    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1500 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build and performance most important but bonus points for ultrabooks
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Moderate. Doesn't need to be ultra light but portability is a plus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13-14" wouldn't rule out 15" but tends to be a bit large
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Last 4 laptops have basically gone back and forth between the Dell XPS 13 and Macbook Air. Been a pretty avid supporter of the XPS 13 and had assumed I would buy another until I started reading reviews on the new M1 MBA and it's performance. Historically macs have been a little overpriced but this one packs a ton of power and the last macbook air I bought was a tank - lasted me a solid 4 years. Meanwhile, the last XPS I bought as well had more issues with than previous laptops - keyboard needed to be replaced, had to do fresh install several times, etc. Still works but has issues on start up at times, tends to really overheat and freeze when doing anything intensive or running several applications at once.

Wondering if anyone else was debating the XPS13 v MBA? Also, although my usage tends to be resource heavy in terms of number of applications running at once, generally don't game much or do any video editing, so not ruling out going for a more budget option like the Acer Swift 3.

Is 8gb RAM sufficient for a college student?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:42 AM PDT

    •I'm getting an M1 MacBook Air 512gb

    •I don't play games

•Double majoring in Econometrics&Economics (I need to deal with lots of data- Excel spreadsheets/ Google sheets)

    • I plan to keep this laptop for as long as possible until I graduate. I'm planning to do a masters. So this laptop should last for 7 years.

How I use my current laptop everyday: 1) google docs, slides, sheets (2 tabs) 2) Going on safari (6 additional tabs open) 3) WhatsApp (background) 4) Apple Music (background) 5) Mail (background)

I have an iPad Pro which I use to multitask. I open web pages, use Zoom, and watch YouTube there.

    Is 8gb ram enough?

    Software Engineering

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:07 AM PDT

I am a software engineering student in my junior year of my degree and I'm in need of a new computer. After searching around and reading threads here I've decided to go with a Macbook Pro. I chose this due to the versatility of using Linux and Windows bootcamp since I don't know specifically which language/OS/field I'll land my first job in.

    Here are the specs:

    -16" Display

    -Intel Core i9 8-Core (9th Gen)

    -16Gb RAM

    -1TB SSD

My counselor (I am a Veteran and using the GI Bill) requested a nod of approval from an industry professional saying that this computer is compatible and a good choice of hardware. I understand its a question regarding hardware advice and that its not a black and white answer but rather about preference.

I know that this is a good computer but I am only looking for someone to say "Yes, this is a good computer to get you through school and your early career" to satisfy my counselors needs. I will use this not exclusively for developing but general computer use also. It doesn't need to be a novel, just a quick statement; I would need an email stating that you recommend these computer specs and maybe your job title in the Software Engineering/Developer world.

I can message you or the other way around!

I appreciate you all a ton

    2019 Predator Helios 300 a good buy?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:02 AM PDT

I'm looking into getting a laptop mainly so that I can play with my gf's brother. I found a 2019 Predator Helios 300 (RTX 2070 max-q, i7-10750 H, 2.60 GHz, 16 GB) for 6000nok ($700) Games I intend to play are Fortnite, Apex, Overwatch, Warzone, and Battlefield 2042 when it comes out. My main concern though is longevity/futureproof. I watched some gameplay videos and it seems to handle them well on high settings.

$1000USD (can bump it up a bit if I need to, and can wait a month or so for a sale/in stock)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:16 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000, pref less, but can bump it up a bit (MAX $1500, only if absolutely necessary), and can wait a reasonable amt of time for sales/laptop to be back in stock
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance>build quality>battery life (ideally 6-8h min)>form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not super important, it'll be in my lap, at home, the vast majority of the time (so hopefully reasonably cool running).
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Prefer 14-15.6, but open to the right 13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
some light video editing, nothing too crazy though. Unsure what software I'll be using. WILL be running multiple VMs, not sure if that lands in this category or not.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
MUST BE RELIABLE!! A good keyboard is mandatory, ideally backlit (but not a deal breaker if it isn't).

Minimum 16gb RAM, min 512gb SSD (ideally 1tb!). Prefer either core i7-11th gen or Ryzen 7 4700u CPU.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Newly back to school & planning to attending grad school immediately after, along with taking cyber sec courses on the side. Must be able to handle many, many, many chrome tabs open at the same time (need to be able to access research quickly while writing papers, etc), plus run multiple VMs & misc other apps without massive lag time or freezing.

Absolutely have to have min specs of:

16gb RAM (bummer but not a deal breaker if soldered, in a perfect world it'd be upgradeable )

    512gb SSD (much prefer 1tb)

    CPU = core i7- 11th gen OR Ryzen 7-4xxx

Will be in my lap most of the time, so prefer decent cooling built in.

A couple of USB2.0s would be great - need to be able to attach an external numpad if one isn't included, as well as external webcam for proctored exams etc.

A numeric keypad would be a nice bonus (or something like the numpad on the ASUS Zenbooks), but not make or break.

HAS to be reliable & well built enough to get me through at least 3 years of finishing under grad & grad plus a few years after without becoming obsolete or flat out dying on me would be terrific

I posted a few weeks ago, got some great suggestions, then realized I could use an external numpad when needed -duh! Was encouraged to repost with the new reqs, since that opens me up to smaller laptop options :) This sub is filled with a bunch of really knowledgeable people & I appreciate you giving your time to help narrow down the search!

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

    Laptops for University and Gaming

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:21 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1,200 CAD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Possibly, as long as they are from a very reliable source.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I need a long battery life for long days at school. I've seen many people in this situation look for ~6h if that's enough for uni? I'm not entirely sure. I am also looking for good performance for school and for gaming.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't care that much, but the lighter the better I guess if I have it around campus.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Maybe 15 inches, not super important as long as I can play on it.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Regular microsoft office stuff, anything for school. As for games, Valorant (mostly), Overwatch, Minecraft, Dead By Daylight, Fortnite. I hope to be able to run these along with discord simultaneously.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mainly Valorant and Overwatch. I'm alright with running lowest settings as long as I can see enemies. Medium would be great though. Mainly just want consistent 60fps or above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'm looking for an ethernet port and HDMI port. Anything else necessary for gaming that you can think of, but I'm not exactly an expert.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm not super strong in terms of knowing what I need for gaming, so anyone with a strong suit in that would be helpful! Thanks!

Looking for a laptop for gaming and University (computer science degree)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:18 AM PDT

Hi I'm looking to get some recommendations for a laptop for use in University ( Computer science degree) and, as a avid gamer, can run the games I play commonly.

My budget is around $1000-$2000 and am hoping I can get up to 2 recommendations, 1 I. The low $1000s and the other in the high $1000s. (This is in SGD where $1usd is about $1.35sgd)

I'm not exactly sure what type of laptop I need for a CS degree but since I'll be in uni I'm hoping for a portable laptop hopefully less then 2kg and with a battery life of around 5-6hrs(more would be even better).

The games I commonly play are "Destiny 2", "league of legends" and "Osu"(Wanna be able to play these at on at least on 60fps) also others such as "ori and the will of the wisp", "monster hunter" and "sekiro, shadows die twice". (Optional). All of this my PC can be run smoothly with a ryzen 5 3500 and gtx 1660S amp.

In terms of build quality, I don't know what to look for but I'm ok with someone plain (not really a rgb person) with a nice touch/feel to it. For the screen size I'm looking for a 15.6 or 14inch. I find the 13.3 too small and honestly the 17.3 seems quite bulky to carry around.

I'm not sure if I'm asking to much for my budget but hopefully I'm able to get some solid recommendations. My uni starts next year August though so if you think the best option is to wait till a later date to buy a laptop please do share ur reason and thoughts on why. If you have some recommendations that's slightly above $2000 it's fine too. Thanks for the help. :D

Help to buy a work laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:03 AM PDT

Hello, Reddit community! Due to Covid I have just been made redundant by my company in London, they are taking away my work laptop, and with the job marketing being so bad I have decided to try and go freelance which is terrifying but exciting! So I need to buy a laptop of my own - the lovely Matty McTech from @ setupspawn on Instagram told me about this forum and said someone might be able to help me. I work in marketing, so I need something good with Microsoft suite, I spend a lot of time in spreadsheets. I also usually have about 7 programmes open and 15 chrome tabs - on a good day. I might have to edit artwork occasionally but my main focus is definitely spreadsheets, powerpoint etc. My work laptop is an HP Elitebook i7, which has been fine, but I don't know how it benchmarks against other laptops. Budget: less than £1k more than £600. I would be SO grateful for any advice on what I should buy. Also if anyone wants a freelance subscription marketer, I am AVAILABLE!! 🙃

I also plan on using this for college as well so I don't want anything to stylized.

Gaming laptop (Power > Portability) $2000 or under (United States)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:08 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $2000 Max

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance over everything. I'm basically looking for a gaming laptop to be a desktop replacement. I'll typically be plugging the laptop into a monitor, and I'll pretty much never use it on battery life. The only reason I don't want a tower is because I switch locations several times a year and I want the computer to fit into my on-flight carryon (while not taking up the entire bag).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I want to be able to travel with it, but as far as laptops go I'm ok with clunky. See above.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches or larger. I'll usually be hooking the laptop to a monitor but I'll occasionally use the screen.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just gaming. I have a different laptop that I use for productivity. I don't plan to do any video/photo editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

For games, I'd like to be able to play current demanding single player titles (like RDR2) and upcoming single player titles from the xbox series x/ps5 generation at high (not necessarily max) settings at 60 fps, 1080p is fine. The only reason I'm looking for a laptop instead of a series x/ps5 is because there are several PC-only titles I also enjoy playing (DotA, LoL, WoW) and I prefer to play FPShooters on a PC.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just want a gaming system. No touch pad, no optical drive, etc.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Right now I'm eyeing the ASUS ROG Strix G17 with the Ryzen 9 5900HX, RTX 3070, and 16GB RAM https://store.asus.com/us/item/202101AM090000007/STRIX-ASUS-ROG-Strix-G17

But . . . its sold out everywhere and doesn't seem to be restocking frequently. Other suggestions on par or better would be appreciated.
