    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I considering on buying a lenovo legion 5 pro for college and gaming, i think i gonna get the base model from the lenovo education store.

So the base model has 16gb ram, 512ssd storage, rtx 3050 graphic card and ryzen 5 5600h processor which total up to ard 1700+sgd after the education store discount.

So should i get the base model or get the model with Ryzen 7 5800h processor and the rtx 3050ti graphic card (cost an additional $150)

Also should i get their extended onsite warranty 3yrs for an extra $80?

Pls advice me cause i dont really know much on these laptop stuff, thanks in advance

    Need a laptop for Dvds

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:28 PM PDT

I am converting a ton of VHS tapes to DVD so I now need to purchase a laptop that I can then play them on. I do have an external DVD player. Is it better to use that or get a laptop with a dvd drive? Would I need to purchase some type of software either way? I would also use it to edit and download photos.Thinking of Walmart or Amazon. Hopefully $700 US or less. I don't need anything fancy but a touchscreen would be nice. Just want to save the kids memories. Thanks so much!

    ASUS Vivobook Flip 14 (512GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 5700u) for $750 New

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Is this a good deal? Looks like RAM is upgradable. There doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews on this laptop. Does anyone know how ASUS's 2-in-1s compare to the rest of the industry?

    Would you recommend 512 SSD, 16gb, i5 or 1TB SSD, 16gb, i7 on a 14" ideapad 5 (2021)?

They cost 850 and 1050 USD respectively, and I'll have to use it for at least 4 years. Thanks!

Dell G3 randomly changes graphics cards while gaming

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:02 PM PDT

I got dell G3 3500 like a week ago and the first game i got was Star Wars the fallen jedi and minecraft. while i was playing Star Wars at first everythings fine, nice fps totally satisfactory but like 1 hour of playing the game starts to got low fps until it crashes. In the case of Minecraft it starts nice, playing on 150fps aprox but some time later got very low fps. So i checked the task manager and i found that while the fps got very low, i was using the graphics cards integrated and not the GTX 1650ti. Some days later i found out that it only uses the GTX only while the charger its plugged in. it is possible to change this? i mean, i cant play and use the GTX if im not charging. it is normal? I would appreciate if someone help me

The specs are Dell G3 3500 CPU Intel Core i5 10300H 8 Gb Ram Nvidia GTX 1650ti 512 Gb SSD Nvme

Looking on to buy a Laptop

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 05:14 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'll keep it simple, I'm a data science student and I'm planning on to get meself a new laptop

My budget is around 1500-2000 USD, not going to game on it, I was initially thinking about the M1 macbook pro but then apple being apple and one thing I've learned is not to get them first gen products and also it has a few issues on it like say the SSD issue and restricted to one monitor and also coming to python, some of the libraries are nearly impossible to run and it's a headache downgrading them. I hope you people might help me find a laptop.

    Thank you

    Love you ppl

Oi mates. Specs: i3 5005U , Intel HD Graphics 5500, 4GB RAM, 2 HDD. Has to be plugged in always to operate. Probelm: periodic fps drops on ALL games, associated with the fluctuate of temp and CPU usage. Im taking LOL as an example, using Quick CPU and TM. Any idea how to solve? Thanks (pic captions)

    Dell G7 Ventilation Issues

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:15 PM PDT

    Hi,

My girlfriend bought a laptop around 5 months ago from Best Buy - the Dell G7 (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-g7-17-3-300hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2070-max-p-512gb-ssd-rgb-keyboard-black/6416473.p?skuId=6416473). The laptop has had issues with ventilation since purchase, but the issue only became a major problem recently after I saw the FPS she was getting and pointed it out to her. She's a novice when it comes to tech-related issues and so didn't realise that the performance she was getting for the price of the laptop ($1600~ish) wasn't okay. She mostly plays Fortnite, Final Fantasy XIV and Genshin, with FFXIV being the game that caused her to notice the extreme frame dips herself.

We contacted Best Buy Geeksquad, but they were little help; initially she was told the issue was with her wi-fi (it wasn't, we checked), and when we took it back again, she met with two different agents and was given two different responses - the first was that there was a hardware issue relating to the ventilation (which we've since confirmed to be the case), and the second was that the computer was simply running games too powerful for it (this isn't the case, as the laptop contains an RTX 2070 and these issues were occurring even when games were set to their lowest settings.)

She took it back again, and this time was told that gaming laptops just aren't meant for cooling and that she would have to optimize it (we have). It's been very frustrating for her to be told these conflicting statements and the situation has left her incredibly stressed. Obviously we could crack it open and reapply the thermal paste, but I live in the UK (she's American) and she doesn't feel confident enough to. This is non-negotiable. We've tried every optimisation we can on a software level, bar underclocking, which again, she doesn't feel confident enough to do. So, we're left with three options:

    1. We can send it into Best Buy for up to 4 weeks for them to 'fix'. Not ideal as she's coming here in July-August and has little time when she gets back before she's back in college (which she needs her laptop for) to sort things if Best Buy continue to hoodwink her.
    2. We can try buying a cooling pad for the laptop, but the ventilation issue is so extreme that idk if this would counteract it.
    3. We can refund the laptop and buy her a new one.

What should we do, Reddit? If so, are there any other laptops you can recommend for this price point?

    Thank you.

    G510 extremely slow POST

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 08:05 AM PDT

My Lenovo G510 POSTs extremely slow, and simetimes not at all.

    What I have tried:

Removing the HDD and disk drive completely,

Reseating the 2 RAM sticks, trying them 1 by 1 in both slots,

Pressing the Novo/OneTouch Recovery button thingie before, during and after pressing the normal power button,

    Unpluging the keyboard,

    Unpluging the WiFi adapter

Any ideas what else I could try?

The CPU fan spins, the monitor seems to work. The laptop usually does POST at some point (5 mins or so) so I think most parts do work.

    Thanks!

    Decent laptop for $700?

Sweet spot between budget conscious and quality

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT

I'm wondering in your experiences, what is the sweet spot between price and quality. I see decent ASUS vivobook laptops for around $650 CAD ($540 USD), but some reviews say they're cheap plastic and the screen bends.

I use this for programming and browsing, not games or anything CPU intensive, so I'm not too worried about the actual hardware inside (I'd really prefer AMD but that's another conversation), I'm more concerned about the quality of the enclosure, and the battery life. What price range do you think I should plan for? USD is fine, I can convert.

Also looking for opinions on the ones with the least proprietary crap necessary. I'll be running ubuntu, so I don't want to need a ton of unusual drivers to get the function keys and touch pad working. My old acer is fine for this, but I've ran into issues with some laptops.

    Question about docking stations

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:38 AM PDT

    Hey!
I ordered an Amd laptop with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports to use a docking station with. I want to plug in my cam to stream, which goes through an HDMI capture card with 1080p/30fps. Simultaneously I want to have an external monitor running with 1080p/60fps.
My first question is – is it possible to have outgoing and ingoing data going through a single USB port and will my laptop recognize both the camera and the monitor?
And secondly, if it's possible: Can you recommend me docking stations with two HDMI ports?

    Thanks in advance!

How do I go about replacing a laptop screen?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 10:34 AM PDT

I ordered an Acer Aspire 7 from Amazon and it came with a pressure mark. I'd ask for a replacement, but they're out of stock for the next month. The in-stock date keeps getting pushed back and I'm afraid it won't ever come back. I really want this particular laptop so I'm afraid of returning it and getting nothing in return.

The manufacturer warranty won't cover it. I have Asurion but I don't think they'd cover it either. Basically I'm considering getting this fixed myself and paying for the repair. But I have zero clue how to go about it. Does anyone have any advice?

Laptop GPU and CPU Utilization Dropping Out While Gaming

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 06:36 AM PDT

Recently Ive been having an issue with my HP Laptop while gaming. While in a game my framerate will drop to 3 to 9 FPS for roughly 5 to 10 seconds then go back to normal (around 50 FPS) for about the same amount of time. I checked my GPU and CPU, using both Task Manager and Afterburner to see a graph of what was going on. As I suspected, my GPU and CPU were going down to about zero Utilization.

Here is a video to show what is happening.

Ive owned this Laptop for about four years and have only recnetly started having this issue. It isnt my primary gaming source as I have a traditional PC setup at home. Ive only done light gaming on it from time to time when I go out of town and on very low in-game graphical settings, as it isnt a very strong Laptop.

I cant seem to figure out what is going on to cause this. Ive looked up about ten different Reddit threads on other people having this issue, or issues similar to it. Ive tried just about all the suggestions Ive seen to no avail.

Below is a list of potnetial solutions I tried.

    - Playing around with the graphical settings in Destiny 2 (including Resolution and Window Mode)

    - Using a fresh install of Windows 10

    - Opening up, and reseating my RAM sticks

    - Updating my GPU drivers using GeForce Now

    - Uninstalling GeForce Now

    - Switching where the game was installed from an NVME SSD, to my Hard Drive

    - Playing the game while I connected to a wall outlet via charging cable, and while not connected

Im at my witts end. Im starting to accept that it just might be that time where its dying and it might just be time buy a new laptop. But Id like to run through anymore potential options before I do so.

Some things Id like to note:

    - My temperature in game seems to hover around 60c. Much cooler than Ive used it to in the past.

    - I tried playing on both Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: Cold War. Same issue both times.

    - The issue seems to be slightly less active while in non graphic intensive areas (in-game), but still very much present.

    My Laptop Specs:

    - HP Envy 17inch

    - Intel Core i7-8550U

    - GeForce MX150

    - Windows 10 OS

    - 16gb DDR4-2400 SDRAM (unknown Brand)

    - 1TB 7200 RPM Hard Srive

    - 1TB NVME SSD (Added by myself, this is where the OS is installed)

It would mean so much if anyone could porovide any insight as to why this might be happening. Thank you for your time.

Lenovo y530 not booting from SSD

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:46 AM PDT

I have got a new nvme ssd and cloned the hdd into it using macrium reflect. (both are 1TB GPT, had no issues there)

I can see it in the bios under the EFI section and set the nvme to be on top. yet somehow when I boot, it boots from hdd rather than the nvme.

    what can I do?
