Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:50 AM PDT Following the sticky post advice I installed Ubuntu Desktop LTS 20.04 on an old laptop running Windows Vista also adding a 250GB SSD to help things along. I was able to access shared folders on WHS 2011 and things were humming along and then... When attempting to install codecs last night (the command is highlighted in the web page behind the terminal window) the procedure halted with a EULA as if waiting for a response from me but I see no way to respond. When attempting to close the terminal window I was warned that a procedure was ongoing and I didn't want to interrupt that. It was late and I was sleepy and being a complete noob with Linux I left it and went to bed. It's still waiting for a response this morning. A little help for a noob? Edit to add image. Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:37 AM PDT So, I have two displays. One (my primary) is a cheap "1080p" TV from China that is unbranded. I have no clue what panel it is and the OSD is very limited. My secondary display is an Acer AL1916W (I know it's old, but it does the job nicely and was free). I've been getting irritated due to the colour differences, and have tried to fix them myself using the nvidia-utils color correction settings. I tried messing with the greens and the blues, but couldn't get too close. I can't find an ICC file or whatever they're called for my primary display as I have zero idea on what panel it is. As far as I'm aware, my second monitor is calibrated a LOT better and the colours are more true-to-life (and match up with my S10+ when I hold my phone up to it). This is the difference we are talking. The left is calibrated, the right is the issue (the blue on the right seems to have been made a little worse by my phone camera though. Does anyone know enough about this to be able to help me? Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated, many thanks! [link] [comments] |
Hi! What linux should I put on my laptop? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:26 AM PDT I have a now old laptop, from 2014... Since I got my new fancy desktop with rtx and powerful ram I haven't been using it cause it became too slow for me xD, but approaching summer I want to be able to work not at home. I only want to use it for work - Blender and VSCode are the only required programs. In order to keep things simple, smooth and fast, what is the best linux distribution? I heard some of my friends talking bad about ubuntu so I wanna ask reddit to be sure... If possible I would like to know not only what is the linux that suits me, but where can I find a easy installation .iso or something ready to be burnt on a dvd and installed from windows, that wipes out the previous contents of the laptop (all files backed-up already!) System specs: 1 tb hard disc drive (damaged) Intel core i7-3610QM cpu @2.30GHz RAM 8gb Gpu NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M P.S. if this is not the right sub plis point me to it!! Sory for bad engrish [link] [comments] |

How to check state of SAS disks on the physical server? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:10 AM PDT Hello. There is a Dedicated server, it has 2 SAS disk by 146 GB. Independently need to monitor the state of the disks. I decided to use SmartTL, but I don't quite understand the conclusion of some information. Health checking seems to show that all right: smartctl -H /dev/sda smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [x86_64-linux-4.19.0-13-amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-17, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART Health Status: OK smartctl -H /dev/sdb smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [x86_64-linux-4.19.0-13-amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-17, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART Health Status: OK But... smartctl -a /dev/sda smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [x86_64-linux-4.19.0-13-amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-17, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Vendor: FUJITSU Product: MBA3147RC Revision: 0103 User Capacity: 147,086,327,808 bytes [147 GB] Logical block size: 512 bytes Rotation Rate: 15000 rpm Logical Unit id: 0x500000e01b717ab0 Serial number: BJA0P8502D8M Device type: disk Transport protocol: SAS (SPL-3) Local Time is: Sat Jun 5 09:40:29 2021 EDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. [openbox] Maximize terminal on autostart ? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 06:26 AM PDT Ok, so I have a rather unique case ( at least so far as I have found on the internet ). When I do startx, it executes openbox-session, and that in turn runs `~/.config/openbo/autostart `. What I want to happen is that a terminal opens in full screen when openbox-session starts. I dont want it to be fullscreen every time I open a terminal, just want it be fullscreen when it autostarts. I added `urxvt -e tmux & ` in my ` ~/.config/openbox/autostart ` Oh yeah, also posted this on r/openbox, but have no responses... soooo [link] [comments] |
Reinstalling Pop! after awhile. Error says I didn't create a BIOS partition? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:27 PM PDT I swapped to W10 after I started a job that required Windows-exclusive software. Linux suits my needs much better, and I can run everything I need with Wine, so I want to reinstall Pop. I'm not deleting my W10 part yet in case I screw something up. The Pop! installer doesn't offer an option to create a BIOS partition, but it gives an error when I try to install. Is there a way I can fix that? The only options are to use parts for /, /home/, and /boot. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:16 PM PDT I just installed the Manjaro i3 and everything went great except I don't have tickboxes(I don't know what to call them) in any application. I'm on 5.11 kernel. I changed the kernel, font, font size. Nothing seems to work. Here are some photos. [link] [comments] |
Losing all customisation on external monitor Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:47 PM PDT I installed Kubuntu 20.04 on my laptop (i5 5200u, Nvidia 820m, 4GB RAM) and am intending to use it more like a desk computer with some portable capability if need be, and therefore, have removed the battery and use it with an external display. Here's where my problem begins. I set up the panels and wallpaper to my liking on my monitor but everytime I restart, it goes back to no panel and a black wallpaper on my monitor. Is there any way I could make the customisations stick, and for the laptop to default to the external monitor only upon booting? I understand that doing so on a hardware level (by disconnecting the ribbon cable) will be the easiest solution to my problem but as bad as the LCD may be, I want to keep it in case my primary laptop ever gives in. Just received a 2015 MacBook Air - help replacing Catalina with a lightweight distributor? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:47 PM PDT So I already have a Mac but was just given another old one to play with linux. I noticed a weird behavior with Network Manager that I hadn't seen before with it, Malware? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 08:53 AM PDT Hello, people and thanks in advance. Today I noticed that network manager connects automatically to a unknown ethernet network when there is no physical ethernet connected to my laptop, this network is named "enp3s0" and I checked how is configured, and in the IPv4 Settings tab it is set with the method "Manual" and has "169.254.2.226" as the adress and "16" as the netmask and the "Gateway" space next to them is colored yellow. This ethernet connection dissapears completely form the network manager when I connect a real ethernet to my laptop and appears every time I start my computer. I installed network-manager-gnome directy from the Debian Stable repos so I really don't wan't to think it is some malware trying to connect me to a shady server. I don't know that IP and I never configured it that way, why is my computer doing this? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

How to read TexInfo files from glibc repo ? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:19 PM PDT Hello, I'm attempting to learn how to read some of the documentation for glibc (https://sourceware.org/git/glibc.git). Is there any problem in dual booting windows and linux? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:31 AM PDT Hey, I'm completely new to Linux, I've used Linux in past but not much. Currently I use windows 10 and I have been looking into various Linux distros that I want to start using. I would like to start with dual booting, but I don't know if it'll create problems down the line. I have a SSD that I use for windows installation (C drive) and a 1TB HDD which I use for my steam library so should I install Linux along side windows on SSD or do it on the other drive? Will installing Linux on the same drive cause problems? I'm really a noob when it comes to Linux so any help will be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Running an existing OS in a Gnome Boxes VM Posted: 05 Jun 2021 10:53 AM PDT Cutting to the chase: Trying to make a VM in Boxes that boots from my dad's old Windows Vista hard drive connected via USB. I'm a recent Fedora 34 convert who is pretty comfortable using both Boxes and Virt-Manager (but not that great at editing XML files). I'm fine with having to make a system image as long as I don't have to boot into Windows for it... This drive is about 15 years old and likely a pandora's box of viruses... [link] [comments] |

Ctrl + L to Clear Screen in Alacritty Posted: 05 Jun 2021 10:20 AM PDT As the title suggests I want to Ctrl + L to clear screen in Alacritty. I went through the documentation and the example config file, and nothing seems to work. There is no predefined action for clearing screen, and i tried using command to call the clear program and that didn't work either So, has anyone of you done it ? [link] [comments] |

As a new linux user what should I take care of? Posted: 05 Jun 2021 08:32 AM PDT Yesterday I switched to linux, XUBUNTU. I use LINUX on my old laptop. So I basically deleted whole windows, and installed XUBUNTU. So I want to know that is there any things I need to take care while using Linux? Things to do/not to do? And also.... Is there any way I could make a backup of whole LINUX, in which I have customised and installed all apps? In such a way everything remains like that in my other laptop (in which I would migrate after buying a new.) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:23 PM PDT I made a drive with balena etcher . (32gig mint cinnamon) Which is lightning fast. But records no data. I made another with pendrive's universal USB installer 123. (16gig mint cinnamon) this loads slows, even to boot up. browsing the web makes it crash/lag. And if I shut it down it's just vomits autopilot code matrix fast foreve it seems. Like verifying each byte. But it seems to save. My question is ... What's the right software striving to obtain a bootable drive that's fast and the best of both. Thx for your time.
