I know it is based off of using resistance to trick the laptop into under reading power draw, but how do you calculate the ohms/resistance on the resistor? And how do you find where to solder?

    Stickers!

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:11 PM PDT

Hey you guys, so I just bought a new laptop (HP Elitebook 840 g6) for college and i want to put some stickers on it, but I don't know whether or not to put it on the laptop itself or buy a clear case covering for it and place the stickers there. If anyone recommends the case covering better, please send any links that can potentially help me with my search if you have any, thanks!

Yes, if it's a good deal and In good quality.

No priority, girlfriend just said "lap sized" whatever that means, your guess is as good as mine.

Little importance. Would like if it doesn't get overly hot.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Looking for a laptop suggestion please!

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:07 PM PDT

Hello all! I am looking to replace my current 8 or 9 year old laptop, an ASUS QF550 or something of the sort. It has served me well, but it doesn't cut it anymore.

Currently, I'm an advanced civil/structural engineering student doing my degree. I am therefore looking for a laptop that can run all the softwares that I need very well (and any similar software I might need in the future). I would be using stuff like autocad, civil 3d, PTV Vissim, Staad Pro, Sap 2000, and more softwares of the sort. I also do some light gaming on the side, though I find myself doing it ever less, so meeting requirements to play the newest games on ultra and stuff like that is definitely not a priority (though being able to play stuff is appreciated).

Also, I'd like to take digital notes on occasion on my laptop. I thought a home setup of a 2 in 1 laptop with an external monitor might work well, due to being able to see classes and stuff on the monitor, while I write down on the tablet itself.

Oh, and a dedicated number pad on the right hand side would definitely be appreciated for spreasheets and stuff like that.

I've looked at a few options, such as an HP Spectre, Asus zenbooks, lenovo thinkpad X1 (i think?), and some inside the asus ROG line (such as zephyrus).

I'd like the laptop to run well for at least, say, five years, so I understand I might be looking at a more expensive configuration. Let's assume budget is anywhere from 0-2000 usd. Longevity and build quality are also important to me because of this precisely.

Thanks everyone! Let me know if I need to give you more info.

    ASUS Secondary Screen Touchpad

    Posted: 04 May 2021 08:20 AM PDT

Hey guys! I'm looking for a new laptop max budget $1000CAD. One I was looking at was the ASUS with the secondary screen on the touchpad. However this feature rubs me the wrong way at first. It seems like something that could potentially go wrong/be annoying, so I'm looking to hear from anyone who has used it. How is this laptop? What did you think of the touchpad?

little things to do to take care of your laptop?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:35 AM PDT

hello! I just got the new acer nitro 5 rtx 3060 i510300h.

I just wanted to ask what are practices that I should do to take care of my laptop for the long run?

For example, should I leave my battery plugged in all the time? Or should I remove the battery and use it while plugged in? If I charge it, should I leave it at 75% and stop charging? I was told that after turning off my laptop, I should not fold the screen and leave it up for 15 minutes, is this true and why is that so? If you all have any other tips and tricks to ensure my laptop's longevity and possibly increase performance I would really appreciate it :)

    Best Laptop for College Student

    Posted: 04 May 2021 09:44 AM PDT

I'm headed off to college this fall, and I should probably get a laptop before going. What are some of the best options? I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for, but I want something that I can easily use for schoolwork and occasional gaming.

I should also mention that I already have an iPad that I plan on bringing.

My laptop gets a higher cinebench score when on battery power

    Posted: 04 May 2021 09:02 AM PDT

I undervolted my laptop by 75mv using throttlestop. It has the different throttlestop profile for battery and ac but i left them to default except the undervolt on both cpu core and cache on both profiles.

Any reason this could be happening and to make it perform better on ac?

    Laptop Recommendations (Light Gaming)

    Posted: 04 May 2021 08:43 AM PDT

Alas, people of r/laptop I come to thee with a request:

What kind of laptop do you guys recommend for light gaming?

I want to get someone a laptop that will work well for what she wants to use it for. It'll be used mostly for light gaming like minecraft, stardew valley, etc. maybe siege or something if I can convince her to play. I'm not made of money so some budget friendly options would be appreciated. It'd also be nice if it's not a fire waiting to happen as I'm guessing she'll be using it on her bed a lot.

She can't get a desktop as she doesn't have the space, otherwise I would just build her a cheap desktop. Sadly laptops are out of my knowledge range so I hope some of you could offer some advice.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Such as switching applications, typing, searching on the search bar,... A noise likes 'eeeee...eee' or 'uuuu..uu' will appear in a very short time (freeze then normal). It is really annoying and makes me uneasy/ uncomfortable.

    Advice on laptop

    Posted: 04 May 2021 07:37 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop with lots of space as I have lots of photos and videos. I also want the laptop to have a smooth running streaming service where I can plug my HDMI into it and stream movies to my Tv. My budget is $1000 but I'd rather spend less. Please give feedback thank you.

Edit: I do not want a Apple product. I have a IMac and I hate it.
