I’d like to activate several of the Ethernet ports in my house Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:57 AM PDT pictures: https://imgur.com/a/LmDABJ2 Last time I did this at my old apartment, I used an Ethernet switch that routed directly to the ports I needed throughout my home. I'm not sure what the second picture is… Looks like they're using a coax switch to enable all of the coax's in the house. Any help here? Do I need some sort of different bridge (I think that's what it's called) for the Ethernet cables in here? Thanks all! [link] [comments] |
Networking noob: do I need a router? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:54 PM PDT Long story short, my ISP provided a brick with blinking lights that, according to Google, is an Arris TG862. Being the kind of person that doesn't worry too much about tech, I let the little guy do its thing, but lately, the signal quality has been awful (about 200 sq ft before speed and quality suffers) and connecting more than 2 devices is an exercise in futility. This makes me wonder, what do I have and what do I need to improve this situation? I thought wifi extender, maybe router, but the more I read, the more I realize I'm slightly out of my depth. I mean, what does a router even do? Is the Arris a router or just a modem? Do I just get an extender? Please help me r/homenetworking , you are my only hope. Seriously tough, any help figuring this out would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:23 AM PDT Hi, I am looking to upgrade my home network as it's been a few years. I am planning to use the following gear from the TP-Link/Omada ecosystem:
Here is a diagram of the proposed setup: https://imgur.com/a/QJl60hq If I want to use VLANs, does the "secondary" switch from the diagram have to be smart/managed? If so, is there anything cheaper than the TL-SG2008P if I only need 4 ports? Just trying to see if I can avoid spending $86 x 2 on just switches. Also open to any feedback on the equipment choices for compatibility. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Looking for help with this project Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:20 PM PDT Hello! I hope someone will be able to help me with this…..we remodeled the shop behind our house and are turning it into a rental/guest house for a family friend. I am trying to figure out the best way to get internet to the back building from the house. What we need to be able to do: fast enough for gaming (mostly concerned about latency issues), streaming, etc What's already in place: there is a air compressor tube running from inside the main house basement to the shop. It's too small to fit the head of a Ethernet cable for instance but if that was the way to go I could disconnect the plug and reattach it if need be. What I need help with: what is the best option for what I want to do? Is a wifi bridge realistic or would that cause me latency issues when gaming or streaming? Or should I be pulling a long Ethernet cable through the air compressor hose? I just want to do it once, therefore I'm coming to this sub in hope that the pros can help me haha! The house and shop are roughly 200ft apart for reference! Also located in Canada if that matters. Thank you for any help! [link] [comments] |

How to set up parental control for DLink router in repeater mode? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:21 PM PDT I'm using DLink DIR 819 in the repeater mode. The admin page of the router does not show me parental-control option. How do I set it up? [link] [comments] |

Ethernet adapter no longer working on some outlets Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:06 PM PDT I have been using an ethernet adapter for internet for some time now but the outlet I have it plugged into stopped connecting to the powerline. I have tested the other outlets in the rooms and the only one that connects is an outlet across from my setup and resorting to using that one would be a little awkward. Any help in my situation or explanation as to why some of the outlets in my room don't work for my ethernet adapter is appreciated and also the ethernet adapter I use is a TP LINK AV 1000. Let me know if you need any more information, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Router advice - set and forget style - R605 or Hex S? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:06 AM PDT Hi all, I have 2x TP-link EAP245 and a oc200 controller, and looking to swap from the modem/router supplied by my provider to something separate as the ISP provided one has the bare minimum of configurability. I am looking for something ultra stable and relatively easy to set up. I am by no means a network expert, but I am decent with googling solutions :) I am looking at the following routers, but having a hard time deciding between the two.
I am on a 300/50 line, and will use the router initially for switching purposes as well but in the future might get dedicated switch for that. [link] [comments] |
Looking for modem + router selection / setup advice for 1200Mbps plan Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:46 PM PDT There's currently a deal going on for 1200Mbps speeds offered by one of our service providers. I figured I'd take it as an opportunity to upgrade my setup - so I was planning to buy a modem with a 2.5Gbps port (MB8611) and pair it with a router with a 2.5Gbps WAN port. I'm hoping to connect the router to at least one device via ethernet, but the issue I'm having is that none of these routers have a multi-gig LAN port. Am I missing something here in how these networks are typically setup to take advantage of anything greater than 1Gbps? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Adding a cat7 extension cord to my house wired with cat5e Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:21 PM PDT My home is wired with Cat5e and I am trying to relocate an ethernet jack from one wall to an adjacent wall by making an "extension cord" and hiding it under/behind the baseboard and then fishing it back up the wall, where I will have relocated the keystone. I unwired and terminated the cable that was initially connected to the keystone and am using a coupler to join the wall wiring to my extension cord. Since I already had a long enough cat7 cable lying around, I decided to use it as my extension. I cut off the connector from one end and wired it to the keystone... but it doesn't seem to be working. I am not network-savvy enough to know what exactly is going wrong here. I'm pretty sure the wiring itself was done right... I proved this to myself by performing the same task on a short cat5e patch cable and it works. So, what's the best way to get this to work? Do I need to use a cat5e cable instead? Or should I be using a newer keystone than the cat5e one that was already installed in my house? Or something else? The extension cord that I am using is a flat cable with smaller wires... is that the source of my issue? [link] [comments] |
Need suggestions for a temporary (maybe perm) router Posted: 03 Jul 2021 03:29 PM PDT Going to be moving soon and leaving my server rack in place until I'm ready to move it, but also need internet at the new place. Going with a Netgear CM1200 cable modem, but not sure what router to use at the moment. I will move one of my TPLink waps over as well. Debating about getting a TPLink TL-R605 for temporary use, and then maybe permanent if I like it, but not sure. I've been using pfsense for just over 5 years, but it's really over kill for me I think. [link] [comments] |

Help w/ networking an old stone farmhouse in Europe Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:42 PM PDT We have a long, 2-foot stone walled farmhouse. It is 3-story with an upstairs, a ground floor, and a sub-ground-floor. All 3 need to be networked as there are bedrooms on each. It's a long house, with each floor being ~3-4 rooms along one axis. Can I get some help chooosing the right tech without blowing a heckload of money? Currently are with Orange with DSL connection getting about 11MBPS down sitting right next to router. We may be able to bump speed a little with $$, but will never be gigabit. That's fine for us and we are OK with slower connection. Our main issue is WiFi connectivity reaching into each room due to the narrow doorways and thick stone. The Wifi will simply not reach around the stone corners even from a powerline point to the outdoor area 10 feet away around the corner. Current situation:
The powerline connections have been just OK, but they tend to be spotty (ie the WiFi signal will randomly drop or get very weak, also they are not fully "meshed" together. Already tried/not working well:
Considerations:
Plz help! Would love recommendations, do's, don'ts, in this situation. Willing to drop some $$ on the right solution, but not $$$$. What am I doing wrong? [link] [comments] |
Trying to get Open Nat type on my Netgear Aircard 797S Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:30 PM PDT I have recently moved in with new people and for the past few days I've been trying to get my Xbox One to have an open Nat type, so I can use voice chat when playing. There is no physical modem in the house and we get wifi from a Netgear device (i'm not really sure how it works). Ive logged into the manager to change the router settings but there isnt anywhere to just set it to open, so I've tried lots of other work arounds but none of them have worked. Ive tried turning on UPnP I tried forwarding all the ports xbox says to on https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-one-port-forwarding . I've also tried putting the xbox One's Ip in the DMZ but that hasn't changed anything. and anything I do either does nothing, says UPnP isn't working or gives me a double Nat and I can't find a way to put it in bridge mode. If there are any other methods that I have missed I'm willing to try, or if my router is simply incapable of having an open Nat type then please let me know, Thank You [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:21 PM PDT Good Evening everyone, i plan to run an ethernet cable from my xbox, though a wall into a crawl space through another wall to the outside and then back inside into the lan port on my router. To do this i would have to cut an end of the ethernet cable because i can't pass it through with the connector. My only problem is according to the cables description on amazon it uses the t568c standard. i'm only familar with the t568 a and b standard. so would i have to cut both ends and convert them into a b standard or would it be possible for someone to explain how to make a c standard. i can't find any info on google. Any advice will be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Are separate 2.4/5Ghz Networks my only solution for Wyzecams? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:09 PM PDT I recently purchased a Netgear Nighthawk XR1000 and had initially used the admin tools to create a single SSID for both 2.4 and 5Ghz. Unfortunately when setting up the wyzecams in my home they'd only connect to the 2.4 Ghz network. I'd really prefer not to have to decouple both networks whenever I install a new Wyze product or other device that doens't support 5Ghz. Is there any solution I should be considering? Can't find Loopback Pseudo Interface to remove it Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:07 PM PDT I've read a few articles/Questions on the web stating how to remove it and ended up knowing its name was changed and that i need to go into service manager, View, Show hidden applications and removing it from my network adapter section but it isn't there. It appears in CMP using Netsh Show ip config but I can't find it on my laptop. (We also have a PC but i can confirm its not there using the above methods either) Is there any way to find this program/application/interface to remove or disable it? [link] [comments] |
does a separate Router and modem provide better wifi converage than a combo? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:06 PM PDT My ISP is providing me a free combo modem. My house is multi story and as someone with no technical knowledge, my only concern is all 3 levels, ground, 2nd floor and basement should receive good wifi coverage. For this specific reason only, would getting my own modem and router provide better wifi coverage than a combo modem? [link] [comments] |
C3000Z Not Working As Access Point Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:05 PM PDT Hello! Century Link has given me a second C3000Z router, I'm looking to use it as a second access point on the other side of the house. I am following this guide I found https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/how-to-turn-an-old-wi-fi-router-into-an-access-point/, I have set the other C3000Z, I'll call it router A, to have an IP range starting at 192.168.0.3, have set router B's Modem IP Address to 192.168.0.2. Confusingly, when I set router B's address, I have to turn on DHCP, but it then when I save it, it disables it again. I'm not sure if this is an issue, just wanted to point it out. After doing this, I am able to get ethernet working through it, but the wifi is not enabled. Looking at the Connection Status tab, it shows that CenturyLink WAN is not connected, and that Internet is not connected, but this doesn't seem accurate since I'm able to connect through it. Additionally, I do not see the wifi networks even though I have set them to be enabled, while still named differently than router A's names. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do to correctly set up my second C3000Z to transmit the same signal on the other side of my house? Please let me know if there is any other information I can give that will make it easier to understand the problem or if anything I said didn't make sense, thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Help with friend's sketchy VDSL connection (pic) Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:58 PM PDT I'm hoping to get someone with VDSL experience to weigh-in on some signal stats. If that's you, read on! My buddy is stuck with CenturyLink (fiber is literally blocks from his house, but he can't get it yet), and he's been having lots of intermittent trouble, most notably when he's playing games on Xbox Live. Thinking he was on cable, I told him to send me some screenshots of 192.168.100.1 so that I could take a look at his signal strength and line quality, but it turns out he's on VDSL and I'm out of my comfort zone with reading VDSL signal stats. Screenshots of signal pages from his modem: The biggest potential red flags I'm seeing are:
Anyway, wondering if any of this looks out of line. I'm hoping to give him some pointers so that when he does talk to CL Tech Support (shudder), he'll have some solid info to work with. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Can't find UniFI AP Lite in my living room Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:46 PM PDT My router/modem are in the back room of my apartment and I bought the UniFI AP (UAP-AC-LITE) for my living room to get better wifi out there. I posted before about setting up my AP and it sounded like I need to get some MoCA adapters to take advantage of the coax cable out there, so I bought some and posted again trying to get them to work. It looks like I set them up and they're working, but I can't access/find my AP out there when I search for it. When I move my AP into the back room and connect it to my router it works, but out there nothing. I know the coax cable out in my living room works, and the blue MoCA and green LAN lights are flashing on the adapter in the living room. Picture of the living room setup. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I'm missing. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:30 PM PDT I've got a dumb switch connecting the house drops in the garage to my gear in a closet inside. Should this switch ideally be connected to one of the Routers switch ports or should it be daisy chained/cascaded to the "core" switch? Is it just gonna depend on whether most traffic is going to be headed to the LAN or to the internet? Example: | Router port 2 | -- | Office Switch | -- | Garage Switch | | Router port 2 | -- | Office Switch | [link] [comments] |
How can i block internet access for specific devices with an Asus RT-AC66U B1 or RT-AX88U?
