Don't want to rent router but don't know enough to confidently buy my own modem/router Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:23 PM PDT Setting up under my name since roommates are leaving. Found out that our old modem/router/cables couldn't even support the speed we were paying for so bought new cables (thanks to this sub) but still don't know if I'm making the right choice for modem and router. I don't want to rent but still don't completely understand everything but I think I narrowed it down to 3 good choices. they should be compatible with my isp (cox, gigablast) but reviews aren't really helpful when all they say is "fast internet, 5 star" and I've tried looking through this sub but every recommendation is followed by someone else shitting on that recommendation. Really need help so I don't waste my money. [link] [comments] |
Wirelessly mirror computer audio/video to TV in separate room? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:22 PM PDT Hi friends, I was wondering if anyone has had success designing a mechanism to mirror a computer's audio/video feed to a separate TV? The problem I'm trying to solve is that I want to mirror YouTube TV on two screens, without Google servers realizing it, because I share my subscription with other people and we hit the limit. I don't want to run a cable as it won't route well. I do have spare raspberry pi computers I could use. Ideally the audio/video would be in sync between the regular computer setup and the remote TV because the audio will be able to be heard by both outputs at once. It would sound weird if they're too far off. Is there any way to do this for < $100 and without needless security risks? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:41 PM PDT Just wondering has anyone ever purchased a used UPS unit through eBay? I see that people are selling them without batteries and I figure I can purchase compatible battery for a better price than a new APC unit. Has anyone had a good or bad experience doing this? MOCA and everything I need to know? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:14 PM PDT I have the basic idea down but I have no idea how many of each things I need to buy besides the 2 moca adapters. I'm going with the Motorola 2.5 adapters, 2 of them, but that's not really an issue here. All I'm wondering is whether or not I absolutely need a POE filter where my coax enters my house (I know I definitely need one between the adapter and my router) and the manner/way each cable connects from thing to thing. Help needed and appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Kindly need your Networking Suggestions please....3 levels Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:50 PM PDT Good evening all, hope y'all are having a good weekend so far? Background-----House that I just moved into renting. Previously, I only saw ethernet port in 1 of the bedrooms on the 2nd floor, with coax in every other room including the living room on the main floor adjacent to the kitchen. Everything terminates in the basement at the electrical panel, this is also where the ISP fiber comes into the house. Today's visit...after thorough investigation and ISP technician visit to install Fiber, we noticed the following:
So, based on this new revelation, how would you advice I go about achieving the following please: What I am looking for in terms of connectivity:
Stuff I have so far:
See pics in link below for current placement of ethernet ports: Pic 1 - ethernet on backsplash pic 2 - I need at least 2 x ethernet drops on the wall left of the kitchen faucet pic 3 - Master bedroom, the ethernet drop is to the left of the window wall.......but I need the drop at the wall on the right (the nook) pics 4 & 5 - 2nd floor office. If this was your space, and taking into consideration the door opens inwards, where would you place your desk???? (note the ethernet drop is on the left wall looking at the pics. However, both walls have power outlets) i.e. would you have you back to the door, OR do you prefer to see someone coming [link] [comments] |
Another Zyxel vulnerability (firewalls this time) Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:04 AM PDT Hidden hardcoded accounts accessible via SSL VPN. Looks like another (honest) screwup similar to the one earlier this year that hit some of their other kit (AP controllers, routers) after a firmware update. It's looking like Zyxel really isn't a great choice for anything that is public-facing. [link] [comments] |
Can I mix and match Cat 6 and Cat 5e cables in my setup? I expect only Cat 5e speeds. Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:41 PM PDT I have a cat 5e wall jack in my bedroom. I have one long cat 6 cable and bought a switch so that I can hardwire more devices in the bedroom. Is it okay to have a cat 6 cable connect from the cat 5e wall jack to the switch, and have cat5e cables from the switch go to my other devices? I expect my speeds to be capped by cat 5e standards due to my wall jack but just want to be sure I can mix and match the cat 6/cat 5e cables as such. Or should I never mix like this and I should instead buy a long cat 5e cable to replace the cat 6 cable? [link] [comments] |
What's the best modem for a ubiquiti system with 500mbps from Frontier? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:39 PM PDT I accidentally bought a modem that is coaxial only and my isp uses fiberoptic so it's not compatible. [link] [comments] |
spectrum port forwarding (Please HELP!) Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:39 PM PDT I wanted to make a Minecraft server for my friends and not rent one from a 3rd party site, so I followed tutorials and made one, it works if I try to access it from my computer but not from other computers because I need to port forward, I don't even know what that means, please help me do it. I have spectrum internet and know have to access my router by searching my ip address which is 192.168.1.1, BUT when I do search it, it shows me a page with my basic router info like: Your Spectrum Router InfoDownload the My Spectrum app to manage your WiFi Network settings, such as:
📷To download My Spectrum, use your smartphone camera to scan this symbol.Internet StatusConnectedCloud StatusConnected I want to access my admin page and port forward for my minecraft server, please help if you know anything abut this, it would be very helpful. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:21 PM PDT I've been having some issues with my internet speeds being severely unstable. Most of the time I get ok speed, but sometimes it just flat out drops internet completely even with a great WiFi connection. However, no matter what the connection to the router is always perfectly fine running at 325+Mbps. The internet on speed tests only gets to a max of about 25Mbps even though its gigabit internet. My phone as well as my laptop in the same room run at about 100Mbps+. I am currently using a TP-Link Archer T4E in which I have uninstalled in device manager, updated the driver, as well as moved the whole desktop. None of which seemed to work. I would hate to buy a new wireless adaptor just for it to do the exact same thing, so if there is a fix that'd be amazing. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Tear apart my current networking plan Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:19 PM PDT My SO is moving to a new house. It's 2 stories and ~1700 sq ft. with something like 1000sq ft on the bottom floor. SOME of the ceiling spots are open. The walls are not open. The ISP coax appears to (not confirmed) come in through the garage on the ground level. I have currently mounted 4 IP cameras on the exterior of the garage and have tentatively located the ethernet in one collection spot (will likely add a PoE switch). I have run ethernet on the second story through the attic to a central location for an AP and to what will likely be my room. It all collects in one spot where I'll toss a UPS, NAS and a switch along with possibly a modem/router. I have drilled one hole from the 2nd story (near collection site) to the garage for a single line. It might be possible to fit 2-3 cables through, though one might need to be on the smaller side. Current thought is to either extend the coax in the garage from the ISP up to the collection site and run an ethernet cable down for {PoE switch, cameras and a possible downstairs wAP with the modem+router upstairs}, OR to run two ethernet cables with the modem+router+switch down in the garage. Have AT&T Fiber, want Google Nest routers. Best way to set-up? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:22 PM PDT The AT&T guys were telling me that the best option is just to plug the Nest into the back of their provided router/modem combo. However I feel like having a router plugged into a router is going to be a nightmare for forwarding ports and such. I'm also having sporadic PS3 DNS issues. Is there a better way to do this? Advice on Router for 3 Person Apartment Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT It's for my roommates' and mine's 4 room apartment. I believe we have about a 80~100 mb internet plan. What I believe happens with our ISP is that they already have a modem installed and we can use whatever router we want to connect to it using Ethernet [link] [comments] |
Reach modem-connected devices from router-connected devices, and vice-versa Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:15 PM PDT Hi, all, Apologies for what seems, even to me, to be a basic question, but I apparently can't find the right combination of Google or reddit search terms to figure out how to do this. My network is pretty simple, if annoying:
Because the "connection area" is stuffed away in a closet that murders my router's WiFi signal, I have to have the modem near it, so that it can connect to all the other rooms. I then have the router in the central living room, connected to the modem through a wall jack. The modem is connected to two PCs, a TV, my file server, and a couple game consoles (network switch) - basically anything that benefits from Ethernet. The router handles all wireless duties and isn't wired to anything, apart from the modem. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to get the wireless (router) and wired (modem) devices to talk to each other. Intuitively, since the router is connected to the modem, it seems that I should at least be able to see it and the wireless devices from the wired ones, if not the other way around, but I can't. And I need for both to be able to access each other to have things like my Plex server actually be useful. Is there something obvious I'm missing, or do I just need to suck it up and buy a more powerful router that can transmit across the whole apartment from that closet? Honestly, I'm kind of shocked that my current one can't; it's not a small apartment, but it's hardly a huge one, either. [link] [comments] |
Tp link omada switch is electrifying my rack. Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:14 PM PDT Tp link switch is TL-SG2428P poe+. At the time of installing the switch it was the only thing in or touching my rack. I plugged it in to test that it would power up. While touching my rack with one hand I touched another piece of metal and was shocked pretty hard. I killed the power to the outlet disconnected it and removed it from the rack. The equipment looks fine there is no fraying in the power cord. I have processed a return as I dont want shocked again and dont want to fry all my equipment. I have bought an omada controller and two omada APs. Should I just return all omada products? I dont plan on doing much if any network managing for awhile, but I would like two access points for my home. [link] [comments] |
Are there any side-by-side benchmarks of the TP-Link Omada APs? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:13 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out which Omada APs I should get but I can't seem to find any comparison reviews of the different options. I've only found a variety of reviewers that look at one product and give a solid review but it's almost impossible to compare them. Max client capabilities isn't an issue (this is for home use with <50 devices on the whole network), with my main concern being throughput and range. So far I've purchased the EAP 235-Wall and EAP245 with the 245 seeming to perform a solid amount better. The EAP265 and EAP620 are the same price so I don't see myself going for the 265 but is there a noticeable difference between the 245 vs 620? (Same question goes for the EAP660). I don't want to purchase all 660s but there is at least 1 location where I need all the range I can get. If anyone has any experience with these models and their differences I'd love to hear your thoughts! [link] [comments] |
Why does the local network get messed up when the internet goes out? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:54 AM PDT Why is it when my internet goes out I can't cast local files to Chromecast, smart tv, Roku, etc? Also, I have a tp-link Omada setup for wifi and I can't connect to the oc200 controller or the access points management windows even when trying by ip. [link] [comments] |
Do mesh wifi systems cut speeds in half like wifi extenders do? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:21 PM PDT I know that when going through a wifi extender the speed is cut in half, does this apply to wifi mesh extenders as well? [link] [comments] |
Depending on how my cables are setup, I either get 100 mbps or 1gb speed Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:44 PM PDT So I just got the 1gb internet package from at&t. I made my own cat6 cables and the installation guy gave me an ethernet cord for each room. I live in an apartment and it is at&t ready, wired throughout. Now here's what I don't understand, if I connect the cable the provider gave me, from the wall to the computer, I get 1gb speed. If I connect my cable from the wall to the computer, it says the cable is disconnected. If I connect my cable from the wall to a switch and then their cable from the switch to the computer, I get 100 mbps speeds and if I connect their cable from the wall to the switch and then my cable from the switch to the computer, I get 1gb speed. The reason I am asking is because 1, im curious. 2, I have my setup on the opposite wall that the ethernet jack is on and I was trying to hardwire my connections. One cord along the baseboard to the switch attached to the desk and cables going to there designated places as needed. The provided cable is not long enough to do that, thats why I made my own. Can anyone explain this to me? I have set the speed and duplex to 1gb full and disabled wifi on the computer(win10). I have never heard of a cable not being able to connect directly but getting the fastest speeds possible if another is connected first. Any info would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
High speed mesh network and NAS/ home server Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:33 PM PDT Hey everyone — this might be a really basic question but I want to get confirmation and/or suggestions from more knowledgeable folks before I pull the trigger. I've set up home networks before, but it's been a while and was always basic all-in-one gateways. I'm looking to do something more sophisticated now. I can get 1200 Mbps Xfinity, and I'm looking at using the Netgear Nighthawk CM2000 to take advantage of it. That part is easy (if you recommend an alternative I am very open to suggestions). I have a split level house with four floors including the basement, and two garages (one of which I am turning into a home office), so I am looking at a mesh network to get good coverage. I am planning to wire backhaul with good cable, but won't be able to get around to it for a while so I'm looking into tri-band systems that will perform better wirelessly in the interim — specifically the Deco X90 looks good to me right now. The part I keep getting confused by is how to manage wired client connections with wired backhaul. For example, how would I set up a high speed NAS for work into a mesh router? Would it work as expected? I ran into a few explanations saying that once hardwired the Deco will act as an AP only; is that a problem for my intended use case? If I were to transition from NAS to server at some point will it work for that as well? Any other considerations I should keep in mind going to mesh? Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Unauthenticated guest error when trying to map network drive Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:33 PM PDT Hey guys, having a frustrating issue trying to set up a network drive. Basically I have a portable USB hard drive plugged into my Nighthawk X6 R7900 router (latest firmware) set to share via SMP. I was able to map the drive no issues through the readyshare address in both of my laptops buy in my desktop I get the error: "The mapped network drive could not be created because... your organizations security policy block unauthenticated guest access" Any ideas? Two laptops are connected to wifi and desktop is ethernet if that makes any difference. And this is my own home network. All the answers I'm finding online are about shared folders not network drive plugged directly into router. [link] [comments] |
