Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:55 AM PDT My dad asked me to learn how to make device drivers on my ubuntu computer, I have basic knowledge of simple commands, how to use files and directories and I know how to write in c based languages and in c(as a novice). What things should I learn and look into before starting to learn making device drivers? [link] [comments] |

Is it normal to have firefox/tor using full GPU power? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:43 AM PDT Compared to chromium, firefox seems to work like a browser would with hardware acceleration turned off. Except it is using the GPU, which hits 80% or more usage when playing a youtube video. Hitting 60ºC just for scrolling through video subreddits On windows this doesn't happen, except that it seems that firefox will use more VRAM than Chromium browsers. This has happened on any distro I tried: POP, ubuntu, fedora Worthy mentioning that I'm using 4K resolution and a GTX 1060 I thought it was a driver issue, but POP! comes with native support for NVIDIA Drivers Is this a normal behavior? I tried searching for a solution, but most questions on stackoverflow are different bugs, not related to 4k lag on firefox. And if it is not a normal behavior, should I report/try to get support with this bug from who ? Nvidia? Firefox developers? [link] [comments] |
Program to control Monitor Brightness (Desktop) ? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:04 PM PDT Hello penguin army, I've been using Linux (Arch btw) for a few months now and never had any luck finding a software to control / change my monitor brightness (not night color or anything like that). I'm looking for something similar to what ClickMonitorDDC does on Windoze machines for example. The Backlight page alternatives on the Arch Wiki don't seem to work very well for me and I know for a fact that many DE's offer this option for laptops (usually in the battery icon or brightness settings) but they simply won't appear or won't work in Desktop setups...what can I do about it? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:10 AM PDT It says in my settings that it is a recovery partition or something. [link] [comments] |
Installing Linux on External SSD Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:48 PM PDT Currently, I am using Asus TUF A15 Gaming Laptop with windows 10 and I don't want to mess up with Windows OS. So, I researched and decided to install Linux in External SSD and I wanted to know that is it convenient?

Will need to know Linux for university, not sure which distro is best Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:34 AM PDT Hi all, According to the course materials for my university there will be an emphasis on Linux when I go in September, however the university will not say which distro we will be using, or even if it will be rpm or deb based. I know the very basic of deb and I am able to update the system, make directories and change things with nano, but I would like a greater understanding so that I am more prepared, without a specific purpose I find myself clicking around the GUI and just using "man" on everything. I have taken the Linux Distro quiz from the FAQ and it has suggested:
as the top three however each is not recommended for beginners, but I feel being thrown into the deep end may be a good way to learn. I plan to use Linux in a virtual machine, rather than replace Windows as my main OS but I feel this is somewhat limited as I do not have a reason to use the VM, I can login and move around but I never find a reason or task that requires me to have knowledge of the system. Do you guys know of a good distro for a beginner who's purpose is to learn Linux and its commands, preferably with a goal or something to work towards in order to learn? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:47 AM PDT Hey guys, so I basically just came back to Pop_OS (21.04) after a year or two, since I had used it a bit before and really liked it back then (I'm still mainly a windows user). I installed it on my laptop which I barely use and usually serves as a guinea pig for OS's, since university is remote right now, so I do everything from my desktop. Now the thing is, I remember back then I had a lot of trouble with the thermals and fans of my Laptop (Lenovo T490 - i7 8565u Nvidia MX 250) and I just noticed it got pretty hot again. I had windows installed for a while but as I didn't really use it I have no clue how the fans worked with Windows. My question is: Do I have to worry about my laptop overheating or does Linux have safety measures for it and are there easier to use applications now, that help me control my fans so they neither work too hard or make my computer overheat? Thanks a lot in advance! :=) [link] [comments] |
[Q] Is there a way to "force" WINE to lock the mouse? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:34 AM PDT Hi, I'm using X11 and got FL Studio to work properly on linux, except 1 thing, when I try to scroll some sliders, the mouse goes off screen (exits wine) and makes working very hard in FL, is there any fix for this? Unusual auto generated fstab (Fedora) Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:28 AM PDT When I did some changes to my fstab today, I noticed that the home and root entries didn't specify the UUID, but /dev/mapper/luks... On my other machines and previous installs all entries always where using the UUID (both encrypted). Is that normal or does anyone know what happened here? Used the same installation medium as on the other Computer. [link] [comments] |
In search for a linux guide for noobs Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:10 AM PDT hello dear redditors of r/linux4noobs, I installed and tried to learn linux when i was 13, i learned the very noob-ish basics, I forgot almost everything that I learnt about linux. I'm a very impatient person when it comes to learning, really would love suggestions of videos and articles that are straight to the point. TIA [link] [comments] |

Difficulty bridging PulseAudio to JACK Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:24 AM PDT In Cadence, I can start JACK without any errors but when I attempt to click start in the PulseAudio tab under JACK Bridges, nothing happens and I get the following output from Cadence. Not sure if this is related but just in case, I can open Catia through Cadence but the window just stays black, and Cadence outputs this. [link] [comments] |
