    Need help building a Distro from Scratch

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 03:26 AM PDT

    I'm currently doing my 10th Grade Examinations, but I'm planning on doing some work for my portfolio. I'm taking on a Cybersecurity Course in one of the most prestigious Polytechnics in my country, so there's going to be a lot of competition. I think designing a Distro would be a fantastic idea and so I need help building one from the ground. I've heard of people make custom Distro's with Arch as the base, but I don't think that's enough. I'm OK with having to code a little, but if any of you have any step-by-step guide or tutorial it would be really appreciated. I've heard of LFS, but nothing much other than that. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks 👍

    Garuda or Pop OS for gaming?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:10 AM PDT

    Just curious which one is more recommended for gaming because both of them are very well supported for gaming too and look really good as well.

    still confused about touchscreen support

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:23 AM PDT

    Hello good people !

    I'm on lenovo flex6-14ikb 2-in-1 laptop, the touchscreen stopped working on windows and seems like it's a software thing (judging by the number of people experiencing same problem after same windows update and the fact that it recognizes the stylus). There's a bunch of very different articles online about how to see if linux supports this touchscreen but they're all very confusing and misleading (many assume you got it working but want gesture support, many others assume you got the right driver downloaded automatically during OS install).

    I'm on debian10 with non-free drivers enabled; no touch works; stylus does though.

    Also I tried latest manjaro and let it automatically find drivers and it didn't work either.

    Also I tried adding latest gnome on different x-servers (including x-11 and wayland), they did nothing out of the box.

    Any tips ? What would be your thought process finding solutions ?

    List of things i have considered before switching to Linux.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:17 AM PDT

    This is just a list of things i went trough. My question is more about, what have i forgotten or if there is a better alternative for what i found.

    Distro:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/FindMeADistro/comments/mbagwv/find_me_a_distro/

    Manjaro or Pop OS it is. Ill put both of them on a stick and then decide which one i prefer.

    Apps:

    - Firefox, native.

    - Netflix, web app via Chrome? https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watch-netflix-natively-linux-easy-way/ is there a better way? I don't really like Chrome.

    - Git Bash, native.

    - IntelliJ, native.

    - Paint.net, seems like i have to use GIMP?

    - Teams, native.

    - Office 365, theres a web app wrapper https://build5nines.com/run-office-365-apps-on-ubuntu-with-an-open-source-web-app-wrapper/ or i could use FreeOffice/LibreOffice. How modern do those two feel and how much do they feel like Office 365?

    - Wallpaper Engine, seems like i have to use Variety? https://peterlevi.com/variety/

    - LoL, either with Lutris or with a VM?

    - Discord, native? I saw there is something called "Franz". How good is that and can i use it for both Whatsapp and Discord?

    - Whatsapp, web app wrapper or Franz?

    - Steam, native. Only 31% of my steam library is supported apparently.

    - Spotify, native.

    - Geforce experience, Manjaro and Pop OS should take care of my video driver right?

    - Intel Driver Updater, is there something similar for Linux?

    - Notepad++, native right?

    - Cheat Engine, doesn't exist but isn't my highest prio.

    - WoT, haven't played this in a long while but apparently theres a wine version.

    - PuTTY, isn't needed on Linux because ssh is native right?

    - 7-Zip, native but is this still needed?

    - ClickMonitorDDC, native https://blog.tcharles.fr/ddc-ci-screen-control-on-linux/. Is there something more modern?

    - SuperF4, is there something similar? There are certain apps that ask you "do you REALLY want to quit". I don't like that. If i tell a program to kill itself it should obey :).

    - Xampp, native right?

    - Balena Etcher, native.

    - Epic Games, https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/mavku0/the_open_source_epic_games_client_for_linux/. I only steal the free games, never actually bought anything :)

    Someone once said Windows updates can f Linux when the system uses dual boot, is that true?

    Spectrum, a huge ISP in the states apparently blocks the use of Linux! I Decided to go back to Arch after about 6 months of not using it, because of computer issues, and never reinstalling it, but the internet does not work because Spectrum blocks it. Any solutions?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:57 PM PDT

    Yeah, you heard it right. Spectrum will block you from connecting to the internet on any Linux distribution. You guys have any solutions that may work? I was thinking of getting a new router and modem, since I have the one Spectrum gives you. Too make this more worse, Spectrum doesn't even let you access the technical panel for your modem and router! So, do you think buying new ones will help? Pretty mad right now... (In the USA)

    Email client that plays well with Outlook.com and Office 365 email accounts

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

    I have two email accounts one which I use regularly. One is an Outlook.com email address and the other is on Office 365 and I'm in need of a mail client that works well with both but mustn't use IMAP as this is disabled on the Office 365 account. I know that I can use webmail but there are times when I need offline access to my email so I would like an actual email client.

    Exchanging large 4tb hdd from one linux system to another

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:29 AM PDT

    Hi!

    Hope you guys can help. I have already set up a few linux systems but was confronted today with a problem I haven't encountered before.

    Can I just switch out one hdd (not the system disk) from one machine running Linux ubuntu, to another Linux system (possibly Ubuntu) without losing the files?

    Normally I would just transfer the files to a temp drive on the network, but in this case it's about several 4tb hdd that are almost at full capacity. They don't seem to be encrypted, so I'm hoping to save some time and just switch them out by hand.

    HDD:

    Western digital Red, Seagate Ironwolf

    capacity: 4tb, 4tb, 6tb, 4tb

    Format: EXT4

    encryption: none

    Thanks for your answers and have a nice day!

    How do you install bison??

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:29 AM PDT

    For Linux from scratch I apparently need this bison program, but I can't figure out how to install it. I extracted the tar file and read the install instructions, and the configure file was working fine until it said "cannot find output from lex, giving up." I have no idea what lex is or why it's not outputting.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:45 PM PDT

    So i just want a sff mini-itx that got 2 ssd, one for linux and one for windows10, but I'm kind of out of the loop what hardware and linux compatibility belongs.

    I want to install pop_os or Xubuntu/Lubuntu on it and use this little guy mostly for learning programming, Webdesign. And maybe it would be awesome if it's ready for the hp reverb g2, but its not a must.

    Most important for me would be a very silent little machine!

    Any help would be appreciated !

    Maybe it's a stupid time to buy parts cause of the price lol...

    Why does zip -m fail?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:22 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    I have a folder with a txt file in it. If I run zip -lf ${dest}/debug.log -r ${new\_dest}.zip ${new\_dest} everything works just fine.

    What I am trying to test is the move parameter (-m), but If I do zip -lf ${dest}/debug.log -r -m -T ${new\_dest}.zip ${new\_dest} the process just fails, output being

    ```
    Zip log opened Tue Mar 23 20:21:01 2021 command line arguments: -lf /volume1/backup/bkp_Websites/test/debug.log -r -m -T /volume1/backup/bkp_Websites/test/test_20210323.zip /volume1/backup/bkp_Websites/test/test_20210323
    zip warning: failed to get information from UnZip
    zip error: Zip file invalid, could not spawn unzip, or wrong unzip (original files unmodified)
    ```

    Any idea why that is the case? Shouldn't the process just remove the files out of the source folder after creating the archive (https://www.computerhope.com/unix/zip.htm)?

    EDIT: It seems that if I remove the -T argument (to test the validity of the archive) everything works fine. I am so confused :S

    Bash scripting resources?

    How to determine a reason of regular freezes and fix them fast ?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:16 AM PDT

    Been using debian10 with kde10 for a month, recently started getting regular lags, usually when I'm already running vscode, a browser, and am doing some action (opening a new tab, entering stuff in serarch field, other lightweight stuff). Very pissed about this, especially since unlike windex, there aint no automarically-high-priority process killer upon ctrl+alt+del. So I figured out basic htop, but it freezes too. During the freeze it often shows that one of 8 processors is 100% loaded, while other's aren't; ram is almost never 100% used up in these lags, but it's almost always around 7 out of 7.70 gb. All and any tips are welcome.

    Like maybe there's a way to open utmost-priority process-killer on top of everything ?
    Or tell vscode consoles to stop my devservers / virtualenvs when frozen for more than a few sec ?
    Or some non-stock driver update software ?

    A good way to bulletproof your Linux Installation

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:38 AM PDT

    Hello, I'm new to dual booting and I'm in need of a few pointers.

    I use my laptop for working, and use a couple of apps that are windows specific. Now, I wanted to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 and my computer was purchased in December 2017 so it's somewhat new still. It's an HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13.

    What has been your experience running Ubuntu in these? Is there anything I should look out to prevent screwing everything up? Any recommendations will be welcome.

    Thank you for your help!

    KDE and also Bluetooth in KDE question

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:30 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    I keep moving around distros a bit on a test laptop to try and find one with the same vision of what I'm looking for while also trying to heed the advice of everyone else on what to avoid or try.

    So right now I'm on Feren. I'm interested in trying out KaOS next. Now, I have no problem with constantly formatting and re-setting up the laptop as I truly think this is helping me learn the basics of Linux.

    My problem is;

    1. is there anyway that doesn't take me hours to re-setup KDE the way I like? I use the git version of LatteDock which requires some work to install, but otherwise every tweak or setting or theme is either right in KDE be default or just from the "get new cursor" or "get new themes" button in settings. Nothing crazy. I have some panel customizations, but same story. Ideally I'd like to have something that is n00b friendly to capture this so if I go on a new distro (that's KDE) I can kind of have it automagically give me my layout.

    Now onto the Bluetooth thing.

    I have an MX Master 1 and MX Master 3 logitech mouse. the 3 is my daily mouse, and the old one is a backup.

    In KDE Neon, Kubuntu, and well, that's all I've had so far the MX Master 3 pairs without a problem via Bluetooth.

    In Feren it sees it but always fails and never connects no matter what I do or try (even manually entering 0000, 1111, 1234 as pair codes on the pair option in Feren). I tried the MX Master 1 to see if it's a problem with just the mouse, but it fails too.

    Then I tried my bluetooth speaker and it failed.

    It sees the devices, so I can't imagine bluetooth is broken or it doesn't have the right driver, but I also don't yet have any idea what I'm talking about so hopefully someone can help me from going crazy here haha.
