How do i create what i call "junctions" on Linux Ubuntu? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:23 AM PDT Hello! I migrated my laptop to Linux Mint a few months ago, and i am now considering migrating my Desktop (from windows), and am still deciding on the Distro i want to use, however i'll probably go with Ubuntu. In my computer, i have one SSD, and two HDD's. The SSD has 110 Gigs of storage space, and i have Windows installed on there for faster boot times. On Windows (for anyone that doesn't know), there is an app data folder, where windows stores various bits of information such as save games and temporary files. As time passed however, and i installed more and more video games, even when installing the video games to one of the HDD's, the app data folder (which is stored on the SSD) slowly filled up more and more, until the SSD was almost full. I eventually came to a solution, which i call a "junction" or a "bridge". I put that in quotes because I'm not sure if that's the correct terminology to be using. Basically, the bridge or junction allows me to create shortcuts for folders. What this means is that i can move folders inside App data to one of my HDD's, and create a "shortcut" in the app data folder leading to that folder. That way, video games can still access their saves and configs as if they were in the actual app data location, while they are still stored on one of the HDD's. Of course this has issues, for example if one of the HDD's failed, then applications would no longer be able to find the folder. Regardless, i was wondering if anyone knew if this was possible to do on Linux? Is there something i can install to accomplish this? Thanks if anyone can help! [link] [comments] |
Screen Tear Fix Distroyed My Browsers. Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:56 AM PDT I wanted to watch Vikings on Netflix. That is all. I noticed extreme diagonal and horizontal screen tearing. On my old Dell Latitude 3550 with Until Core i3 and originally came with Windows 7 but could not handle windows 8 and 10. Using Xubuntu. I tried a 3 command fix someone suggested for Intel processors and rebooted, but now my browsers don't work. Not Firefox, not the standard one that is just called web browser. It opens on a blank page. I can type something and it doesn't show up. The window title changed when K press enter bit nothing other does. Still just a blank screen with an empty search box. I just wanted to watch show recommended by my dad. I had to go on my phone yo ask because no browser works on the Laptop. Is this where I give up and kill off the old and tired PC or Is there a fix? Edit: Forgot to mention my laptop got it's HDD replaced with an SSD some years ago if that info is needed. [link] [comments] |
Increased battery drain during suspend on Fedora since kernel 5.12.4 Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:39 AM PDT Hello, since I've updated my laptop to kernel 5.13.4, I've been experiencing increased power drain during suspend - from roughly 0.4-0.6%/h to ~1%/h which is roughly double the consumption. I was using kernel 5.12.15 before and was having amazing battery life with it. My question is: Is there a way to reduce power drain on kernel 5.13.4 or should I downgrade to the older 5.12.15? And if it's the second option, how would I do that? I would really appreciate any help and thanks in advance. EDIT: I also experience occasional bluetooth dysfunction that can only be fixed by a reboot. None of the commands online help. Also, I don't have the older kernel because I had deleted it accidentally. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet doesn't work after suspension Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:15 AM PDT If I let my Endeavour OS system suspend/fall asleep, I no longer have internet upon logging in. I have to do a full reboot of my computer, then it works again. My Network Manager says I have an active "wired connection 1" for my ethernet, but all I get is a loading circle icon in place of my usual network manager dashboard icon. I've tried making a .service file for systemd that I found on askubuntu, but it didn't do anything. Anyone know what's up with this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Format partition as ef3, yet cannot see/select it during installation? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:52 AM PDT Hi Everyone, I created a new partition in the format as ef3 in preparation for installing an Ubuntu installation, yet I cannot select/see the 40GB partition I created, and a 'root drive'? Changing user's primary group doesn't add them to that group? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 10:01 AM PDT For an assignment, I'm creating new users which have to have a particular group as primary group and have to belong to that group. So far I've been creating the user with useradd, changing primary group with usermod. Until this step, the /etc/passwd file shows that the primary group ID has been correctly changed. But in the /etc/group file, this user doesn't show up as a member of that group. So far, I've been manually adding them to their group with the usermod -aG command, but it's an additional step and should have been unnecessary since they already have that group assigned as primary group. So is a user's primary group id separate from the user actually being in that group? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:59 AM PDT I wouldn't consider myself a Linux noob. ( Using since 2005 ) However I have never heard a definite answer on the when and why to restart a Linux box. My family desktop gets rebooted maybe once every 3 months. Whats y'all's cycle and why? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jul 2021 01:50 AM PDT The "Explore" tab loads properly for both. "Installed" is just empty. "Updates" says "Software is up to date" I'm behind a proxy server at work running Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell desktop. Of note, when I open the "Software & Updates" app then click on the "Livepatch" tab, it tells me "Livepatch requires an internet connection." I've already configured and updated my proxy info in the terminal and under Settings -> Network. There it does show a working wired connection. I have been able to download software on the terminal without issues. [link] [comments] |
Installing Linux Distro as 'first' OS on Laptop. How do I do this? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:20 AM PDT Hi Everyone, The last week I have tried a dual-boot of Linux on Windows 10. I'm looking to do a 'Linux Challenge', testing myself to use only the Linux OS to see how I feel with it as my daily driver. My dilemma - my laptop came with Windows 10 pre-installed (no worry, I have made a Windows 10 Bootable USB to reformat when needed). However, how do I boot/reformat with only Linux? Kind Regards, Sean. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu on my old tablet, anything better? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 04:26 AM PDT I have an old tablet, like this: http://linxoutlet.co.uk/index.php?id_product=38&controller=product , it's a Linx 10B Tablet 10.1", Intel Atom Z3735G, 2GB RAM, 32GB eMMC I installed Ubuntu on it, and to be fair, it works ok. It's sluggish but that would be down to the age and poor specs. Since I dont' have a keyboard I'm just using touch and the inteface seems ok. I was wondering though, since I only use it for web browsing (Firefox) are there any recommendations for another OS that may give better performance while still providing the good touch functionality? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:30 AM PDT I had many issues with unmet dependencies, broken packages. As I am new to linux I was very frustrated. I did everything mentioned on forums but still nothing changed. Then I saw a possible solution someone proposed on a very unpopular forum. The solution was to just change download server. It worked for me, as the server for my country was just unbearable. [link] [comments] |
Laptop boots straight into windows and skips grub Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:30 AM PDT Just finished Arch install, grub installed on EFI with no errors and grub made config and detected everything without errors. Didn't happen in my previous laptop. Edit: I have checked my bios and the only thing other than window boot manager is uefi hard drive and even then if I put that above it still won't boot into grub Edit: solved [link] [comments] |
How to set up a VM of windows using my existing boot loader? Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:15 AM PDT I recently downloaded ubuntu about 6 days ago and I'm loving it, the only problem is a bunch of games I like to play don't support it properly due to anti-cheats and whatnot. I am dual booting ubuntu 21.04 and windows 10 pro 21h2 (i think). Is there a way to set up a VM which uses my existing boot loader? because I hate constantly rebooting my pc so I can chill with friends and then back to general use. something that could either make this a lot easier or harder to do is the fact that Ubuntu is installed on a secondary drive and windows is installed on my original drive. any help is appreciated! Same button keeps getting pressed after letting go + some inputs wont register Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:52 AM PDT Running ubunutu 20.10 off a laptop with an i7 and integrated graphics (can't get my MX250 to work). Half the time when I'm playing games and doing stuff either a button I pressed keeps getting pushed whenever I let go OR a button I press simply won't do anything (generally when I'm pressing a lot of stuff). For example, when I crouchjump while going forward in TF2 (w+ctrl+jump), it won't let me shoot my weapon to rocket jump (mouse 1). If it matters, I'm using the system's keyboard and a USB mouse.
