UPS/battery backup to mitigate brief power flickers that causes modem to power cycle? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:14 PM PDT Hey all, first off my apologies if I use incorrect terminology. I know just enough about home networking/electricity to get by. I recently switched from the xfinity-provided gateway to a purchased modem and router (Arris T25- refurbished for $60- and TP-Link AC1750). They work great, but I realize now the one benefit of the old gateway was that it had a battery backup. The power to the house is fine normally, but we occasionally get very brief power flickers. Like all the lights dim for a split second, I hear the HVAC pause, then resume again without issue. The clocks on the stove etc don't even reset. Unfortunately, even the tiny blip results in the modem turning off, which means internet & phone are out for 3-5 minutes while it boots back up. Does anyone have any suggestions for a small, cheap UPS/similar device to mitigate that issue? I don't need it to last more than a few seconds, and it would just have the modem/router plugged in. Or is the only answer to get a full-fat UPS that's overkill for this purpose? Any suggestions/links would be much appreciated, thanks again! Wired my house with CAT6 cable. Any cheap way to verify the cables are running to spec? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:14 AM PDT I don't have any devices that support over 1Gbps and I installed iperf and saw that it's nearing 1Gpbs on the 2 devices tested. I tested the cables using a cheap Ethernet continuity tester. Any way to verify speeds without buying expensive hardware? Does it even matter? Edit: Thanks everyone! Seems like the concensus is to ask a friend for help if they have the hardware, otherwise if it's working fine at 1 Gbps on current devices there's nothing to do but wait to acquire more capable hardware down the road. WiFi Deauth with Possible MAC Spoof Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:43 PM PDT Hi everyone I have a quick question. So I just confirmed that I have been getting relentless WiFi deauth attacks. I am pretty sure this is from a tenant that lives beside us that we have pending for eviction due to nuisance when the moratorium finally ends. However I want more proof before notifying my attorney, my ISP and the proper authorities. WireShark was able to provide me with a MAC address and I used the filter wlan.sa "attacker MAC address" to find the SSID name of the attacker. However when I use a WiFi scanner to locate the strength of the router, the SSID and MAC address do not show up on the scanner. Could the attackers MAC address be spoofed and if so how do I reveal it? Thank you. I am a complete novice and learned all this stuff just to catch this person. I really want this nightmare to end. New House, Mysterious Box and Drops Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:58 PM PDT Hi there, My wife and I just purchased our first home and finally got access to it today, and I found this interesting cable box in the downstairs closet and could use a second opinion as to what I found. The house has a Direct TV satellite on the roof, and in one of the bedrooms, an AT&T broadband wall plate and standard DSL cable coming from the wall (labeled Data Cable). Each of the bedrooms has a wall plate with two coaxial drops. In the downstairs closet however, things get a little wonky. There is a wall box with an ICC bracket that has five coaxial cables going into a splitter as well as two sets of five Ethernet cables that are going....somewhere? There's only one Cat5 drop in the house, so I'm kinda stumped. If anyone has any idea as to what I'm dealing with and can advise, that would be great. I plan on heading back tomorrow with tools to take a look behind the wall plates to see what I can find, but again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to the panel: [link] [comments]
very close to the MSAN cabin still having high attenuation Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:31 PM PDT Hello , so I live in Egypt and I am not sure if this is how the connections works every where but basically I have a vdsl subscription the line comes from the msan cabin (underground ofc) and travel beyond my "Box" -- I am not sure what's the box is called in English I think it might be dp box but it have some screws in it too not the punch in method, basically it distribute the line coming from the copper cabin to 30 ~ 50 telephone lines or so for 2 or 3 buildings -- travel another 100 meter or so to the copper cabin where another copper wire from there turn around and return to my box doing the math and considering that the space between the msan and my box is around 70 m the total distance shouldn't be more than 300 meter still my line reads a whooping 20.4 attenuation what could be causing this and is there anything I can do about it ?photo of my line readings [link] [comments]
Wired backhaul over a hub for Asus XT8 Mesh? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:31 PM PDT Hello! I am looking to upgrade the wifi in my home (currently using the default Fios Wifi 6 router and seeing less than optimal results). I have been looking over various options for wifi, and believe my best bet is to use a mesh network that allows wired backhaul, and the XT8 seems to fit that bill perfectly. The problem is that the cable coming from the router will be in a upstairs bedroom. I have a Cat5e cable run from the bedroom to the basement, that is connected to a Thank you! What do you call your home wifi ssid? Dangers of using family name? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:24 PM PDT For the last few years, I've used the family name and appended the use (e.g familyname-home, familyname-guest etc) and not thought much of it. I'm setting up a new system and just wondered what other people name their wifi? Is there any security risk in using your family name? There is a very strong random passcode and there aren't many houses around so anyone who is close enough to pick up the wifi probably knows we live here anyway. Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:33 PM PDT So I've noticed something with my wifi. About every 2-3 minutes sometimes quicker, there is a huge lag spike. It's pretty consistent across both of my Mac computers. I'll be playing a game and boom, 800 ping for about 5-10 seconds. Then my ping will return back to normal. It's especially annoying while using nvidia geforce now. The stream will freeze for a few seconds like there is a huge lag spike. Something else that's interesting is that it doesn't occur while using Windows. I have set up windows with boot camp on my personal Mac and when I use nvidia GeForce now on the windows side, I don't have any lag spikes at all. The router I'm using is the newest Apple airport. I am willing to provide more details if needed. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:52 PM PDT Hey all! Finally ready to get into the prosumer side of things for my new network in my new (to me) home after moving. The previous setup was very simple, DOCSIS 3.1 modem (I own, not rent) running to a TP-Link AC3150 router. Single level home, about 2400 sq ft and I had an AC750 range extender so that the far side of my house had decent coverage, mostly for a Ring Spotlight cam. Internet was Cox gigabit. Had a few hardwired things but because the router was well located I didn't need a switch or anything. At times I had around 50 connected devices on that network. My new house is more complicated - split level 3500 sq ft. I'll wind up with more devices as I'm using Homebridge to make more things homekit compatible and I'm really ramping up on home automation in the new house. So all the new complexity has me considering a more prosumer route. A good friend has a great Ubiquiti setup and he's priced something similar out for me and it's pretty tempting, even though it'll cost me $2k+. As I was looking into alternatives I found Omada. I've been using TP-Link since 2014 so I like their stuff and the idea intrigued me. So I sat down and priced out a system based on what I think I'll need and it came to around $1100. But what I don't fully understand is what would I get out of the Ubiquiti setup that I won't get from Omada? I know enough networking stuff to be dangerous but I'm not sure I know enough to really maximize what I'd be buying if I went Ubiquiti. That, coupled with their recent security issues and the total overall cost and overkill have me leaning Omada. Sample Build: Questions - do I need the controller or can I go straight cloud? What's the benefit of the controller? Also can I use a different, cheaper router like the TL-R605? What's the downside OR what's the benefit of the ER7206?

Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:28 PM PDT Random and maybe dumb question as I'm no expert in this realm, but I'm still using a Zyxel EMG3425 router bought from my ISP from ~4-5 years ago. Had new modem put in from ISP as the old one cratered. Considering the router is now even older than that old modem, when does upgrading hardware become worth it? We've had intermittent outages that I think are partly ISP but mainly router related. Especially 5GHz. That band seems to never work anymore. Need help choosing a wireless router, Should I get a place holder for 6E? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:07 PM PDT I want to upgrade my wifi router from a WNDR4500 (Which is close to the end of its life cycle) to something with Wifi 6/E. I saw a router with wifi6E but it was for 600 USD. Should I wait until more 6E router that are more cost friendly? If so whats a good place holder until more 6E routers to come to the market? The main use for the router is to surf the web and to host my small Plex server. Moving house, different connection, is my router useless now? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:00 PM PDT Hi everyone, im pretty novice when it comes to network related stuff so i thought id ask here. Right now where im living i have HFC internet so im using an asus ax-88U router which connects to the nbn box through the wan port. Im moving to a new house in a couple days and it only has FTTN there which runs through the phone line. I was wondering if it was possible to use my router still or if i needed to buy a modem router? And if i had to buy a new one, would it be possible to get a cheap modem router and still use my asus router for the wifi and ethernet? Sorry if this is a simple question but im just stumped and how to go about it, i dont want to give up the awesomeness of the asus router. [link] [comments]
Mikrotik and Unfi6 LR AP POE - WTF ? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:54 PM PDT I finally got a UnFi 6 LR in stock and gave up on an edge router-x so I got a Mikrotik hex s According to its docs, its capable of up to 57v @ 500mA UniFi 6 Long-Range AP specs say it needs only 48V @ 500mA to power itself. But when I use a factory made cat5e cable on port 5 (poe out) and even force it to power on , I get nothing on the U6. no led, no nothing. Am I reading something wrong here, or its this 2 companies using a proprietary version of an open standard? I guess I could just wait again for an ER-X to come in stock, but the mikrotok meets my needs at home, and the poe and SFP port are something i hoped to use. Am I SOL ? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:34 PM PDT So i have a cable router(without wi-fi) in my living room which delivers LAN to one computer there, and i have a second lan cable from that router to my PC in my bedroom. The third lan cable from my router goes into a powerline adapter and the second adapter is in my bedroom so i can have Wi-fi. My problem is : this wi-fi connection is slow and unstable. ( i have a 500mbit connection) and the wifi is 30-40mbit at best. my question now : can i just plug in a lan cable into my main router, and then plug the other end to a different router (with wi-fi 6) and get a working connection on the PC in my living room, bed room and have wi-fi? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:39 PM PDT So i live in a "rural" area even though shopping centers are 5 min away from me, I used to have at&t a few years ago and they said they were canceling our service and now we're stuck with Hughes net. Being a gamer it absolutely devastated me, I was wondering if at&t was able to service me is there any way i can get internet that isn't satellite? Or am I goner, I've talked to spectrum whose service ends 1100ft from my house but said they would need to lay new lines down resulting in a 110k+ bill. Connecting NAS through router instead of modem Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:18 PM PDT I recently moved, and took my Synology DS920+ with me. Once I was settled in the new place, I set about reconnecting the NAS. No settings had changed before the move, either on the NAS or the router. Howver, after plugging the NAS in to the router at the new place, I could not connect to it at all. I had to connect it directly to the modem, as the modem now had the ip address associated with my router at my old place. I have tried changing the addresses on all three so I can connect the NAS directly to the router like I had it before. It works plugged into the modem, but I'm constantly having problems accessing the network drive I mapped when installing he NAS. It constantly disconnects, and when transferring files TO it, the write speeds are atrociously low (2-3MB/s over Wifi, whereas before they were at minimum 30-40MB/s over wifi.) The only thing that has changed is the modem. Any help would be appreciated. I'm about to start pulling my hair out. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:13 PM PDT So I have the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and the netgear CM500. And my wifi keeps going out here and there. So is there any setting I need to change or just get a newer router? So can anyone help me out? [link] [comments]
Why does it take a day long internet outage to figure out what doesn’t work? Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:14 PM PDT I can't even stream from my Plex server to my Roku with the internet down, and I can't even fix it without the internet being up. I can't cast to my google device locally for the same reason. For the love of god, I can't even use airplay! I guess I'm going to spend the weekend working on my emergency settings for when the cable modem drops out. Until then, I'm stuck watching "tv" streamed to my iPad, while the roku fish tank plays on my big tv. All because big business wants to control every little bit of data they can. Looking to switch from Virgin Media Hub 3.0 to TP-Link Archer AC1200 Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:18 PM PDT I'm not certain of the details above, I just want to check if this is really an upgrade or if I should go bigger, I got the AC 1200 for €99 and I'm sure some of you know where I can get it cheaper but I wanna support the local networking shop. Hoping someone here could provide any impartial insight there into what is involved here, I tried do some research for myself but these things seem very much not apples to apples when comparing routers. We should be getting gigabit from Virgin but in practice it is nowhere near this high, my laptop will peak at 20mb/s down over WiFi in a speed test and almost 24 hours a day it is much much lower. Are there other routers that you might recommend instead? The shop had another AC 1200 for €39 and I passed on it for the name I knew but obviously that can be a mistake. I have the receipt etc and it's all still in the box and plastic wrap. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
