directly into the Ethernet port, I get internet service. It seems to me that since I am already getting internet through the port directly, I would only need a router to support multiple devices. Is this correct? I searched for similar posts already and couldn't find any that matched my situation. [link] [comments] |
want to torrent and host plex on same pc. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:56 PM PST would the best way to do this to run the torrents in a vm with the vpn so that i can still access the drives easily through the home network? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:41 PM PST The apartment I am in owns the network for the building I am in, and I do not have access to change any routing configurations besides on my machines. . The issue is that my desktop is on wired: Wired subnet: 10.0.104.0/21 . And my laptop is on wireless (doesn't have to be, but this is most convenient): Wireless subnet: 10.0.232.0 . Without access to the router or DHCP, am I SOL if I ever want to be able to connect (ping, ssh, anything at all) my laptop to my desktop? I'm not opposed to buying a little apartment AP and just doing it that way so that I manage things within my LAN, but if there is a way that this can be configured in iptables for both (linux) machines, I would prefer that. 100Mb ATT Fiber vs 300mb Cox Cable Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:24 PM PST Hi, At&t recently added 100mb fiber lines in my area. So now I'm am trying to decide between paying $100 for 300mb with Cox, or switching to AT 100mb for $50. I am a gamer and enjoy my 4k streaming content. I have a nice Arris Surfboard modem and a nice Asus Router that has provided pretty great speeds and reliability so far. My biggest factor here is latency. On average I get usually around 30ms, and frequently it will go up to 60-70ms in COD or Battlefield. Is fiber going to be better or worse than that Will the speeds be reliable? I currently pay for 300mbps so that at least most devices lan or 5ghz wifi can get upwards of 200. In general I have never trusted att to provide reliable service. The guy even said that my neighborhood is older and they dont have all the stuff down for the real higher fiber options. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:41 PM PST So I just purchased my first house and I'm moving in on the 7th. I ordered Verizon Fios Gigabit + TV. I opted out of the provided router for some reason assuming I could set up the account myself. After doing some research and seeing a ton of options and not quite understanding what all this terminology stands for I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Should I just order the Verizon one? Or can someone suggest to me something in layman terms what I need to set everything up. Would going to best buy and asking them for help be a better bet? Any info would be appreciated. I will try to answer any questions ASAP. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:03 PM PST I have a few devices in my LAN that I want access to from outside, including a Raspberry Pi and the router itself. I've set up OpenVPN on my Asus RT-N66U using the default settings, and exported the profile to my Android's OpenVPN client. I can connect successfully, but pages in Chrome load extremely slow. Even something simple like navigating to the router's configuration page takes maybe 30-60 seconds. It's not really usable. My current network and the home network are both very fast connections on up and down so there's definitely not a bandwidth issue, and my ping to the router or other LAN devices when connected is acceptable, it just seems to be the loading of pages in Chrome that's problematic. Any ideas on what to check to resolve? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:55 PM PST So I got all of this gear from a recycling program. Everything works. I only have an office of 5 people I want to set up for. Pretty sure I don't need most of the switches. We don't have to pay for power. I have: 24U Enclosed Server rack. 2 Cisco 1900 1 Cisco 1800 1 Cisco 5500 wireless controller 10 ruckus ap with no zone director for them 1 Linksys unmanaged 24 port 1-gigabit 6 different Allied Telesis Layer 3 gigabit switches. 1 HP G6 What would be the best use of the hp server since they all work on MacBook Pro stations. The HP G6 has 2 Xeon E5520 Quad-core 2.26GHz/8MB and only 16 gb or ram atm. Along with 4 144 gb SAS drives and 1 2 Tb sata drives. I'm open to investing in more hard drive space in the near future. Are the 2.5" drive worth the cost different for mass media storage or would 3.5" drives be smarter to just invest in with a nas? I'm somewhat overwhelmed atm and am thinking I'll need to recycle alot of the gear. Any recommendations or guidance would be much appreciated. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:35 PM PST I've searched the r/HomeNetworking sub a lot and can't get a clear recommendation. On my network, I'm running: Xbox one (wired) Another Xbox one (wireless) PS4 (wired) Nintendo Switch (wireless) A Samsung tv Two iPhone XS's Two iPads (wireless N) three laptops (wireless N and AC) Desktop computer (AC) One wireless printer (wireless g) Occasional guest devices We recently upgraded from Iphone 6S's to XS's and now our network drops our phone connections constantly. I'm guessing we are overloading the N network since I'm assuming that the XS's revert back to wireless N when there is no AC available. ...my laptop, also wireless N, also seems to be disconnecting often now. All this starting after bringing the two iPhone XS's into the house. I'm currently running an old Linksys EA4500 Wireless N router https://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Wireless-Dual-Band-Anywhere-EA4500/dp/B007IL7AKM/ref=pd_sim_147_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B007IL7AKM&pd_rd_r=dad66d31-f775-11e8-b2dc-77989321c28c&pd_rd_w=nVer3&pd_rd_wg=MnDaG&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=F8H5K6BK2ZYYWQYX403Z&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=F8H5K6BK2ZYYWQYX403Z I have a few questions, and I would appreciate any help.
I am currently considering the Linksys EA 5400. https://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Max-Stream-EA9500-802-11ac-Ethernet-x/dp/B017NT8Q24/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1543894760&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=Linksys+Max-Stream+AC5400&psc=1 I would like to keep the price below $200, but I could go up to $300ish (thte EA 5400) if necessary. I want a rock solid router that I don't have to reset all the time. Note: Amazon is running a deal on the D-Link EXO AC2600 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Router for the next four hours... the description says it has QoS and MU-MIMO support. https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-AC2600-MU-MIMO-Wi-Fi-Router/dp/B0711TPTZL/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1543894779&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=Linksys+Max-Stream+AC5400&psc=1 Thanks in advance. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:22 PM PST I have RCN gig service and am receiving the following errors on my modem. Can anyone explain them to me? RCN and Arris both can't. They come up numerous times a day on my modem and I am not sure who or if I should reach out to in order to get them corrected. Notice - "TLV-11 - unrecognized OID;CM-MAC= ( I left the rest out for privacy because they are MAC addresses.) Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:52 PM PST Hi everyone, I tried googling it but I couldn't figure out what terms to google for the answer I wanted. 1) can I use Ethernet and WiFi simultaneously but I only need Ethernet to make a small local network between pc—> switch (which has 2 Unifi cameras attached). 2) while Ethernet is transmitting, use WiFi to connect to the internet/broader LAN if anyone wants to use live view at home or away using the UBNT Unifi NVR software (video.ubnt.com). I know WiFi isn't ideal for a situation like this but for the time being, I'm going with this until I route Ethernet wire from garage to crawl space up to the attic down to the router / bedroom. Can you link me or explain how to set up a local network for the Unifi cameras? Some ONVIF cameras had how-tos for this but they seemed to have browser based configurations. I'm not sure if UBNT Unifi cameras have this / how to do it but also have it work with the PC NVR software. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Help on my build out - recently wired house with cat6 Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:32 PM PST Hello, After a few years of wanting to run a wired network, I finally found a contractor that would do residential at a decent price. I dropped ~3 cables per room + HDMI totaling 16 runs (3 for outside cameras). Looking for recommendations to further my home build. No specific wants at the moment, trying to build a foundation for my network now every room has drops. What I have currently: HomeLab - 2 Cisco switches, 1 Cisco router, 1 ProCurve switch, 1 Dell R710 Server. NAS - Synology DS218+ diskstation 1 IP Poe Cam (Amazon special that is phoning home - better recommendations welcome) What I am looking to get: Router - Ubiquiti maybe? Cant decide, but wanting to dump my ISPs router and use it as bridge only. ASA/Firewall if the router isn't sufficient, or to lab with. PoE switch with at least 4-6 access ports (1 WAP, 3 Cams) 24 port fanless switch that supports VLANs WAP that supports ~ 1500sqft IP phone Thanks [link] [comments] |
New homeowner trying to do home networking Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:29 PM PST Hello all, Firs time homeowner here. Trying to solve networking in my home on my own and would like your help doing that. House is 4000 sqft (considering it large) which is pre-wired with cat 5 or cat5e I guess. The Cable box is in master closet(found it odd to see it in master closet, is it a norm?) on second floor. I have AT&T fiber installed under a bookshelf on main floor. The AT&T technician replaced the regular phone line with RJ45 socket so he can relay the internet connection to the modem in the master closet. What I am trying to do
Tools I need to accomplish this and would like your recommendation

Looking to replace my ISP-provided mode/router combo... Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:50 AM PST Hi guys, My ISP (Spectrum) has provided us with a modem/router combo that we've been using the last 4 years. It's been ok, but not great... so looking to replace. Our cable line comes into our basement, so the range up to the second floor is just ok. I'm at the point where I think I want to replace with a modem and then a router (not a combo). I was looking at the Arris Surfboard SB6183 which I've seen a few recommend... Also, Metronet (fiber) has buried the lines in my neighborhood, so I'm expecting them to be available soon... should I hold off until that happens? I'm looking to also use a router that can work with a reputable VPN. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Router for 600 or possibly 1000mbps Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:22 AM PST I'm moving to Texas and my apartment requires I used Grande for my ISP. According to their website they offer 1000Mbps, but it's not available in all areas (and also from what i read I might have to use their equipment for 1000mbps, I'll find out more in a few days). The next fastest is 600mbps. I'm looking for a 2in1 router/modem (I believe gateway is the correct term) that will cover a roughly 1300sq ft apartment, supports the desired speed, uses Docsis 3.1 (per https://mygrande.com/modems )and is the cheapest that fits the requirements. Port forwarding using both a modem/router and an additional router (for better WiFi coverage) Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:57 AM PST I have a Huawei HG630b modem/router that I was given by my local ISP which I have supplemented with a Netgear router to improve the quality of the Wi-Fi signal in my home. The Netgear router is set up in Router Mode (the Wi-Fi is turned off on the modem and I had to go through an extensive setup process to make the two work together) I have a desktop computer sitting beside the two which I want to use as a server (it's currently got Ubuntu Server 16.04 on it). I have a couple of questions.

Upgrading & Troubleshooting | Advice Needed Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:06 PM PST Hi everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read through my post and sorry if it's a bit long, I want to be as detailed as possible! We have a 100mb/s fiber optics connection runnig to our house by a local provider (Europe). They've provided a fiber receiver/modem that the fiber cable goes to. I tried finding the exact one, but no luck (lable is replaced with a local one without a device number or ID). The modem is a EPON ONU extremely similar to this one. On the router side of things, we have a TL-WR1043ND that's been running strong for around 3 years. It's got the latest officially available software and I've taken care of it. It's never been in a dusty/closed space and I've cleaned it up a couple of times. Moving on to the issue! Recently we've been getting random lag spikes in various video games (3-4 seconds long and then it's fine), my wife's phone gets randomlly dropped from the wi-fi (while everything else is working fine), our plex server stutters on 720p files (desktop is plenty powerful, no problem runnig a couple 4k streams on it). The devices connected to the router are a PC (wired, everything else is wireless), a laptop, two phones, a chomecast and occasionally two macbooks, but it's usually five devices at most. Attempting to get to the bottom of this, I cloned my routers MAC address and went full LAN mode to my desktop only, this was in an evening where I had lag spikes every 3 to 4 minutes and rebooted the entire network a couple of times, even reflash the OS of the router. Going full LAN resolved the issue (other than a very small hickup for maybe half a second, that only happened once in various LAN "mode" tests). This points to culprit being the router, seeing as it's quite old, only goes up to n, and isn't dual/tripple band to keep up with our "vast" array of devices. What are your thoughts on the above, is it the router, the ONU or any other reason that you can think of? I'm open to trying out any suggestions. This then took me to a very awesome place, where I read up quite a bit on the matter. However, all the recommended routers there are quite a bit above our budget. Ideally, we'd be able to spend around $60 for a new one. I initially took an interest in the Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 3, but the chineese only language is kind of a deal breaker. With all off the above in mind and knowing that our usecase will stay fairly same, might add a lightbulb or two, what would you reccomend for a router? Here's a screenshot of a speedtest done just now: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7850719271.png Would really appreciate your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:13 PM PST I have a Netgear R6400 that has been running for 2 years. A few months back, I set up a pfsense router and switched the R6400 over to AP mode. That's been working fine, except that I lost the guest network capability (I think installing DDWRT to get vlan support would let me do it again, but that's a different issue). A couple days ago, the 5ghz on the Netgear started flaking out. Sometimes devices can connect, but get no internet. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it'll disappear completely. I've rebooted the router and restarted the 5ghz radio, but no improvement. So now I'm in the market to replace it with an AP or two. My ideal list: 2.4 and 5ghz able to run with same SSIDs on both guest network ability (which I think needs vlan support and then configured in pfsense, but then also the ability for the AP to have multiple SSIDs) I don't currently have POE on my switches, and the main location I'd put one has electric available. I'd be running ethernet to a second location if I get a second AP, so a POE injector would be nice for it. If they require POE, I can always add an injector at my switch location. Probably neither would be ceiling mounted. The router currently sits on a table in our bedroom, so the AP would either go there or behind/under the table. I've seen the EAP225v3 suggested, and that's a decent price range. Is there any reason based on my setup NOT to go with it? Something better I should look at? How much would mounting it non-ceiling affect the coverage? [link] [comments] |
TP-Link Archer C7 Guest Network Bandwidth Control Not Working Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST Anyone else having problems using the Guest Network bandwidth control with this router? It is very inconsistent with me and most of the time doesn't work. Router is updated to latest firmware. Main network goes up to 100Mbps. I limit the Guest network to 20Mbps but usually still get the full speed of the Main. [link] [comments] |
