    Macbook M1 or Asus Zenbook?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:36 PM PDT

I have heard so much about the new M1 chip, and i've heard the new macs are good deal. However, after reaserching a little bit, i found this Asus, for the same price, but twice the RAM and SSD.

    Macbook Air 13 (2020) : M1, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD

    Asus ZenBook 14 UX425 14" FHD: Core i7-1165G7, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD

What do you think? I have never owned a Mac, nor a Asus, what are your experiences? I need a lot of RAM for 3D modeling, doesn't really need the memory.

    Thanks for the time.

Review of Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 (15in, 16gb, 512gb SSD, AMD Ryzen 5700u)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:03 AM PDT

I bought the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (15in, 16gb, 512gb SSD, AMD Ryzen 5700u) in India. Here is my review about it after using it for about 2 weeks.

    Build:

    • Full plastic build. Metal Lid. Matte finish. Feels great and solid.

    General things:

    1. Initially I had some problem with the speakers when they would stop working and I had to restart the laptop to fix. I got a driver update a couple days later, haven't had that same problem in the past week.
    2. The fingerprint can be a hit or miss sometimes due to its design, I then added my fingerprint from multiple angles so mostly works but sometimes have to try again.
    3. My unit had some backlight bleed on the bottom right corner noticeable when in a dimly lit room at above 70% brightness. Not a problem for me since I dim the screen to around 30% in the dark. This will vary by laptop though.
    4. Speakers, touchpad and keyboard are great.
    5. Another nitpicky thing was that the Wi-Fi was taking around a minute to connect after waking from sleep mode. (This problem might just be with me since I have a Wi-Fi 4 router). The fix was to go to device manager, select the network adapters, find the Realtek Wi-Fi card, go power management and uncheck "Allow the computer to power off this device to save power". Now it connects in around 5-20 seconds.
    6. I have a problem with OBS recordings. It seems that OBS is recording at same volume as windows master volume. I haven't been able to find a fix for it. Every program I tried which captures audio from speakers to record/broadcast (OBS, XSlit, Anydesk) have the same issue which has led to conclude it is hardware limitation. I also tried capturing audio through a virtual audio cable and it works properly. If you have a fix for it, please let me know.
    7. The product description states that it has Bluetooth 5.0 but the device manager says its Bluetooth 5.1.

    Expandability:

I opened mine up coz of curiosity. The internal design is the same as last years version.

    1. The RAM is soldered in dual channel. (Task Manager)
    2. There is one M.2 NVME SSD slot which is already populated with the 512 GB SSD.
    3. There is a space for an HDD but it doesn't come with the SATA cable installed, the SATA cable will need to be purchased separately to install a hard drive within the laptop.
    4. The laptop comes with WI-FI 5 and not WI-FI 6 unlike last years version. The WI-FI card is upgradable if you need WIFI 6.
    5. The internal battery can also be upgraded to 70 Whrs version. However note that if you do upgrade, it will occupy the HDD slot aswell.

Battery life estimates from 100 percent battery (70% brightness):

    1. Watching movies (Chrome with 5 extensions - 1 tab open, discord, telegram, anydesk, qbittorrent (idle) in background, Battery saving mode active from Vantage software) - 9hrs
    2. Moderate Multi tasking (Listening to music, actually using chrome, discord, qbittorrent (downloading) and a bunch of other background programs, Intelligent cooling mode from Vantage software) - 6 to 7 hrs
    • Note: I use my laptop on conservation mode all the time so it charges only to 60%. The battery life is based on the time it take to drain the laptop from 60% to around 30% and multiplying that by 3.
    • The conservation mode is not customizable. That is a feature only for the ThinkPad lineup probably. Its either 60% charge or 100% charge.
    • Also, I absolutely love the conservation mode, no other brands have this Asus and Dell also have it according to the internet. My laptop remains on the desk most of the time so I don't have to worry about it remaining on 100% all the time and shortening battery lifespan in the long run. Before you tell me that laptops cutoff power from battery once it reaches 100% percent and takes it directly from the AC adapter, I know that. But it is indeed better for a battery to remain on 60% than 100%.

Fans (In an air conditioned room)

    • On Battery- The laptop fans are completely off when watching movies. They may or may not turn on when multi tasking.
    • Plugged in- The fans only turned off when set to Battery Saving Mode.
    • Fans are inaudible (if they do turn on) when doing basic tasks in a room with air conditioner running, only slightly audible with the air conditioner off.

    iGPU:

    • Out of the 16gb ram, 2GB is dedicated for the iGPU, this can be changed in BIOS to 1GB or 512 MB.

Link to Lenovo's Spare parts website of this model. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/in/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/5-series/ideapad-5-15alc05/82ln/parts/display/compatible

    Lenovo Power Management modes:

    • Extreme Performance- TDP is 35 Watts.
    • Intelligent Cooling- TDP is 25 Watts.
    • Battery Saving Mode- TDP is 15 Watts.
    • On Battery, these mode don't make any changes. Max TDP is 10 Watts irrespective of mode. I did notice that Battery Saver Mode turns on the fans later than the Intelligent cooling mode which is I guess nice if you're trying to save battery.

    Performance Benchmarks (Plugged in)(Extreme Performance):

    • Cinnebench R23
      • Multi Core - 9655 points, 3.65 GHz across all cores, Max: 85 C, Power: 35 W
      • Single Core - 1245 points, 4.3 Ghz single core, Max: 70 C, Power: 10 W
    • Crystal DiskMark- 2481 MB/s Read, 1726 MB/s Write

Performance Benchmarks (On Battery)(Modes didn't make a difference here):

    • Cinnebench R23
      • Multi Core - 5166 points, 1.8 Ghz across all cores, Power: 10 W
      • Single Core - 515 points, 1.8 Ghz single core, Power: 3 W

The CPU does not turbo at all on battery. There is a significant drop in performance in benchmarks. I get that you shouldn't be running all core loads on battery so I did expect that drop. However, the single core score is absolute shit.

Apart from the benchmarks, things like loading web pages, video playback do function properly while on battery.

If you wanna know something else about it. Please let me know. I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

    EDIT: Added Benchmarks.

Question on the Macbook Air 13.3 Inch (M1 Chip)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:46 PM PDT

    Hey!

I'm 17 years old and when I was 14 I got some Windows laptop which was at that time €1000, I could game on it normally untill a year after purchase, games simply lagged too much, Chrome was already turning the laptop into an airplane engine, and the boot up just took an absurd 15 minutes+.

Now a few years later with only my phone, I really need something to work on, such as: School, my job & just generally for texting and being available etc etc. I noticed the Macbook Air 13.3 inch was around €1000 and is perfect for students, but I just wanna know, can I also play games on it? Not games like Ark or GTA etc, just some light games like IO games & Minecraft. (Without lagg)

Also, I neved had anything else besides windows, will I miss certain things? Or does Apple straight up just do it better?

Short summary: 1. Can I play games on it without problems for the upcoming years & 2. What are things to notice when switching from an old windows laptop to a new MacBook Air 13.3 inch.

Thanks in advance for anyone who leaves a reply! :D

    Drowned laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Hey guys, I have a Lenovo yoga 720-13ikb that was caught in a flood around a year ago. It hasn't been booted since then and hasn't been touched. As of right now, it shows no signs of life what's so ever even when plugged in. That I know of, right now my options are

    1. Get a new motherboard

    2. Put it in the oven to re-solder everything.

If anyone can give me some tips please do so. Thank you!

Do all laptop batteries swell after two years, or is this a dell thing?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:22 PM PDT

Dell Latitudes (including my own) are having many reports of batteries swelling after a year or two. Everyone says "it's normal, all the new laptops use this new type of Li battery" but is it true? Do I have to expect any laptop I buy these days to have an expanding battery, cracking the case, after two years?

Coming off of a Latitude with a second swelling battery...

new laptop wont do 280hz on external monitor

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:29 PM PDT

I recently upgraded from a ASUS g14 4900hs/2060maxq to a ASUS m16 11900h/3060. My g14 would allow my external monitor to do 1920x1080 at 280hz. My m16 will only allow it to do 1920x1080 144hz. I am using the same HDMI cable for both laptops. The g14 laptop screen is 1920x1080 120hz and the m16 is 2560x1600 165hz.

I thought maybe it was just too much for the m16 to do both 2560x1080 165hz and 1920x1080 280hz so I lowered the resolution/refresh rate on the laptop screen but still doesn't let me do 280hz on the external. I understand I will never see anything close to 280fps but I want it to run at what it's supposed to.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this issue?

Should I buy additional RAM for my slow laptop?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:03 AM PDT

Hi. I am a medical student who cannot afford to buy a new laptop. My current laptop is sooooooo slow and would sometimes freeze (Asus X541UV, Intel Core i5-6198DU 2.30 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Windows 10, 64-bit OS x64-based processor). Using it would sometimes be frustrating.

Should I buy a 4 GB (or a 8 GB) RAM to make my laptop usable for at least three more years?

It needs to be able to handle multiple docx, xlsx, pdf, and edge tabs open at the same time for what I do.

    TYIA!

    Laptop video processor

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:42 AM PDT

I've found a laptop I'm looking at buying but it comes with two options. The prices and specs are identical with the choice of either

    Ryzen 5 3500u Or Intel i5 1035G1

When looking them up the Intel is clearly the better processor. What has me debating which to choose is the GPU. The Intel comes with Intel UHD graphics to the Vega 8 on the Ryzen.

While reading the Vega 8 has much better reviews to the UHD graphics which has led me to an impass.

I'm not looking at major video editing just some GoPro footage and maybe some raw 4k footage from a drone as and when I buy one. It will be for personal use and fun rather than content creation or professional work. So not needing rapid creation times etc.

So do I go for the more powerful processor or better graphics? Advice is greatly welcome please!

    Lenovo Ideapad 5 AMD R7 5700U or Lenovo Legion 5 AMD R5 4600H?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:55 AM PDT

I went to the store to check out the Lenovo Idepad 5 (with Ryzen 7 5700U, 16GB soldered RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.6 IPS 300 nits screen) and the Lenovo Legion 5 (with 4600h, GTX1650, 8GB upgarable RAM and 15.6 IPS 250 nits screen). I liked both of them and the Legion had a very manageable weight for me, a little heavier than the Ideapad but not "heavy".

I am not planning on gaming and want a laptop mainly for computing tasks, dev work, a VM or two and a lot of open browser tabs. I want the laptop which will work smoothly in the long run, won't have software and compatibility issues (with Linux for example) and a good keyboard for typing.

Both are priced very similarly (around 900USD if converted from our local currency). Which should I go for?

    Or should I buy a HP 15S laptop with an Core i5-1135g7, 8GB (4x2) RAM, 256+1TB, MX350, 15.6 IPS 250 nits screen for a 100$ less? Or an HP 14/15S with a Ryzen 5 5500U, 8GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), IPS 250 nits screen, 512GB SSD for almost 200$ less?
