Smart trackers are going to become a mess.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:55 PM PDT

Now that every single manufacturer is going to create their own version of them and they would all only work within their own ecosystems.

Current examples are - Samsung smart tags? Only with Samsung phones. Apple Air tags? Only with Apple products.

Google needs to create their own smart tracker API which 3rd party trackers can plug in to ASAP. Using Google Play services, this network would be far bigger than any other 3rd party ecosystem and would work on all android phones. Now If we wanted to jump ship to another manufacturer, we risk having our key chain trackers become paperweights. Please spam Google with feedback everywhere as the same shit had already happened with Nearby share and messaging services back then.

I apologize for my poor English as I am not a native english speaker.

Just Switched From iPhone To Pixel. Still Using Apple Watch

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:55 AM PDT

Obviously it doesn't make sense to purchase an Apple Watch if you're not an iPhone user, but in my case, since I had an iPhone and the Watch and then switched to the Pixel, I've just held on to the Apple Watch for now and found that I can still do the following:

    THE SETUP

I did actually get rid of the iPhone, so I have the Watch set up with the "Family Member Setup" feature on my wife's phone.

    WHAT STILL WORKS

    - I can use the App Store ! Even if it needs a login, it still uses iCloud Keychain to fill out the info, or I can use scribble to enter it manually. I didn't think I could use it at all but this is pretty great. It looks like they've removed any apps that would be useless without an iPhone (like the camera remote apps)

    - I still get my 3 rings for Move, Stand, and Exercise, and I can change the goals right from the Watch itself. What i've been doing is just manually entering the info into Google Fit on the Pixel.

    - I have Apple Music so I'm using the Android app but I can also stream music from the Music and Radio apps directly off the Watch. I can't sync a playlist (for offline access) but I can stream anything.

    - I still have iMessage using my email address, so I use that on the iPads and Mac, and I can also send and receive from the Watch.

    - Walkie Talkie still works

    - Find My Friends works

    - I can install updates right from the Watch. I can also use my wife's iPhone to use the Watch app to do the update, but I don't see why I'd ever need to do that since it works pretty well from the Watch itself.

    - And most of the other Apple apps work just as they would if I had my own iPhone since they just use my Apple ID (Reminders, Calendar, Mail, Find People, Compass, Maps, etc.). The voice recorder and other utility apps like Calculator also work of course. I can even use Phone as long as I'm calling an Apple ID and not a land line (or Android user lol)

    WHAT DOESN'T WORK

    - heart rate change notification and ECG (I can still measure my heart rate, but I can't get alerts for unexpected changes in heart rate or do an ECG, I assume because of the broken link to Apple Health)

    - Apple Pay; although strangely enough it leaves the Wallet app on there, with no way to add a card to it. Maybe it's to add Apple Cash as an allowance thing for kids ? But I definitely can't add a credit card

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra Vs Mi 11i Vs Mi 11 Camera Comparison!

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:36 AM PDT

I have spent almost a week with the Pixel 4a 5G and it's been a nice but frustrating experience.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:03 PM PDT

A brief history: I'm agnostic to mobile phone operating systems and try to keep an open mind. If I get frustrated by a company's decisions I'll take my money elsewhere and try to find another device that will work best for me. I usually buy a flagship phone every 2.5-3 years and do my research.

I was a huge fan of Sidekick phones, pre-ordered the first Android phone, the HTC Dream/G1, when it debuted. Loved it and suffered through early Android, jumped ship to an iPhone 4 a few years later (I blame the Samsung Vibrant). Had an iPhone 6 but left when it was revealed that they were throttling my CPU and lying about it. Moved to a Samsung S8 and liked it a lot but Samsung decided to fuck OneUI and inject my flagship phone's default apps with ads plus slow updates. After comparing a lot of devices I purchased a Pixel 4a 5G a week ago. I had pre-ordered the first Nexus phone when it debuted but they had inventory issues so happy to finally try a Google phone especially after working on a few commercials for the Pixel phones over the years, haha. (I'm the one with the boom mic) Also note that I heavily-prefer and almost need a headphone jack on a phone, luckily there are many options available.

Positives: What I like about the Pixel 4a 5G

    • Battery is excellent, like really excellent. I got over eight hours of screen time on 50% brightness, wifi/bluetooth/5G on, without battery saver engaged with 15% battery still remaining. Battery life was a major concern for me and the 4a5G has exceeded my expectations in this dept.

    • Stock Android 11 is really smooth. I've had no hangups, glitching, or freezing in my first week which sounds normal but has been a rarity for everything but iPhones in my experience. The interface is cleaner than Samsung's One UI and I'm happy to now be in the front of the line for updates after being the very last (unlocked phone on ATT, I guess OnePlus folks got it worse overall).

    • Affordable price for good hardware. This is the cheapest phone I've bought in the last decade and the hardware is surprisingly good. I thought I'd notice the screen downgrade coming from an S8 but have not. The fingerprint scanner is better than the S8's, camera is better than most if not all on the market, and it comes with 128gb storage as standard which let me not worry about the absence of a microSD slot. IT HAS A 3.5MM HEADPHONE JACK! The processor and RAM are great for a phone this price and I'm not worried about obsolescence anytime soon. Phone feels solid and the battery is amazing. Other than a discounted Samsung S20 FE this is the best phone at this price point (~$500USD at this time).

    • Data transfer to new Pixel was easy and mostly worked (see below about galleries). They even included an adapter for older phones and was literally plug and go. This is great for people moving over.

    • The fabric Google phone case is a nice change from rubber and plastic. It seems minor but the fabric case feels great, offers adequate protection (for me), and offers a different look without looking over-the-top like brightly-colored cases usually do. Hope more manufacturers ho this route.

    Complaints and Frustrations

    • Stock Android seems to fall somewhere between 'as simple as iOS!' and 'customize everything like One UI!' but in doing so it isn't really providing the benefit of either. I've followed Android before the first release, I've rooted phones, I've made a Hackintosh and built my own PCs, and still I had a bunch of frustration digging in the system settings. If I were coming from an iPhone and had never used Android I would have returned the Pixel. I've been tempted a few times to return it and get a Samsung but refuse to buy another until they fix their bloatware problem (if they offered me a discount for ads I would be more open, otherwise: no).

    • A lot of phrases are thrown around in settings and not explained (what is 'sensitive content'?). I use two Gmail accounts and to view both in the Gmail app I had to sign in with each one into my phone's Google app and now both accounts just randomly sign in/out, frustrating when I'm trying to view photos or autofill documents.

    • Google Photos is not a great gallery. It kinda sucks compared to Samsung's gallery and both are behind vs iPhone's gallery, especially when it comes to something like selecting an image to upload to a website or app. I connected my Pixel directly to my S8 for the initial transfer and my images are now in two separate areas (Files->Images and Google Photos) with only one showing (most of the) folders from my S8. Anyone transferring from an iPhone or Samsung to a Pixel is going to not have a great time with this and it's not explained out in any of the 'Pixel Tips' or other initial documentation. Add to this they my camera app has its own gallery (great, a third gallery!) with editing options I can only find in one of the other galleries (Google Photos).

    • Notification customization sucks. Again, with skirting between iOS and One UI this is the largest failure point for me. I spent hours troubleshooting why my screen haptics worked but I couldn't receive a vibration for texts. The answer? I had one option from Accessibility turned on which allowed for touch haptics but had Battery Saver mode on which blocked all over haptics. THIS IS VERY CONFUSING AND NOT SPELLED OUT. There is no customization for Battery Saver, which also sucks. I'm near legal-blindness and prefer to just see the name of who texted me as the message body adds a bunch of text that is hard for my eyes to focus on when on the move and cannot configure this on the Pixel. I bought Textra years ago and all of these features are stripped in Android 11 with no replacements in the OS.

    • There are no options for vibration patterns and I get one long shitty vibration to choose from or total silence. I've opted for total silence as even at half-strength the long, shitty vibrate option makes a ton of noise on my work table.

    • It needs to be easier to move between Android phones. Manufacturers like Samsung are doing a disservice to the future of Android by making it hard to transfer basic things like notes and photos to another Android phone. Coming from an S8, the Pixel's navigation bar is reversed for the 'App Overview' and 'Back' buttons with no way to change it without an app. Using a large phone makes it a pain to press the back button when holding it in one hand.

    • The lack of scrolling for a screenshot is huge. I just assumed this was standard across Android and it feels goofy stepping back into a phone without it. I know it's coming in Android 12 but wtf?

I choose Android largely because of the customization it offers over iOS- I can choose what app handles texts, emails, etc but it kinda falls on its face when I can't adjust something as simple as battery saver, notification, and vibration settings. I am really liking a lot of things about the Google Pixel 4a 5G but when I can't customize very basic settings available on many other Android phones it makes for a frustrating and head-scratching experience. None of these are experimental or new features and should be standard on a phone in 2021. I've always applauded Android for being ahead of iOS in a lot of areas (copy/paste, split screen, picture-in-picture, scrolling screenshots, etc) so it's weird to feel like I'm stepping back with a new phone made to highlight the best, cleanest Android experience.
