    Simple Questions - May 03, 2021

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Does a cat touching a motherboard brick it?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:45 PM PDT

I was thinking of getting an open air case, but I have one large (furry) issue. My cat loves licking and touching my pc. Would him licking and rubbing on a motherboard brick it? Thanks in advance!

Edit: I'm getting the open air case and putting my cat in my closed case.

Looking into getting a big WD HDD, but afraid of noise

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT

I'm considering buying a WD Black 3.5 6TB SATA 3, mostly to store videogames. Does anyone having the drive experience serious noise problems?

Also, are there other cheaper viable drive options? Seagate Barracuda seems to have similar speeds, could that work?

GPU doesn’t rise above ~61 celsius even under the heaviest load

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:20 PM PDT

Been benchmarking my RX 480 with an MSI air cooler and was surprised it didn't rise past this point ever. Is it limiting my potential performance? Or should I just be happy with the lower termparature.

The little guy has worked hard, now he's almost finished the build!

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:21 PM PDT

The little guy hard at work, and pics of the almost finished build!

So I've actually been using it for about 2 months now; finally got round to putting in the HDDs today - which were swapped for a different product after the first HDD arrived looking like it had taken a few skids around the warehouse.

Putting in the HDDs took about 10 minutes, of course. The other 2 hours of this evening were building this little guy and his graphic card support tower!

    What did I learn?

    • It wasn't as terrifying as I thought; my wife ended up putting in the CPU cause I was paranoid about bending the pins. After watching her do this, I realised I had worried about nothing. You either have to be completely not paying attention or god knows what to put the pins at risk; it's not brain science or rocket surgery.
    • I got the thermal paste slightly wrong (had some leaking out of one side - with a small section of the opposite side not covered well) - seeing as it wasn't a catastrophe needing immediate correction, I probably would have been better booting up the computer and warming up the CPU plate before trying to remove the heatsink. At first I tried to pull straight up and panicked when I saw the motherboard trying to bend, and I wasn't really pulling all that hard either. I then succeeded with a twisty-slidey movement that didn't warp the mobo as I did it.
    • Really do check your heatsink / RAM heights. As you can see in the last image, I just managed to get the fan onto the heatsink on the last 'rung' - but it was a close call and probably isn't the most optimal for air flow through the heatsink.
    • It really is addictive Lego-for-adults; if I could afford it, I'd be building another one.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Hello, so I was finishing building the pc with the above parts and on startup I get 5 short beeps which for AMI bios should mean processor error. Pcpartpicker says everything is compatible but when checking on Pangoly my ram (AX4U300038G16-DRZ) doesn't show up (https://pangoly.com/en/review/gigabyte-h410m-s2h/compatibility/ram).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I first re-plugged in the 8 pin CPU power and 24 pin connection from the psu and everything looked fine. I then checked checked the cpu pins, they were fine, and I reseated the cpu. I took out the GPU just to make sure too. I tried every configuration of my ram (Mobo has 2 slots, I have 2 sticks). The only thing that did anything was taking out all the ram which changed my beep code from 5 short beeps to continuous long beeps. That made me suspect the ram being incompatible and I then looked at the pangoly link above which also suggests the ram may not be compatible but I am not sure since pcpartpicker has it as compatible ram. On pangoly 2666MHz seems to be the highest frequency compatible for ADATA/XPG and I have 3000MHz. Before I order new ram (I was thinking CMK16GX4M2A2666C16R), I just wanted to see if there were other troubleshooting steps I should have tried or if someone can confirm that it looks like the ram is the issue. Thanks!

This is the post that I am talking about. The grammar for it is pretty bad, and it claims to have "gforce 1080". However, coincidently, I have the exact same pc and it has a RX 580. It claims to come with a monitor as well.

Should I pick this up? 500 for a GTX 1080 alone is pretty good, if there is one...

Do high refresh rate 24" 1440p monitors exist anymore?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:41 AM PDT

As the title says - my desk would be more able to accommodate this size (looking to do triple) than 27". It seems there used to be models of this spec available up until a year ago from major manufacturers, but I cannot for the life of me find one that exists anymore.

Am I SOL in finding this spec?

Hard drive randomly became very slow

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:51 PM PDT

    Slow hard drive

Hi, For months my hard drive had been operating smoothly, giving me no issues at all. As of recently, it has slowed down abruptly, taking extremely long to boot into windows, and scoring around 21% on userbenchmark. I checked for malware, as well as other hard drive problems using software, and they all say that there are no issues. Could it be an issue with other components of my pc? My gpu has also been scoring lower on userbenchmark, so I'm wondering if it could be a mobo/power supply issue?

    Specs:

    Cpu: ryzen 7 1700

    Gpu: rx 5600xt

    Ram: 2x8 3200

    Mobo: gigabyte b450 ds3h

Hard drive: western digital 1tb hdd

I was playing DOOM Eternal, when my monitor suddenly shut off. My GPU light is still on, and my keyboard is still has its lights on. Is this a PSU issue or? I've tried unplugging it, turning the PSU on and off, and it doesn't help. Any tips appreciated!!

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Casual gaming, I'll be playing GTA V with graphical mods mostly. Streaming as well.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1920x1080p +60fps on most games on high settings (not aiming for ultra).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around 1400 max

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I would love to buy another monitor but am unsure of whether to buy a cheaper one that serves as a secondary or not buy one at all for the moment and save for a better one later. This is an option I would use as a second monitor if I were to buy it with the current setup:

    Asus VA24EHE at €129.9

    https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B07ZTJXBJW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=ABQJGLE2G5CGH&psc=1

I am basically just looking for the GPU and because of the current situation I didn't put a price in the listing for it. I am considering buying an used GPU too.

I also found a completely built pc someone is selling in my state and I'm currently debating on whether to keep looking for a GPU or buying this other 3 month used PC which has the same GPU. Here are the specs for the other PC:

    Mainboard: ASUS TUF B450M-PRO GAMING

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

    Memory: RAM DDR4 16GB / 2666 (Crucial) CL19

GPU: NVidia 6GB GTX1660 Super PNY

    SSD: M.2 2280 SSD SATA 250GB HP S700

    HDD: 1 TB 3,5" SATAIII WesterDigital D10EZEX

Power Supply: ATX Corsair CV550 (80Plus)

    Case: TX C-907 Cobweb o.N.

    WLAN: PCIe 3000Mbit DMG-35 WiFi6+BT5.0 (Intel AX200)

Without monitor and keyboard it is being sold at 850 €

I don't particularly love the case on this other PC and I would prefer having just 1 SSD instead of the SSD + HDD combination this one ffers

I would love some feedback on all of this doubts I have. Thanks in advance

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

First PC build, thoughts on the motherboard choice?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:54 PM PDT

Hi! I'm ordering my first PC and am trying to pick out good specs! Here's what I chose: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZKT3Jf

The motherboard is probably the thing I know least about; what do you think of the motherboard I chose for this build?

Do you see any problems and are there any better alternatives that around the same price or cheaper? I would prefer it being stock wifi so I don't have to buy an external adaptor.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated! Thank you! :)

Remove RGB from UX100 CPU fan

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:25 PM PDT

I have an MSI Z270-A-Pro with a Thermaltake UX100 CPU fan. I want to turn off RGB.

The fan says it's compatible with MSI Mystic Lights but that's only if you connect the fan to the RGB header on the MoBo.

I can't find this header on the MoBo and think that it might be too old. Am I wrong?

If I could find the wire to cut the lights I would - I don't ever want them on, but I don't know if this is possible.

    Any help is appreciated

Disk drive fits in the back of a Lian Li PC-O11 Dyanmic

Kinda had to force it a bit, but a standard disk drive (7x6x2) fits in the back where the second PSU would go after removing the cage. It's a little janky, but cheaper than buying a new Bluray and DVD player!
