    Comparing laptops

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:21 PM PDT

Hi, I'm looking at the following laptops:

    1. HP Envy 15, i7-10750h and 1650 ti, $1285
    2. MSI GS66 Stealth, i7-10750h and 2060, $1500
    3. Legion Slim 7i, i7-10875h and 2060 Max-Q, $1440 or $1800 (not sure which it will be)

These are my concerns with each:

    1. Envy: Weird keyboard layout (small ~ key), possibly bad cooling (I heard the 2060 Max-Q model has great cooling but not sure about this one)
    2. GS66: MSI hinge issue (don't know if it applies to this model or not), even weirder keyboard layout, very loud fans on the 300hz model (I'm getting the 144hz version)
    3. Legion: Possibly bad cooling (seems to vary from person to person) and terrible battery life without deleting a bunch of processes (again, seems to vary)

With that said, I have some questions:

    1. Is the keyboard layout on the GS66 difficult to get used to? How non-standard is it, really?
    2. Does the GS66 have the MSI hinge issue?
    3. How is the cooling on the Envy and the Legion? (I know the GS66 is cooled well)
    4. What are some good ways to extend the battery life of the Legion besides deleting those iCUE processes?
    5. Does the 144hz GS66 suffer from loud fans?
    6. Ultimately, which should I go for?

    Thanks in advance!

Is there a non numeric pad version (touchpad) of the asus ux433 series?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:58 PM PDT

A seller here is selling a used asus ux433f laptop. He sent me some images of it. The touchpad doesn't look like the original one because the numeric pad label on the top right was not there. Does the numeric pad label removed easy? Does asus has a non numeric pad version on the touch pad? I also saw some spare touchpads of the same model on asus official website, they also didn't had that numeric pad labelling where one touch to activate the backlight numeric pad.

Need helpful input on a potential laptop buy!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:24 PM PDT

So I'm a 3d student at the moment and have been choosing between two laptops to do work on in my spare time and for class, I'm struggling to decide between two laptops rather than a PC just for portability sake.

    HP Envy x360

    AMD Ryzen 7 // 16GB RAM // 512 Storage // Raedon Graphics // 15.6''

    ASUS Rog Strix

    AMD Ryzen 7 // 16GB RAM // 512 Storage // GeForce RTX 3060 // 17.3''

I'm leaning towards HP because of the stylus and the potential to model on the screen however it's not as powerful i dont think as the ASUS and would love some input of your guys' opinions on these!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:14 PM PDT

Ive been using Lenovo L340-15IRH for 6months, and the specs are i5-9300HF 2.4ghz, NVidia GTX 1050 3gb, 8gb RAM

As I've seen other people's L340 with same model as mine have this Integrated GPU of Intel UHD, but as Ive checked mine I don't have any Intel UHD gpu.

    What would be the problem?

Is playing in other aspect ratio, like 4:5 while my screen is 16:9, does doing this will affect my monitor in any negative way or will it hurt/damage my graphic card ?

I am a college student at the moment I have a Lenovo Ideapad 3 15 Inch with RAM of 12.0 GB

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:18 AM PDT

The battery is not the best, I am not a computer person, but I would like to know the basics, because I am thinking on selling it to get a another laptop, the one I have does the job but I just would like to upgrade to something "better" or is there anything that can be done to the lenovo to be better? I also changed my major to IT so any advice about what would be the best laptop or would I just stick to the one I have already.

I would really appreciate the helplol

Is 65-80°C a good GPU temp during gaming?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:30 AM PDT

I play Overwatch on about 80-90 FPS. My GPU temps hit 80° max. Is that high? ( If so how so I reduce my temps without sacrificing performance)

Ordered Hp envy x360 13 for college turns out it has hinge issues.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:13 AM PDT

I was looking for a laptop for undergrad. I wanted a fast, durable, and 2 in 1 laptop for notetaking purposes. Almost all the sites reccomended the hp envy x360 13. It was selling for pretty good price on the hp website, so I brought it. Then I fell into the rabbit hole of hinge hell. Users having issues and hp not helping. I tried to cancel my order, hp doesn't do that. What should I do? Should I return when I just get it or ?. Also any recommendations? I am a public health sciences major and will be doing pretty regular stuff with my laptop. I do want to note take on an electronic device tho. I want a durable, fast, laptop that is portable and has good battery life. My budget is 1200-1300 us dollars. Better yet should I be worried about the hinges on the computer?. A lot of reviewers said it was durable. The computer I order is all aluminium bulid with the touchpad being plastic. please help i am desperate. Thanks in advance!!

Why are there high tier laptops with 8GB of RAM in 2021?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:39 PM PDT

At this point it's really a scam. They charge you 250$ for a 8->16 update so you can have a decent system

Want your opinion about a laptop

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 11:32 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a student and I'm looking to buy a new laptop. I've been using a cheap hp laptop that was offered by my region but it's quite slow so I'd like to find a new one. I'd like it to be able to run games like Kerbal Space Program, From the Depths and War Thunder but also to have a touch screen to draw things like graphs and diagrams in class.

I've been thinking of getting an Asus ROG flow x13-gv301qh-k6042t . I found it online for around 1350 euros (1650 dollars). It has a gtx 1650, an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, 16 giga of ram, a 512 giga SSD and a 13.4" screen.

I know very little about laptops so I'm not sure if it's too expensive or if it is a good deal. I also don't know if it is too overkill to play war thunder and KSP or not.

Installed new SSD on Asus laptop, touchpad not working

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I decided to install an SSD to a replace a HDD in my Asus i3 laptop. I bought the laptop when I was in Thailand.

Asus makes things really hard to replace so I had to pop the back off. This included disconnecting and then later reconnecting ribbons.

I installed the SSD and this seems to work. However, my touchpad is gone. I have to use an external mouse.

I tried unplugging and replugging the ribbons. Does anyone have any advice? Maybe I destroyed that particular ribbon?

I will be purchasing a laptop soon as my main computer. Last time I had a laptop as my main computer, Bill Clinton was still president.

I guess I added the last part to illustrate how long its been. I am excited to use a laptop again after so many years on desktops and an imac back in 2008.
