[March 2021] State of IT - What is hot, trends, jobs, locations.... Tell us what you're seeing! Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:12 AM PST Let's keep track of latest trends we are seeing in IT. What technologies are folks seeing that are hot or soon to be hot? What skills are in high demand? Which job markets are hot? Are folks seeing a lot of jobs out there? Let's talk about all of that in this thread! [link] [comments] |
How do I politely tell my ex coworkers to stop asking me questions? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:34 PM PST I left my job several months ago because everyone was overworked and underpaid and overall miserable. I wrote a lot of the automation and had knowledge of a lot of randon things other people didn't, which I did my best to document before I left. But people keep asking me things, which at first I was ok with but now it's been months and I'm not getting paid for that shit. I feel bad for their situation because I know it fucking sucks, but the company dug their own grave. Is there any way to approach this that won't fuck up my friendship with them? [link] [comments] |
Why does Dice.com "lie" about the posting date for their job listings? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:14 AM PST Title, I put "lie" in quote because I'm not entirely sure where they're getting the posting date from. For example and context, there's a few positions I see on all the other posting sites that are at least a month old, yet I'll fire up Dice and I'll see the same job with saying it was posted 0-3 hours ago. I'm mainly trying to avoid applying to a job that was posted months ago and is either already filled or has a backlog of hundreds of applicants. Also trying to see what was ACTUALLY posted very recently. On a side note while I'm posting here, are they any other sites as good as Dice for remote entry level IT positions? I get all the local ones off LinkedIn and Indeed or just manually checking local companies. [link] [comments] |
Job posting was taken down. Three days later it was reposted Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:26 AM PST I interviewed for a job, and then two weeks later the job posting was removed. Waited 3 days later and then inquired about my status and received no response. The next day the job was reposted. What does this mean? Are they looking for a specific person internally? Should I assume I'm not getting the position? [link] [comments] |
Do native English speakers ever feel like you're ESL? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:11 AM PST There's times I've been typing e-mails and replies that I sometimes feel like English is a second language for me after staring at CLI configs and pcaps all day long. Anyone else end up feeling the same way? wife# conf t [link] [comments] |
Manager is requiring me to take one: CISSP or CISM? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PST Hi all — Looking for some opinions! I currently work in the 2LOD technology risk team at an asset manager, having previously worked in IT audit at a big four. My manager wants me to begin working towards CISSP or CISM, he doesn't mind which. Most of the research I've done suggests CISSP, but as my role is not mega technical, I thought CISM might be better. I'm also conscious that he's looking for me to get one of these qualifications quite quickly. Is there a big time discrepancy in what's needed to study for them? Is there a view that one is a lot harder than the other? Any help would be appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
What is the cheaper and reliable Cloud environment to host virtual machines right now? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:51 AM PST I am in mid-size company and managers sometimes hear about Cloud and want to move something to cloud someday. But they use legacy ERP system that's depend on Windows Server and MS SQL Server, it will worth to move to Cloud using RDS to connect the clients to ERP Software?? [link] [comments] |
Can a Convicted Felon with Fraud Charges Work in IT? Is it Possible? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:59 AM PST Hello, I am a convicted felon (healthcare fraud for overbilling services to the Department of Mental Health. I didn't receive any kickbacks or gain from this financially at all. I wanted to meet the company's productivity requirement and fucked myself over, legally and ethically). I am on probation and currently paying restitutions. I have my BS and master's degree in a field that I am barred from. Do you think it is worth it to pursue a career in this field? I was thinking of getting my associates degree in Informational Technology. Due to this fraud conviction, I wasn't sure if I should give up going into IT or if there is another avenue in this field to go into. Thank you so much. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to jump from tech support to desktop support? Or will I have to do help desk first? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:46 AM PST Title pretty much says it all. I'm currently working at a call center environment fixing internet. I spend all my time after work studying my ass off and working towards certifications. I take my first cert test next week. If I get a couple certs under my belt, build and document some home labs, and have a year of experience, would it be reasonable to expect to be able to get a desktop support job? I'm really trying to get away from sitting behind a desk answering phones and move more towards working with systems. [link] [comments] |
How many times should you reach out for a job you really want? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:45 AM PST It's been a bit over 2 weeks since my interview with a place I really want to work at. I've reached out once a week since then, but I heard nothing back after the second update request. The job gave me very positive vibes/talked me up about how much they like me right after the interview and during the first update. Should I just give up and wait from now on? Or should I reach out one more time at the beginning of next week or the end of this week? I really want this position, but I have other interviews coming up. Essentially: Am I being super annoying by reaching out once a week? Is it annoying to reach out at the end of this week to ensure my last email didn't just get lost? [link] [comments] |
Updated my Resume and Cover Letter after some feedback from this sub, how do they hold up? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:48 AM PST Note, I do customize both for different applications, but the general layout is the same. [link] [comments] |
Guide/Path to being a support specialist or a technician Posted: 04 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PST Hey guys, I'm a Nigerian studying computer science in my final year, I'm looking to become an IT support specialist, I just started with the Google professional IT course, but I want to know if there's a particular path I can follow ,what to learn and what not to. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Beginner (Entry Level) Certifications, Advise/Discussion Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:55 AM PST Hi guys! I apologize if the question is out of the topic and purpose of this subreddit, but gonna ask anyway. I have some coding experience, but am relatively new in Networking. I started learning Linux a few months ago and this kinda sparked the desire to learn Networking as well, because after all, what is Linux without networking knowledge, right? I wanted to ask here where should I start from with certifications, because as far as I search the net, I do see that there have been a lot of changes in Cisco certifications. As I can see, the CCNA cert includes several other certs, but I am afraid I didn't manage to understand how exactly it works. Should I start with Comptia A+, what is your opinion about it as a beginning? Or maybe the CCT/CCENT? Are they equivalent to each other, or is there a difference between both? If so, which one should come first? Any advise would be truly appreciated, since I would like to know where should I start my exciting adventure from. [link] [comments] |
I was fired after a month of getting my first Job in Dubai Posted: 03 Mar 2021 11:29 PM PST So I was hired as a content writer after rounds of interview in Dubai. I was happy, I thought I was getting back on track. It was a startup digital marketing firm where the bosses were clueless about digital marketing. They hired a digital marketer and his job changes to only doing graphic designing, well when I joined after doing bit writing here and there social media marketing was pushed onto me and I had to work on that as well as the writing. Well I understood it was a startup and pressure was something that I had to encounter. As someone new to this I tried my best to juggle to roles when I was being paid for less. Due to there being too many tasks and zero management the quality suffered. Sometimes I got blamed for content my boss wrote. I was shouted at and given no feedback on improvement. One day I ask my boss that I wanted to focus more on improving my writing skills and that I couldn't do that while I handled social media including report creation, they told me they wouldn't reduce my tasks. I just told I understood and went forward with whatever they gave me, I tried my best even though timings were 9 to 6 pm I stayed till 10 and above to finish my task, reducing any personal time I had. Whatever content I've written I have always sent them to my boss for review and only after their approval have I gone ahead with publishing and I've asked them if there were errors notify me and I will correct them yet there was no feedback. Yesterday they call me and tell me I had one spelling error which I overlooked and told me a content writer is not needed. They told me I was not responsible and told me we have better experienced candidates available and I was no longer needed, I was given all my docs back and let go. I don't know how to go forward and find something now, I need a job to take care of my family I don't know what to do anymore, I feel lost. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:48 AM PST Hey guys! I hope I don't bother you.. The title is pretty self explanatory.. I will hopefully reach my bachelor degree in a few semesters and I have no clue where I will fit in? I have fun and interest in all sort of things, like system-analytics, business intelligence development, database-administration etc. I have thoughts like where do I have the highest fun/earning ratio, which job is not that stressful like the other ones, where is the certain job bringing me.. Am I the only one thinking so much about this? I need help.. What are you guys doing, and what do you love/hate about your job? What would you have done different? [link] [comments] |
Interview Tips and tricks! Be aware of these questions and of their expectations!!! Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:45 AM PST I am ConfigureError and I have 5 years experience in Information Technology. 1 year help desk, and 4 years network administration. I want to give you tips about looking for a job and what to expect in interviews. I have had three jobs in IT. 1 for a private company and 2 jobs for government organizations.
Certs only get you passed HR. The true test is when you are in front of the IT Director and the Network Manager or System Manager and they ask you to configure a switch, set up group policy, or navigate a Linux machine. If you can, lab every day. I never really been asked subnetting questions.
Everyone is getting Certs, you can't enter the field with just one anymore. I have my Net Plus and I am working on my CCNA and then after that I will be working on my Linux plus. I got kinda lucky when it came to entering IT because I worked for a small government in the country.
a. What are the seven layers of OSI? b. What layer is where the most problems reside? c. What is ether channel? Explain it to me in detail. How would you configure ether channel. d. Create an interface and put an IP address on that interface. e. How would you do a site survey? f. What is an RFP? g. What was the biggest problem you solved in your years in IT? h. Give me 4 switch commands and tell me what they do and when will you use them. I. A user can get to the internet but cannot access network resources, what is the problem and what would you do to solve it? j. What are two common command prompt commands that are used for troubleshooting. k. A user calls saying they have internet but their ip phone can not make or receive calls. The phone is plugged into the same port as the computer. What is the problem.
It's always good to keep track on how you solved issues in your previous jobs so you can bring them up in your interview
Companies will expect you to know how to deliver customer service. Read up on these skills and how you will follow up!!! I hope this helps!!! Configure Error!!!! [link] [comments] |
What Specialty do you think will be the next "BOOM"? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:12 AM PST Since a lot of time, there are some booms on the IT industry where people who enter it first, get some great positions almost for life. Like when it boomed the white hackers security it jobs 10 years ago, then it came big data scientist, etc. What do you thin it's starting to bloom and explode as a great career path to choose for the next maybe 5/10 years? I have 5 years as a helpdesk and I want to grow, but I don't know what to focus? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:59 AM PST I've experience with support level 1 and level 2 Dealing with Windows Server, Linux and network configurations for small-mid size companies. In my current job I am in mid-size factory with some Dell R240-540 using Windows Server running legacy ERP system and MS SQL Server database. In network they use only Pfsense as a router/firewall and switches and access points of lot of brands (Dell, TP-Link, HP, Ubiquiti). I want to move to a bigger company, but I don't know what to focus. I like network, but I didn't have the opportunity to put hands on in Cisco devices. Where I live, in Brazil, only huge companies can deal with the expensive Cisco price, so most of companies are using free solutions like Pfsense/Endian firewall or cheap Fortinet/Sonic Wall UTM device. I did a MCSA course from CBT Nuggets and it was great to improve in my job, but Microsoft killed MCSA exam, so I don't know if I will want to study for Azure, because AWS feels just better. So I am deciding if I want to do AWS training or focus in other thing like Java and Angular to become a developer. I am doing CBT Nuggets training for CCNA, but I don't know if it will worth. I've started my degree this year too. I want to learn about everything, but I don't have time for that, how you choose what career path you want to focus? [link] [comments] |
What courses should I take for Solution Architect / Operations manager Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:31 AM PST Hi, I'm currently working as ICT-Engineer consultant towards one of the biggest IT firms, And I'm thinking of switching over to Solution Architect or operation manager for an bigger challenge. I received at tip from some SA's that I should start taking courses in kuberenetes. I don't hold and certificates and is self taught, do you anyone if you guys have recommendation in which sites? I should check for courses and exams, I'm currently planing in finishing Microsoft Azure, but I don't know which courses I'm really missing and should go for. Operation manager, I have secured leadership courses with in my consulting company. I will also be taught on the job with my client current operation manager since I'm usually stand in for him. Best Regards Koling3 Edited spelling error. [link] [comments] |
Being considered for tier2. Not sure what I should expect Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:57 AM PST I've been working tier1 for about 8months and recently was told I was being considered for tier2 because they had open position and wanted to hire internally. As you would have guessed I'm very excited. It's a good company and this shows me that they like to promote from within. But not sure I'm guaranteed and I'm concerned what would happen if something where I yo change their mind. Not sure if it's a matter of hr and then talking it out. Or if this is going to be a interview process where I'm going to be evaluated. I've never been promoted like this so not sure if I should be prepared to prove myself or if I'm currently under hightened monitoring. Any feedback would be great. They have to know it would be a learning curve for me at this point. I've picked up stuff, but I'm sending stuff over to them all the time that I can't figure out. Atleast in the time we are given. Tier1 has limited time we are able to work on tickets before they must be escalated. [link] [comments] |
Resume examples of help desk experience? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:55 AM PST We always see posts for resume advice to get a help desk job. I've been trying unsuccessfully to find good examples of help desk experience on a resume to get out of a help desk role. Most advice I see is to have numbers or some sort of metrics on the resume but I don't know if "reset 1000 passwords a month" , "processed 1200 emails a month", or "average call time of 5 minutes with 37% of tickets resolved on first contact" are the kind of examples I need to be putting on the resume. Any tips, advice or examples are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Is University of Phoenix easier than other online schools? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:41 AM PST Are the classes easier than classes at something like University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC)? It seems like it but I'm not sure. Major would be information technology or general studies or maybe psychology, but more likely the first two. [link] [comments] |
Is my experience worthless ? Results from job searching says so. Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:41 AM PST Hi, I'd like to ask you for a CV review. I'm a web / software / app developer. My circumstances is telling me that my work and experience is completely worthless and I'm considering quitting since I've made no money (except from 2 months of working at eComp) despite of how much I love what I do. I've lost confidence in keep going. I've got unfinished commercial project but lost motivation to finish it based on my previous experience. Except from the experience at eComp everything is experience I've gained working from my personal projects. Please see my CV here https://markalexa.pythonanywhere.com/download It's OK to be brutally honest with me. Insincere feedback or saying "just keep going" is no good to me after 4 years of developing projects. Thank you for taking time. [link] [comments] |
What kind of jobs should I be looking for post graduation? Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:39 AM PST Hello everyone, first time poster here! I am a Computer science major with a concentration in information security and I am set to graduate next fall. I am wondering what kind of jobs should I truly shoot for post graduation, I am interested in networking and computer systems and have an internship this summer working with some computer systems. I know most start at help desk, but if I can help it, I'd like to start with a bit of a higher position, maybe a system or network admin role. I have been working as an IT tech For my college for a year now and have experience in that. What roles should I be applying that are reasonable for me to get this fall? Thanks for the answers! Any good blogs or alternatives to follow? Looking for recommendations Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:33 AM PST Would anyone have any recommendations of a good blog or maybe something like an Itcareerquestions alternative? I find that since I'm not in the beginning stages of my career anymore, I wanted to try and find some things worth reading or spending time on before bed or in my free time [link] [comments] |
