Home Networking Access Point 5GHz Channels: To Overlap or to not Overlap?

Access Point 5GHz Channels: To Overlap or to not Overlap?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 02:08 PM PDT

    Hi,

I live in the UK and want to configure two Ubiquiti WiFi APs within my home. I'd like a second opinion on what 5GHz channel choices make most sense.

Based on my research, I should be avoiding 5GHz channels above 48 as these are subject to DFS checks for interference with radar...

Here is the 5GHz RF Environment scan from my Ubiquiti AP. Only the channels shaded in grey are DFS-free.

This leaves me with three options:

    1. 2x40MHz channels. AP A: Channel 38. AP B: Channel 46. No channel overlap, but using 40MHz channels might limit throughput.

    2. 1x80MHz channel. Both AP A and AP B on Channel 42. This would cause overlap, but perhaps having 80MHz of spectrum would be more beneficial.

    3. Putting my APs on the (uncongested) DFS channels. (My nearest airport is 4.1 miles away as-the-crow-flies, although this is a light airport mostly just used by Cessnas. I'm not sure if this would trigger DFS?)

Has anyone been in a similar situation, how would you configure this?

How much does a Chinese router phone home?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:30 AM PDT

    What would be the possibilities?

I've seen some nice routers from Xiaomi but I also see comments about them where users state they've seen the routers send a lot of data to China. I've asked in r/Xiaomi about who as actual proof/examples about this but no reply. I am starting to think its mostly suspicion and fear. Now I also have these too but I am looking for verification.

What would be the possible threats? Would they send all my DNS queries to their own servers? Check browser history, inject advertisements? I've seen all these fears in the comments but what do you all think?

I am looking at the Xiaomi AX3600 and AX6000 specifically.

Edit: who is downvoting my replies to people's comments? It's okay but can someone say why? I don't understand.

    Using a PC remotely

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:57 PM PDT

I am looking for some advice on how to remotely connect to my PC that is in another room. For context, here are my specs:

Host (PC that I am attempting to stream from)
    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
ASUS ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Formula Motherboard
    32 GB Corsair Dominator RAM
    Radeon RX 580
    2TB Seagate FireCuda 520

Client (PC that I will be physically accessing)
    Intel i7 975 Extreme
    Intel DX58SO Motherboard
24 GB Ram (can't remember the speed)
    Nvidia 550ti
    Multiple HDDs in Raid 0

Here is the situation I'm in. I like to do gaming and music production. My newer PC (what I am calling the "host", correct me if I am using the terms incorrectly) is capable of handling both - even though I could use a GPU update. My old PC - "client" - basically can't keep up anymore.

But while my new PC can do both, I don't have a way to utilize space for both, because I use a Volair Sim chassis as my main desk. https://volairsim.com/

It's great for both gaming and work. I have a HOTAS connected, button boxes, etc. But it doesn't leave room for any piano keyboards, fader ports, etc. Even if I were to remove all my gaming gear, there is not a way to have those devices sitting in comfortable positions for long term use. Essentially, I have no room for music production.

Without buying a new PC that essentially does everything my current one does, I was hoping to "stream" the host to the client. The problem is that I'm not sure what I'm looking to do is possible, so before I start going to buy a bunch of equipment, I was wondering if this is feasible.

I would need my music equipment (all connected through USB) to be connected to my client PC which would be in another room, and latency to be relatively low. This would including not only the input of the devices, but the sound I am getting back that is feeding to my client PC.

A friend of mine suggest I look into RemoteFX. I've tried reading up about it, but it seems support has been somewhat limited recently? Is there an alternative to this, or will this do what I need it to do?

To sum up, what would I need to do in order to have multiple USB devices in my client PC that my host PC is doing all the processing and feeding sound with minimal latency?

    Ubiquiti for Home network

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:09 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I've been a lurker for sometime and I am finally getting around to setting up my own home network/mini lab the way I want it. I want to make sure my network is secure as I plan to do some self hosting of a couple different applications, storage and a couple websites. I have done a bit of research and I am looking for expertise on best practices & methodology to deploy the following correctly and securely:

(1.) Dev Server Dual EPYC - still looking for best case with storage capabilities (2.) Pfsense - firewall, open to other options or suggestions (3.) Plex - media share (4.) FreeNAS - storage & redundancy (5.) HomeAssistant - plan to do some home automation (6.) Nginx - plan to self host a couple websites (7.) Security Cameras - recording & storage

So ideally I will be building a server beefy enough to be able to run all the applications in their own docker/vm. I have yet to come to a decision on what software I will be utilizing for virtualization in order to achieve the above. What I want to make sure for the networking aspect is how it's all supposed to be routed correctly. I assume the following is the correct order: Modem -> (Pfsense) -> PiHole -> home network/devices.

Am I missing anything in order to protect the devices from external access?

Also does anyone have recommendations on one virtualization os over another? docker seems to be the popular choice.

Also looking for recommendations for a server chasis that supports hotswapping of 12-24 HDDs/SSDs - was leaning towards a supermicro but open to feedback here as well. Ideally looking for something that supports dual AMD EPYCs.

As far as actual networking equipment specifically with Ubiquiti I wanted to get some feedback to see if anyone has any experience positive, negative or neutral I'm open to all advice. Due to some of my ocd tendencies I would want to match as much of the equipment as possible.

    Networking Equipment I currently Own:

    • 2 x NEW UniFi Access Points (compliments of office closing)

    Equipment I'm currently looking at:

    • UniFi Dream Machine Pro
    • UniFi Switch PRO 48 PoE
    • UniFi Redundant Power System (not really sold on this will probably go tripplite or apc)
    • UniFi security cameras - looking for any feedback here.

Would appreciate any advice on correct and proper network implementation and if I'm missing anything. Always open to any tips, tricks and feedback.

Edit: ok after some clean up it should read a bit cleaner.

trying to make ethernet preferred over WiFi

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:54 PM PDT

short story of why, I need WiFi to connect to a few peripherals that for some reason wont go over the ethernet to the wireless device, but require both to be wireless. I have 1Gbps internet, so ethernet is the best option for internet connection, my WiFi is a simple usb dongle and only 2.0.
so i have change the InterfaceMetric on both, I have my Ethernet set at 5 and i set the WifI all the way up to 80 because i just couldn't get anything to work, and still can't. no mater what I change windows will use the WiFi connection. [Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/5SryCba.jpg)

    Monitor WiFi details

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I have a Netgear R6400 and for for the most part it is great. Stream multiple videos at a time no issue.

The problem I have is that sometimes it can take seconds for a web page to load on my iPhone and I am better of using cell service in my house.

I checked the latency from my iPhone to my router and averaged 15ms(iPhone is on a 5ghz band). I checked to another WiFi device(on 2.4ghz) and got over 60ms average sometime it would spike to 300+

Is there a way to monitor things like collisions, or percent R/T time for a device? I have 18 devices connected with probably 10-12 on the 2.4 band and the rest on the 5ghz band.

On a second note, Do mesh networks handle more devices better(reduce collisions and latency) and/or use different channels for each node? Is there a protocol that assist is in device roaming as opposed to multiple access points using the same ssid and password?

Issue with connecting to certain websites You don't have permission to access ... on this server.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 03:13 PM PDT

Hey. Recently I've discovered that I do not have access to certain websites such as Steam and Lenovo with the following message

    # Access Denied You don't have permission to access "http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/" on this server. Reference #xx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx

altered to the website being tried to access.

Does anyone know a solution to this or do I need to contact my ISP.

When I use a VPN or proxy this issue does not occur

    Network Randomly Losing Packets?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Edit: Screen shot of Arris Modem uncorrectable errors ect https://imgur.com/a/RqqlYjT

MRT images from Jan 22 and 1 from today https://imgur.com/a/5pVe40X

    Prior:

I have posted several times and each in between times certain things work and then stop working. Recently (7 days ago) I replaced my ethernet cable that runs from an Aris modem to a NetGear router. After replacing it the internet speed leveled off at 84 down and 12 up.

The reason I replaced the cable is due to playing online games I was getting extremely high ping but no packet loss (disconnects, ect but no visible packet loss) the last 5 days were great!! Problem solved until Monday night.

Before replacing the cable most of the time the download speed would vary from 20 to 80 and then drop to 3 then go up to 60. It fluctuated a lot. Now it doesn't.

    Problem:

Monday night going into Tuesday morning at 12:30am my games started having anywhere from 1%-92% packet loss. I tried some simple things like a mac address changer (Idk why this has worked before, I'm assuming it causes the PC to have a new IP?), restarting the PC, restarting the router ect...no solution so I gave up for the night.

Today the issue has NOT went away at all. It has been windy all day, but if that is the issue then my ISP just won't fix it.

Other Important notes: For the Arris modem , the light on the Online part will randomly go from solid green to flashing green for a bit, then back to green. Looking up various models it seems that when the light is flashing it is Acquiring a new IP address.

    Other Weird Notes:

Watching sites like YouTube have no issue and never buffer visibly. However if I'm on Twitch a lot of the time the streams will slow down in real time ....then speed up for a second then completely skip 3-5 seconds and return to normal speed. Some times that happens back to back or a few minutes apart, but it makes Twitch unwatchable. (Doesn't matter who, tested on various channels at various qualities and bit rates)

    Monitoring I've Tried:

I tried some software that showed me the HOPS but nothing showed up as an issue there. I downloaded Angry IP Scanner last night and the only noticeable thing was that some times the PS4 would jump to 1200 or 1300 ping. Everything else on the network looked normal. However in the afternoon while having packet loss the PS4 was back to 78 so I don't think there's something extra on the network causing this issue as the devices shown on Angry IP Scanner are normally on and were on when I was playing before with NO packet loss.

Will upgrading my router increase the 5GHz range without the need for mesh or APs?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:13 PM PDT

I currently have an ASUS N66U router and the 5GHz WiFi reaches a room on the opposite side of the house, but it is just barely usable. If I upgrade to a WiFi 6 router such as the ASUS AX55, would it have a better 5GHz range from the better/newer hardware to reach that room?

    Home Network Setup Question

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:56 PM PDT

Looking to improve my home network setup. Have ATT fiber and their gateway and router. 3 story house, router is on main floor in a closet which is an issue but is what it is. Poor wifi upstairs. Home was built in 2017. Ethernet ports in all bedrooms on 3rd floor. Want to expand internet to my backyard pool area.

Don't do anything crazy with the internet.

    1. Switch - https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-routing-switching/products/usw-16-poe
      1. this seems excessive to me, and I am open to alternatives please.
    2. Outdoor AP; choosing between these. Frankly the cheaper one seems adequate. While my backyard is large, I just want to cover the pool area and back deck which is not a huge area and will be well within the limits of both of these.
      1. (UAP-AC-M-PRO-US) - $199; https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-access-points/products/unifi-ac-mesh-pro-ap

Can I plug the coax coming in from the street into my new comcast xb7 (xFi Gateway)?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:51 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Will try to keep this quick.

    • Bought a new condo, comcast cable/internet is my only option and it is not fiber. Coax is coming in from the street into the house
    • The house is wired with coax as well as Cat 5e cable, although only one port is terminated in the house as of now. All cat and coax cables start at a box in the garage. I have a low voltage electrician coming out to terminate the cat cables in the other rooms of the house
    • Current configuration is that coax from street is connected to a Antronix Filter, GLF-1002 MoCA "POE" Filter. From there it is connected to a Commscope SV-8G SV8G 8 Way coaxial RG6 Splitter which connects the coax to the different rooms in the house.
    • I do not care about having cable TV, only internet.

Based on the current configuration and what I want, can I plug the coax from the street directly into the gateway and be ok? Do I need to keep the GLF-1002 attached to reduce noise and plug that into the gateway instead? What is the recommended setup so that I can get the absolute best speeds for these soon to be terminated ethernet ports?

    Thanks!

Advice on router/wifi combo for comcast xfinity

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT

    To all,

My wife and I ate long to upgrade our wifi router from the existing netgear c3000 to something better. We'r routinely gave issues with lag when im on zoom calls and my son is doing school work. I also suspect that 3x comps, 2 phones, and a tablet are too much for this router.

We're looking to get as much performance as possible in the 100-$250 range.

    Any recommendations are helpful.

    Thanks,

Will wired mesh network APs be protected by a wired VPN router?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:00 PM PDT

Would the following network topology allow my WiFi traffic to be VPN-protected?

Cable modem <-> wired VPN router <-> GigE switch <-> mesh WiFi access points (specifically, 3 Google WiFi APs with wired Ethernet connections to the wired VPN router). Idea would be wireless devices connecting via one of the Google WiFi APs would still be sending/receiving data through the APs wired connection to the VPN router and thus still be protected.

I could also possibly get the Google WiFi APs connected directly to the VPN router (not use the switch). My goal is to have the good WiFi coverage for the house the mesh network provides, but still have all inbound and outbound data travelling over a VPN-protected network.

    DECA for PS5 internet

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:39 PM PDT

My PlayStation is across the house from the router, but fairly close to a coax cable. Since DECA adapters are so much cheaper than MOCA, I able to use a DECA adapter to get internet on my PlayStation? I don't have cable TV, just spectrum internet throughout the house, so I'm not worried about cable interference.

    New Home, First Wired Network

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:20 PM PDT

Been searching through here for answers, but have been unsuccessful thus far. I recently bought a new router/AIO (Asus RT-ACRH17) and I'm very happy with it so far, but I'd like to have a go at creating a wired network due to a new house layout. Unfortunately the optimal spot for this router/WAP is not the same as the optimal spot for the rest of the network.

My understanding is that you want a router between your internet modem and your network switch, so I wouldn't want my modem to go to the switch and then one of my switch ports to the modem. Is this correct, or will I need to ditch the AIO (or other suggestions)? If so, what are your recommendations for more budget oriented performance? I just bought a new house after all!

Netgear R6700v3: Suddenly no 5Ghz signal, persistent after factory reset and firmware upgrade

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:51 PM PDT

Hello, I have been running DDWRT on R6700v3 since Jan with no problems. I bought it for a good price on eBay, with the stickers and plastic still attached.

It was working fine, until suddenly today I noticed none of my WIFI devices were connecting. I live in an apt building, so I do not use 2.4ghz because it's oversaturated. Factory resetting the router, I still could not get 5ghz to work, the 2.4ghz channel works fine.

I also tried to flash Netgear firmware back onto the router. It is the same story, except on my S21+ using WifiAnalyzer, I can see that a very weak signal is being broadcast on 5ghz, something like -86dbm. I am sitting 2 feet away from the router, so I can't believe that this signal reading is accurate.

What could have possibly happened that I lost 5ghz transmission, and am showing almost -90dbm 2 ft away? My iPad also cannot see the 5ghz signal. I have tried low channels, 36, and also currently 149, with no change.

ATT Fiber and Nighthawk Mesh 6

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm a noob when I comes to networking but I have ATT fiber at my home. The speeds in the master bedroom upstairs were abysmal so I got the NightHawk mesh system with two satellites. The ATT modem has a built in router. Currently, I have two SSIDs broadcasting: the NightHawk and the ATT one. Is this a problem? Should I set my ATT modem to do IP pass through?

Reach an internal service from the router through WAN interface

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:20 PM PDT

I'm hosting couple services behind my router ( an edgerouter x). I have a domain pointing to my routers (current)public address. Then I have a lot of forwarded ports to different LAN endpoints. I can do lets say 'telnet mydomain.com 443' from any machine and successfully connect. Any machine inside or outside my LAN, except the router itself.

    I can ping:

    root@ERX:/home/myuser# ping mydomain.com PING mydomain.com (8x.x7.2x.2x7) 56(84) bytes of data.

    64 bytes from 8x.x7.2x.2x7.isp.stuff.com (8x.x7.2x.2x7): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.391 ms

    64 bytes from 8x.x7.2x.2x7.isp.stuff.com (8x.x7.2x.2x7): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.242 ms

    but I get Connection refused:

    root@ERX:/home/myuser# telnet mydomain.com 443

telnet: can't connect to remote host (8x.x7.2x.2x7): Connection refused

    or

    root@ERX:/home/myuser# nc -zv mydomain.com 443

    DNS fwd/rev mismatch: mydomain.com != 8x-x7-2x-2x7.isp.stuff.com mydomain.com [8x.x7.2x.2x7] 443 (https) : Connection refused

If Im correct, packets generated by the router itself do not respect the NAT port forwards. But I can be wrong.

Anyi idea how to get around this?

Wifi 6 & Mesh Upgrade: 0% packet loss with eero6 vs 16-30% with Spectrum's Rukus WAP.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:21 AM PDT

So I needed to find a way to minimize packet loss and maximize connection speed to my gaming computer in my ~1050sqft 1-story apartment with ~30', 4 walls, and 2 large appliances in my path. According to my landlord, each apartment should be getting 300/20 speeds hardwired. Running ethernet, which I've always considered necessary for gaming, was not a reasonable option. I have a UBIT AX (wifi 6) PCIe wifi card w/ UBIT dual antenna extension. Here's my experience with my eero6 upgrade today.

First my original setup and wifi stats:

-Spectrum's Microtik Hex Series router with Rukus WAP (wifi 5): 25-70mbps down/4-20mbps up w/ 16-30% packet loss. The packet loss basically made FPS games like CoD unplayable due to lag.

    New setup:

-eero6 basic router with 1 extension point (wifi 6): 200-225m down/20mbps up w/ 0% packet loss and maintaining this while streaming 4k to another device.

I also ordered a TP-Link Tri-Band 7 Stream AX3200 Wi-Fi 6 Router that has yet to arrive which I'd like to test as well. I will be testing the eero6 set up over the next few days to see if it is consistent and works as well for gaming as it appears it will.

    Home network advice

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I currently use Google Wi-fi in my house.

I have just bought a TP link AV2000 Powerline kit to provide data to a black spot in the house which the Google Wi-fi pucks don't reach.

I use network switches to provide Ethernet to TV and Xbox which are located near the main Google router... quick question, which setup is best:

    1. Google Wi-fi router -> Powerline Plug -> Network Switch

    2. Google Wi-fi router -> Network Switch -> Powerline Plug

Or is there no difference in performance etc etc?

Basically. I have the option to go from Google Wi-fi to network switch, which can then handle data feed to TV / Xbox and Powerline adapter to feed the other Powerline adapter..

Or I can go Google Wi-fi to Powerline adapter, and run the network switch off the second Ethernet port on the Powerline adapter to feed the TV and Xbox.
