Cheap laptop to do ethical hacking, programming, networking, ect classes Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:18 PM PDT As pretty summed up in the title I was wondering if there is a recommendation for a cheap laptop I can use where I can do various programming, networking and other related things on without worry of messing it up. Some classes have said that I could use programs on my own personal PC/laptop but would feel better on doing that stuff on a laptop that could essentially be reset if needed without concern of potentially losing important stuff on it. The only spec I saw so far is at least 4GB of RAM. Looking for something max $500, but wouldn't mind going a little higher if it is that much better. Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments]
How to boot from usb on the Sony Vaio VGN-FE31M. Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:24 PM PDT I recently got a laptop from my friend. He bought a new one and gave me his old. IDK what model it is but it is a Sony Vaio from 2005. I want to install Linux on it. I tried to boot from usb but it isn't shown as a option in the boot loader and yes I enabled boot from external device. It recognizes the usb stick but it won't boot from it I only get a blinking "_". Can anyone help me please: [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:20 PM PDT So long story short I'm a geography student and I am currently working a lot on ARCGis and QGis. I'm a first year so the things I'm doing currently are certain to get harder/more complex. Not to mention I'll also be doing a lot of coding etc. My current laptop is p decent (Huawei MateBook D). However, I've been struggling storage and RAM wise. Since my mum also wants a laptop (she really only uses it for ancestry) I'm planning on giving her mine and buying a new one for myself so any recommendations? [link] [comments]

Faulty Hardware Corrupted Page on HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15 Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:57 PM PDT Hey everyone! I have gotten the faulty hardware corrupted page blue screen error twice already since I got this laptop. It is brand new, I got it in November 2020 and it's pretty good, apart from that situation. I'm very careful with my laptop and have scanned it several times with Malwarebytes apart from having Kaspersky as my first anti-virus. I would like to know if anyone has experienced something similar and if you have some inputs on what it could possibly be? I did lots of research already and tried some of the stuff I saw online but I'm still stuck. Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you. :) [link] [comments]

Help me to buy new laptop for general use Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:48 PM PDT Hey everyone, as the title says, i want new laptop for general use, with this, i mean, mainly for watching movies, videos, listening to music and maybe Light gaming, something like csgo or old school runescape. What i expect are: good build quality, cooling system, display, speakers and overall smoothness Display size: Best would be 17,3" but if no, classic 15,6" too Display resolution: can be even 4k or 2k but if no then classic full hd is okay, good colours and overall display quality as i said above is important for me As this will be not for heavy gaming, i think cpu is more important than gpu, right? Ram: at least 16gb, i know, 8gb could be enough too, but why not 16 Disk: definitelly ssd, i think 500gb can be enough but 1tb can be better for future OS: Window, also can be without OS, this is really cheap to get, so no problem for me Preferred brand is lenovo. I am from Europe/Slovakia, so deals in Europe will be best for me. Thanks for any recommendations. [link] [comments]
Dock with 90w of power delivery on a 65w laptop Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:26 PM PDT So I want to buy a docking station (Dell WD19) for my laptop (Lenovo slim 7, with AMD Ryzen 4800U) and it says that it can output up to 90w of power to charge my laptop, but my charger is 65wat (usb-c). So my question is: Is it safe to use this dock with my laptop or it may cause damage?? [link] [comments]
Laptop just died on me what should I look for a replacement? Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PDT I'm a college student with a budget of up to $850 USD and am a Computer Information Systems major so I code some and design networks. What is a good all around laptop for weight, gaming, and school work within my budget? I was thinking about buying a razor blade off of eBay but I don't know if that's the right way to go about it. How can I make my laptop automatically charge itself then stop charging Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:48 AM PDT Hello, I have a question, is it possible to keep the charger on my laptop 24/7 and let the laptop automatically charge when it gets below 20 for example, and stop charging when it gets to 100? Older Machines, the life of an Elitebook Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:04 AM PDT A year or so ago, I went out and bought a beautiful, slim, light and reasonably quick Zenbook. it has been my daily driver and outside of blown speakers, I really cant say much bad about it. But... the reason i went out and upgraded was because the HP 8460P I was using had a battery die. Flash forward and i came across a dirt cheap replacement battery. so i pick it up, plug it in and we are back up and running. An hour or so of updates later and it is back in the race. So i start using it as a second laptop... i picked up a dock for it, (think i paid 10 bucks or so) and i have a nice little home office setup. So... What have i learned in the process of using this 13 year old computer to do actual daily work? - The old HP 8460P is absolutely still usable with current programs and tasks. It had win 10 professional on it, and really the only issue i have had was that i needed to manually reinstall the fingerprint reader drivers. Its quick and responsive, it handles pretty much everything I throw at it as well, if not in some cases, better, than my current Zenbook. It runs an I5-2540 that tops out at the same clock speed as the I-5 in the Zenbook. I bounced it up to an SSD, so startup and program launching is great. The only really intensive tasks i do on a machine is audio editing and encoding... in that specific application, it performs... just fine. - The old HP elitebooks are built like tanks. this machine is a beast... 5 lbs and square like a brick, having to carry it around through airports? Nope, not in this day and age when the zenbook does all the same stuff and weight a fraction of what the HP does. - The elitebook keyboard is a think of beauty. It is amazing what you realize you are doing without. The old HP elitebooks keyboards are amazing, even by todays standards, backlit would be nice, but wow, typing on this thing is a whole different experience that with not only the zenbook, but also many if not most other modern machines i have used. Even the trackpad... yep, its small and old fashioned, but i will admit it works well. - Repairable, upgradeable. Sigh, they just don't make em like this anymore. What else have I learned? A lot of modern features are sorta... well... look at it this way, touch screen, 360 degree rotation, usb c vs a... it just not stuff that in the course of a normal day, really matter that much. The painful part of all this is that i looked around and 8460's 840 G1's and 2's sell for peanuts... 200 to 300 bucks and honestly, i have to tell you, for 95% of normal peoples task, they are great workhorses. Am i going to get rid of the Zenbook? No, its super thin, light, has a beautiful display etc etc, but i have to be honest, could i work and play on a daily basis with the 8460p? Yep. Can I use two SSDs as seperate drives? Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:59 PM PDT I have an ASUS ROG Strix G712LV with a 512GB SSD, I bought 1TB Samsung 970 EVO. I want to have 1.5TB space that I can use (no dual boot). I'm thinking of using them as C & D drives, without raiding them. But I'm not an expert so I'm not sure if it'll be compatible or serve its purpose. I wouldn't mind combining them but since they're different sizes it might not be optimal. What should I do? Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:03 AM PDT Hi guys, I've been thinking about getting a gaming laptop to play with my kids when they visit, my budget is around £800-1000. Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:29 PM PDT I just bought a new laptop. Nothing fancy, it came with windows 10 pro. Is windows defender good enough to not warrant an antivirus? Should I get a vpn and never use the machine without one? I wish to start as I mean to go on, and start well. So please if anyone knows what I should(or could) do, I would appreciate all the help I can get [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PDT I was wondering, has anyone changed the paste on this beast yet, or opened up the back vents any to see if thermals improve? I have one myself and think it can run a little hot at times, reviews say it's better than the last gen but still pretty hot. Basically wondered if it was worth doing a few mods for longevity. Budget Laptop for Grandparents Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:19 AM PDT Hey r/laptops, I'm the "techy" one of the family, and my grandparents have asked me to get some info on a laptop for them. Problem is, i mainly deal with building desktops, so my knowledge of "decent budget laptops" is pretty low. Their current desktop computer is about 12 years old, and basically useless. My grandparents are late 70's, and will mainly use the laptop to check emails, order from amazon, check Facebook, and pay bills (hopefully). So im looking for a decent "budget" laptop. Like to keep the budget around 300-500 dollars. Most important things would be; - Bright screen, preferably 1920/1080 - Good battery life - Solid CPU Can probably skimp on storage, if anything. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:26 AM PDT Hey, I've got an old Ausus G74sx which I'm playing around with. I was wondering what was the best cpu it could take. I can add more power if need be Ive completely dissembled the laptop already, with a view of 3d printing a case around it. I was also wondering if I could get a pc style cooler for the cpu. There's gonna be an external gpu so no need to cool the onboard. Thanks [link] [comments] |
