    Not very important

ROG ASUS (Zephyrus) G15–which model should I get to last 4 years (gaming, streaming, school)

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:05 AM PDT

I am thinking of buying a laptop from the Zephyrus G15 series for gaming and streaming as well as school. I am hoping to get over 80 fps on most games, possibly even 120 on some games too. I also will be using it for some adobe photo/video editing softwares, and the usual google docs/slides/classroom. My budget is around 1000 to 1800 SGD (can be increased a bit if it's really worth it). Which model would go the best for the things I need:

    • Lasts 4 years (good build quality with minimal hardware/software issues)
    • Battery that lasts 5-6 hours at least performance using google docs/slides/classroom/email
    • Good overall build quality (i.e., hinges, screen/deck flex, i/o ports, etc...)
    • Works well for gaming
    • Works well for streaming
    • Can somewhat support photo/video editing softwares

I am currently interested in getting this model, is this a good choice, or no? Also, is this series even a good choice for me? If you have any other laptop that's not in this series, feel free to recommend it if you think it's better than what I'm thinking of getting.

    All comments appreciated!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop I'm used to using on the go is an old dell chromebook 3120. I want something like it, but it to not struggle with multiple tabs(so at least 4gb ram), have a useable trackpad, and be useable and a second monitor. Not apple, I want to be able to fix this thing. I don't mind 720p or heat. Fast boot times is highly valued

A small, skinny laptop for working from home [light load]

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:57 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Started a remote job, which can all be done via an internet browser. I'm currently working from my gaming rig, and despite having 3 monitors I am capable of doing everything on my main 1440p monitor (I currently split screen 2 browser windows, one sticky notes window, and old school runescape).

Met a friend yesterday and he has the Huawei Matebook and the size (both screen size and actual thickness) looked perfect, but his i7 variant costs around £1.4k IIRC. I saw the i5 variant for £800 on Amazon, which would be a doable at a MASSIVE stretch.

Ideally I'm looking for the following: ~£500-£700 Skinny laptop Not a TINY screen, but doesnt have to be massive 1440p/4K (likely 4k as 1440p laptops aren't common) No heat problems Decent battery life, but can be plugged in at any time so not an issue SSD/NVME

If possible: High(er) refresh rate than 60Hz Maybe finance options so I don't have to buy it outright if I go for a more expensive version

Thank you all for your time <3

~$800, US - Business, Multi-Tasking, Light Gaming Ultrabook Size?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:53 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideally less than $800, can go up to $900 if necessary

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form Factor (preferred Ultrabook size), Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Very important, portability is key

*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. * 13-14 inches, don't want anything bigger that will make the actual laptop size larger than 12"-13" long

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I like multi-tasking, so likely to have 30-ish browser tabs open. Maybe some heavy loads on Excel. Light gaming mostly involving emulators (Dolphin, Xbox 360 emulators).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Emulation: Aiming to emulate up to the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii generation

Fallout NV: High settings, or close to it

Fallout 4: At least a little better than the bare minimum settings

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

SSD, at least 16gb ram, lightweight and portable (less than 4 pounds).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I guess my benchmark is my work laptop, a Dell Latitude 7390 with 16gb ram and i7-8650U which weighs in at 2.6-ish pounds. I like the form factor and size, as well as the specs. That's a model from 2019, so ideally looking for a similar size with comparable, if not better specs (but feel free to tell me to just buy the same one lol). Been looking at the Ideapad S540 13 inch as a starting point.

As mentioned, I'm a heavy multi-tasker with about 30-ish browser tabs open on average. Screen quality not as important since I'd likely be attaching this to a monitor as a second screen. Don't need the latest and greatest specs since this will be my secondary pc, but ideally I want to future-proof the machine so I don't have to upgrade for at least 5 years-ish.

Dont plan on gaming a bunch but should I get a gaming laptop for better specs?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:33 AM PDT

Was looking at the macbook air, dell xps, and surface laptop 4 for around $1000. I liked that they were quiet machines and seem simple and rated well.

However looking at some gaming laptops I could get a laptop with more ram, bigger screen, a number pad on the keyboard for about the same price or a little more.

Razer Book 13 or Microsoft surface 4

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:48 AM PDT

Should I get the razor book 13 or the Microsoft surface laptop 4. Currently have a MacBook Air 2015 so I feel like either one would be an upgrade not the biggest fan of the keyboards on the new macbook airs that's why I'm not considering it. I like the port selection on the razor book 13 but I do like the ability to get a 15 inch with the surface. If I want 15 inch on the surface then the internals could be the same if I opted for the Intel i7.

    Laptop for My Dad (CAN)

    Hey all,

I'm sure this will be a super easy recommendation, but I mostly use mac so not sure about windows laptops. My dad is looking for a new laptop for work, as well as light gaming (mainly AOE2 DE and flight simulator-type games).

What would a good deal in Canada be? Reliability is key, as is a decent build quality. If you can get it at Costco even better.

    Looking for laptop under 400

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:46 PM PDT

HI! I'm looking for a laptop that I can play games on such as older vavle games (tf2, csgo, portal, portal 2, half life 1 and 2, and left 4 dead) and minecraft at around 30fps. I don't really care about screen size, battery life, or weight. I understand 400 dollars can't really get me very much but thats the most money I can afford. If you also have a suggestion for pcs that can do that go ahead and tell me.

    Grad student/TA 1000 budget

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:13 PM PDT

I currently have an Acer Swift but the speakers And webcam are terrible. Space and speed no issue as I just use it for virtual class, writing, and YouTube/Netflix. So, I would like my new laptop to have good memory, space, very good built in speakers, very good video quality, and a very good built in webcam. I am a big Microsoft Office user so I don't know how I feel about Mac. They're also pretty pricey, but the Air seems cool. My budget is around CAD 1000-1200. I love the idea of the Microsoft Surface laptop but I don't know if they're good (using the screen as a white board while I teach sounds great).

    Thanks so much!

Édit: one thing I should add... I would rather save a couple hundred if possible. But if I have to spend I will.

Édit 2: about the form, I am not a fan of clunky laptops. I also don't play games on my laptop, so no worries there. Normal size screen is fine. And I don't think I mind refurbished, but I'm terrible at finding that kind of thing.

    $2000, 32gb RAM, 15”, long battery life

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:17 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm in the market for a 15" laptop with long battery life and 32gb RAM. I have roughly $2k to spend. I would like at least a 512gb SSD, but ideally 1Tb. Pen-compatible touchscreen is a plus for signing documents, but not a must-have feature.

I'm reasonably tech-savvy and would be willing to replace the RAM or add a bigger battery myself if needed.

I've looked at the Lenovo Yoga series, which look great but limit at 16gb RAM. Dell XPS has all the technical specs but battery life is reportedly very poor. LG Gram seems to have good battery life and I could get a 32Gb RAM version, but I've heard bad reviews about LG machines so I'm hesitant to pull the trigger.

    Any ideas?

Looking for a laptop around $1400-1800 that is good enough to run most games at decent frames

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:17 PM PDT

Hey, I'm looking to get a laptop that is powerful enough to play games but also looks like a regular laptop I can bring to class, and is pretty quiet at low work loads, I'm not really into that *gamer laptop* aesthetic

I picked up an RoG Zephyrus 15 today and the system was making so many high pitch squealing sounds I've been given the option of returning it or losing my hearing, so I'm not fond of RoG products atm.

I'm currently looking at either a Razer Blade 15 Base 2021 or an MSI GS66 but I've seen plenty of negative reviews for both in terms of sound and temperature so I'm really unsure. Thanks in advance!

[Australia - ~$1600 AUD Budget] Laptop for work/light gaming

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:17 PM PDT

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Would prefer not to
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm thinking of using the laptop mostly for working/studying and a bit of light gaming, so portability and a good battery life would be my priorities. EDIT: I also heard that AMD based devices perform better than intel now, and would love some insight on that too!
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important, as long as it is not too bulky or heavy to carry around
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.14 - 15 inch screen if possible
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming - Valorant, Valheim
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Valorant, Valheim, preferably at least 60fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?A webcam and an audio port are essential, while touch-screen is a bonus
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I'm not really familiar with laptops and would greatly appreciate everyone's help and expertise with picking a laptop suitable for work and a little bit of gaming. Work mostly consists of drafting documents and having access to documents for long hours without charging (solicitor). My current laptop would just die in 1 hour if not plugged to the charger, so I was looking for an upgrade from that haha

Thanks a lot again to this wonderful community

I don't mind buying used if necessary, but I'm hoping to spend 700 USD or less. I am 100% clueless when it comes to computers as I've only ever played consoles. But I'm getting deployed and thought it was time to make the switch over to PC due to a laptops portability. I have seen MW's minimum requirements, but I've also heard that they were nowhere near accurate so I'm trying to get some help.

I understand that it's not possible to get anything high-end with my budget-or possibly not even anything at all- but I figured it was worth looking into. I don't care too much about the graphics, so long as it plus as it should. If there is any laptop that could do this at a reasonable price, please let me know. But again, I get that this probably isn't realistic.

I need a laptop thin with a decent battery life that allows me to use it at school but I also want to play sometimes. I was thinking of getting one of the new music prestige 15 but I'm not sure if the gpu is still worthy. suggest some alternatives please (Not native English speakers, don't hate my bad English)

US, $1100-$1500. Could go over if that's what it takes to get what I need. Looking for something really fast and reliable and plan to use it for recording music and occasional video editing outside casual use.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-$1100-$1500. If I can't get a powerful enough laptop for what I need I'd consider going over. Just not sure what my options are as I haven't purchased a computer in some time and don't really know what's out there.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Eh, not particularly. My budget is flexible so I'd rather not deal with the hassle of a used machine.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Performance primarily and strong enough graphics to dock to 2 high quality monitors. In terms of form-factor, 2-in-1 does seem appealing to me because I've been riding the mechanical keyboard train for a good while and can't stand typing on most laptop keyboards. When I go portable I like the idea of having one of my more portable MKs resting right up against the screen. I'm not after long battery since I'll be docked most of the time and don't want to sacrifice performance for battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very. I'd prefer it's not a behemoth but the majority of the time I expect I'll have it docked to my monitors. I won't be taking it out with me every day, but am purchasing a laptop so I have that option.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15" would be preferable but I'd be okay with 13" if it lowers the price enough to get the specs I need.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Hobbyist video/photo editing so not extensively, just when a project occurs to me. More important is audio editing for podcasting / home recording studio where I'll be connecting an audio interface for one mic and one instrument at a time. I'm just getting into this so I don't yet have a specific software picked out for recording.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I have a Steam library I haven't touched in a while that I'd like to revisit, but all my games are dated so not too resource heavy. The most demanding game I have in my library is probably The Witcher III which I'd like to be able to play with high quality graphics and FPS, but this would be a perk, not a must.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As I mention, computing power is what I'm after so I can smoothly and quickly run applications on multiple screens and also manage a lot of Chrome tabs simultaneously without performance issues. I'm accustomed to my work-issued Macbook Pro that has an i7 2300 GHZ processor with 16GB RAM. Definitely looking for a powerful quadcore processor (preferably Intel) and no less than 16GB RAM. SSD is a must though I'm not sure whether that's the standard on everything these days.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Debating over whether to fork out the money for a high-end Macbook Pro as this is what I've been using for work for several years and I think I prefer MacOS over Windows 10. However, if I could get more power for less money I could definitely be convinced to go PC because it would be fun to play some Age of Empires III and to have more freedom from the Apple ecosystem. I haven't used Windows 10 since around 2015 so I'd be curious to hear opinions from people that have tried both operating systems in more recent years and how slick the experience is in comparison.

    Thank you!!!
