A budget/modest gaming laptop in the EU, preferably under 1,000 Euros

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Up to 1,000 Euros, maybe a little more if it's a good deal or if under 1,000 is unreasonable. I might be able to buy from the US as well, but I live in Germany.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is above all important to me. I'm used to macbook pros and I've always had trouble trusting the build quality of PC laptops I've seen. Performance is a close second, then battery life, portability, and a professional look comes last.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not super important, but I would like to stay relatively mobile so I can move easily.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
No, not at all important to me.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly just light to moderate gaming and normal use, like web browsing and netflix. Potentially data modeling and work with maps in the future, but that shouldn't be super graphically intensive. I have my macbook pro for typical use, so this will probably only be used for gaming and windows-specific things.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I mostly want to play indie and retro games, with a couple older AAA titles. The occasional new AAA title would be nice, but isn't a priority. Being able to mod textures of old games would be a great plus. Here's a general list of examples:
      Skyrim
      Dark Souls 1-3
      Fallout 4
      Fallout New Vegas
      Outer Wilds
      Oblivion
      Morrowind
      The Witcher 1-3
      Gary's Mod
      Mass Effect 1-3
      Black Mesa
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      No
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm already deep in the Mac OS world, so I'll be sticking with my current MBP and a new M1 Macbook Air soon, regardless of any PC I may get. I'm primarily thinking about this to see what it would cost to be able to play a lot of my favorite games/because I guess I just like the idea of being able to do anything with a more powerful and versatile computer. There's only a small chance for professional use to be relevant in the future, so if I'm being real with myself, this is mostly a toy and hopefully also something useful. I'm also super intrigued by the Steam Deck, but it looks like that could be a long time, and it's not guarantee of good performance.

College Student here, I am lost on what to get ;(

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:40 PM PDT

Ok so here's the deal, I'm a premed student and am looking for a great laptop that'll last me through medical school. At first I was looking into MacBooks in which I was advised that pro is wayyy greater than air to which the price made it an ehhh but if it's a good investment then why not. Then I realized that MacBooks were not touchscreen which I would like but i feel like MacBook makes up for it by being able to connect to iPhone. Then I realized iOS apps can be totally different from what professors windows apps are. But apple care is also a plus if I get a MacBook. I looked into windows laptops and came upon an ASUS touchscreen gaming laptop, and though I don't game the speed and graphics are good. I'm just tryna get through undergrad medical school with a good laptop (for context my current laptop was like a 2 in 1 and the screws came off and the hinges broke). I just need a good investment laptop and since I'll be nearly broke after this purchase I don't want to make the wrong choice.

If there's anyone willing to help me, bless your heart because I am completely lost and will take any suggestions/advice (esp if you're into laptops ;) ) . My budget is like 1400 but just thinking about it hurts my heart but if it's worth it it's worth it.

Long story short, I am lost and in dire need of assistance please and thank you.

    Laptop for engineering student

      2000 USD, Indonesia

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance and Battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's very important because I'll need to bring it around campus. I think laptop +charger 3 kg

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13/14/15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Solidworks and other engineering app

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Right now I have macbook pro 2017 8 GB RAM 128 GB(unupgradeable), which I noticed that it won't survive for my undergrads degree. I wanted to buy a laptop that last for 4 years++ and I have considered zephyrus G14/G15, HP ENVY 15, HP ENVY x360 and HP Omen 15. I found out that both rtx 3060 (16 gb,1 TB)in G14 worth 1650 USD and in G15 worth 2000 USD. I have read some reddit comments and some of them suggest laptop with integrated and dedicated GPU, which made me quite confused with the difference. I don't have any specific brand in mind. Note : - HP omen 15 rtx 3060 16 gb 1 TB (1520 USD) - I could PO xps 15 for 3 months but I think i cant wait for it.

All-around laptop needed after using my dad's old testing computers for years

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:48 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'd prefer to stay under 10k SEK (Swedish Krona) if possible, but I'm willing to stretch that to 15k if necessary.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life is important, and I'd actually rather not have a 2-in-1. Build quality is important, as is performance, but I'm not doing super heavy stuff.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very! I'd prioritize weight over slimness, but neither is a huge priority.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-16 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Nope, not really!
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope!
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd love a num-pad, which may be an odd thing, and would rather have a large than a cramped keyboard. Touch screen is more annoying than necessary, but it's not a dealbreaker either way. Same goes for fingerprint readers.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm really looking for a solid everyday machine that can handle video and an almost ridiculous amout of browser tabs, that's about it. A reasonably big screen would be nice, but it certainly doesn't have to be a fancy one!

    Thanks so much in advance!

    A gaming ultrabook under £2000

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:48 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget: £2000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, provided it includes a warranty.
    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?
    1. form factor 2) performance 3) build quality 4) battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Significantly, when using it on-the-go I will only have small spaces to use it on.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? 13-14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Gaming, mostly older AAA titles (Bioshock, Dishonored, Fallout 3-4, Witcher 3) some competitive shooters (Overwatch, Apex) and the occasional newer titles (Metro: Exodus, Control).
    • At what settings and FPS do you want? When gaming the laptop will be plugged in to my 4K 60fps monitor. I'd like to get 4K 60fps on older titles, and perhaps 1440p 60fps on new releases.
    • Any specific requirements? All metal build, no plastic housing. USB C connection with display output and power delivery so that I only have to plug in one cable to dock it. I would prefer a glass trackpad.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need a laptop to fill three use cases.
    1. Docked on my desk for single player gaming on my 4K monitor.
    2. Playing competitive shooters on the go.
    3. Playing D&D on the go, for this I need the laptop to run around 8 hours of internet browsing and spotify without having to charge it.

Screen resolution and refresh rate is a low priority as five days a week it will be docked into my monitor.

I am looking at laptops currently available to buy in the UK.

The Razer Blade 14 and ASUS Zephyrus G14 look like the right kind of balance of form factor and performance I had in mind, but they each come in a variety of configurations so I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations anyone might have. Thank you.

High quality build laptop (no MacBook)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:10 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am looking for new business laptops for my team.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - Up to 5k USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      - New models only
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Performance
      - Build quality
      - Battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Weight is important even though I have an iPad.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - Screen should not be larger than 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - Heavy calculations (excel, Matlab).
      - CAD Editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - Nothing in mind but spec requirements will allow for it in any case.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - Great keyboard and high build quality is important
      - SSD storage of 2TB
      - at least 32gb of memory
      - Ideally 11th Gen i9 processor
      - USB-C
      - High definition screen resolution is important (as we do a lot of work in excel, so sharp numbers are important and high definition helps reduce eye strain).
      - Finger print reader for security access (similar to MBP), but this is optional.
      - Touchscreen is not important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - I would like to use 2 external screen when in home office.
      - I remember I used to have a Dell Precision but was disappointed with the hardware quality (swelling in the battery block caused the laptop to basically break open) but they might have fixed it.

I came across the MSI GS66 Stealth. What do you think about this laptop?

    Can't decide between three laptops

Hello redditors, I need a hand.

    My budget: 1200€

    Country: Italy

Usage: Data Science master's degree/very casual gaming

As a Data Science student I would prefer a computer with a major ram and a dedicated graphics card. For this reason I am undecided on the three computers listed in the photo along with their specifications. (Dell Inspiron 15 5510, Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3, Lenovo Ideapad 5)

    Here's the pic: https://imgur.com/a/hdRxvM1

Which one should I take in your opinion and why? Please send help :(

Looking for a laptop that will allow me to have multiple tabs open and run smoothly

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:56 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I would like to stay under $600 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is key… I often have a lot of tabs open and need something that will allow me to have multiple (8-10) open at a time without freezing.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's nice to have something thin, but not a necessity if it makes it more expensive.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Preferably 13" or higher

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I occasionally use paint shop pro to make graphics, but that is not a necessity. No gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      Touchscreen and backlit keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I currently have a Lenovo think pad that is on its last leg. An update was installing, but I didn't have it plugged in and it died halfway through. Didn't think I could save it, but somehow I did, though it hasn't been the same since.

I have browsed some laptops and the Microsoft surface pro looks nice, but the one I found is only 256 storage I think and my husband says I need 512. I worry that I will have to spend out of my budget to get what I am looking for (I am a clearance shopper and don't like to spend a lot, but recognize that in this situation, I may have to begrudgingly up my budget.)

    Hello,

After my old Asus is dead, I´m looking for a new Laptop.

I came across Legion 5 and IdeaPad3 Gaming Laptops since they are on sale in Germany right now, but I´m not sure if using a gaming Laptop as daily driver for "standard" office tasks is necessary or even justified. The things that I find important are 512GB/16GB and at least a Ryzen 5.

      - 13"-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming laptop with good performances and great battery life, for Linux and AAA gaming

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 11:33 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Around 1200 euros

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

As long as i can ensure the battery life is as good as first day, yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performances and battery life are equally prioritized, build quality is second, and form factor last.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It is fairly important, since i'll be carrying this laptop to University every day

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15,6", preferably a 144hz panel

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Yup, some gaming, titles includes : - Upcoming BF2042, XDefiant as well - Forza Horizon (both 4 and 5) - BFV/I - Apex - CS:GO - Watch dogs : Legion - Cyberpunk 2077

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

All of these precedently quoted title, i'd like to run at least 60 fps (i have a free sync external screen), possibly on high, ultra, but willing to crank some things down

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just a nice keyboard, cause i'll type on it a lot

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd like to run Linux as my primary os on this laptop as soon as gaming gets better (for me it'll be around the end of the year) so if it's possible to have a laptop with no OS and full AMD specs, it'd be nice !

I also have a current laptop with a 1050 mobile card and a 8750H gpu, which i can extract from a 256Gigs nvme ssd and 16GB of 2400mhz ddr4 ram, so if i can use these parts in the new laptop, it'd be great, no obligations though

SURFACE LAPTOP 4 OR DELL XPS 13

Btw, i do a lot of multitasking and office work, and i play the sims sometimes. Anyone can guide me which one is better in term of durability and performance for these particular specs? I did look for youtube comments and web published articles but mostly just put side to side comparison, and didnt conclude much about it. 🥲

Hi all , I'm currently in the market for new laptop that will be used primarily for Lightroom and photoshop. I'm looking for something with 1TB and at least 16gb ram. Have a budget of around $1500-$1700. Portability also isn't much of a requirement. Will 16gb of RAM be enough for Lightroom to run quickly and uninterrupted? My current Dell Inspiron has only 8Gb and it takes forever for LR/PS to boot up.

    Thanks everyone

    Full-time laptop…

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:48 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Under 1,000. Would prefer 500-800 if possible.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is ultimately the most important to me, with battery second. Build quality is flexible if the performance is good.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Adobe programs like Photoshop and Lightroom, as well as Sony Vegas. I use Steam and Origin for gaming, but only games like Sims because I've never been able to play anything greater, lol.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    N/A.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm currently a full-time online student whose future and current profession will require them to be online pretty much all of the time, so I'd really like something that will be durable and a good investment. My cousin wants me to get a Macbook, and I'd be willing if it was really worth the price, but I don't know much about laptops to determine that.

Lenovo Legion 5 vs Acer Nitro (CAD 1390 vs CAD 1090)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 04:50 PM PDT

Hello, I am trying to choose between the below laptops. I generally use my laptop for a long time once I purchase (current one is from 2012).

Screen, keyboard, etc: Doesn't matter as I will be using 2 external monitors and wireless keyboard/mice. The laptop will be used partially closed under a monitor stand.

Usage: coding/running programs, playing games (looking forward to Back 4 Blood https://www.back4blood.com/en-us)

Option 1: CAD 1390 (including tax)

    Lenovo Legion 5 Gaming Laptop, 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) IPS Screen, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Processor, 16GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1660Ti, Windows 10, 82B1000AUS, Phantom Black

Option 2: CAD 1090 (including tax)

    Acer Nitro Gaming Laptop, 15.6" FHD IPS,Ci7-10750H, 16GB, 512GB SSD, GTX 1650Ti , Backlit KB, Windows 10, AN515-55-73GS

I am trying to decide if option 1 is worth the extra CAD 300.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1200 USD or less, but I would like to see what's available in the $700-800USD range.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Ultrabook with good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It's not my main concern but I don't want anything too heavy or bulky.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I don't have a screen size preference but I do want a color accurate screen.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will be doing light photo editing, and web browsing with lots of tabs. I'm mainly using this laptop for school.

      No gaming.

I don't need something overkill, I'm just mainly using it for school, web browsing with lots of tabs and light photo editing. And I want a color accurate screen.

Need someone to tell me if these are any good

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 09:11 PM PDT

    Hi fellow redditors..

I'm in New Zealand and need to purchase a new laptop. My knowledge in the computer space is poor at best so would appreciate if someone could tell me if the below laptops would suit my needs.

    Needs

    • I trade the financial markets and the programs do tend to make a computer grind if left open for extended periods of time, but that being said, they're not as bad as video editing software or anything intense.
    • I use photoshop, illustrator and lightroom. It's mostly photo editing etc but it's imperative that whatever laptop I get can run these. What I use these programs for is minimal compared to, say, a graphic designer.
    • I game occasionally - no intense warzone or anything, but more to cure boredom. This isn't a biggie but would be nice to run the original quake or something!
    • I quite often have 20+ tabs open on Chrome (yes I'm one of those people), spotify, a couple of trading programs and a word doc or two open all at the same time.

To summarise - I need something with a bit of grunt, but I'm no streamer. Would appreciate any help - even if you can tell me what specs I should be looking for etc. I figured a gaming one would work given that if it can run games, surely it could run what I need, right?

That being said, would the below suit?
