    More repos??

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:43 AM PDT

    Sorry for being a bit dumb, but i keep comming across this issue in any deb linux, i look up software, think cool i need that, and it's not in the software store or synaptic so i usally have to add the repo in command line then install the package in command line, unfortunatly i have not come across any sort of source dump of repos.

    There could be loads of great software out there, yet i don't know about it because i have no knowlege of the repos or PPA's

    Surly there must be some sort of index if repos are popping up left & right?

    SCT (Screen Temperature Control) Not working correctly???

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:00 PM PDT

    As the title says, I am having problems with SCT on a newly built system. With my old system, SCT works just fine, but with this new system, SCT (and also REDSHIFT) do not work at all. Issuing a "sct 2700" (or any other temperature) from the terminal does nothing, no errors reported. Tried "redshift -O 2700" also does not work... but does return the following:

    Gamma ramp size too small: 0

    Failed to start adjustment method randr.

    Trying next method...

    Using method `vidmode'.

    ... and then returns to the terminal prompt.

    System Information:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G

    Monitor: Viewsonic XG2705-2K

    OS: Debian 10 (Buster), Kernel 4.19.0-14, Mate 1.20.4

    Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Installed Plex inside of docker container on Raspberry Pi, can't access any files?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:02 AM PDT

    I followed this guide to install docker and plex on my raspberry pi. I'm trying to add content to my library but I can't see anything besides the root directories, they all appear to be empty.

    I tried giving the "plex" user and "docker" user access but there is no plex or docker user. I'm not sure what to do, what do you guys think?

    I tried mounting my director in /home/pi/mnt/usb as opposed to /mnt/usb but to no avail. Any tips? I'm a complete beginner with Docker and how it operates.

    Edit: My hard drive is mounted to /mnt/usb

    My docker container looks like this

    sudo docker run -d --name plex --net host -p 32400:32400 --restart always --volume /mnt/usb/Media/Plex/config:/config --volume /mnt/usb/Media/Plex/config:/data greensheep/plex-server-docker-rpi:latest

    Edit 2: Just tried this to no avail

    ```
    -d \ --name plex \ --net host \ -p 32400:32400 \ --restart always \ --volume /mnt/usb/WD_Black/Media/Plex/config:/config \ --volume /mnt/usb/WD_Black/Media/Plex/data:/data \ --mount source=WD_Black,destination=/var/lib/docker/volumes/WD_Black/_data \ greensheep/plex-server-docker-rpi:latest ```
    Dolphin extremely high CPU usage when copying files
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 10:32 AM PDT
    For some reason copying files in Dolphin pegs the CPU, to the point that the entire UI becomes unresponsive (ksysguard will stutter while updating, and even moving the mouse round the screen stutters and delays) until the copy operation has completed.
    It seems to happen when there is a lot of data to copy - I triggered it when copying about 2.5GiB of mp3s from a flash drive to my SSD, but copying ~300MiB of pictures did not.
    Interestingly copying the same folder from one directory to another in my home folder, also caused high CPU usage, but the system did not lock up, it continued to respond normally.
    System specs:
    Lenovo Thinkpad T440
    Kubuntu 20.04.2
    KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5
    How to get unrounded corners?
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PDT
    I'm currently in the process of switching from Windows 10 to Ubuntu. Problem is: I really don't like the UI. I really love the sharp edged corners of Windows 10, but Ubuntu has rounded corners everywhere. Any way of unrounding the corners?
    Alternatively, is there a distro that has square corners specifically?
    HELP! Kinda bricked my Ubuntu and I cannot see my Bootable usb in Boot menu
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:35 AM PDT
    So I've been working with Ubuntu for a couple weeks now on my School PC and I didn't really like it so I tried to use my bootable USB with Windows to switch back. But the USB didn't show up in my Boot menu and after closing my boot menu and removing my USB Ubuntu just died on me.
    And now I get this black screen:
    I've also tried to select \"Advanced options for Ubuntu\" which takes me to a Selection screen of 4 options:
    None end up working :c
    I made my Bootable USB the normal way Using a Windows 10 ISO and Rufus on my Windows 10 Desktop (Not the Bricked School Laptop)
    Is there any way to fix this? or any way for me to at least see my USB in the boot menu? and yes its a Bootable USB its the same one I used to install Ubuntu.
    Thank you for any Advice!
    EDIT:
    I made a couple Pictures of my BIOS maybe this can show some light on what's wrong with my PC atm.
    I've tried u/doc_willis's comment about Ventoy and now the USB does show up in boot. But when I reboot my PC and have it load the USB I get another black screen with a Lock on it saying \"Security Boot Fail\" so I'm guessing I didn't do everything correctly in the BIOS
    EDIT 2:
    Thank you all for your help and time, if anyone else has this problem later on and stumbles across this post the comment chain of u/doc_willis was the one that fixed it for me.
    How can I recover data from my disk when there is no more operating system?
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:58 AM PDT
    Greetings,
    (Please don't be too harsh, I don't know much yet about Linux)
    I have two HP laptops, I've installed Zorin OS on the first one, and Manjaro XCFE afterwards. I've installed Ubuntu on another laptop of mine a few weeks ago.
    I have two other computers that still have Windows 10, but they were not available at the time of the incident. I brought my printer to my apartment last weekend (it was at my parents' house with the two computers with Windows 10), to print paper. But it didn't work on the laptop with Ubuntu, it considered the printer not turned on, when it was. I tried to see how it worked for Manjaro XCFE, but I saw that it was too complicated.
    So I decided to reinstall Windows 10 on the computer that has Ubuntu, but I couldn't use Unetbootin, Woeusb or other software. I managed to get to the Windows 10 installation screen, but I couldn't partition the drives, so I was having trouble getting past that screen. (There was an error message that said the drive had to be NTFS).
    One time I got through it, but after Windows installed on the device, it rebooted, and I went back to the Windows 10 installation screen. Then later on, for reasons unknown, I had no OS. (But it doesn't matter, because there was no data on it.)
    I tried to convert my USB stick into a bootable stick for Windows 10, on the pc with Manjaro (the one I use to take notes in class), but since my USB stick was no longer visible and unusable, I had to do some things related to the disk during the evening, on the GParted software. But for some unknown reason, when I turned on my pc this morning, I got the following message: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key".
    After the incident, I tried to go back to my parents' house to use Rufus on Windows 10, and install Manjaro on my flash drive, but when I went to the demo, I could not find any of my files on my laptop. For fear of deleting everything, I did not install Manjaro.
    I saw on the Internet that there were software on some Debian distributions that can recover data (like Test Disk, etc...), so I wanted to directly create a bootable key under Debian to try to install it on the computer. But again, on the installation screen, with the disk installation part, I was afraid to do anything and to erase the data on the disk, so I didn't install the distribution.
    TL;DR : My computer has no OS anymore, but there were some important data on it, and want to know how to retrieve it.
    Thanks you in advance !
    Can't adjust screen brightness...I'm so close to the solution, but I can't figure it out!
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:05 AM PDT
    Fairly new to Linux, installed Mint on a laptop as a dual-boot with Windows 10.
    My laptop. It has a processor from 2020 on it, that's probably why I'm having this issue because it's unsupported or something I dunno.
    I have a bug where I can't adjust the screen brightness (also stuck at max). But this problem fixes itself when I:
    1. Log into Windows 10
    2. Restart
    3. Boot into Mint
    4. I can now adjust screen brightness
    And of course, when I power off the laptop and then turn it back on, the problem returns.
    Supposedly this is because the proper firmware isn't loading on Linux, but persists after booting Windows 10. However, I have no idea what to do with that information. I tried updating the "linux-firmware" package, but that is at its latest version. My hardware is probably too new or something.
    Any suggestions? Also tell me if this is something that can only be solved after years of coding experience involving Linux. I'm imagining a worst-case scenario where I would have to write my own firmware(?). Please inform me if this train of thought sounds dumb to you (and why).
    Thanks
    Beginner looking for advice how to bind the extra Logitech mouse button to Super_L+s. Linux Mint 20.1, tried Piper, Easystroke, bxindkeys, xev, xdotool. Any feedback is highly appreciated!
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 10:13 AM PDT
    Hi there!
    My OS: Linux Mint 20.1 64-bit Gnome version: 3.36.8 (I'm using Gnome 3 DE) Windowing system: Wayland Mouse: Logitech G700s
    So here I am, back asking for some guidance. I've been experimenting with various Linux distros and so far I've managed most obstacles with the help of previous forum posts and guides by people who have ran into similar situations. However after trying to fix this one with online resources, I've hit a dead end. As a sidenote, I'd like to mention that on Ubuntu (regular ubuntu, not Mint) the forward/backward and vol up/down buttons on the mouse worked out of the box (but the other extra buttons did not work).
    The problem: I have a Logitech G700s mouse & and I can't get the extra mouse buttons to perform actions that require keystrokes. To be more specific, I would like to bind mouse "button 12 (b:12)" to keyboard Super_L+s.
    These are the solutions I've found and tried:
    1. Found out that software named Piper exists, I've installed it from Mint software manager and succeeded in binding some mouse extra buttons. For example binding any of the extra buttons to "forward" or "backward" works perfectly.
    2. When I try to bind any of the mouse buttons to any keystrokes & apply the changes, Piper does not save the changes.
    3. I also tried this guide (https://classicforum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=2676.0) using Easystroke, but on the 11th step where you are supposed to "Click somewhere on the screen with the button on your mouse that you wish to configure" and I click on the screen with my mouse button 12 nothing happens and it doesn't record the button (which is weird because Piper shows that that button is button 12 and it didn't give me any error when applying that button to b12).
    4. Then I found a alternative solution using software named bxindkeys, xev, xdotool (https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/11/how-to-bind-mouse-buttons-to-keyboard.html).
    5. I followed this tutorial, found out that on my keyboard Super_L is 134.
    6. At the point where I was supposed to edit .xbindkeysrc, I added the following commands into it and saved and followed the rest of tuturials steps:
    "xdotool key 'Super_L+s'" b:12
    and
    "xdotool key '134+s'" b:12
    Mouse button 12 does not press Super_L+S. Any ideas what to try next? Im super thankful for any advice, suggestions, thoughts etc.
    Cheers :)
    Should I switch to Fedora (currently an Ubuntu user)?
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:31 AM PDT
    I've been reading about Fedora lately and I actually think it might be a good distro to switch to.
    Reasons:
    • I feel Ubuntu is a bit too outdated and slow with regards to packages. For example, I'd like to use GNOME 40 asap (when it's gotten an official, stable release that is), but Ubuntu is apparently postponing it to 21.10 while Fedora is getting it soon. Most packages in the default Ubuntu repos seem pretty old too. Fedora is not as cutting edge as Arch, for example, though, which is a pro in my case since I don't want to deal with potential breakage and untested software but still would like to be more up to date than Ubuntu.
    • Ubuntu had that incident in the past with Amazon and is maintained by Canonical, and then there's Snaps... I prefer Fedora's "by the community, for the community" concept, focus on FLOSS and Flatpak is much nicer to me.
    • Ubuntu is too opinionated. Like, just leave GNOME the way the GNOME devs intend, please, don't mess around with it too much, that's my job. It also tries to paint everything the way it wants, while I want to theme everything myself.
    There's just two issues though: package availability and support. I understand that Fedora is one of the most popular distros after Ubuntu, but Ubuntu still is pretty much the golden standard for support (especially when it comes to games, Steam only supports Ubuntu for example), not to mention that some odd ducks out only offer .deb files (not sure what to do with those in Fedora). Ubuntu (and Debian) also have more packages than Fedora.
    Alright forgive me for asking this noob question but hope someone will clear this.
    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:08 AM PDT
    I've been using linux for around a month as my daily driver now. Recently I started using wm and I store my dotfiles locally on my laptop but I see a lot of people use github to store their dot files. So I created a github account and when I try to upload my dot files, I cannot add a folder to my repo. I don't want to individually move every single file. I want to move it as a folder and I need to know how to create a new folder inside an existing repo.
    Thanks in advance and sorry for asking such a noob question.
    Edit: I use github on browser and when I drag and drop the folder it says the file is hidden.
    I've just started using Linux
    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:54 PM PDT
    Hello, I'm new to linux, not a tech savvy person but just wanted to try something new and I was just trying it a few days ago by installing Linux mint 20.1 cinnamon on a virtual machine. I was just doing some Web browsing stuff on it and I realise that overall the Web browsing experience is somewhat smooth but sometimes there are some stuttering and when scrolling pages it is consider smooth but also abit sluggish. Even on desktop sometimes there are minor stutter that causes me to open some programs which I did not intend to. I tried following some speed up guide from the forum and even update the kernel from 5.4 to 5.8 which helps significantly but sometimes still stutter. I was wonder if it is because of I'm running it inside a VM? Also I plan to explore Linux further by perhaps installing it in dual boot on my laptop instead of using a VM on my laptop. But I've read articles that suggest not to dual boot Linux and Windows on your mainstream device (which my laptop is) So I'm not sure if I should do that. Also, if it is ok for me to dual boot Linux and Windows on my laptop, should I install it on my SSD or HDD. My laptop is currently running with a 512 GB SSD and I plan to add on a 1TB HDD. (I know install it on a SSD would be better but I have limited SSD storage as Windows 10 took a large portion of it)
    My laptop spec: Intel i5 8300H 12GB RAM Nvidia gtx 1050 512GB SSD
    VM for Linux mint: VMware workstation Pro 16 I've allocated 4GB of ram and I'm not sure if I done it right for the processor I just choose 1 with 4 cores and 20GB for the storage.
