Port Security and Traffic Prioritization Advice Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:43 PM PDT Is there any way to set any kind of manual port security (disable/enable ports) or traffic prioritization on a home network that has one router as a gateway, an internal DNS server and multiple unmanaged Trendnet Greennet switches? Home Networking Setup Question from an amateur Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT So I'm currently constructing a house that will have one CAT6 drop in each room. Obviously some rooms will require more than one port. I'm not quite sure what that will consist of. I'm thinking an Ethernet switch (probably Ubiquity from my research) in the rooms that need it that feed into another Ethernet switch that's connected to my modem. It seems…too easy and I feel like there must be something I'm missing so I'm looking for some advice since I have 0 networking experience outside of typing in a Wi-Fi passcode up to this point. Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:33 AM PDT So I'm moving into my first apartment post grad, there is a Verizon ONT so I purchased service. I didn't want to pay for the router rental so I am going to buy my own, however, I haven't found many instruction guides on starting service fresh with your own router for Fios (googling/side bar/old posts). Would the instructions come with the router? [link] [comments] |
Help with Kemp Load Balance subVS not resolving Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:14 PM PDT Hi All, I am looking to get help with a new Kemp LoadMaster configuration. I am setting up a VIP with subVS, I have set up my VIP to connect on port 443, and am creating a SubVS for each service. On the SubVS if I setup the protocol as HTTPS, the VIP will show the subVS as down, and it will only work when I change the Real server check method back from HTTPS to HTTP protocol. Each subVS have their real server configured on the back-end and they work normally when I browse to their IP address without any problem. But When I try to access through the VIP address the NAT is going through and I am getting a Secure Connection Failed. The only way I can access the server setup behind the VIP address is using http://<VIP ADDRESS>:443 Anyone have any idea or have dealt with this issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:13 PM PDT I have a homelab set up where I practice throwing exploits at vulnerable hosts. I don't want this lab to be able to interact with my home network, so I got a managed switch so I can segment the network into VLANs. I want both VLANs to have internet access, but I do not want them to be able to communicate with each other. The switch I have is a SG300-20 which has L2 and L3 mode. From what I have read, I've gathered I need to run it in L3 mode but I am having trouble understanding just how to configure it. I think I will need to configure my router as well? It is an old Dell Optiplex with a dual interface nic running pfSense. I threw together this diagram of what I am going for and how everything above the switch is set up for now. Any help with this would be really appreciated [link] [comments] |
Options for bettering 2G Wifi Connection? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:07 PM PDT So I have a doorbell camera on my gate in the front of my house about 20 feet away but its connection is really weak. The door camera barely opens a preview What are my options for bettering the connection? Its already almost at my front doorway Will a better router do the job? I have a netgear R6300v2 router right now. thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
*NOVICE* TP-Link Omada & Eero Mesh Router Setup Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:03 PM PDT Hey there, I'm trying to setup a basic home network with several smart home devices and a vpn installed on the router. I have: Motorola Docsis 3.1 Cable Modem TP-LINK Omada Gigabit VPN Router Eero Pro Mesh Wifi - 3 Pack I'll explain what I'm trying to do. I want to create a smart home network using Apple's Home Kit. Which is why I chose to go with the Eero Mesh Wi-fi Router (It's homekit enabled). I also wanted to install a VPN on the router itself - But the eero doesn't have that capability. I consulted r/eero and they let me know that you can use another router to install the vpn on. Then you can install the eero normally in bridge mode. This is why I bought the TP-Link Omada Router..... Now I might be a super noob here. But I can't even get it to become a viewable network device on anything in my home. What do I do? Need help using G3100 as router on xfinity Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:01 PM PDT I recently moved and switched from Fios to Xfinity. I want to use a Verizon G3100 router which I already own to save on money in my new house with Xfinity. The Netgear CM700 modem I purchased separately is currently working with Xfinity, and lets me connect to the internet via ethernet cable, which is how I'm posting this now. The problem is that when I try to plug in that ethernet cable into the G3100's WAN port, the router does not connect to the internet. I've been trying for hours to figure this out and have found no definitive answers. The CM700 instructions make it seem that I should be fine to just plug the ethernet output into a router and have it work. Clearly I'm not having luck. The instructions of Verizon's router mention nothing of the sort on using an ethernet input instead of a broadband input, but I'm definitely not knowledgeable enough to know if there would be a difference, or how I could change any relevant settings in the G3100. I appreciate any suggestions and pointers! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Wired connection between buildings Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:08 PM PDT Hello all, I've searched all over with various keywords but haven't really found the right solution. As background, I know enough about electrical circuits and networking to be more than an amateur, but only marginally so. I just purchased my childhood home and want to really update the home network situation. Have a crawl space under the house and my father had previously pulled multiple runs of coax to various rooms in the house that I can use to trade for cat 6 cable. That's easy, and I can plop in a switch and manage it with a little internet help. What is really getting me is the access point I'd like to put in the garage (or maybe even an exterior one that sits outside the garage and points towards the back yard; I have ½ acre of land). The garage is detached, but only by about 5 feet. Between the houses are a couple of metal conduits for electrical (which was upgraded to code in 2015 or so for an idiotic sum of money, including multiple new grounding rods all over the place). The conduits penetrate the wall of the garage, with appropriate sealing around the hole on the exterior. What I'd like, of course, is to have a wired connection between the house and the access point. Underground is simply not possible (at least not without cutting into the concrete for a very long distance, including into the garage). Thus, I'm sort of left with running it aerial. I know there is outdoor rated ethernet cable, but I'm worried about noise from the electrical wiring if I tie it to the existing conduit. I would consider fiber, but I have very limited functional knowledge about it and don't know if this is worth the investment in cable, connectors, converters, etc. I'd really love PoE at the AP end to reduce the need for power cable as well. Overall run is about And point-to-point wireless is not an option due to inadequate line of sight. Trees galore that I refuse to cut for this purpose. Hope this makes sense, and I appreciate any and all input. Sorry in advance if this was answered in a different post. [link] [comments] |
Routing all traffic through my home network Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:17 PM PDT Might seem like a weird request but I'm interested in setting up a proxy so that all my data on my laptop/mobile devices are routed through my home internet. I know my data would still be visible to my ISP but I would like to specifically avoid having the public wifi I'm using able to access any information. Any thoughts on this? I'm on Fiber at home so I have plenty of speed to handle the in/out traffic. I have an always on PC as well but could get a NAS or similar device to handle that traffic too if it would make more sense. [link] [comments] |
ZenWiFi AX intranet connection problems Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:54 PM PDT I'm having intranet connection problems with a 3-node ZenWiFi AX mesh setup and was wondering if anyone could suggest options for diagnosing and correcting the problem. The problem is frequent but intermittent and involves network errors or long delays when accessing devices within my home network. The most noticeable problems are with a QNAP data server (hardwired to a ZenWiFi router) and an HP printer/scanner (WiFi only):
Internet connections for laptops and phones on my network are generally fast and stable, so this problem seems to be limited to connections solely within my home network. I'm not even really sure where to begin diagnosing the cause. All I've come up with so far is an anecdotal observation that things seem to work better right after I optimize the ZenWiFi mesh using the Asus router app. WiFi signal strength is great and I live in a low-density area so I don't think interference is an issue. Any thoughts on what might be causing the problem, or at least things to look for? Thanks in advance for any ideas... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:32 PM PDT The router is on the 2nd floor because of access points and the above mentioned is on the 1st floor. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
PC keeps getting kicked off the wifi network after installing new router Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:17 PM PDT Hello. My family and I recently got a new router through our internet provider, Optimum, to replace our old one. It is a Ubee UBC1322. At first, I was very happy with it as my download speeds are almost three times as fast as they were with the old router. However, I will now occasionally struggle to maintain a stable connection to the wifi network on my desktop computer. No other device in the household has this issue. To connect to the wifi network, I use a TP-Link AC1300 wireless PCIE card. Connecting to the network via ethernet is not currently an option for me. This issue only began after I installed the new router, so I do not think that the wifi card is the issue. Whenever I had a wifi issue with the previous router, I would simply switch from the 2.4ghz network to the 5ghz or vice versa. However, this new router only has one network and supposedly chooses the best one for me without me having to switch back and forth. I'm thinking this may be the source of the issue, but I am not sure where to go from here. [link] [comments] |
Was redirected to 0.0.0.132 while on website Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:00 PM PDT I was playing and browser game and was redirected to https:// 0.0.0.132, which did not connect as it's not a public address. Note that this was not on page load, the site had been up and running just fine for a while. I figure this is a network related issue as the address is local, so maybe something on the router caused the redirect. I've asked around a bit already, but I'm not completely satisficed with the information I have gotten. I've learned from r techsupport, that 0.0.0.132 is not a valid publicly routable IP address. I found the Wikipedia article for 0.0.0.0, a similar address. Also, the site I was on did not have any odd code ( https:// jacorb90.me/DistInc.github.io/main.html ). However, I'm still puzzled by what would cause such a redirect. I wasn't interacting with the page at the time, it was on a completely different screen. A few questions that come to mind:
This is just a particularly odd occurrence, as I've never seen something like this. I've seen legit sites redirect due to bad ads and blank pages even, but I've never seen a website redirect to a local IP address. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:47 AM PDT So the cable wouldn't fit for whatever reason, i stripped the lesser jacket off the cable to make it fit. Clamped it, internet works. They don't and can't touch, I removed just the very end to make it fit. Now I was told this is a major fuckup and I should do it again? How bad can it be? [link] [comments] |
Why are my wifi speeds slower than before? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:37 PM PDT A few months ago my wifi speed were easily 5-10mbs and even touching 13 mbs sometimes. But now i can't even 5mbs, most of the time only around less than 1mbs. What has happened? How can i possibly fix this? [link] [comments] |
Limiting bandwidth to a single IP address with a router that doesn't inherently support it? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:33 PM PDT I've got an ASUS Lyra setup throughout my housing facility to give occupants free internet connection. However some occupants exploit my good will and blast torrents/4k youtube to kingdom come, making it practically impossible for other occupants to use internet or for me to do any real work or even watch a Netflix flick without stuttering/do a game of League or a dungeon in WoW. My setup is basically as follows : Internet => ISP issued router (provides WiFi for my place) => Ethernet cable that runs down to the lowest floor of the building => Asus Lyra mesh network (5nodes) The Mesh network has 2.4 and 5ghz wifi and basically has unlimited access to internet bandwidth. My question is, is there a way to limit Lyra's bandwith offered to ALL occupants, not just per-case basis (I can open admin panel and limit bandwidth for individual devices, not do a blanket "this system has 2mbit up/2mbit down, distribute it across all users"). I've got a Mikrotik hAP AC lite laying around in a drawer somewhere, been planning on using it to give my apartment 5ghz wifi, maybe I can kill two birds with one stone (connect it to ISP issued router, connect the ASUS Lyra mesh to the mikrotik?). How would I go and configure it so it actually doesn't break anything for my occupants, and how would I limit the bandwidth given to the ethernet jack that ASUS Mesh is connected to? Basically could the Mikrotik just work as a WIFI point + network switch (just with added functionality of reducing bandwidth given to the ASUS Lyra network)? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
EAP245 Signal strength on desk Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:17 PM PDT So I bought a mikrotik router and a EAP245 AP to replace my spectrum router. Everything is working now but i found the signal strength of the EAP245 to not reach as far on the other side of my house(both 5g and 2g). both the range and speeds are slower compared to the spectrum router when I go to the back. It's currently sitting on my desk in the office in the front part of the house, does it have to be ceiling mounted for it to work better? Feels like it has more to do with it's ability with penetrating through the walls though. [link] [comments] |
Trying to increase speed/connectivity Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:13 PM PDT Hi All, I'm at a bit of a loss here. I currently live in large apartment building. I have Xfinity 800mbps internet. I know I'm never going to get speeds like that over wifi, but I think I can do better than what I am now. I have a NetGear C6300 router/modem that I've had for about 3 years. Today in an effort to improve speeds I purchased a new Netgear C7000. I figure by moving to a 24x8 I can help with bandwidth usage as I have multiple smart devices/consoles/tvs throughout my apartment. Not to mention multiple laptops/computers. I have recently been experiencing slowdowns/connection issues when on zoom calls for work. To my surprise when I switched from the C7000 my internet speeds dropped to the 100-150mbps range. When I went back to my old C6300 I was getting speeds around 225-250mbps. I was really shocked that the new device without anything connected to it beyond my phone would be showing dramatically slower speeds. Does anyone have any ideas/advice for what I can do here. I wish I could run a wired connection in my office, but there isn't a functioning coax in that room, and I'm not too keen on running a super long ethernet. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Can't stream to twitch and PingPlotter help Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:57 PM PDT Hello, I'm having a hard time trying to stream on twitch (even youtube) and gave pingplotter a try: https://imgur.com/a/hhobMkm I only have my ISP modem/router in the network Looks like i have a problem in the first(modem/router) and third hop right? Anyone has any idea what the 3rd hop can be? I already have a ticket open against my ISP on the departament that regulates internet and phone from my county and they already talked to me and saw the problems and are going to call me again tomorrow so i just want i little bit more info to give them. Checking if any other devices have connected to my powerline [TP-LINK AV600] Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:00 PM PDT I've been trying to secure my network since i live in an apartment and im unsure if my circuits connect to other apartment circuits. I used the utility tool and it only shows the modules I've bought. I wanted to make sure though and want to see if I can find a type of back log. My main concern is by my Google Mini since it had randomly started playing music today and it usually doesn't do that so I just want to flush out any possible issues. I'm 99.9% sure it's not on guest mode. If anyone has info on this issue as well, inform me. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet ports dead around new apartment. Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT Hi everybody, I moved into a new apartment a few months ago, and only one Ethernet port is active for the router to be plugged into. Unfortunately this Ethernet port is not near my home office, however there is a dead Ethernet port close to my desk. I currently have a giant Ethernet cord running through the unit, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this? Also, in the closet there's something installed by AT&T that I'm assuming connects to the Ethernet port that works. If it matters, the one port that does work is yellow while the other are white. Any advice is welcome. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:26 PM PDT We have a family compound that we're building with multiple buildings. I currently have DSL coming in but plan to add Starlink as soon as we can. I also have a 24 port cisco router I managed to obtain for free that I plan to use. But for now, I'm just going to use the router that came with the DSL. I have five cat-6 wires buried running to nearby buildings. They're all coming into a computer room where the DSL is. And I plan to add wireless access points in each building so that we can all share internet access. So my question is, which wireless access point do you all recommend? I could just go out and buy whatever cheap home device is available. But I'm wondering if there's a better solution. I'd prefer not to have a normal home wifi router that wants to do its own ip masquerade while treating the router in my office like it's the ISP. Also, power over IP would be nice since finding a place to plug these wireless access points in is sometimes problematic. [link] [comments] |
