What makes the fan curves on Linux so much better than on Windows? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:04 PM PDT Before switching to Pop! OS and then to Manjaro, I was running Windows 10, where even sitting on the desktop or opening a web browser was enough to make my laptop's fans spin up. But on every distro I've tried, my fans stay off until I'm ~60% on my dGPU or ~70% on my CPU. I'm running proprietary drivers on Linux and my laptop is fast enough that Windows' CPU overhead shouldn't affect my system that much, so why is watching a YouTube video with the "silent" fan preset the equivalent of running Doom at 4K on Linux in the noise department? I still need to dual boot Windows for programs for my courses that don't run on Linux so understanding what is causing this difference would be great. [link] [comments] |

Installing Manjaro KDE with Virtualbox Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:58 PM PDT Hello, I've been trying to install Manjaro KDE (21.0.7) in a Virtualbox machine. The boot with the .iso file and the installation within Manjaro is working fine, but once i'm rebooting it after the install process, it asks me again and again to install Manjaro as if i never installed it. I'd be really glad to understand why i can't reach the step after the installation process and then run Manjaro normally with the user that i created before the installation process. (I'm booting Manjaro with open-source drivers) Thanks you! [link] [comments] |

Messed up an Arch install and can't access BIOS anymore. Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:03 PM PDT Hey there, So, today I finally got a brand new PC and decided it was finally time to try installing Arch along with W10 in it. All was going fine until I finished installing GRUB and tried rebooting the PC. When I tried accessing the BIOS to change the boot priority, it just wouldn't work anymore, all that would show up was a black screen with a little cursor indicator. I did some searching on the internet and, supposedly, this could be fixed by deleting the grubx64.efi file in /boot/EFI. However, I can no longer access any Linux installs due to the BIOS being unaccessible. I do, however, have a working Windows install. My question is: is there any "easy" way to fix this? Would just deleting the ext4 partitions I created (both the root and boot ones) work? (Also, this is a laptop, so opening it up and messing with the parts is kinda out of my reach). Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

How to remove triplebooted linux without messing up GRUB Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:23 AM PDT I have a ssd with windows-opensuse dualbooted now I wanna try FreeBSD but I want to install it on a different partition cropped from opensuse's partition rather than over opensuse's partition. Let's say I don't like it and want to remove it now, what should I do? I know if I simply delete it's partition grub will fail (learned it in the hard way btw :D) [link] [comments] |

Audio doesn't work though headphones Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:23 AM PDT Hi everyone, I've recently installed Manjaro i3 and ran the "install_pulse" script to get pulseaudio working, but no sound will play through my headphones. Pavucontrol shows my (Xonar) sound card as a selectable option, recognises when my headphones are plugged in or unplugged, and shows a fluctuating sound bar when I play music, so it seems to think that sound is playing. Can anyone help? [link] [comments] |
Could have systemctl poweroff impact a BTRFS file system? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:02 AM PDT Hey all, tl;dr see title please. longer version: I use openSUSE Tumbleweed with XFCE installed on a SSD formated with BTRFS. I mapped one Key of my Keyboard to trigger systemctl poweroff to shut down my system. Could there be any negative impact or something i dont have in mind? If so what would be better? My Internet research on this wasn't helpful enough yet. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
How to get my Netgear A6100 working with Ubuntu 21.04 Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:34 PM PDT Note: I am an extreme noob with Linux and not super good with computers. Hello, I have finally installed Ubuntu Linux and everything was fine until it said I wasn't connected to the internet. I had this problem with windows as well so I ended up getting a netgear but the problem is I can't find any drivers for Linux and I'm pretty sure they don't have any do you guys know how I can get Netgear working on Linux? Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Can't boot after switching distro on dual boot Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:13 AM PDT I was running Ubuntu 21.04 alongside Win10 on my Asus (VivoBook S14 - i5-1135G7) laptop for a while. I decided to switch to Manjaro KDE 21.0.7 today. I did not have my homefolder in a separate partition, instead i just backed up the few files that i wanted to keep to another computer. So i just need to remove the Ubuntu partition and install Manjaro and everything should work? Well it didn't. The boot menu loads and works fine, I can boot into Windows in the different looking boot menu but Manjaro doesn't boot and shows errors (see the pic). I installed Manjaro by overwriting the existing Ubuntu partition and then tried to do the same again but overwriting the Manjaro partition. It was basically just removing the partition i chose and then automatically created a new one to install to. Didn't need more than 2 clicks. I also saw the old Ubuntu in the boot order, but that shouldn't matter as long as Manjaros boot is on top? Any tips? [link] [comments] |
I require some help with choosing my distro Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:32 PM PDT I have settled for either Solus Plasma or Solus Budgie. Huge thanks to everyone who replied! Hello I've been mainly a Windows user for a while now but around last year I got interested into Linux operating systems, for a while I had Linux Mint on my laptop which is not my main machine and I mostly used it for ocasionally watching YouTube videos using retroarch, etc. Then later on switched to Manjaro because I liked the way it looked on default without having to mess around with it too much. Now introductions aside here comes the problem.. Lately on my computer that until tonight ran Windows 10 whose specs are quite dated: AMD FX 6300 which is not overclocked so it bottlenecks my Strix RX470 8GB video card and I think it has 12 GB DDR3. Problem is that Windows started being a little too annoying to use, I like the idea of having Linux as a main machine and probably a KVM for apps that I absolutely cannot get running on said OS with wine or other alternatives that I probably don't know of. I have tried Pop OS today and I must say I don't like the interface (which I am well aware I could modify) and I absolutely hate the window snapping feature therefore I am currently considering getting another Distro the question is: sigh out of all 200+ distros out there which one could I use daily mainly for playing games that most importantly is Ubuntu based (cause Manjaro gave me a hard time with its arch stuff) has a simmilar interface to Windows 7 or 10 by that I mean the little start menu thing and I also would prefer it to be somewhat decent looking right after installation (Now don't get me wrong I know I could make most if not any distro look like it's a movie trying to project the future but I don't think I'd enjoy spending my 1st hours with the os working on the way it looks and all just cause it doesn't have something I was familiar with on windows) Thank you for wasting your time on reading this I highly appreciate it. TL DR: Looking for a distro that is Ubuntu based which is simmilar to windows and has somewhat of a good look to it [link] [comments] |
What's better for a laptop with discreet GPU, Ubuntu or Pop OS? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:13 PM PDT It will be my daily driver, with the most GPU heavy task being AutoCAD. I've only used Debian until now but my new laptop's GPU is causing issues while installing Debian. Now I understand Linus Torvald's frustration with Nvidia lol. [link] [comments] |
