Home Networking Connecting Conduit WAN to routers in different rooms while having them Mesh together

Connecting Conduit WAN to routers in different rooms while having them Mesh together

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 02:40 PM PDT

Closet: 4 Ethernet Cables (One is a WAN connection from my ISP and the other 3 goes to a room each).

    Rooms (3 total): 1 Ethernet Outlet/Wall-Plate each.

Equipment: 2 Routers (Amplifi Alien - These current Mesh with each other wirelessly) + will buy whatever else is needed to link them from the closet via Ethernet.

    Problem:

Closet has a single WAN port, router does NOT fit in the conduit box in the closet. I used an ethernet coupler to connect the WAN cable and the ethernet outlet in Room #1, then wired the router to that.

This leaves Room #2 and Room #3 without an ethernet connection.

Image for clarity (Hand Drawn - LightMode): https://i.imgur.com/UfcBjAr.png

Image for clarity (Hand Drawn - DarkMode): https://i.imgur.com/lvos3ys.png

    ---

    Possible Solution?:

Buy a small Unifi ER-X or ER-X router (any router capable of 1Gbps+) and place it into the Conduit Box in the closet.

Put Alien #1 and Alien #2 in their respective Rooms, and wire them to the closet in Bridge Mode.

    ---

    Questions:

Is there a way to have the two Alien routers seamlessly Mesh on WiFi while still providing Ethernet to their respective rooms (acting like a Switch)?

For example, if I put both Aliens in Bridge-Mode and connect them both via ethernet to the Closet Router, will that work? OR will it drop connection when walking between rooms?

Is there a better solution where I can use the two routers I already have + any additional hardware needed?

Note: The Alien routers don't support VLAN 802.1Q or any VLAN functionality at all, but the ER-X and ER-4 do.

    Monoprice Slimline CAT 6A Issues

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:19 PM PDT

    Hello -

Last year I replaced virtually all (11) of my ethernet cables with 36AWG slimruns (E467139). The lengths vary from 3ft to 20ft, the cables were also bought directly from monoprice website.

The problems I'm expierancing are intermittent disconnections. The disconnects are a fraction of a second, and generally, on reconnect auto-negotiation chooses 100MB over 1G FDX. Setting 1G explicitly solves the auto-negotiation issue but doesn't resolve the disconnects. At first, I thought this was a single cable issue but after over a year the failure rate has been huge, here are some examples of runs that exhibited this issue multiple times until replaced with a new (non-monoprice slimline) cable. All of these devices are 1G FDX capable:

    3ft Modem to Router
    3ft Router to PC
    3ft Router to NAS
    3ft Switch to PS5
    5ft Switch to TV
    14ft Router to Switch

At this point 1/2 of my runs are no longer using these cables. I've tried replacing it with spare slimrun cables only to have it fail again in the future. I have not seen this behavior on any non-monoprice slimrun cable.

Sharing this in case anyone has had similar issues or anyone has thoughts. When it fails it usually disconnects several times repeatedly, there may be several days in between failures. Router and switch firmware are kept up to date (ubiquity).

EDIT: Thanks a ton for the responses. Long story short seems to be this cable fails to meet the ethernet standard it's advertised as and because of that we can't be shocked it's having issues, so, stay away! Also, I will have to test this "Lifetime warranty" they claim.

    Docsis 3.1 and Moca 2.5

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:28 AM PDT

    Greetings,

I'm very excited, as after work today I'll get to install my new GoCoax Moca 2.5 adapters. After reading as much as I could find on the subject, I have some concerns with Docsis 3.1 and Moca 2.5 coexisting -- however it would simplify things. Here's my use case:

When quarantine happened and my wife began working from home I had a great excuse to put some money into the home network. I upgraded to Comcast's 1200 Mbps plan, which after a frustrating week of downgraded performance, I realized meant upgrading my cable modem to something docsis 3.1 capable -- a bummer because I purchased my previous "gigabit capable modem" thinking I'd be future proofed.

I replaced my Asus router/ap with a low power passively cooled computer with 4 nics running PFsense. Stuck a switch on that, connected the wife's work computer and a unifi AP (powered with poe from the switch, very slick!).

Previously, all this equipment was in the living room where most of the network and internet accessing occurs. To get the wife hardwired for work I moved everything to her office in our bedroom -- downstairs and on the opposite end of the house from the living room.

That distance, plus the crowded wifi in the neighborhood, everyone at home all the time with every TV, phone, and laptop streaming hd video and zoom meetings, the wifi upstairs is performing as you'd expect. I've known of the power line adapters for years, but never heard great things and dismissed them, kind of lumped the coax options in that same boat. After lurking in this sub, was excited to learn that moca is a very viable option to get a hardwired network upstairs. And this brings us to the fun part.

We rent. We have Comcast 1200mbps docsis 3.1 internet, no TV service just internet. The PoE is very clean and straightforward on the outside corner of the house with one splitter and individual coax runs to each wall plate. I ordered a PoE filter to place between the main line and the splitter.

Question 1. This splitter, it has the main input, one coax input for power (my understanding of which is if it's powered it's amplifying the signals -- the sticker is getting sun faded so many details are obscured), several normal outputs, and one specific output for the cable modem (had to figure this one out when I moved everything downstairs, what a p.i.a. that was -- have purchased a coax tracer -- never again!!). So clearly this thing is at the very least filtering out the docsis from the rest of the house, and maybe filtering the television bands from the modem? Is it worth trying this with the Comcast provided splitter or is my instinct to just cut it out completely the correct one? And if I do, should I put a terminator on the coax that is providing power? Or leave that splitter in place, powered on, and just use the possibly amplified output for the modem? So mainline -> poe filter -> Comcast provided splitter input -> Comcast provided splitter modem output -> my own passive splitter -> to wall plates.

Question 2. I'd like to put the modem and Moca adapter on the same coax run, my understanding is I'll likely have to go into the MOCA settings and adjust the frequencies to avoid docsis 3.1. maybe looking at the configuration for the modem to see what frequencies are in use. If I do this, is it possible that Comcast will change those frequencies within Docsis 3.1 causing future issues? Will I leave enough bandwidth for the MOCA network (I could see adding one more MOCA adapter in the future in the daughter's bedroom for gaming.) Or is this nuts and just a headache I don't want? There is a second wall plate in the bedroom, I could leave everything with the Comcast splitter and cable modem as it is right now, run a cable along the walls above the door frames to the other wall plate (I don't love this option but if I'm going to end up having to do this anyway, might as well start there.) In this case I would detach from the Comcast splitter those wall plates and use a barrel connector (or passive splitter if I add a third) to join the MOCA adapters and not have to worry about the PoE filter, any filtering on the Comcast splitter, or playing nice with Docsis.

Thank you all in advance for your wisdom. I have learned quite a bit from y'all already

Edit: Question 3. If I separate everything, the twenty or thirty feet of cable I run across the bedroom, at that short of length will it make any difference if I run coax or Ethernet (leave the MOCA adapter with the rest of the gear or locate it next to the wall plate.)?

Looking for an AiMesh extender for Asus RT-AX86U

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have an Asus RT-AX86U router as my main router which I am super happy with. I am looking to pair it with an Asus AiMesh router to primarily use for online gaming (PS4 Pro) and streaming in the basement. Although I receive -88db in my PS4 Pro and Chromecast Ultra in the far end of the basement, I never buffer or lag, still maintaining between 60 - 120 mbps internet. If I am near the router on the first floor, I usually get around 700-800 mbps which I pay for. I am looking to get similar speeds in the basement.

I am debating to purchase either Asus RT-AX56U or RT-AX68U for the basement and use it in AiMesh Mode. I am looking to get your ideas and thoughts. Thank you

Network Slows right down while doing file copy

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 04:25 PM PDT

I have a windows 10 PC, that I am copying files from over a GBit network to a SMB server. After a couple of minutes, the file copy slows down from 100MByte/sec to about 1Mbyte/sec (almost stopped).

I can fairly reliably have the copy speed up again by refreshing or loading a web page (any web page will do it); this works maybe 60-70% of the time.

So it seems that the windows network stack is getting confused with the high IO, or something like that.

The network card is a good quality Intel Gbit NIC; I could change to the onboard Broadcom gbit interface I suppose and see what the result is.

Any other advice on what the issue might be, and how to resolve it?

[EDIT]: It looks like the slowdown is periodic, and the web page refresh hack/trick was placebo. (I can't work out how to attach pictures so you'll just have to believe me).

It further looks like the slowdown is to 10Mb/sec, so maybe the switch is renegotiating the speed? Maybe the cable is bad? Maybe the switch port is bad? I'll try changing both (one at a time of course), to see what the effect will be.

System for Wifi, Wired and IP cameras from one company

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 01:39 PM PDT

    Hi,

we are building a house and my task is to figure out. How are we going to manage internet access over the house and security IP cameras. I want to have it all connected to one big system. I want at least 3x wifi AP, 5-8x cameras, camera doorbel and friendly mobile app.

I would go for Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine, PoE switch, Wifi Acccess Point, IP cameras, ...

I also so more wireless option from TP Link, but I would rather use the Ubiquiti.

What do you use? What would you recommend?

    Guest network question

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I just got an Asus RT-AX86U and was going to setup a guest network for when friends come over. What do most people set them up for, 2.4 or 5? Or do you enable both and setup the same ssid and password? And if you do that, will it automatically switch bands when they get in and out of range? Also, I'm setting up an external hd to file drop from my phone on my network. If I don't enable intranet access on the guest network, will the guests be able to see it?

    Help with setup

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:43 PM PDT

    Hi there

I'm currently living in a 3-story town home and the ISP modem/router sits in the basement.

My office on the second floor does not have any ethernet ports but one exists in the main area outside of the room.

I really want to have a wired connection for my office to connect to my pc but not sure if dropping a line just for one room is worth the trouble/$$.

What other options do i have to have fastest speed possible for my office?

Can I install a unifi 8 port switch in the attic?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 04:31 PM PDT

I will eventually want security cameras and I need to add an outdoor antenna for the new patio. The switch I want to install would go in the attic but it does get to be 130 or so up there. I know that's above their operating temp so did I answer my own question? Lol.

    Actiontec WCB6200q and ECB6200K02

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:54 PM PDT

I was looking on here before I asked but does anybody know if the serial numbers on the Actiontec MoCA adapters can be flagged as rented somehow on Verizon?

I bought a Verizon branded WCB6200q and it turned out it was still rented in their system so I'm a little burned by that. I just wanted to cover my bases so I wouldn't get any more unwelcome surprises.

    Thanks!

    rj11 to rj45 advice

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:53 PM PDT

    Hello,

I would like to setup internet in the living room using an ethernet cable, my main issue is that the only things i have is a rj11 wall port. ( there is also a fiber port, but i cant put the hub here due to my GF not wanting the hub in the room)

i wanred to know if its possible for me to get a rj11 to rj45 (cable) from the wall to the tv, then on the other end of the wall port following the cable to the other room theres the rj11 cable (assuming this is the other end of the living room one) then get this to go from rj11 to rj45 (cable) and plug into my router. Will this work?

Edit: Not sure if important but im based in the Uk and live in a new build 2021 and have a virgin media hub in modem mode connected to a Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6 4

This includes enabling any feature that would allow whatever ping requests is needed (Temporarily) to see if the port is successfully opened. I've tested various ports but only 80 shows itself being opened while an example of port 3074 (Xbox gaming port) being forwarded but under every port checking site i checked (several) it remains closed.

From what I've read in other reddit posts, this seems possible, but I have no idea how to do it. My household's current internet is provided by Spectrum- is there a specific company that I should go to for the second connection? Anything I need to do besides just calling them up? Sorry if I got something wrong, totally clueless in this regard.

Think I've messed up, help with an armoured cat cable

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:44 AM PDT

So I bought an armoured cat cable to run from the house to an outside garage, and while I was hoping to just connect them up with rj45 however after looking it up that doesn't seem to be the best idea.

So if I buy a loaded faceplate and backplate, then a punch down tool, this should remedy the situation? I'm quite new to all this so not sure exactly what I need to do. Cheers for any advice you can give.

Just got an ASUS RT-AX86U, plugged it in, noticing some Wifi drops. Help?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 12:55 PM PDT

Based on advice here it seems like the AX86U was the best direction to go in for a new router (outside of a TP-Link). Mine just arrived in the mail and so I plugged it in right away. Not ready to switch over everything yet, I am still on the clock and all. I took this time to roam the house and check all the weak spots in the Wifi Analyzer app and see how the new router stacks up. And it's getting better signal strength than my old one! Even the 5Ghz on this is going farther than the 2.4Ghz on my old RT-N66U.

But I am seeing these dips. Here is an example.
    https://imgur.com/a/DMb0t3S

Red and Blue is my current setup. Aqua and Green is the AX86U. The new router is outside of the rack right now (and will probably stay there) so it should have less potential interference as well. Everything is happening at once, so if I was walking into a difficult room or something they should all be dropping. Even now writing this I am looking at the graph and the green bar dropped out for maybe a full minute. I'm not sure what's going on with this new router, was hoping someone had first hand experience with this? And while I'm here, any advice for the new router? Anything I should be doing to protect my network?

    Thank you!

    Eero 6 dual-band vs Deco m9 tri-band

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 02:57 PM PDT

Hello! I am looking for a mesh wifi solution to my wifi range and speed issues in my 2,000 sqft house (two floors). I have recently upgraded from 75mb to 300mbps with Verizon Fios internet, with the Verizon gateway router (black -old- version) at one corner of my house, in the first floor. Most devices are in the second floor. While upgrading, I asked the technician whether we should move the router to the middle of the house and second floor; but he suggested that I buy one of those mesh systems instead.

I researched and found these two deals (I want to stay around $150 - 200 budget). Which one do you think will help me get better range and reliable speed and sort of more future proof in terms of tech investment?

We are an average household with 10+ devices that include smart TVs, phones, tablets etc. and my wife and I work from home on Zoom sometimes. I don't want to get into Ethernet wiring around the house, so the mesh system that will give me the better performance over wifi would be my preferred option, unless you think this would seriously impact performance for an average user.

Here are the options I am talking about, feel free to suggest anything else that may be better deal..

Deco m9 plus tri-band from Costco: $159 member price

    https://www.costco.com/tp-link-deco-m9-plus-tri-band-wi-fi-system-with-built-in-smart-hub%2c-3-pack.product.100477095.html

Eero 6 dual band from Best Buy: $181 (I reserved at this price a couple days ago, now the price shows a bit more)

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/eero-6-ax1800-dual-band-mesh-wi-fi-6-system-3-pack/6433419.p?skuId=6433419

Thanks in advance for any tips!

    Recommendations on Mesh System?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 02:36 PM PDT

First off, I don't have much home networking experience so please excuse me if I ask something that seems dumb/incorrect.

    • 1 story home 2500sqft
    • Ethernet ports in: study, family room, master bedroom, and 2 bedrooms (1 has all connections leading to closet near front of house)
    • 2 adults working from home
    • stream Netflix/Hulu/sports
    • no gaming
    • plenty of smart devices connected

Getting ready to switch to 1Gb fiber and would like to get my own router. Should I get the Google mesh system and then connect each unit to the wall Ethernet port or just leave it unconnected and utilize WiFi only? I thought Google would have the "best" system, but I've been reading about some issues lately. Should I go with eero or orbi? I would think that I'd need 3-4 access points to ensure full WiFi coverage. Or do I just get an asus or net gear router?

Paying Verizon for a gigabit, but only getting 330mbps consistently on all devices

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:21 PM PDT

I have verizon fios gigabit internet. It's supposed to be 1000mbps download speeds. However, I only get a third of that. I have the main router downstairs, which is only used for wifi. Even when close to that router, the wifi speeds as per speedtest.net are only 300 to 350mbps consistently. I don't have any wired connections to that router.

As for the range extender in my bedroom, it is a verizon actiontec wcb6200q range extender that is connected via coax cable. Through it I have almost all wired connections in my room. I have my xbox, PC, apple tv, chromecast ultra, tv, and AVR all connected to it with a wired connection. My download speeds are 300 to 330mbps download speeds. And my wifi speeds are the same.

I spoke to Verizon about it a bunch of times on live chat and on the phone. The verizon speed test seems fake to me, cause it consistently has my router receiving speeds at 950mbps, and my device speeds are half of that. I want to call verizon back about the issues, but i need to have the information so I can tell them what's what.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? please let me know. thank you

Is it feasible\practical to have in home DNS?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:21 PM PDT

I'd like to assign dns names to a few IPs in my house "printer.house.net" or media.house.net. instead of using the IP addresses. It does not need to work outside my home network. What would be needed to do this? Would an ASUS ac86 have a setting for this (I just got it, still learning it) or would I need a service running? Is it worth the effort for five or less devices? Seems like an interesting learning project.

    Mediacom modem issues

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:12 PM PDT

Hi all, wondering if anyone has ever encountered a problem similar to this.

    Equipment:

provided mediacom modem, Araknis 310 Router Araknis 110 unmanaged 24 port switch Araknis 510 AP

So context, I was setting up a pretty basic network today. Mediacom modem while running as modem/router combo was working fine. Called mediacom to put their modem in bridge mode and all of sudden it keeps resetting itself over and over.

Called mediacom back and they could see it was in bridge mode but also offline. Unplugged all of my equipment to see if some my equipment was causing the issue, still kept on happening. Couldn't get to the bottom of the issue so called them back had them take it out of bridge mode and restore old SSID settings, modem working fine again.

    Any ideas?

Setting up Additional Router to network (fios)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:05 PM PDT

Im trying to prepare for working from home. As I have been in an accident & cannot physically return. I'm pretty good at following instructions & being persistent. Yet networking ……. Blows my mind. So I'm looking for options.

⚠️Basically Right now I just need a wired Ethernet connection to this old tower.

📌Currently I have a "computer" Tower that was built by my boyfriend & his friend.

Dusted it out, HDMI 2 TV, turned on, had access to it. Not internet though probably bc they did not add wifi tech to it as it was always Ethernet wired? Lol

•Wanted 2 do more in-depth testing/ checking on its capabilities, w/ it hooked up 2 my TV before buying a monitor/whole setup.

📌Bought a Router (bestbuy said it was fios compatible): NETGEAR AC1750 wifi router model#R7400 +I was able to get pics of the main router.

    •After reading: https://www.lifewire.com/connect-routers-on-a-home-network-818060 , https://smallbusiness.chron.com/set-up-second-router-verizon-fios-60493.html & partially watching https://youtu.be/lsE9OWQdtog

📌I decided I needed help, a lot due to:

We rent the basement frm the mother of the upstairs tenet. I would like to interfere w/ them as least as possible. I gave them a heads up about this but I just want to have to set this up and not have to have any issues to which I need to get access 2 upstairs. He said he knows nothing technical here. (Which makes me assume he doesn't even know any type of account passwords ect)

+For setting up its cool but for example, I don't want to be working & have tech issues & have to interrupt/ inconvenience them in any way.

We use their wifi for our devices

    📌Called Verizon (their service)

Gave the background details ect. & described what the router looked like. Rep said it sounded like the Fios Quantum 3rd Gen. -Rep commented on my basement Coax Outlet may or may not connected/split 📌Rep Option 1: Install a Ethernet Jack & Verizon Extender 📌I asked about another Option being, Having my Own Account, Own Set up, Separate from theirs. -Rep said it's Not always available 2 do. Must ask Customer Service for special request. 📌I also asked if I could have a different provider downstairs, he commented that it could interfere with the physical tech/wiring of their stuff.

My previous experience w/ work at home requirements were usually: •Wired Ethernet Connection •Min Dwnload: 5.0 - 15MBPS / Min upload: 3.0MBPS •Windows 10 or newer •USB headset + I did a speed test from my laptop on wifi: PING 16ms / Down 45.54Mbps/ Up 25.14Mbps

?Im unsure / have no info yet if they put me into a position in my hospital at home what their requirements are and if this computer can handle it/run it.

    Access Bluetooth connections from server

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:52 PM PDT

Hey folks, I'm still quite new to home networking and stumbled into a small roadblock. I have a server located in my basement from which I'd like to access Bluetooth devices that are located in my office room on the second floor. So direct connection of the Bluetooth devices and my server unfortunately isn"t possible.

Is it possible to somehow passthrough / share e.g. a Raspberry PIs Bluetooth connections from the office over the network to the server? I also have some USB Bluetooth adapters which perhaps could be shared instead of the PIs built-in Bluetooth.

Thanks in advance for every help!
