Need advice for restoring laptop Posted: 03 Mar 2021 02:21 PM PST I'm fixing up an 8 year old laptop, it has a single 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 RAM stick. I want to double the RAM. The memory is 1600 Mhz, but the motherboard locks it to 1333 Mhz (HWInfo64 and Task Manager show that speed). Should I keep the old 4GB kit and add another 4GB, or get two new 4GB sticks? What voltage, speed, brand and CAS latency do I get? Does RAM speed degrade or does it just turn off if it dies? I'm trying to decide if its worth paying more for 2 new 4GB sticks. Can any SATA SSD work in this old laptop? It has a 5400RPM HDD now and I want to pop in an 870 EVO. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 02:14 PM PST I am looking to get a new laptop for general use and came across this one on Best Buy's website. It has a Ryzen 5 with 12 GB ram, 256 GB SSD, and 1 TB HDD and is only $469. From what I've seen at this price range pretty much everything is 4gb ram and a 128gb ssd with no hdd. I must be missing something but it seems like a great deal. [link] [comments]
Wanting to upgrade laptop with an SSD, just not sure what one to get. Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:54 AM PST I have an HP Gaming cx0056wm laptop that I got a couple years ago on Black Friday. It's been a good laptop for school/gaming but it's getting to be slow at times. I already added an extra 8GB stick of RAM to it and now I'm looking into getting an SSD for it. Here are a couple of options I'm looking at right now. I don't want to spend too much money on the SSD since I'm planning on eventually getting a desktop but I just wanted some second opinions on what I should get and how the installation process would go. If I just get a 500 GB SSD, could I copy windows + some software program files like Adobe, etc. and just keep everything else (games, photos, music, etc.) on the hard drive? Sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions here. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:33 PM PST Hey! i'm trying to find a good, powerful laptop for gaming, editing & schoolwork. I'm looking at the Asus ROG zephyrus g14, is it good? any other suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:41 AM PST Hello, peoples! My boss has tasked me with finding computers to upgrade to for the office. And I'd like some help with this matter. There are about 30 of us. We are trying to move from towers to laptops given the state of the world. For the laptop: Dock compatible or easy to connect a second screen (HDMI output), decent ram and a good processor. Not too big, not too small. (The laptop the managers currently use is the Lenovo Ideapad 330 with an Intel Core i3 8th gen 8GB Ram; they are unsatisfied with it.) Not to concerned with drive space, we have enough cloud storage for documents. Of course, the lowest possible price is important because we're buying multiple, but not so cheap that we're buying rubbish. Lol Appreciate any help!! Thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PST I still own a relatively new-ish Cyberpower PC Tracer II gaming laptop from a few years ago. I've brought it with me on a few trips and I primarily use it for photo/video editing. The specs are: - Intel i7-7700HQ 2.80 GHz - 16 GB of RAM - NVIDIA GTX 1070 - 1 TB SSD HD - 1920x1600 FHD IPS LED display screen I was taking a look at the new Dell XPS 15 9500. The specs seem pretty similar but slightly better: - Intel i7-10750OH 2.60 GHz - 32 GB of RAM - NVIDIA 1650 Ti - 1 TB SSD HD - 4k UHD touchscreen The reason I am considering this upgrade is because of: - Weight: the Dell XPS is rated at 4.5 lbs, where my current laptop is at 6 lbs. - Size dimensions: my current laptop is bulky and difficult, but not impossible, to fit into my travel backpack. It feels like a burden to carry around but it gets done regardless. I'm also seeing that a lot of 15" laptops would still be around a similar size. - Battery life: the power is terrible on my current laptop, battery life drops 50% after 24 hours of sleep mode, no use. - Display screen: still debatable since my current laptop uses IPS technology which is good for photo editing but the XPS 15 mentions it has a 100% Adobe RGB and 94% DCI-P3 color gamut for their latest screen. A review website claimed Dell's screen only attained 80-85% color accuracy but I'm assuming results may vary. Things I will be losing out on from the upgrade: - 4 GB of VRAM: Although the NVIDIA 1650 Ti is newer than the 1070 GTX, it is only 4 GB vs my current 8 GB of VRAM. - A slightly lower GHz output processor: even though the 10th gen Intel on the Dell is newer. - $$$: It's an expensive investment purchasing a new laptop, and the upgrades seem minor at face value when you already have a laptop that gets the job done. Of course, it will be an upgrade by getting a new laptop, and I can always sell my current laptop and use that for the difference. However, I'm having trouble reassuring myself that this would be a good upgrade for the price I will pay. So my questions to you would be: Did anyone have any similar predicaments or experience with the new XPS 15 9500? If you're a traveler or remote worker, has life improved for you once you switched from a heavy laptop to something more lightweight? [link] [comments]
Advice - Lenovo legion 5 or acer nitro 5 - CPUs vs GPUs performance overall Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:18 PM PST Laptop one is Ryzen 7 4800H with a 1660ti gpu, and option two is i7-9750H with a rtx 2060. Which is better value for gaming? RTX 2060 one seems better for gaming performance, but the Ryzen cpu is just much better as a whole. I'll be using it for gaming and work, but my work is mostly SAAS based - nothing intensive such as CAD or other rendering. [link] [comments]

VR support on the Acer Nitro 5 1650 Ti Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:02 PM PST I've been thinking about this the past couple of days and its been killing me ever since. So around a week ago I pulled the trigger and bought the new Acer Nitro 5 with the 1650 ti gpu and 512 GB of storage for around $730 on amazon. This is my first time ever buying a gaming laptop so I didn't fully understand the importance of the specs but after owning the Nitro 5 I know a little more. One of the primary reasons I got a gaming laptop was to be vr ready but I'm not sure if the Nitro 5 can handle it. I don't intend on playing games like Half-Life Alyx but something like VRChat and beat saber. I've been debating on just returning it and buying an open-box HP Pavilion with a 1660 ti max q at best buy for $800. At this point I'm unsure of what to do. I love my laptop but if it's not capable of vr then what's the point? Any advice for what I should do? [link] [comments]
Do You Trust Refurbished Laptops? Thoughts? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:07 AM PST Hi, Do you trust refurbished from eg Dell or Lenovo official store? I've bought a refurbished Chromebook off Amazon, never had any issues. Just more wary since I'm looking to buy a proper and more expensive computer. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks. Chromebook: Highlighting two adjacent cells in a table on Microsoft Word Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:50 PM PST I'm making a simple table in Microsoft Word and there's literally no way to highlight two adjacent cells. I mean, yeah, you'd think that clicking on one and dragging the cursor over it and then over the adjacent one would highlight both, but no. That would make your chromebook experience too easy. Your homework/schoolwork/etc has to be 100x more difficult on a chromebook or else the chromebook ain't doing it's job of raising your blood pressure, wasting your time, and destroying your grades. Does anyone know how to do this? I HATE this laptop. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:41 PM PST Questioning weather I should return the laptop I just bought with the ryzen processor for one a little more expensive with an i5 (or a 4500u ryzen but those seem hard to come by in the price range I'm looking at) [link] [comments]
Why do I want a gaming laptop? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:38 PM PST internal conflict alert Time for a new laptop (Personal, I have a separate one for work). Those slim "gaming"laptops are really catching my eye, especially with the new rtx 30 series gpus becoming more available. I don't game, but I like the idea of maybe gaming in the near future. A $500 HP or Dell would be more than enough for me but why do I want to buy a gaming laptop?? Budget is $1200 ish. They look so cool! Especially some of the more slim and portable ones. Does laptop size play a role in cooling? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:17 PM PST Iv had an Alienware 18 for the past 8 years. I think it's time to upgrade and since Iv been very satisfied with Alienware, I'm looking to get the new model. (People say it's overpriced, I think not many laptops would pull through 8 years of abuse and keep going lol) What crossed my mind was that I never really ran into any cooling issues with my laptop, and that got me thinking whether or not that was because of how huge this laptop is. New Alienware models come in 15' and 17'. I always use a monitor so a 15' will be more convenient, but would a 17' help with overall cooling and longevity due to having more space with the same hardware? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 11:16 AM PST I'm looking for a new laptop and I'm between two models. One of the things they differ is the processor. One is a AMD RYZEN 7 4700 U 2GHz and 8-Core The other one is a Intel 11th Gen Core i7 i7-1185G7 EVO 3GHz and 4-Core As you can see, one has higher speed while the other has more cores. Which one do you recommend more? What is more important? Also as you may guess, the AMD laptop is a bit cheaper Pls I need some guidelines to choose between these two [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:56 AM PST I was wondering is it best to unplug my charger from my gaming laptop when not in use for batter health wise? Also, does having my charger plugged in 24/7 use up a lot of electricity? thanks [link] [comments]
