Out of all Windows systems, which one had the best aesthetic in your opinion?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 10:25 PM PDT

Windows Vista had the best aesthetic with Aero, IMO.

Dear Microsoft. We know you are designing new OS for us BUT when you release Windows 11 we will be very disappointed if you don't give us the file explorer with this tabbed design.

Is there a way to cache, index, and search browsing history on Windows today?

Is there a way to cache, index, and search browsing history on Windows today?

In pre-release form, back when Windows Search was known as MSN Desktop Search — and in pre-release Windows Vista — there was an option to search your Internet browsing history. One Sean McLeod wrote in 2005 that:

I often find myself searching for a web page that I remember reading a couple of months ago. If I then use Google or MSN to search for the page. It can take me a long time to find the same page again since you're often overwhelmed with other pages containing your search term. But rather than being the page you want, they're sales pages.

The ideal thing would be to perform an indexed search based on some terms you remember reading in the page but limiting the search to only pages you've actually visited on the web. In other words if you had a complete copy as opposed to just a small cached subset of every web page you've visited then you could use a local desktop search against this complete browser history.

It beggars belief that things are not much different in 2021. Modern browsers such as Microsoft Edge include Collections, Google Chrome includes Read Later, Firefox includes Bookmark Tags — you get the idea — and none of these really solves the issues described above. What if the only thing I remember is something written in the page, but I have no idea what the page was or where it was located? What if I forgot to add it as a Bookmark, to a Collection, or in Read Later? But even if the page was bookmarked or otherwise saved, there is no assurance that the thing I remember from the page will be a part of the page's URL or as the save location, so searching for it may not be helpful at all!

To make matters worse, the browsers themselves make this problem worse by locking away bookmarks and history into their own silos, meaning I also need to remember which browser I used when I saw the page...

With over 8,000 bookmarks spanning multiple browsers I am constantly trying to find pages I had visited before; some things from several years ago I still recall, but I have never found them again. Is there something else for Windows today like that example application cited above?

Add Log On, Log Off and Shut down sounds to Windows 11

If we now have Start-up sound in Windows 11, I think it will be also good to have the Log On, Log Off and Shut down sounds.

Windows 11 upgrade on previously unallowed hardware?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:11 AM PDT

So for some context, my computer DOES have tpm 2.0 through fTPM. I have the RAM, storage, and UEFI boot enabled. However, my pc has a Ryzen 5 1600 which wasn't listed as supported by Microsoft.

This morning, my PC upgraded to Windows 11 automatically. (because I had the windows insider dev build enabled)

Did Microsoft add support for older CPUS or did something else happen?

How is Windows 11 so far (for those w Insider Preview)?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 01:23 PM PDT

I installed the Preview today which went seamlessly, and it's taking me a bit to get used to stuff like the center Start bar. I do think some of the redone visual aspects are cool, even "legacy" windows like Control Panel got a touchup.

    What do you guys think?

Can I have one OS on my SSD disk partition and another on my HDD disk partition? Will I be able to chose which drive the system should boot from? Will I be able to switch boot drives anytime I want to?

Any way to completely update Office 2010 SP2 for free on Windows Vista?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:19 PM PDT

I have a fully patched Windows Vista image and a retail copy of Microsoft Office 2010. I can update it to SP2, but there are about ten years of updates after that. Is there something else other than WSUS Offline that I can use for free?

How were the sounds of Windows made ? (all versions of Windows)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:17 AM PDT

If anyone know how they did to make those sounds, i would be grateful.
If they used a VST plugin, or if they recorded with real instruments, etc...

Is "windows explorer" like a [home screen] launcher ?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:44 AM PDT

Not to confuse with the file explorer, I'm taking about the desktop

For example, in Android we have many "launchers" that are home screens, eg., Nova launcher

Why i think it is: whenever we stop the process in task manager, the desktop gets frozen for a movement and refreshs.

If it is, it could be possible to change the appearance of windows(I'm guessing by use of regedit) with the windows logo and also the start screen

    Running 95 through 10

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Hey guys, dumbass here. I've got a download of RE1 as abandonware and after extracting it, windows told me that it can only run in windows 95. Is there some way that I can get this working? I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing so you'd have to baby me through it. Thanks xx
