    Google Messages Wishlist

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:41 PM PDT

With the news about all US carriers committing to use Google Messages RCS by default (at some point in the future), I took some liberty to create a list of features that I think the app should have to increase adoption and be more competitive with other popular messaging apps.

    Side-notes:

    • Yes, SMS/RCS is basically pointless outside of the US, but the likelihood of someone getting even 10% of their friends to switch to WhatsApp or Signal is extremely difficult, so default messaging may be the answer for better messaging for those in the US.
    • RCS is littered with bugs and reliability issues that will take time to resolve, but regardless, there's little preventing it from becoming the standard way most Americans communicate on Android (especially if iOS chooses to adopt too). I won't be listing any obvious bugs or quirks about RCS/Google Messages here.
    • Most of the features I'd like to see are more specific to Google Messages itself, and not so much the RCS protocol. Obviously, making these features standard on RCS would be better if users chatted between platforms or RCS apps, but for simplicity, I've listed all features I'd like to see regardless of whether they'd only be available within Google Messages, or widely available via the RCS protocol. I'm also a big proponent of security/privacy, so any features I'd also want to have privacy restrictions in place if possible.

    Feature List

Features already in development or waiting to be released:

    • E2E Encrypted Individual Messages (very slow rollout so far)
    • E2E Encrypted Group Messages
    • RCS APIs for 3rd- party message clients to improve RCS adoption (Hello Signal?)
    • Pinned Messages, Starred Messages, Auth-codes, and better conversation organization.

Features that would make it more on par with other messaging apps:

    • Message Replies/Threads
      • Like WhatsApp, the ability to reply to individual messages in a group chat.
      • BONUS: Slack-like threads to see all replies to a given message.
    • Basic Syntax highlighting like bold, italics, or bullet-points.
    • Messaging Profile
      • Ability to have a profile picture and name tied to your phone number for RCS. This would be nice given many people don't have pictures for their contacts anyways.
    • Last-seen or Online status
    • Expiring or Self-deleting messages
    • Message reactions with any emoji (like Signal)
    • Better messaging customization features, like chat color, background, etc.
    • Encrypted Backups (unsure if Google One backs up your messages encrypted or not)

Dream Features - Stuff that will probably never happen, but would certainly be cool to have

    • Slack/Discord like extensions (privacy-focused of course)
      • Quick polls, group-chat reminders, the kind of stuff you might see in Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, or iMessage, but much more simplified and without much fluff.
    • Direct integration with Google Photos, especially with photo sharing of albums or individual photos.
    • Dedicated tablet/desktop clients that can work without your phone connected, like Signal.
      • (Probably not possible with RCS since you need to be connected through the carrier and/or Google)

What's on your wishlist for Google Messages?
