Home Networking Is a Piehole worth it?

Home Networking Is a Piehole worth it?

    Is a Piehole worth it?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:51 AM PDT

I'm in the process of shifting my NAS, switch, router, and modem to a new NavePoint 9u. I'm trying to put the little bells and whistles in while I can and recently heard about pieholes. I have a Raspberry Pie 3 sitting around that this would be perfect for but was wondering if the juice was worth the squeeze.

    Will I see increased speeds?

Any security risks to my cloud NAS drives or network?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

How do I turn two Linux PCs into a single router?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Sorry for the weird way of expressing my question, maybe the following text will help you understand what I mean. I have a regular WiFi router (192.168.1.1/24) at home that is being used by myself and my guests as well.

There are some devices I don't want to have on this network, so I want to put these into a separated one (192.168.2.1/24) but still make use of my WiFi router's internet connection.

I could simply achieve that goal by plugging another off-the-shelf WiFi router into my current one. Unfortunately, I want this setup to be a bit more complicated.

Linux PC 1 is connected to the regular WiFi router via Ethernet and is supposed to play the WiFi AP (192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.127). Linux PC 2 is configured vice-versa: it has a ton of Ethernet NICs for peers and one WiFi NIC to connect with the regular WiFi router (192.168.2.128 - 192.168.2.254).

To put it in a nutshell, I want some kind of virtual router with WiFi and Ethernet functionality split into two separate devices. Wireless devices that are on Linux PC 1 are supposed to communicate with wired devices that are on Linux PC 2.

I've been thinking of utilizing a VPN like Wireguard or OpenVPN for this. Would it be possible for Linux PC 1 and 2 to "trick" their peers into a VPN or is the entire idea just overkill?

I don't expect someone to send me a complete guide for that (but it would be very cool, though). I'm sure there are specific terms for what I am trying to do, so even giving me plain terms could help me a lot when googling stuff!

Is there any way to lower my Ping?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:59 PM PDT

I am located in Oregon and I play Valorant on an OREGON server, the lowest ping I ever experience is like 33-37, I have seen people with like 7-11 on certain occasions. Recently I have had to play on Texas severs a lot of the time and I have to play on ~70 ping which is noticeably a significant difference and almost unplayable for competitive play. I cant help but think that this can be lowered.

I currently have a gigabit Xfinity plan and have been using the xFi modem/router all-in-one which runs on a 100ft cat5 cable upstairs to a gigabit switch which runs on a cat5 to my room into my PC.

Is there any obvious significant changes I can make to lower this? The only things I can think of would be to use cat6 cables and use a dedicated modem and a separate dedicated router but I am wondering if this would even be worth the money/effort?

    Understanding VLAN (Total newbie)

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:10 PM PDT

    Hi everybody,

I'm a total newbie so sorry for dumb questions. Let's say that my network is a classic:

ISP Modem (I don't know how to set as bridge) -> Router/Wifi (192.168.1.2) (Netgear R7800) -> NAT -> everything else happily together (10.0.0.X).

Let's say that I have a NAS that I'm afraid of keeping turned on because I'm keeping personal data on it that I only want to access via LAN.

I looked after VLAN, if I understood it correctly I could make:

ISP Modem -> Router/Wifi -> Managed Switch -> everything else

and so I could configure on the Switch two VLAN, "Internet" with every port except the NAS, "Internal" with every port except the Router.

In this case I could "isolate" the NAS from the outside. Is this correct and totally safe?

If it's so, what about when I want to update the software on it?

    Thanks

    VyOS vs DANOS

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:46 PM PDT

Looking to broaden my horizons a bit as I've had my head firmly in the pfSense sand for years. The recent drama hasn't caused me to jump ship, but I'm a belt and suspenders guy—should the need arise I want to know what the best option is.

Looking to have a go in the home(office)lab with VyOS and DANOS.1 Anyone have good or bad things to say about either of these?

I used Vyatta many years ago and I remember liking it, but pfSense won with its nice GUI since it was something I could teach a lot faster to the guys I worked with. Now fast forward a decade and I find my priorities have changed and I wouldn't mind doing more with automation, orchestration and pure commandline.

From what I've read, VyOS is somewhat "more mature", but unless you're a contributor you basically have to run the rolling release(?) which is 99% stable (so I guess ever 3 months you have to go hit the power button?) while DANOS has DPDK so theoretically higher PPS, which would most likely be wasted in a homelab environment which isn't going any higher than >1Gbps. I am tempted to try DANOS but looking at the state of the documentation, I can tell it's going to be a bit of a lonely journey.

Anyone got any thoughts on this topic?

Cat5e ethernet wiring color help for existing house

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:33 PM PDT

I have existing cat5e cables run through my house. All the outlets are hooked to a telephone module in my closet (https://imgur.com/a/41ofz10) that I am planning on crimping with a RJ45 connector.

The problem is I don't know if the outlet is using a T-568A or T-568B. Here is a picture of the RJ45 jack (https://imgur.com/a/geG5Hrh). The color is gg/bb/oo/bb. It's using the ICC EZ keystone jack (https://icc.com/product/cat5e-rj45-keystone-jack-ez-style/).

I'm unsure how I need to wire the cable in my closet (A or B) or if I need to crimp it as gg/bb/oo/bb as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: here is some product info on the jack (https://icc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/IC1078LXXX-IC1078E5XX-msr-0406-1-A-RevA-web.pdf) - it seems the connection is TIA-568A per the product page?

    10gb network switch recommendations

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:54 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Finally upgrading my home network to 10gb.

I am wondering what switch is recommended? I only have a few clients that will actually benefit from 10gb, majority of my clients are 1gbp. So I'd like a switch with a mix of ethernet ports and 10gb SFP+.

Currently only clients I have at 2.5 or 10 gb are my workstation, server, and modem.

I am also planning to upgrade my AP to 2.5gb once wifi 6 becomes more ubiquitous.

So I was looking at this:

    MikroTik CRS328-4C-20S-4S+RM

It has 4 ethernet ports, and 24 SFP+.

So not ideal, I'd still have to use a second switch for my 1gb but future wise it's got more expansion if I ever ad

Or would it be more beneficial to order maybe a smaller 4 port 10gb switch like this:

    MikroTik 5-Port Desktop Switch, 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port, 4 SFP+ 10Gbps Ports (CRS305-1G-4S+IN)

And then connect one port to my existing Ubiquiti switch (which would connect to all my slower 1gb clients).

And then the other 3 ports would be (1 to router, 1 to local server, 1 to my workstation).

Problem is when I ever get around to adding a wifi 6 AP, then I would need to upgrade since I'm already maxxed out on the SFP+ ports.

    I also saw this:

QNAP QSW-M2108-2S Layer 2 Web Managed Switch with Two 10GbE SFP+ Ports and Eight 2.5GbE Ports

    It only has 2 10gb ports but 8 x 2.5gb.

Would be enough for 10gb between my workstation and server, and would provide plenty of 2.5gb for my modem, APs etc.

However for only $100 more I'm actually getting a ton more future upgrading with the 24 ports on the microtik. So I'm leaning toward that.

    Any recommendations or advice?

    EDIT:

Doing some more research I found this Brocade. With 48 1gb ports, 8 10gb SFP+ ports, AND POE ?

For $300? This seems to good to be true?

    DHCP Refresher

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:11 AM PDT

background : I'm looking for a way to block porn on my sons ipad. For reasons, his apple ID is set as an adult, he is not, so i was thinking a layer 3 solution might be best ?

My home router (from the cable co, Virgin Media) is currently the DHCP server, but it only seems to lease IP address, rather than a full IP configurations (which IIRC proper DHCP can do)?.

So if I wanted to push alternative DNS or Proxy Settings to other devices on the LAN, am I right in thinking I can disable DHCP on the router, and stand up another DHCP server on another device - which would advertise and supply a more complete IP config to LAN clients ?

    thanks

    Cat5e speeds

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:21 PM PDT

Tl;dr: att told me cat5e can handle 10gbps. Is that true?

I had an ATT tech come out today to evaluate moving my ONT close to my network closet and network rack. Right now the ONT is on the other side of the house and I pass the signal through a cat5e wall jack to the network closet where my gateway is setup.

I wanted to simplify the setup by putting the ONT closer and also prep for the coming (next 2-3 years) 5G service from ATT or expansion of 2G Google fiber service to my area. The tech told me it was extremely difficult to move the fiber connection to the other side of the house and not worth it, since the existing Cat5e cabling wouldn't be losing any bandwidth and can actually support up to 10gbps.

    Is that true?

    Decent Home Wifi Router ~$200

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:52 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to purchase a wifi router, preferably wifi 6, for my 2000 sqft single story home. Plaster interior walls and brick/wood exterior walls. I have 100 mbps spectrum service, using their modem. I will have 3 phones connected, 2 laptops, 1 PC, 2 smart TVs and an Oculus Quest 2. A max combo of 3-5 of these devices will be in use at peak times. Only the PC needs to be wired, the rest on wifi. Im hoping to spend around $200, but I am willing to exceed that if necessary. Wireless 4k streaming is a must. Any suggestions? Will I need a mesh system, or just a single router? I have been looking at the Eero 6 and the Deco x20, but am open to all options. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    WRT3200ACM woes

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:39 PM PDT

I bought into the hype for the Linksys WRT3200ACM when it came out and waited for an update to make it good. That never happened, the return window closed, and here we are several miserable years later. I believe there's a hardware issue with this unit. I've tried DD-WRT and it isn't any better. Connections still drop. Functionality is still broken. Am I in the market for a new router? If so, recommendations?

Why is all my port open?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:26 PM PDT

Just recently (5 days ago), I got a new public IP address and I had my port forwarded to MC nothing else, Suddenly my friend couldn't join my MC server with a text saying "forcibly closed by remote host". I checked canyouseeme and they still can see me, however, when I tested if my ports are open to other ports, it says that they can see me? I checked my router from the website and went to the port mapping section, the only thing there was MC, I don't know what causes this and I need some help. All of the ports are open for some reason port 1-99999 (I tested all commons port and did a random numbers)

Share devices between segmented home network.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:13 PM PDT

So i have my home network segmented though my firewall. My main network and the guest network on their own unique ip range and network port. I have certain family members who will probably open an attachment if it was called (IAmAVirus) so i have them separated on the guest network. Its where i keep most of my IOT devices too. The huge issue i'm having is i need to share certain devices across the network segments. Printer for example. I really don't want to have to have a printer for each segment. All my switches are dumb switches. I could start trying to open limited ports between the different segments but i don't know this seems like its going to be a mess. I also could opt to buy a more advanced switch (managed). I could look into Vlans but i don't know that seems to be adding a lot of complexity. Vlans are something i've never messed with and then, i would assume, i would have to make sure every device supports vlans. Then you have the issue when something goes wrong trying to figure out what is broken and the more complex the setup the more troubleshooting you have to do. Is there a better way? Any recommendations?

How to activate coax cable wall outlet

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:40 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I've got a wired connection in one room and it's in my downstairs guest bedroom.

Cable company wont come out due to covid and what not and I have tried a few different things to improve signal upstairs since that's where my office is but none have seemed to work. So now I want to move my modem/router upstairs.

I have a coax wall plate and there seems to be a coax cable running from the wall plate upstairs but I have no idea where it ends.

My splitter is outside and I am not sure how to even begin wiring a coax from the splitter, through the hole in the siding and how to find the office which is upstairs.

Any good videos out there or any tips?

Edit: I think they may have cut the coax? here's what it looks like

    Find network cable in wall

When we moved into our new house, my mother-in-law, when painting our bedroom cut and plastered over an ethernet cable that was already existing ethernet cable...which I would like to get back... I can cut into the wall easily enough, I just can't remember where exactly it was...

The other end I already know is in the basement with a jack... Is it possible to use a probe kit to find the location of the cable in the wall?

Unmanaged switch messing up my network

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Hi folks, hoping to get some help on this: I bought a simple netgear 16 port switch and after plugging it into my router and then plugging my server, NAS, and a few other things it doesn't seem to deliver internet to any of those devices. Ive rebooted it(as well as the modem and router), tried different ports on the router(not WAN) and tested it with certain devices not plugged in. The worst part is if i mess with it too much it completely messes up my network to the point of changing the subnet?? Or perhaps it's assigned itself a random IP? Not sure, all i know is it breaks my entire network. Is the answer simply to RMA it? Please let me know if you have any advice.

Opening a port on my Arris BGW210-700

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:16 PM PDT

I have an Arris BGW210-700 (I have AT&T Fiber) and have had mixed results opening ports.

I have a Plex server, so I have the TCP and UDP port opened as separate line items (instead of using one TCP/UDP). I check it on ismyportopen.com and I get an open port result and the Plex server works fine if I want to watch it away from home.

I also want to open a port for my torrent application. I tried doing the exact same thing I did for my Plex server port, but I keep getting a closed port result from the website. I've tried making one entry as TCP/UDP, separate entries, changing the port, making it a port range. Nothing seems to work.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Is it my router's fault?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:10 PM PDT

Good day everyone, I would like your input on a problem I am facing.

For the TLDR, my internet ocasionally becomes slow after I modified my network topology, and I think it's caused by the router, would like your input.

Full story: I have a 20/5 mbits broadband connection that is served via CAT5E cable directly to my home router (authentication via PPPoE), my router is a LinkOne L1-RW332 (LinkOne just rebrands routers and the router is, hardware-wise, a Tenda N301 [1]), I use the N301 firmware because it is better optimised for that particular router and it used to work great, three months ago I changed my network topology to share the internet with my aunt who lives in the same lot (a house that shares a wall) and now the router ocasionally becomes slow, the Wifi sometimes stops working, sometimes it's just the latency that increases.

In my old network topology, the router would receive the broadband Ethernet cable and be connected to: 2012 Samsung SmartTV(router LAN port), RaspberryPI B+(router LAN port), 4 smartphones (wireless), 2-3PCS (either 2 notebooks, 1 notebook + 1 desktop, or 2 notebook + 1 desktop) and a wireless printer. We usually had 7-8 devices connected at a typical time. The cables were 2m long and the only real network hog was the TV playing Netflix, which only I watched.

The new network topology (to share internet with my aunt) adds a Wireless Repeater plugged in to the router LAN port, in AP mode, with DHCP turned off, it's a 30m CAT5E cable, the Repeater is on her house, which serves a smartphone and a smartTV, both wirelessly. The Wireless Repeater is one of those cheap Wall-type repeaters from China with just one ethernet port. She is a heavy netflix user (and I have limited her TV bandwith to HD because it was hogging the broadband) , our usage of Netflix and IPTV has increased a little as well.

I assumed just adding: A repeater (in AP mode), a smartphone and a smartTV would not be a problem for my router, but random slowdowns now happen every other day. I am really looking for fresh ideas (and probably smarter than mine xD) because I'm stumped. What would you say is the cause and how should I diagnose/fix it?

    Questions you might have:

1- The router is not compatible with DD-WRT and will never be, according to the developers. I'm not if it'll ever be supported by Tomate and OpenWRT, but I haven't found it in their database.

2- The only consistent nethog now is my aunt's netflix (she watches in the afternoons), because our internet TV time is something I'm well aware, and the problem happens even when we're not using streaming.

3- I hardly ever use torrents, and steam game downloads are few and far between (you only download a game once)

4- I'm a linux user and my notebook's network card driver support is... disappointing to say the least (Ralink drivers), but I know the driver behavior, it's not related to bad driver since I test right in front of the router.

5- If I restart the router, the number of connected devices decreases temporarily, and the performance is usually recovered (even though my aunt's TV reconnects and watches netflix). 1 every 6 times the restart doesn't fix the problem and it remains slow even though the number of devices is smaller, temporarily.

6- With my old network topology slowdowns would happen, but they only happened when 8-9 devices were connected, and even so, that would only happen once a week.

    cat6 burried in conduit failure

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:01 PM PDT

About 6 or so years ago I burried electrical grade 3/4 pvc conduit from my house to my garage that's about 80 feet away. In the conduit I pulled 2 cat6 and one rg6 coax for TV. I have a gigabit switch in my house and a gigabit switch in the garage. I tinker with computers and other electronics in the garage and a few years ago I built a small plex server and it too resides in the garage. It's been buffering pretty bad lately and today I was troubleshooting and in my house I have a little bit over 230mb download speed. Next door it's barely reaching 10mb if I'm lucky. In my troubleshooting I noticed that the switch in the house says it's only connecting at 100 mb on the port. I tried the other cat6 and the same thing. Tried different ports on each switch and same thing. I'm going to guess that the cables are failing.

Would it be better to get direct burial cat6 and pull it in the conduit? I really don't have anything to test the cable besides my polarity checker.

I'm thinking about running a temporary cable from the house to the garage just long enough to verify it's cable failure issues.

    Wiring house during building

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:59 PM PDT

So our house will be under construction in a few weeks and I am going to run the low voltage. I know roughly where/how many of each ethernet (1 for data, 1 for TV, 1 spare) I am planning to run. I am planning to order ethernet, and coax this week. Each run I have calculated includes a 130% overage.

    1. Current plan is to run cat6a, but I have been told by friends to run grounded cable and leave 1 end ungrounded. Is this the right way to do it? Longest run is under 100' (including 130% overage on length).

    2. I have seen posts online that running pvc for the sole plate to the bottom of the low voltage box would make future wire pulling easier. I am hoping to never pull a wire, but we all know how that goes. Does anyone have any advice for making future hate present me less?

How to set up network with new house wired for ethernet

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:44 PM PDT

Just bought a new house that's wired for Ethernet everywhere. The box with the coaxial and ethernet cords is in the basement, which is fine except that's not a good place to put the wifi router because on the second floor the wifi is very slow. I want to put the router on the main floor so I can get a decent signal everywhere in the house.

I think I need to get a switch for the basement in order to connect the modem, all the wired ethernet ports, and the NAS I intend to add to my network at some point. Is that correct? Do I need to look for a special kind of switch to keep my network secure and to allow it to share the internet connection with everything I plug in, including the wifi router if I put it on the main floor?

Best router or mesh setup for 200-300 CAD?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:57 PM PDT

I'm looking to order a router or two (mesh) between $200-$300 cad in the next few days because the isp provided router has been pretty bad and has deadspots with it's signal. All my most important devices support wifi6/ax. Internet is around half a gigabit speed. I don't care about throughput performance too much, my main priority is latency and coverage/signal strength throughout the house. My house isn't too big, I think it's between 2300 to 2800 sq ft? I'll update this post if I figure that out. I don't care if china sees the porn I watch so chinese routers are an option. There will be around a 10 devices connected (4 phones, an ereader, 2 laptops, 3 desktops).

Here are a few I've considered and found to be in my budget (mostly just checking amazon.ca):

    • 2 * Xiaomi ax3600 routers

    • 1 * Xiaomi ax9000 router

    • some sort of prosumer router + 2 ap setup?

    • 1 * archer ax90

    • 1 * dlink ax5400

    • 1 * Asus rt-ax92u

    • 2 * tp link deco x60

    • 1 * netgear rax45-100nas

    • 2 * netgear mk62

I'm not too familiar with what's good now so I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction. If you guys have a recommendation or better place to get a good price from (in canada) please let me know.

Best home router in terms of software?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:22 PM PDT

I am looking for a new router with good software. As I understand, DD-WRT and Tomato have kind of fallen out of favor. Things I am worried about are:

    • NAT Loopback
    • Device naming and static IP
    • Non-clunky port forwarding
    • Subnet/VLAN keeping less trusted devices separated from my regular network
    • WDS and wired bridging (low priority but nice to have)

Aside from software, I'd need the typical 4 wired connections and an external antenna option would be a nice to have.

    Preferably under $150.
