Home Networking GoCoax 2.5Ghz MoCA signal bleed question

Home Networking GoCoax 2.5Ghz MoCA signal bleed question

GoCoax 2.5Ghz MoCA signal bleed question

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:10 PM PDT

I've been running two GoCoax 2.5Ghz MoCA adapters for a few months now without any issues and I'm about to add a third.

My question is, if I add the third and leave encryption for the adapters disabled, is there a possibility of my signal bleeding out into the street? I have a PoE filter where the coax comes into my house to keep the higher MoCA frequency contained inside the premises, so I've always just kind of assumed that would contain my network activity to my home.

Just want to make sure I'm on the right track here.

    Thanks.

    Network Printer Safety

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:52 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm working in re-doing my home network, and have been struggling to find a solution for where to put my network printer while maintaining functionality and security.

The device in questions is one of these Phone-Home printers from HP (HP OfficeJet 5230). I use it for the Instant Ink service, which ends up being significantly cheaper for my use case then buying ink outright. For this feature to work, however, the printer needs access to the internet.

I'm currently working on moving my home network to separate VLANs anyway in order to separate my IoT devices from my Personal devices. I'd like to take this opportunity to separate the printer from my home network if I can.

Is there something I can do in order to still have access to the print function from my home network, without having the printer be a huge liability?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

How do I get Plex out from behind a double NAT?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 09:55 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm double NATted not by choice. Have a fibre modem/router from isp, and my own router is behind it.

Removing ISP modem isn't an option. I also can't put it in bridge mode as it also serves the phone line.

I have a Plex server in my network that I want accessable remotely for my family. It doesn't work right now as the Plex port isn't open.

My question is: 1) can I port forward on ISP modem/router, then port forward again on my own one to make it accessable? 2) would putting my router in the ISP modem/router DMZ effectively do the same thing?

    Thanks

A broadband cable running to my router was severed & I soldered it together, will it have any detrimental impact?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 11:18 AM PDT

We had some workers remove the old carpets & they cut through a 4 core telephone/broadband line without knowing. It's not in a location that's really viable to run a new length of cable so I did a half decent job of soldering each cable back together, heat shrinking each individual cable then heat shrinking everything back together. It's worked fine so far; stable & speeds aren't any different to normal. Will it hold up in the future & not pose any problems?

    New AX4300 behaving suspiciously

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 01:44 PM PDT

I had an aging wifi router that was barely able to handle our 300 Mbps connection, and Costco had the AX4300 25% off. I figured getting this would be one less step to take when I finally decide to update to 1 Gbps fiber.

Well, I installed the thing. I am using it now. The speed test from my PC has dropped from 215 Mbps to 70 Mbps. Yet the Nighthawk app, amazingly, reports that my internet speed is 547 Mbps!

Wow! Almost double what my ISP allows! Fantastic hack!

OK, so what is going on here? Do I need to return this thing?

And no, don't worry, I am not installing any of that Netgear armor garbage on any of my devices. And if anyone knows how to disable the 30-day trial the router automatically activated, please let me know.

Edit: And yeah, I am on the 5GHz network just as I was before the switch.

Edit 2: I see that my PC's "link rate" with the AX4300 is 71 Mbps, while my wife's Galaxy S10 is getting 215 Mbps. Reconnecting got me to 86 Mbps. Why might this happen when my old WIFI router got me 200+? Both routers are/were sitting just 6 feet away from my PC.

Edit 3: If it matters, my wifi adapter is integrated Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 with two antennas. It is connecting using 802.11ac on 5 GHz at 86 Mbps.

    UPDATE: Solved!

So, I found the following reddit post from someone who was having similar problems with this router, who was able to solve it, quite mysteriously, by switching to WPA3 and then back to WPA2.

I decided to follow the same steps, except that WPA3 made it impossible for any of my devices (except for perhaps my wife's phone, but she did not want to give it up) to connect to the network. So, I did the only thing one can do in such situations: factory reset.

This time around, I did NOT use the app to configure the router as that took forever and activated the security trial. I set it all up via the web interface, which was much faster, and the security trial is not activated.

And, like magic, my link speed is now 433 Mbps, up from 86 Mbps no matter how many times I reconnected. Speed test was 340 Mbps from my PC, up from the low 70s.

So, I think any one of the following might have allowed my PC to connect with reasonable speeds:

    • Factory reset, somehow
    • Not having the security trial activated
    • Not having used the app, which spent a very long time doing God knows what, even before the firmware update
    • A different channel having been chosen?

    Can I use a QSFP28 copper DAC for 40GbE on QSFP+ hardware?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:11 PM PDT

I've been experimenting with different combinations of NICs between my PC and NAS to get the fastest possible connection. Because they're both running PCIe 3.0 x4, I know I can't get 50 or even 40Gbps, but I'd like to get as close as possible. I recently tried these Mellanox ConnectX-4 NICs, which use QSFP28, with a QSFP28 DAC. They established nominal 40GbE and 50GbE links, but both ran at only 25Gbps. Similarly, these have 2x25GbE ports, but they were limited to a combined throughput of 25Gbps. This therefore appears to be a chipset limitation: when running these x8 cards in an x4 slot, the maximum throughput is 25Gbps.

Next I'm going to try some older 40/56GbE ConnectX-3 NICs, which connect using QSFP+. Do I need a new DAC, or can I use the QSFP28 one? I know that a QSFP28 cable won't work for 100GbE on QSFP hardware, but will it work for 40GbE?

Once I figure out the fastest possible connection, I'll get some fiber and appropriate transceivers.

2.5 Gbps RTL8125B PCI-E adapters and gigabit switches

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I have a question about using 2.5 Gbps RTL8125B PCI-E adapters and gigabit ethernet switches. I have 2 RTL8125B adapters to get 2.5 Gbps speeds connected together. I want to network a third PC, but I would need two more 2.5 Gbps adapters in this scenario. If I connect two or more 2.5 Gbps adapters to a gigabit ethernet switch, will I still get 2.5 Gbps speeds on those adapters?

Laptops stop loading data, disconnect/reconnect from ASUS router, then works again?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Running ASUS RT-AC68U with Merlin firmware.

After streaming video for a while on a laptop, it stops and buffers, and the VPN software notifies that it is trying to reconnect. Trying to load any site fails, entire connection seems dead.

Disconnect from WiFi and reconnect, then everything is working again.

    Why does this happen?

Reasonable hardware for wireless bridge / repeater with VPN?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:00 PM PDT

I'll start off by saying this is both stupid and overly complex. But, it's the situation I'm faced with. There is an apartment complex with free wifi, but it's wide open. No security, authentication, etc. But the speed is great (100+mb) and so is the cost. However, it's set up like a typical guest network where devices can't communicate with each other. So things like Echo devices playing music in sync with each other doesn't work. Also, TP Link smart switches and such won't connect to an open WiFi network (good on TP Link, but unfortunate for this situation).

What I need is a device that can use the existing WiFi as the WAN, but create its own network and a new SSID with WPA2/3. And, ideally, be able to tunnel everything on that network through a VPN, but that's icing on the cake.

I feel like DD-WRT's repeater bridge mode is close, but I'm not sure it does everything I need and I haven't touched that since the WRT54-GL days. Is there any hardware that can do this easily and be reliable? I've been on the Unifi train for a while but none of that will help here. No extreme bandwidth or anything required, and no worries about the double NAT.

    Appreciate any suggestions!

pfsense dynamic IPs in firewall rules

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:30 PM PDT

    Hi All,

A bit baffled by this one hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have a nextcloud instance that I want to limit to 3 FQDN hostnames. These hostnames are managed by DuckDNS and updated with the new dynamic IPs automatically.

I have made a firewall alias with these three hostnames and used it as the source in my firewall rule. I was hoping this would then let me access my nextcloud instance from any of these dynamic IPs. So far I can't seem to resolve anything and from what I can tell it's not getting past the firewall on the pfsense end.

I have checked the IPs in the tables for this alias and all seem to be correct. Does anyone have any ideas or know if maybe this setup with dynamic addresses in the firewall just won't work?

    Thanks in advance!

    Trace Home RJ45 Cables

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 01:03 PM PDT

Hey everyone. So in my home we have many internet/telephone home plugs that haven't been centrally wired to a switch and I do want to do that in order to cover some extra rooms.

I do not however have a wiring map in my hands so I've been searching for a way to quickly trace the cables I need. Please note that the RJ45 Cables that run through the walls are already plugged into the actual home plugs, their endpoints though aren't so I just have multiple RJ45 cables hanging in the basement next to the patch panel.

Any tips? Thanks in advance for any help :)

    MOCA and Coax Splitters

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:55 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am trying to spread wifi signal throughout my house and backyard. I bought a single 2.0 MoCA adapter from Ebay, seems too cheap to be true but we will see. However, I realize now the existing coaxials were unscrewed when our internet was installed last year. There is only the outside line going straight to my HELIX router.

We use Videotron cable internet 400 mbps, we use a HELIX router that also has a MoCA function, which I have enabled. I wanted to know if I install a cable splitter outside as well as a second one inside when I buy a second MoCA adapter for a basement computer, as seen in the paint art (Desired Set-up). Will MoCA be communicated from HELIX back through through the splitter to the other outlet? It seems a bit odd having cable internet come through to the HELIX router then return out on the same coaxial line and somehow work. The router is DOCSIS 3.1. If having two splitters like to two separate MOCAs is not good, would the back up set up work as seen in the second imgur image?

I am looking at this splitter since I can get it same day at BBY and return easily. If that is no good I will use amazon.

    Thank you for the insight.

    Help: Mech Router Purchasing Advice

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:24 PM PDT

Network info: Cox Gigablast 1000MB download speed, 6000 square foot home, around 50 network connected items or devices.

Current situation: Using old ASUS router with barely has 5G capability with two ranger extenders. Getting around 250 MB download speed. Want to upgrade to a mesh network But am unsure which router/mesh set of routers to pick for my situation.

Goals: A. 6G capabilities B. Significant Increased speed with limited lag C. Good coverage/range D. Limited dropped connections & blackouts. Current ASUS router drops the connection at least X12 per day for a few seconds but something's for up to 5 mins at at time. E. Longevity, when I purchase network equipment I expect it to last for a min of 5 years. F. Price is not a factor, the ones I have chosen are all around the same price point. G. Must play well with apple devices & nas systems

Here are the contenders I have chosen. I would really appreciate your help in narrowing it down & deciding a winner based on my Network & Goals above.

    1. ASUS ZenWiFi ET8 2PK - Tri-Band Mesh WiFi 6E System
    2. Netgear Orbi Pro WiFi 6 Tri-Band Mesh System SXK80B3
    3. Linksys AX4200
    4. Amazon Eero Pro 6 Tri-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 system.

Which is it going to be? Let me know your thoughts & statistics on the contenders. I am by no means a network expert & would really appreciate your advice & assistance! :)

Side note: I have already purchased a new top of the line ARRIS modem, I am aware of the role & importance they play & don't feel I need advice in this area rn.

Side note 2: I seem to have confused "C" with "S" in the title sorry about that but I don't think titles can be edited.

Recently switched from Xfinity to Frontier Fiber Optic and have questions

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:42 PM PDT

For a while now I've been on a gigabit plan with Xfinity, but our HOA recently switched us to Frontier. Ultimately, this seemed like a good thing to us because we were able to get FiberOptic at a relatively low upgrade cost.

We opted for the fiber optic.

Previously, in order to save money with Xfinity, I sent back their included modem/router combo and used my own Arris SB8200 modem and a couple Eeros for a mesh wifi network.

It was simple but got the job done for us.

I was hoping to just do the same thing when we switched to Frontier, but the technician told me the Arris modem was not compatible with what we were doing.

Also, while the previous Xfinity technician set us up with our modem/router in our upstairs office, the Verizon technician set us up down in the garage (which is where the coax from outside comes from in the first place).

I thought this was odd, but I saw what he installed and there's a Verizon ONT box, some white power source (don't know what it is), and what seems to be an Arris NVG468MQ (it's theirs, not ours...and I also can't figure out if it's just a router, a modem/router combo, or what).

THEN, he set us up with an Actiontec MoCA adapter in the upstairs office where the gateway Eero is located.

    So my biggest questions are:

    • Is all of this necessary? Are we not able to save money by using our own equipment here?
    • Considering this whole new setup, am I actually hurting myself by using the Eero now? If they're going to set me up with a router in the garage, and the wifi connection is good enough anyway, is my Eero just pointless? Even if I'm not hurting myself by using it, is it just kind of null at this point?

Sorry this stuff seems obvious, but I don't know whole lot about networking.

Coax question leading to a moAC question

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:38 PM PDT

I have an elementary education regarding wiring for my house. The house was wired for directv and I have 9 coax outlets throughout the house. Outside I have no cable box. Just 2 coax cables that are both coming out of the house. One was going to the directv sat and the other was just tucked behind a pole. I have fiber internet and am trying to use moAC to connect Ethernet to my pc. My wife is using the fiber port in another room for work purposes. How do I make the wire live? Where is the coax connected to services? Sorry if I'm not making myself clear but I barely understand what I trying to do, ha.

Networking noob just moved into a new house. I have fiber + ethernet ports in every room, how best would I go about setting up wireless here? Photos included with layout.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:42 AM PDT

Ok so we have 1000/1000 and here is the layout of our place:

    https://imgur.com/a/HkKO3Xe

There are 4 ethernet jacks / ports as noted by the green boxes. The switch + cables looks like this:
    https://imgur.com/a/0S1qEFR

In there I see one gigabit ethernet switch that has the line coming from the building and outputs into the 4 jacks. We do not need a modem as instructed by our ISP.

When I test all of the ethernet jacks in the rooms, they all work and I am getting 1000/1000 mbps.

I am currently just using a TP-Link Archer A6 by using the ethernet port in bedroom 2 and it is placed a few feet off the ground

Using the 5Ghz band I seem to have 200-500 download on my iPhone and Macbook throughout the place. This is with the channels and channel widths set to auto.

Is there anything I should be doing differently here?

    10GB Home Network Development

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:41 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to install CAT6 ethernet throughout the whole of my house at 10GB. At the moment, i'm waiting to redo the rooms individually as the house is a little old and is a working project. I have bought the tools necessary to create Ethernet cables, patch cables, testing them, etc. I have the ASUS RT-AC87U router which i'm willing to upgrade anyway. The internet in my area is at speeds 70-80 Mbps but will be upgraded to Gigabit in the future. I have bought a reel of CAT6 as well as a 24 Port Managed Gigabit switch and 8 port unmanaged just for plug and play. I've been looking and some people do or don't recommend patch panels. I personally don't mind either way, preferably I would choose the fastest route but a patch panel would be nice to have with a simpler, cleaner look for my media room. I like gaming and want that to be up to speed as well. I do also have NAS and want to be able to transfer files quickly as it takes ages via WI-FI. As i'm looking for 10GB I will be getting a 10GB switch. My router at the moment only has 1 Gigabit ports, does this matter and/or affect performance the 10GB? I'm currently looking for tips and the best guide to doing this. I think a new router is definitely needed but I find looking for a good router is difficult and whether i should get a mesh system or not as my house is kind-of big but not mansion like. I want to preferably get good reception and fast speeds throughout the house. in the future i'm also going to look at getting Control 4.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Internet help!!!

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:10 PM PDT

Hey guys I really need some help. I recently upgraded my internet from optimum to 1 gig and bought multiple new modems and wifi routers to achieve this speed. I bought the Netgear cm1000 modem and the nighthawk ac1900 wifi router but was only getting around 200 Mbps on my ps5 connected directly to the wifi router. I checked by connecting it directly to the modem and was getting around 700mbps. I changed my modem to the Arris sb8200 but the speeds remain the same on my ps5, direct to modem it's around 700 and direct to wifi router it's around 200. I then changed my wifi router to the netgear nighthawk x6 ac3200 thinking it would change the speeds but no, I was still getting 200 Mbps on ps5. I then swapped both my modem and wifi router for a combo, the Netgear nighthawk x4s and that kept my ps5 at around 700 Mbps. My wireless speeds throughout were around 100 for 5ghz and 50 for 2.5ghz. I don't know what the issue is, why are my wifi speeds so slow and why is my wired speed so slow on ps5 when directly connected to a wifi router. I called optimum every day with no help, even a technician came but nothing changed. I can't even change my internet provider as optimum is the only one in my area.

    Access points

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:48 PM PDT

So in my house I have my main router (xfinity) on the 3rd floor and an access point (UniFi) on the first floor (garage). I recently got a tp link router intended for school, but I decided to test it out as an access point on the 2nd floor because the Wifi still doesn't work too well. The desktop on the 2nd floor (right next to the closet with the tp link) only hit 40 mbps. But when I unplugged the UniFi it hit 450+ and still 450+ with tp link unplugged. How do I make sure devices connect to the closest access points? Obviously phones move around and reconnect to diff ones (i think) but how would I do this for devices such as video games, desktops, smart TVs, etc? Is it simply bc im using multiple brands?
