Networking your home series. Part 2: Ethernet

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:03 PM PDT

The next in our series of articles on networking your home. How to run and install ethernet.

In part one, I covered why we'd want to do this. This article goes into how to run the cables, using keystone jacks, and wiring up into a patch panel (a great way to terminate cables in a single place).

    https://citizenupgrade.com/posts/networkingether/

Part 3 will be about selecting some pro-sumer equipment (vs all in one boxes, and some suggestions there as well), and Part 4 will be some settings and my experience with the Ubiquity gear I finally selected, pros and cons!

I know folks love to hate on Ubiquity ... and there are good reasons to do so, even some I've found ... but overall I've found the "right" settings (so far).

Why does my PC want to automatically connect to Wi-Fi name "Hidden Network"?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:06 AM PDT

My PC will automatically connect to a Wi-Fi signal calling itself "Hidden Network". It always has full strength signal with a black shield exclamation point icon over the signal strength indicator.

Now for a REALLY STRANGE thing.... I can be connected to MY network and "Hidden Network" at the same time. Also "hidden network" shows this when I click on it. "This wi-fi network uses an older security standard that might not protect you"

This is my home internet and router and obviously "hidden network" is not my network name.

Is this a security risk? Just seems strange

    Thoughts?

    AT&T Fiber Cable Replacement Question

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:30 PM PDT

I just got AT&T Fiber installed a couple weeks ago. The gateway is one of the newer BGW-320 gateways that don't require an ONT box.

I'm trying to move the gateway to the opposite side of the room but the stock Corning fiber cable is too short. I ordered a replacement on Amazon that is much longer, however, I'm not sure it will work because it is listed as a single mode. According to everything I've read, it looks like AT&T uses a multimode cable as opposed to a single mode.

Does anyone have any experience with replacement cables with these gateways? Will the cable I ordered work?

Sudden Connectivity Drops Via DOCSIS 3.0 modem - ISP claims Cable Modem Flap

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:20 PM PDT

My home network needs improvement, nonetheless there is an issue we are facing a few months now it comes and goes but still very disturbing.

A bit of background: we have a modem+router DOCSIS 3.0, 500Mbps/10Mbps bandwidth. There are times, when the network connection slows down really badly (down to 5-10Mbps) or even completely disconnects. This comes down to the point when there are days we really can't work/watch TV/play games etc.

Since this is really frustrating and we should not experience this, we have been in touch with the technical support of our ISP multiple times.

To summarize: The representative claim they see in their graphs that our gateway suffers multiple Flaps, they claim it is a problem in our gateway device so we have replaced it. The problem is even after 3-4 different devices we have tried the problem persists.

The last technician was here yesterday in purpose of helping us find the problem. He simply disconnected an amplifier from the wiring closet and claimed it will fix the problem (ofc he lied).

I asked him to measure the signal strength and he reported that at the entrance we have 60-70db and at the router connection point it is 55db. These doesn't say anything to me - are they too low or are they fine?

A hour after he left we had to reconnect the amplifier back again since the connection became very slow.

So from inspecting my wiring closet I can tell that the coax cable runs through 2 3-way splitters which spread throughout the rooms in the house. It is also connected to an amplifier, probably since we had weak signal somewhere in the past.

Another guess of mine is that the moca adapters might cause disturbance?

As frustrated as I am, I am reaching out to hear maybe you guys can have any experience/ideas how to solve this issue. We have considered to move onto the competitors ISP which provides VDSL connection but it is only up to 100Mbps, so we passed this option.

ASUS Router: Client Isolation for *wired* clients?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:17 PM PDT

A wi-fi network I manage already has client isolation turned on to prevent clients from talking to each other. However there are also a couple untrusted PCs (without Wifi adapters) plugged in via Ethernet. Is there a way to have "client isolation" (or equivalent) for wired clients as well, so that they can only send traffic to the router and not any other device on the network?

I'm using an ASUS router w/ the Merlin firmware. I don't know enough about VLANs to know if that is the proper solution, or if its even possible on this router.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Ethernet suddenly stopped working after bad atorm

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:55 PM PDT

I have an Ethernet running from my basement to the top floor of my house, where my PC is. It was connected to an Ethernet switch, and recently after a bad storm it gave out completely. I've actually never had problems before, yet it decided to stop working. I tried resetting all network adapters and settings, I've plugged the Ethernet directly into my pc (as opposed to in my switch) and tried several IP commands through command prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? The wire does run outside of the house for about 10 feet, but I don't know if the storm actually ruined it because my PC recognizes that I am connected through Ethernet, it says there is no IP configuration.

Need a top tier prosumer router/firewall... 2.5Gbps WAN and uPnP

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:58 PM PDT

So in my problem Ive been handed, a person with brocade switches, in their office/studio, also has 4x vidya consoles and a ton of IoT stuff.

They are getting an upgrade to 2.5Gbps from cable and I need a firewall/router that can take that, and then distribute.

They need uPnP or their devices are angry. The only device im finding that can serve this role is the Ubnt UDM Pro, which is on backorder until infinity. Currently they have a Fortigate 60F that broke all their consumer devices because no uPnP.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Im just not seeing anything out there that does big speeds and also prosumerish.

    Picture detection?

Is there any way one could setup a network or some kind of "system" that could detect pictures taken from a cell phone just by the phone being inside of the home without it being connected to WiFi?

    Is this possible?

Confused on modem max download speeds

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:31 PM PDT

I'm currently searching for modems for my apartment. I was looking at the Netgear CM500 as it advertises a max download speed of 686 Mbps (more than enough for one person and my service).

Here is the official product page. (https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/modems/cm500/)

However, when I go on sites like Amazon (product link) and newegg (product link), the CM500 model is listed underneath the title as 300 Mbps max download.

Am I misunderstanding the concept of max download? Are these two numbers different concepts or is it a merchant/posting error? TY

    Wifi speeds

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:36 PM PDT

Guys I'm gonna be honest, I really don't think this is home networking material, but maybe there's some guru. Idk man, I really just don't know where to ask and I figured why the hell not.

Anyway, meat and potatoes. For years I've used an lgv20. Well, multiples because I am notorious for breaking them and bought more on ebay. So, it was a flagship phone. My home internet connection runs at about 115 (100mb plan, they give it 115) , and I've never seen it truly run at anything less than 90.

Well, I finally bought a new phone. A moto g8 power. A budget phone definitely, but seems to be similarly spec'd compared to my v20. Wifi speeds never exceed 65ish on it. I have another phone for work, another flagship, which confirms my internet is good and the moto phone is not taking full advantage of the speeds.

I often run speed tests on faster internet connections, but get similar results factoring in scale. What I mean is, when I expect a speed test at 115, I get 65. When I expect a speed test at 415, I might get 180.

So I mean, its obviously capable of more than 100, right? Why would it not get 100 at home when it gets close to 200 elsewhere?

To clarify, I know it is the phone. My laptop and work phone both consistently get around 115

I even got another budget phone which I am using now and it's the same thing as the moto, like to a t

    Thanks guys

Site to Site VPN for off-site backups - virtual OPNSense Instances

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:17 PM PDT

First time posting here. Thanks in advance for comments or suggestions.

Living abroad and have a small Proxmox Server setup at a friends house in the states. Intending to use the server primarily for off-site backups. Thinking of going virtual on both ends with my OPNSense Router/FW installs and nailing up a WireGuard Site to Site VPN between them specifically for backup traffic. One challenge I'm seeing is the remote site in the states will be behind a NAT gateway, which with proper port forwarding, I'm thinking won't be a problem. The other potential pitfall is the fact that at the remote site the aforementioned NAT gateway does not support any sort of dynamic or static routing configuration. However, once again I'm thinking this is a non-issue as my backup VM's on the remote side will be on the inside interface of the OPNSense instance that terminates the wireguard tunnel.

So logically, my setup looks like this:

Home Network <-> OPNSense <-> Internet <-> Netgear Cable Modem/Router <-> OPNSense <-> Remote Network (Virtual Machines/Containers inside Proxmox connect via Linux Bridge/vSwitch)

    Many thanks...

    Internet access in shed

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:27 PM PDT

I'm trying to see what the best solution is to get a stable and decently fast connection to a shed in my backyard would be. Running ethernet isn't really an option, so I was considering either a mesh network or just using a single strong wifi access point (maybe something from Ubiquiti?). I want to be able to watch videos either from youtube or netflix while I'm in here which is why I'm seeking something a little more robust. Any advice would be appreciated.

    intermittent packet drops...too many devices?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:51 PM PDT

I have a Netgear Nighthawk AC2400 router and a 300mbps ISP package (cable modem is in bridged mode). I'm trying to narrow down an annoying issue with intermittent packet loss.

I have about 30-odd devices on my network--phones, laptops, FireTVs, Echo dots, smart TVs, IoT devices like oven and fridge, etc. Just about everything connected via Ethernet (about 5-6 devices, via an 8-port gigabit switch) is on the lower floor of our bungalow; the rest that connect wirelessly are on the upper floor, which is about 1400 square feet, and which is also where the Netgear router is. Just my wife and I live in the house--no kids.

For most of the time, everything is stable and great and I get full 300mbps speeds. Occasionally, without warning, I'll get intermittent packet loss (10%), and speeds will dramatically slow. There's no way to predict when this happens.

I've been in touch with the ISP and they have checked everything and swear up and down the modem is fine and the issue is with my network. I've powercycled the modem several times (as well as the router and switch). I've checked all cables, they're all at least CAT 6, and I've even swapped some out in various spots, so I don't think it's a case of a bad cable.

So that's all the background. My question is--is it possible/plausible that having, say, 20 devices on the 2.4GHz band of the router could cause problems like this? Right now, everything is loaded fairly evenly--15 devices on the 2.4GHz band, 15 on the 5GHz band--and things are smooth. But when I've checked at other times, there's times when some devices seem to prefer connecting onto the 2.4GHz band, so there can be 20-odd devices on that.

I've tried setting up a separate wireless access point with an Asus AC66u in Access Point Mode, but it didn't seem to work too well--because it's relatively close to the primary router, most devices just seemed to hop onto the WAP, rather than splitting the number evenly. Maybe I just configured it poorly, I don't know--I've never really played around with WAPs. In any case due to the configuration of my house and the location of the devices, there's not really any sense putting a WAP in any place other than about 20 feet from the primary router, which seems to me to defeat the purpose.

So I guess I'm just first of all wondering if this is plausible that the sheer number of devices is causing an issue. If it is, then I'm wondering the best way to address it.

Issues accessing my locally hosted website from within my LAN; gives NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:48 PM PDT

So like the title says I have a website hosted in a raspberry Pi that has a certificate and uses SSL. I can access the website when im not on the LAN (eg mobile network, freinds can access it etc.) and also by using myLocalIP:443 (because it uses https) but when I try mydomain.com (from within the LAN) I get NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID and when I look at the certificate it's my routers certificate thats being used for some reason. Any idea on why this is happening and any way to get around this so that I may access the website on my LAN? I have searched endlessly however I can't seem to find anything, or maybe I'm searching the wrong phrases? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Normal download speed, 0 to .19 upload speed.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:33 PM PDT

Posting to get some insight, so please delete if not allowed.

This has to be something within my PC.

When running a speed test, my download speed is around where it normally is, (anywhere from 470-690 Mbps) but my upload speed is anywhere from 0 Mbps to .18 Mbps.

My work PC, connected directly to same router, has no issues.

When running a speed test in Safe Mode, everything is normal. Upload speed peaks around 50 Mbps.

I had this same issue the other day, and it fixed itself randomly, but now it's being stubborn and won't budge.

I've reinstalled drivers, power cycled, changed ethernet cables, went back to an earlier system restore point, scanned for viruses, etc.

Is there anything that could be causing this? Can upload screenshots as needed.

Connect NAS to 5G Home Internet?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:26 PM PDT

It doesn't appear that I can assign an ip and that I'll need another device between the gateway and NAS. I am not this well versed in networking... suggestions?

Clarification: the NAS is connected to the gateway via ethernet. I can't figure out how to reach the nas from any other device by wifi.

Can anyone help me port forward my router for minecraft?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:19 PM PDT

    Hi

I should probably begin by saying I'm pretty much a noob at networking, I know some basics but not that much more.

I've been trying to port forward my router for the past few days now and I can't seem to get it to work. I have a ZTE F660 issued by my ISP and its configuration already has a tab for port forwarding.

The link below is a pdf I found on the internet form my ISP detailing how to do port forwarding:

Best IPAM / DNS / DHCP solution

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:18 PM PDT

As I am running into the limitations of my TP-Link Archer AX6000 router, I am looking for alternative options for IPAM / DHCP / DNS services.

In my home network I am running two Synology NAS'es (main file server and backup file server) and two HP Microservers for virtualization (Proxmox).

Can you recommend any free software for these applications?

As my NAS is running 25/7 anyway, I guess running it in LXC/Docker would make sense.
My Microservers aren't running all the time, but for a perfect solution I might reconsider that.
As there is also a lot software available for Raspbian Pi, I also have a spare model 3B+ lying around which I could use.
As I have no knowledge on re-flashing router software (OpenWRT, DD-WRT etc.), I don't know where it would show up in my list.

So my options are, in order of preference:-
    1. Synology NAS: in DSM or LXC / Docker
    2. Raspberry Pi 3B+
    3. VM in Proxmox on HP Microserver
    ?. Re-flashing my AX6000 router

    Thanks for your guidance.

Port Forwarding Stopped Working After WIFI Upgrade

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:59 PM PDT

I have been port forwarding a minecraft server that a lot of my friends play on for a few years. I have never had any issues with it, until a few days ago when I upgraded from 100mbps to 400mbps on Spectrum. Now I am the only person that can join the server. Could it be a problem with the new modem I got, or the internet plan, or something else? Any help is appreciated!

DSL line attenuation-Would rewiring and/or a POTS splitter help?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:44 PM PDT

I'm helping a parent out with their internet connection, which sadly is a DSL line due to limited options where they live (USA, but small town, middle of nowhere). The previous owner was also not the best handyman, but still wanted to do it himself so there are a number of idiosyncrasies with how things were done here.

Often the internet connection will be super slow, maybe dial-up speed if we're lucky, or even just drop out completely. The copper running into the house is very old, some of the rubber insulation is cracking and falling off, and it connects to some very old school junction terminal thing. (Essentially a couple of bolts and some washers between wires.) The wires have random splices in them to join some additional phone jacks with some really old wire (just twist the copper together, wrap some electrical tape around it and call it a day), and some more splicing for a (now unused) security alarm.

As a first step, I figured that I needed to get the wiring to the modem to be clean. From the telcom box outside, I ran a new wire into the house and rewired the phone jack for the modem directly to the new run. Admittedly, there are still two other sets of wires running from the telcom box for the same phone line. The jacks that have phones plugged into them have DSL filters on them. A couple of jacks in the house have nothing plugged into them and are unused. The jack for the modem is unfiltered. After running the new wire, the downstream noise margin improved slightly, but I didn't see any other real improvement. These are the readings from her Netgear D6400:

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3360 kbps 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 30.0 db
Noise margin 13.3 db 10.0 db

An additional item to note, is the ping times are around 135 ms, 0% packet loss at best. AOL (she insists on keeping that email address...) pings at about 500 ms with 5% packet loss. I have never seen the actual download speeds be even half of what the Netgear is reporting.

What is the best plan of attack here? Or do we just have to live with it? These are the things that I'm thinking of:

    1. Completely disconnecting the unused jacks and the super old wire that they are using.
    2. Perhaps replacing all of the spliced wire with dedicated runs would be better?
    3. Replace the wire from the telecom box and replace the weird junction thing. (Any suggestions on a punch down box or something that three jacks could be run from?)
    4. A filter on the DSL jack to filter out the phone. Relatedly, would a POTS splitter outside be a better solution to this? I could have one set of wires for data running directly to the DSL jack, and then the other two sets of wires could run for phone lines.
    5. Contacting Verizon and seeing if there's anything that they can do.

If I do all of these things, how likely is it that I'll get a more stable, reliable, and faster connection?

    Looking to upgrade wifi network.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Dear Reddit. I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but I'm making an attempt to find a better wifi router. Currently I am running on the Meshforce wifi setup. However, the relays are horrible and lose connection to the modem all the time.

My home is a single floor. It's not a big place, but these things can't hold a connection at all. Over the past few months the wifi has had complete dropouts countless times. When I do have a connection, it has anywhere between 5-60% packet loss depending on what everyone is doing. On average, we have about 3-5 people using the internet throughout the day.

    Suggestions are ideal.

-Edit: I'm browsing through Amazon, not entirely impressed with all that I'm looking at.. Any assistance would be appreciated.

-Edit2: I've discovered the firmware called "FreshTomato". It's got all I want to be in the router. Just now have to figure out what's best for that.

What are the risks of leaving my security camera DVR on same network as other devices even if internet access is disabled to that device?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT

What I'm trying to understand are the risks involved with leaving my security camera DVR (not IP cameras, but analog era cameras connected to a DVR) on my network without any separate VLANs. I have the DVR tied to a static address on my router and firewall rules enabled on my DD-WRT router that blocks the device from seeing the internet. I've tested the firewall rules and they do work in preventing whatever device with specified static IP from having internet access.
