Laptop for Work and Casual Gaming / PHP 40k

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:10 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

PHP40k, I can go up to PHP50k, but would be grateful for a PHP35k choice

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > Build Quality > Battery Life > Form Factor (minimalist design preferred, but not required)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Doesn't really matter, as long as it performs well

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"+

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Adobe Suite (photo/video/audio editing)

Genshin Impact, Valorant at low to mid graphics, don't really play high to ultra graphic games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't really play games that require high-end graphics, at most I'd play at mid quality, 30FPS is okay

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Built-in webcam, good speakers and mic

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Simple is best, I don't really plan on playing anything too demanding but I do multitask a lot. Anything that helps reduce the lag between applications and overheating is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

2 in 1 for Computer Engineering major?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 09:08 PM PDT

looking for a 2-in1 laptop; computer engineering student :)

    • Total budget (in local currency):
      $1400 USD max
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 highly preferred (I want to take class notes digitally and don't want to buy an accompanying tablet). otherwise, performance > build quality > battery life
    • How important are weight and thinness to you?
very. my campus can be hilly in some areas and is spread out so portability is a must
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" - 16"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm just looking for something that'll last me for most (if not all) of my undergrad and can run basic programs. I imagine I'll often be using computer labs anyways haha
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I love a good keyboard, lol, click-clack. also, I know I ranked battery life third earlier, but it's actually pretty darn important to me
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have been looking into the dell xps 2-in-1... thoughts?

    thank you in advance!

I can't find a nice developers laptop and the trends make no sense to me.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 11:06 PM PDT

I'm a webdeveloper and work on large frontend and backend applications. My main machine is a tower pc (i7-4770k, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, ...) which is quite old (like 7 years) but still rocks and blows away every laptop I had.

When I'm at the clients place or traveling I need a development-machine with me. Right now I have a Dell XPS 13 9360 and I've grown to hate it actually. Back then the XPS13 was the holy grail and since all my mates had one I got one to when it was time for a replacement.

When googling for "best development laptop" or anything similar, all I get are lists of ultrabooks. I just don't get it. When did the ultrabook become the ultimate developers laptop? Sure it's light and small but I'd much rather have near-desktop performance and a bigger device. There's a huge difference between my tower and XPS 13 when it comes to compile times and the XPS 13 even feels a bit laggy with normal usage like office365 in the browser and so on.

In the last years lost track of all the CPUs and whatsoever. I just want a laptop that could possibly replace my tower pc and is still somewhat portable. Like max. 2kg and max 15 inch display.

I have no Idea what to get myself with all the "new Intel", AMDs and M1 machines. Can you help a frustrated developer?

Edit: There's no "budget". I run a company and a machine that let's me get my job done in a better way is more valuable than saving a couple hundred bucks.

    2-in-1 Laptop for Girlfriend

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:26 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500 at MAX, preferably less

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Preferably not, but am open to it.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Under 3 pounds is ideal. Thinness is wanted but prioritize build quality over thinness.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"-16".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Video editing: Premiere Pro, Blender

Animating: Very minor grease pencil animating on Blender, maybe Pencil2D, but all traditional (NOT NEEDED BUT HIGHLY PREFERRED)

Gaming: Genshin Impact as the most intensive gaming (though wanna play pixel graphic games as well if that makes a difference

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Genshin Impact. 60+ FPS ideal.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would love if it had a pen and drawable on the screen. Want to be using this laptop for drawing, minor animating, video editing, and/or screenwriting outside of a coffee shop when I have internet issues at home or just need a breath of fresh air.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have been looking into 2-in-1 laptops lately, but don't know if they are the best options for my needs. The one's that I like best out of what I looked into are the Samsung Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Pro 360. Microsoft Surface and ASUS Zenbook Flip have also been on my radar.

As per the title, wondering if anyone knows of HP has a prosumer laptop but with RTX graphics card. It has to be a professional laptop for work reasons, though I'd enjoy the RTX for more personal focused endeavors.

Surface Laptop 4 13" vs MacBook Air 13" (Battery life?)

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:04 PM PDT

So I'm trying to decide between these two and I'm leaning heavily towards the MacBook for obvious reasons, (slightly cheaper, heard that its more reliable), but I was just wondering how the Surface battery compares since Microsoft is claiming up to 19 hours with the Ryzen 5 model. Have also heard the MacBook battery with the M1 chip is great too.

Just wanting to hear about others experiences with these, thanks.

P.S - Lifelong Windows user, not too fussed with the learning curve if switching to macOS.

Yoga s730 vs Huawei Matebook X Pro

    Posted: 02 May 2021 03:46 AM PDT

    Hello,

I know these two are in vastly different prices but I'm just wondering if I should spend that much more for a laptop. What is appealing to me in Yoga (non convertible, outside Europe its ideapad 730s) is the size. I don't really need portable laptop but since I'm buying a laptop not desktop PC i still consider size and weight to be important.

Yoga being this thin and light makes matebook look big even if matebook is still quite lightweight and thin laptop on its own.

Performance is about the same in both models I'm considering are i5s (10gen in yoga, 8th in matebook x pro or whatever is used in 2019 model) and 8 gigs of ram. Matebook has mx250 which make some gaming possible however it's low prio for me.

The only thing that is pushing me into matebook direction its the screen of very high resolution and 3:2 aspect ration. I'm just wondering if that's enough.

The aspect that I can't judge is the brightness. Reviews say that yoga has about 300 nits but still they call it bright which on some other reviews people call 300 nits dim I don't know how to interpret that. Matebook has over 400 so no question there.

    Yoga costs me 3600

    Matebook 5000,

Currency doesn't matter. I'm just showing what is the difference.

I'm just looking for your thoughts on the topic.

Laptop for university student, dedicated graphics card, 60k-70k INR

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:44 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    60k-70k INR

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    nope

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the most important for me, I'm hoping for 10th Gen i5 or better and a dedicated basic NVIDIA mx250 or better, battery life isn't extremely important but as a prospective student I'd prefer 7-8 hours at least

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important, but I am not looking for a gaming laptop

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I just need performance for basic university work, reports, multitasking, zoom and some casual gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, the older Arkham games, Fortnite, nothing too heavy

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really but I would prefer a hybrid 1 TB HDD + SSD configuration, but I'm willing to go for a 512 GB SSD too. Finger-print reader would be nice but not a necessity

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am starting university this year so I would prefer something that can comfortably work for me, I don't use chrome as it's too RAM heavy so my normal day-to-day tasks aren't that huge, mainly just watching youtube or Netflix. I'd like the headroom though as I want to get back into Fortnite, Minecraft again hence the dedicated graphics. 14 inches seems like the perfect spot for portability as it's definitely going to have to fit inside my backpack so I can carry it to school and back easily which unfortunately rules out most gaming laptops.

Looking for a laptop for university and light gaming - $2000NZD

    Posted: 01 May 2021 07:37 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Willing to spend $2000 NZD if it's really worth it.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes but there's not really much of a market in New Zealand for them

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I want something light enough to carry around and with a good enough battery to last a day. Also want a laptop to last a while, so good build quality is important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite important, but as long as it's relatively light it's fine.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14" ideally

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming, already have a PC but it would be nice to play some games portably

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly 2d indie games, maybe some older 3d games. Would want a consistent 60fps in the 2d games though.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would be doing a lot of typing so good keyboard is important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at the Zephyrus G14, which I can get for just under 2000 with a 1650ti.

The Zenbook UM425IA-AM037R is $1650, but doesn't have a dedicated gpu, but I don't know how important that would be for the level of gaming I'll be doing.

    Best laptop for 2K ?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:14 AM PDT

What's the best windows laptop for $2000? Does any windows laptop beat a Mac laptop with similar build for that quality? I got the XPS 15 2019 model (7590) and I think I want to return it.. I keep being told Mac is better but ughhh

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • I can spend ~2000 CAD, can go up or down depending on the specs.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Prefer new, but mostly just want a laptop that's reliable and worth the money

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I want decent performance (min 8GB RAM), decent battery life, I don't want 2in1.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • I'm not worried about the weight or thinness, ideally not too heavy as I might carry it to my university. But I don't mind if it's a bit heavy (like the XPS 15) if it's good quality.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -Ideally 15 inch.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • I might run a few older games: old witcher/Castlevania games, civ 6, maybe try an older doom (I tried 2016 on XPS and ran fine). I don't plan on spending tons of hours gaming. Maybe a few hours a week.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-idc too much about settings. I don't really play first person shooters much, I can play games on mid settings. 40 FPS seems fine to me shrug.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Reliable build would be good. Not touch screen. Just a decent overall experience.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I really like the look and feel of the XPS 15 but mine is making a weird rattling noise and I just don't want to deal with problems from a laptop I just spent a ton of money on. I'm considering exchanging for the newer XPS 15 (9500) but I'm not convinced it will be built better.

What I need is something with decent RAM, at least 8GB because I'm often running multiple programs and video. I don't want to worry about it lagging. I'm a university student and often run statistics programs while multi tasking (PDFs, tabs, videos, office, Teams calls, all running at the same time)

I want something with decent specs for watching shows (good sound and video quality) and not a crazy loud fan. My top priority is reliability.

    Thanks!

[UK £1200] Looking for a good laptop Suitable for gaming etc

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:05 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

£1200 (GBP), up to £1400 for an HP machine as I get a work discount with them.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Would prefer something new but would consider a good deal

How would you prioritise form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance 1st, Build Quality 2nd, Form Factor 3rd, Battery Life 4th

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not particularly, this will be a desktop replacement so won't be moving around much day-to-day.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Yes, mostly gaming (see below)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Current games on at least medium settings (30+ FPS): Horizon Zero Dawn, Mass Effect Andromeda, The Outer Worlds.

Would ideally be able to play future games (3-4 years down the line) on at least low settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Aesthetically I'm looking for more 'workstation' than Gamer(tm) machine' - no weird geometric shapes etc!

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is to replace a Toshiba Satellite that I've had for the last 6 years that somehow still works despite a few drops and regular use but is showing its age. As I do have a working laptop at the moment I'm very happy to wait a few months to buy if that means I can get a better price or better hardware, so if the advice is 'come back later' that's fine as well.

What I need and why: - RAM for playing multiple sound clips - CPU for playing multiple sound synthesisers - SSD for quick sounds access

    I picked Legion 5 with R7 4800H, 32GB DDR4, 2TB PCI SSD

Also what I read: - AMD is better in computing power then corresponding Intel - CPU boost only works good for single thread process (so for multiple tasks - 1,4 with 4,9 turbo is worse than 2,8 with 4,2 turbo). My music software - ableton live - runs on multi-core - 120mhz display on Legion 5 is rubbish (but I will be using the laptop mostly at home and with external display) - Legion 5 is loud (but I won't be putting any stress on GPU most of the time) - gaming laptop type of build, guarantes good cooling and stable performance

Could You advise if my "research" is OK and would You suggest an alternative in the same price range? I could add a few extra $$$ for something more compact, and portable with similar specs. But on the other hand this is the last priority.

Need a new laptop to run Linux for a SA/DBA/cloud admin

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Up to $3000 USD, mid-atlantic US.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Possiblity, but would prefer something with a warranty

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

"Thinkpad" like build quality and a real life 7+hr battery life are paramount. Performance and RAM amount >8GB are high factors too. More than two usb ports is also very useful. A 2-in-1 or Ultrabook I honestly don't believe could have the right specs (usually 14" screens and too thin for decent battery life).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Minimum importance but would prefer a less than 7lb and 3" added to my laptop bag.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" to 17", squinting at less than 15" all the time has begun to be too much for my eyes (27" 4k at home and several 23" 1080p at the office).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • needs to run Linux well (eg Ubuntu 21.04 or Fedora 34).

    • will commonly have 7-30 SSH sessions to different company and client servers

    • two or more phpstorm & pycharm projects open (usually have -XMX at 4G or 6G due to project size and more than one open).

    • 10-15 browser tabs in FF & Chrome for meetings, dev notes, wiki, and docs

    • ok enough webcam&mic for team and client meetings and works well with most platforms (zoom, teams, google meet, jitsi, go-to meeting, WebEx, join.me) but not opposed to using external cam&mic.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

At most something like factorio running at least 45 FPS on med settings so it's playable, but will probably be rarely played or would be remote played through stream on a desktop when on road.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard with 10key is a must. A physical ethernet port (amazing how hard this is on non-enterprise/business pro laptops) Touchscreen or fingerprint would be nice but not needed. 256GB drive and 16GB RAM is probably the smallest I could use since I'd need space for projects being worked on and the memory to have them open. Definitely need more than 2usb ports, for a mouse and storage or USB2Serial, and at least 1080p screen@15" or 2k screen@17".

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Desperately looking to be updating from a 2010 C2Duo MBP 13" I've upgraded to 8GB and replaced it's battery (still works but just running only a Google meet or zoom call causes loud fan spin and stuttering video).

I've looked at something like a thinkpad T15 gen 2/T15g/E15 or a dell xps 15 9500, but unsure about battery life and what doesn't have audio issues running under Linux. I also looked at Linux purposed systems like System76's darter pro laptop but it's currently unavailable. This will be my new personal/work system for probably 5+yrs, like the MBP I got used in 2014, so picking the right thing is important to me.

    Laptop for med student/causal gaming

    Posted: 02 May 2021 12:49 AM PDT

Hey I just graduated medschool (not in US) and am planning to get a new laptop as my inspiron 13 7000 series is getting pretty old. Will be ordering from the US so prices in dollars please.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Around 800 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Performance, build quality, form factor, battery life. All are imp though since im coming from a 2-in-1 and will likely be carrying it around.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Will carry it around so should be super bulky like a huge gaming laptop
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" or 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
League of legends and other light gaming (e.g GTA etc) if possible. Will be running SPSS, multiple chrome tabs and virtual desktops.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
would be great to be able to run LoL, Tomb raider, dying light etc at 60 fps+ ish
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch screen would be nice but not necessary, reliable build quality, metal very strongly preferred. I think I prefer an AMD processor for value and better battery.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current laptop is a 2-in-1 (with a really buggy touchscreen that I never used) and its plastic keeps chipping off. Really like my dads envy x360 since its metal, bright, and super slim. Willing to go a bit thicker and heavier though for better performance and battery. Can wait a bit for sales (no idea when these happen so please let me know if there are any soon) but dont want to delay too much.

    Research Student 2-in-1 USA 1600

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:07 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1600 USD, US, but thinking $800-1200 will get me enough

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, if less than $900 USD or have a reliable return policy

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1, I would like to read and take notes on a large screen and have no interest in maintaining a second device. I know that they don't make for incredible tablets.

    Lightweight

    Battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Important, will be carrying around campus. ~3lb?

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    13-14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. Statistical software like SAS 9.4 but could use computer lab to run large data sets. 8GB RAM probably sufficient.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    NA

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Fingerprint reader

Probably not possible, but cleanable? Working with biohazards

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This will be a big upgrade from an Asus Zenbook circa 2015

I don't have access to any student discounts through my university that I'm aware of.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1000-2500 CAD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    I guess

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Quietness, performance, and build quality are important, I'm somewhat rough on my electronics, battery life doesn't matter.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    It's not.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    17ish

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, don't need it to be quiet while gaming. Doing high quality streaming, need it to be quiet while streaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't play many new games, and I'm not super worried about the settings while gaming, but you know, it's nice

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A keyboard thats spill resistant (I'm a mess), wouldn't mind a good webcam but I'll use an extrenal. Multiple USB ports (like 5+ ideally) and output for a monitor. Oh and a largish harddrive would be ideal.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically it's for streaming. Build quality, harddrive, quietness are ideal, and not too weak, I don't want it to chug or struggle with 4k streaming.

    Help, I'm hopeless.

Fast, portable. Want to develop websites on the go with it

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Critical

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/a

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Youtube, web videos, visualstudio, and web development stuff

    Nope

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a plus as it's for web development but if it's better to get a wireless mouse and keyboard I'll probably go with that

Simple is best, I don't really plan on playing anything too demanding. Osb, listening to music, and developing websites on live stream is about it.
